Seriously the eye thing actually exemplifies his disconnection from his actions.... wish we could see what you thought was off, but his gaze not aligning potentially may just work.... but a glance her way may have worked best... alas, nice fix, if there needed to me one 😊
Great job buddy!

I'll never understand why film guys buy these expensive cameras just to dirty and kill the image with a ton of grain
Haha I’m sure you love the blur and barrel distortion I added as well then. Thanks for watching!
It adds to this story, being a time piece and the grittyness of the story (although I didn't make the creative decisions nor the script so I'm not sure if that was intentional or just because they liked the look). Most of the time color is an intentional piece, ie: a modern fashion commercial that focuses on business clothing would be shot on zeiss and have a super clean high key look compared to shooting a fashion commercial for vintage clothing where you may want to use a canon 8-64 t2.9 16mm and give it 16mm grain& halation so it feels more like that time. and the 6k ain't expensive lol
great work. would love to see the grading process! :)
You got it ! Thanks for watching

Which lenses did you use ?

Thanks 🙏🏾
Looks good did you intentionally cross the line with the first action shot? I initially thought the clerk stuck him.
When he threw the can? if that's the shot you are talking about yes. Since the boy character is feeling anxious and overwhelmed I wanted the viewer to feel a bit jarred as well. lol maybe it was a bad choice. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch it!
Great colours, love the twist, very Danny Gevirtz-esque! Was it intentional to break the 180 rule for the shots going back and forth from the cashier to the boy?
Haha thanks man. Danny taught me how to be a dp so def a bit of his style has crept into my work. The 180 degree break was not at all intentional lol. It was just a dumb mistake. I explain it more in the BTS vid but yeah, just was so distracted trying to direct and dp at the same time I missed correcting the eye line. Damn near had a heart attack when I realized in the edit, lol one of those mistakes you make and you'll never make again. Thanks for watching !
@@carstenschlag keep at it man! You have a great eye👀👀👀

Inspiring work! Everyone's saying it in the comments but the color grading is really really good
Thanks man! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch
incredible
Thanks man! Appreciate you !
I love the composition, rhythm, and colors, but there’s a lot of noise in the image, isn’t there? Is this an intentional style, or is it because the Black Magic camera handles low-light situations poorly
Thank you man ! It was intentional, it’s film grain. My experience with black magic and lowlight has actually always been quite good! As long as you are exposing properly and having enough contrast points, it looks great in low light in my opinion. Appreciate you watching!
My anxiety went through the roof watching this 😅😅😅
Haha Im glad, that's what I was going for. Thanks for watching!
Oh, man! This is absolutely great!!!!! Love the color grading!
Thank you so much man! Appreciate it !
What's the name of the country song played with the credits?
Burnin’ down by Ken Lowery. Thanks for watching man!

Great job, production, color grading, acting! I feel when the kid throws the can, it wasn't exactly clear what happened. Too quick. In your BTS, you showed the kid throwing against a plastic panel which would have been a great POV shot there. Cons: hard to relate to the kid even though we've been there. Didn't feel like the cashier was "messing with him" as much as doing her job out of robotic habit. Maybe if she sneered or rolled her eyes when the mom left, viewers would empathize with the kid more. As it is, it looks like an intro to a serial killer film. Either way, looks great.
Hey Scott! I really genuinely appreciate the honest review. I can totally see why you think the kid throwing the can shot was too quick. I wanted it to feel confusing, because the kid in that moment was so overwhelmed and kinda was disoriented I wanted the audience to feel a bit like that as well. Then once you see him bashing her head in, it’s supposed to click what just happened. The same time he kind of realizes what he has done. I also totally understand your comment about the cashier. The reason I didn’t have her sneer or play it up more that she is messing with him, was because in reality she is not. it’s all in the kids head. His anxiety makes him feel like people are always out to get him or something is always going wrong. So in reality she’s just doing her job but in his mind that’s not the case. Maybe i didn’t do a good enough job getting that across, so i really do appreciate your critique! I’ll take it all into account going into my next film. Thank you so much for watching, I appreciate you!
@@carstenschlagit was pretty clear to me that kid was anxious but i thought it was leading to that ending to be in the kids head too
Great work, the Cinema 6k is a tad too sharp but you still did a great job.
Thanks man!

Interesting first try Carsten, you have talent and should keep doing this. And your casting was very good, specially the cashier woman, she was so real.
In terms of how I see it, I think you should try to work more on the editing of face gazes and how they interact. In my opinion, some of the main frames of the kid were just too tight for an adequate appreciation of his interaction with the cashier and some of the other characters. And some scenes were just too short, not allowing viewers to stay more with the mind of the person portrayed.
This is a science and an art that is not easy to master so the more you practice and the more you try different things, the better. And, many times, you don’t need to rely on something out of the ordinary to have a good film or a good ending; your film could have just show the point of view and stress of being that boy without the need for a violent ending. In my opinion, in America, filmmakers have naturalized violence because they watch just too much if it and they have naturalized it, but that is an scape from real life. Real life is violent but not violent like in movies, so those movies don't speak to us, they only entertain us, and that's ok but I would call it art. As some writer that I forgot said once, "the truly extraordinary in life is the four-leg cat, not the five one."
A good suggestion to become a better filmmaker is always keep watching good movies (not necessarily north American ones, they rely too much on the spectacular in my opinion) and try to discover how they do them, why do they work so well sometimes. A recent film that I recommend and that you could find somehow in tune with your first person subjective style is ‘Shiva Baby’ (USA, 2020) by young American director Emma Seligman. She understands how to render the subjective point of view with camera framing and editing and the choreography of dialogue and interaction, with mastery, in my opinion.

Hey there! First off, thank you so much for not only taking the time to watch but also taking the time to give constructive feedback. I greatly appreciate it! The violence was definitely a crutch to make it more interesting to the average viewer and just felt easier for my first time directing. In the future I plan on trying to tell more stories about the mundane and just try to inject a little magic. I’ll definitely check out that film. I appreciate the recommendation. Thank you again, i really appreciate you!
Yo that’s my friend Thomas!!! Why did you kill her?
What was the actual point?
The kid got stressed and over reacted in response, killing the cashier.
Bro its a good filmed video but cmon, use the 180 degree rule
Haha yeah trust me, I was just as mad at myself. Wasn’t done purposefully. Appreciate you watching though regardless!!
@@carstenschlagrules are meant to be broken
I know the kid
Nice, he was a great actor!
@@carstenschlag he is
cool shots but screenplay is very stupid and bad
Appreciate your honesty. Would be interested to hear what specifically made it very stupid and bad to you?
The kid is a great actor, but the plot is awful. "Autistic kid snaps and kills a cashier." Great job, you heard "horror is a conservative genre" and didn't think twice. I've watched this three times now and I can't see how the cashier has "decided to mess with" the kid. Because she swipes the items quickly? I could maybe believe that if the other sounds of the checkout aisle weren't shown to be just as impactful.
Haha it was my first time writing something, apologies if it wasn’t up to your standards. I appreciate the honesty tho ❤️
If it helps, literally everything else was either “good” or “great.” I just mentioned the kid in particular because child actors are usually pretty bad, so he was downright exceptional.
If this was your first time writing something, well, everybody writes horribly in the beginning. That doesn’t make the writing in this film better, but it does make me interested in what you’ll create in the future.
🔥🔥🔥
