Do Harvest Hosts accept these toilet setups?
Great video. We have the smaller Trelino in lieu of a cassette toilet and love it. The price is great and the design is SO much better than other composting toilets. And no dragging around those obvious casettes! So easy!
Dollar Tree has this jar of oxygen laundry additive that you can put some in your pee bottle and it greatly reduces the smell of the urine if you're not able to empty it daily
Great idea!
I will give it a try
Thanks for that tip
I lived aboard two boats for a period of 4 years with composting toilets. Worked very well for me
OXY-Clean comes to mind.
Also check out the OGO Nomad, works like the Trelino but only $199
Thanks for breaking that down, if you can build a wooden box you could probably make one for $20. Just pick up a big funnel at autozone and a 5 gallon bucket with a plastic tall kitchen bag in it.
The Trelino is a disrupter and I dunno why others would even consider other composting toilet that require power. Also for rvers or campers it just makes sense to use this because there isnt a chance of it breaking and having your house smelling of poop
Thank you for your video. The best breakdown on this toilet. Even better than their website! They don't even show the jug.
I have had disasters with compostable bags - disintegrating before time to throw away. Ugh! Thank you for doing the research on dumping waste in the garbage. I do wish they had an option of a narrower one. Their size variations are just in height.
Great video! People should use one even in a sticks and bricks. Add up all the gallons of treated DRINKING water flushed down the drain every year. Boggles the mind! Even if people have one in case of emergencies that would be the smart thing to do.
Absolutely concur!! I live in a regular house with a flush toilet, which my housemates use.
I have a Trelino in my guest room for backup use -- as a guest toilet, hurricane toilet, and demo of an eco-friendly stylish toilet. (I myself use a basic Jenkins bucket system for now, but I may treat myself to an additional Trelino for my own use in my garage/studio offgrid glamp-partment as well!)

Definitely a step up from bucket! the sleek, discreet design is good too.
Hi Carolyn, I’ve been using my Trelino Evo-S for the past 6 months, after 6 years with the ole bucket. I absolutely LOVE the Trelino! Great Video!
Thank you for this helpful information, Carolyn. I’m seriously considering installing a composting toilet in my class C. It’s been a real chore to find (and pay for) dump stations when we are boondocking.
We have the Trelino Evo-M in our Sprinter van. Best NSF/ANSI standard 41, “Non-Liquid Saturated Treatment Systems” like, ‘composting’ toilet we’ve tried. We are pleased. Great video, rich content. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Carolyn that is a great product. I am thinking of doing a little traveling in my truck and this would be prefect.
Wow! This is great! Thanks for sharing. It hits all the points of what I wanted in a composting toilet for our rv at a price point that is much more affordable. ❤️
I'm axiously awaiting the arrival of my Trelino Evo M. I'm glad you tested this out for me!
A woman who travels in a van through Scotland (Aisling something or other) posted a review of this toilet (she also really likes it). One thing she does which I think is a nice idea is that she has an additional reusable shopping bag that she puts the pee container in when she takes it somewhere to dump it so that it is even more discrete. Her bag is also more than large enough to fit a couple of solid bags as well so she can toss them in a trashcan on the way to the public bathroom to dump her liquids. She also purchased an additional liquid container as an emergency backup just in case. This is also probably a pretty good idea.
Just in time Carolyn! I have been eyeing this toilet for the past few weeks. I am no longer in my class C full time so I am trip camping in my suv. I plan to take out the seat behind the drivers seat to make room for this or for the slightly smaller $300 model. I also did a lot of research and this looks to be the smartest design of them all. Cheers!
I used a composting toilet for a couple years, and it was great. Never smelled bad, and was easy to clean.
Hey Carolyn & Sadie!
My pup & I are brand new to van life and we are loving it! I have the small Trelino toilet - it’s GREAT!
I use pine shavings that are available at farm stores and pet supply. & yes, it does double duty as a very convenient seat in my tiny van.
My thanks to you for all your wonderful videos - you’ve helped my learning curve go so smoothly! Hope to cross paths with you someday down the road. Safe travels!
We use a porta potty. $150 and we use baking soda for for smells. We put the toilet paper in a basket and we can dump pretty much anywhere.
Thanks for sharing. God bless you!
Great review. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Carolyn!
I just looked up the price on these units. Over $500?!
Seems like the principle is pretty simple and you could piece something together for a lot less. Nice features for the liquid waste container, which Trelino sells separately for pretty cheap.
We just ordered our Trelino Origin L. Looking forward to utilizing it.
This is just what I need! I didn't realize there were these portable separator-type toilets out there. Yay!
Yeah that seems like the best option especially the water savings and no smell, and if you are in the back country and bury it without plastic it would probably decompose faster with the organic matter added and there are choices of organic matter some would probably be better than others burying it in the wild. I Bury my stool away from campsites or water where it's left alone to do it's shit
Thank you so much for sharing this. We are working on our mini bus this will help a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice job on the video it was very helpful. Thank you.
Nice to see you review this set up as I've just seen it on another channel. Seems both of you like it so it's saved on my list of 'future purchases'. One thing that the other channel found a problem was the compostable bags from Trelino 'composting' a little too fast!
Very helpful info!
I have a Trelino for my motorhomes. It's so much better than the others. Comfort, easy, nice appearance. All good I'd buy another one in a snap. I've used coconut coir but prefer the wood pellets I buy at Tractor Supply.
thank you for sharing
I'm considering, one of These, for my new Jeep Wrangler travels....
I've tried to use a funnel and jug inside a bucket, but sometimes the funnel moves or misses the jug and it's a big mess. This looks much better at separation. Thanks for the info.
Great info, thanks!
thanks so much!
I love composting toilets! The best, in my opinion! ❤
That is a crazy price for plastic🥴 WOW
Thanks...👍👍
That’s great!
I made my own separating toilet (5 gal bucket w/ toilet seat topper) but the compostable bags would be a nice addition!
Wow, I always trust your product reviews, and this toilet seems like a winner. As always, thanks Carolyn!
Thank you for this detailed review. I’m comparing chemical ports potty’s and the Trelino. Does the urine reservoir require any chemical to control smell and if the urine has to be disposed of in a conventional toilet/dump station, how is the Trelino better? Thanks again
I've had a nature's head for 4 yrs. Don't miss messing with black tank.
Thank you this was so helpful! I'm super new to considering RV life, does anyone know the appropriate way to dispose the urine? Like if you're in an urban environment
Great toilet. Thank you
Nice review 😊
Great information! Thank you for sharing. Wish I'd known about this toilet before we paid $$ for one that churns. I'm glad we switched to a composting toilet last year, but I've learned simple is better when it comes to living full time in the RV. I also learned that not all compostable bags are equal. I am going to order some of the super thickened compostable bags in your link. 😉
One concern my husband has for our overland vehicle (which does NOT have a holding tank for sewage) is where do we store that large 5 gallon bucket of organic material (hydrated coconut coir)? It would take up a lot of room. Also, since you are not really "composting" your solids, could you use something like kitty litter? It's easy to find and desiccates solid waste. Thanks for video on the Terlino. We currently have a flushable / chemical porta-potty in our overland vehicle and it's pretty good, but it's heavy and clean out is not fun. Looking for alternatives, so thank you for video, I'm considering this toilet!
My question is if you are Boondocking what do you do with the bags until you can throw them in a dumpster? That’s what I am trying to figure out before buying one.
Also check out the OGO Nomad, same type but only $199
Looks like an acceptable alternative to the higher priced composting toilets. Thank you for sharing.
Instead of coconut coir (I started with that), I use ashes (cooled) and sand/dirt, sometimes my composting worms. Once you seal the bag, no more composting because no more oxygen. I bungee a screen over the commode and set it in discreet space. Also a female urinal that goes into recycled laundry bottle. Basically you want solution that separates.
lol a stool for your stool… great information
I've used cedar shavings fantastic smell whole place
This is brilliant. I've been looking to buy a teardrop tailer but how do I use the bathroom? The Trelino looks like the sh*t !!! Thank you !!!
Have you had trouble with splash back when peeing into this type of toilet?
Awesome
Hi Carolyn and Sadie!! Cheers!
Very cool looks llike much more economical option than Natures Head and Ego toilets and a lot less hassle. I'm sold.
That’s a nice simple setup.
I have had a composting system for years.
I think they only recommend earthen compost on flower beds. Not food gardens. (Just in case,😆)Enjoy the setup. Agree with you about stealth of blue urine jug👍
yes! you can use it for food gardens. I learned that in my research
@@CarolynsRVLife I'm glad you researched this. In Maine, "forever chemicals" in manure spread on fields in some areas of the state has ruined the soil and wells of nearby neighbors. I think my poop might be safer....just saying LOL.
you never want to use a meat eaters poop for fertilizer that goes for all animals humans included@@CarolynsRVLife especially since the beef people eat has so much non food in it : ( an toxins, bacteria, injected hormones and meds yeah no lol You are more than 7 years a vegetarian maybe ok but still I would not .
7:00 This is great and I think this might be the p erfectsolution for my offgrid cabin but I don't understand why or how there wouldn't be any smell. It's poop in a bucket and there's no science within the chemical makeup of a bucket. So can you explain to me why there's no smell?
I used coco coir for my tortoise enclosure and didn’t have much smell. And he pooped a lot lol
And his pee smelled awful outside the enclosure. Not sure about the pee bucket here
I like composting toilets just for the water savings if nothing else and I think more and more innovation is coming with them. One thing I recently saw was on a new Airstream where the liquids still go into the black tank and the solids are in the composting bucket so you don’t have to fill the black tank with water and chemicals, and you don’t have to empty the small liquid bottle every day or two.
That liquid container looks larger than many others and I would probably buy a spare for just in case you fill it in the middle of the night. I had seen another brand with a display light when the liquids were getting full. I don’t remember if it ran by its own battery, or it was connected to the RV battery, but it would be nice to know how full it is without disassembling the toilet.
I love airstream's idea. I was thinking about getting a travel trailer but i would not want to do the black tank the usual way😅
Very informative. Thanks for sharing!
If I am parked on land I own can I bury the bags?
I had an expensive Nature's Head toilet for 10 years and although it worked great , it was large and cumbersome to deal with when emptying the poop. I love the Trelino because it's light and small. And like you said, so much cheaper.
Yeah, I've talked to friends who have the cartridge ones and are now jealous of the Trelino. Very easy and does the same thing! Glad you like yours. Thanks Joni.
I have an RV first thing I did was put in a composting toilet. Best. Thing. Ever.
I got the Ogo. Spendy but worth it.
Thank you for sharing. I’m getting the Ogo as well. I decided I’m definitely worth the investment. The small venting fan(necessary from my point of view) and motor don’t take a rocket scientist to fix or replace if they do happen to go out at some point. Either way, some kind of composting toilet beats a black tank any day!
Perfect
My thing is it's easy to use a trash bag for solids cause you can throw it into a trash big without bringing attention to you, but the liquid would be very obvious in emptying it. I rather having a composting toilet, for everything instead of a urine diverter into a trash bag, you can just drop it off info a trash bins, and leave before anyone notices you dropped everything into a trashbin
I bought the white Trelino (same size) back around January for my new RV life and I LOVE IT!!! I did a ton of research on composting toilets and what was the easiest to use and clean and Trelino beats the competition by leaps and bounds at about half the price (or more) than the others. To anyone reading comments and wondering, THIS IS THE BEST COMPOSTING TOILET ON THE MARKET!!! So glad to see someone else has found them and now promoting them.
PS: I use either pine or cedar shavings that you can get at Walmart in the pet section for $10. Huge bag that will last for months.
Also wondering if anyone knows how Trelino compares to Boxio, was considering getting their starter kit
Check out the OGO Nomad too
We just ordered the Boxio kit!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I hate black tanks and emptying them. I dislike my rv toilet!! This is going to be wonderful!!
You're so welcome! I agree, black tanks suck. I'm pretty sick of mine :-p
Thanks for the info. I am currently building a van and have decided I am going with a Laveo Dry Flush toilet. It will have an extra cost for the bags that go in it, but from my research it doesn’t smell, I never have to see any waste at all and it’s electric. Not too expensive but not dirt cheap. Once I start using it, I will let you know!
Thank you this is why I love watching you
Thank you ! Love it !
Lovely video thanks for sharing 😊
What about urine smell? Sorry if you mentioned this. I didn’t read all the comments.
Thank you for the review n the lesson
Glad it was helpful!
Put small chunks of lump charcoal in the urine container to neutralize odors.
I’ve been using a C-Head compost toilet for three years now. It’s different and takes some getting used to…but NOT having to dump!! Yes!!
I have a composting toilet , i bought as a kit. Uses a five gallon bucket. Has the diverter for the pee bottle.
I bought cedar to build a box seat around the bucket with a top that folds down over the seat and put a cushion on top with velcro.
I love it. Sure beats having to go pay to dump the tank at our local camlground
mine is very similar works great
I would've loved to have had one of these a few years back when we had back to back hurricanes and were without electricity for 2 weeks. I used a luggable loo instead. I've always been curious how people who were living in their car for a year or two could manage that. It's next to impossible to use it in a space that small, so they'd have to take it out into the parking lot, or wherever they're staying, and sit on it outdoors to use. Nice.
Some people use the pop up shower stalls as toilet rooms too. So if you are camping in a car or tent, that’s a solution.
Great info, C! Thanks! Hey, did you intend to look quite like the sculpture "The Thinker"? 😂❤
I’ve been thinking about the Trelino for my conversion. Thanks for reviewing it. Also looking at Boxio.
Also look at the OGO Nomad
I don’t understand the hype about the Trelino
toilet. I just got one, put it in my van and used it and within one day the van smells. with my chemical toilet it smells after like three days but it’s a chemical smell. With this toilet. I put peat Moss down and after use I put more peat Moss down and the whole van smells now. so I don’t get the hype. It smells far worse than my chemical toilet, which only smells like chemicals and only when I lift the lid, and only after 3 days or so. I was really hoping this toilet would work. Not only does it not work but it is made of very thin plastic and costs 400$ for the smaller one. I’m thinking you also have to use coffee grinds or I just return this toilet . I was expecting it to be at least the grade of plastic that is in the 5 gallon water jugs. It is not. It is very very thin.
That’s great information thank you
Thank you, very informative, your so real, Love it
You are so welcome
Thanks for sharing! We have another brand that could enhance your RV journey. Take a look!
Very good video Carolyn!!! 👍👍😉😃
I like this. I can tell you really know your sh-t.
HI Carolyn Amazing video have a wonderful day
I was thinking about taking my toilet out of my rv and replace it with a composting toilet, did you do that or are you hauling the toilet in your bathroom or storage area. And ya when I was looking into it, very expensive. I'm going to look into it. Give us the link please
Thank you Richard .
Also in the video description. :-)
So what about when you're not near a restroom to empty the urine? Do you empty it on the ground or what. Seems like very hands on method of waste disposal. Does it add to the time between disposal... like where do you keep these bags and filled urine containers (I find I "pee" about a half gallon a day. How much does the liquid container hold?) until you go back to town?
you can get an extra container .i
I like what I see. Can’t decide between the plastic lidded model or the unit with the wood lid. Any thoughts anyone?
Check out the OGO Nomad too
That's fantastic!
❤ good review 😊
Great job
and diapers DONT decompose....ugh
Well okay, I see you have the same brand of toilet we got 6 months ago. We love ours. I consider it a great investment. Hope you have a similar experience. 👍🏾💯 If we ever cross paths down the road I'll share some alternatives to the bricks. Much smaller and or best a probable smell remediation.
Maybe you would be willing to share your information with all of us who are considering this alternative. 😊
One more question, are you planning on removing your RV toilet? I would like to put this where my existing toilet is if that's possible. Space is a premium for me (24' C). 😂
