ReTopping a Guitar Body with Fabric - My Custom Process
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 дек 2019
- I have a custom process I do for retopping a guitar body with Fabric. This is a lot different than a lot of other folks. I actually add a whole new layer of wood on this guitar body.
Enjoyed watching your process. I am going to have to dig out my routing table so I can start doing some binding.
Happy mistake, that teal looks better than the original blue.
With an overwhelming amount of patterns, prints & colors to pick from in the textile trades, the theme and pattern possibilities are truly endless. I'm curious to give this a go some day down the road.
cool let me know how it goes.

Me and my grandpa did this on my homemade electric guitar that we built completely from scratch it also has my name on the fretboard we dyed the leather flower fabric grey it covers the whole body front back and sides my guitar is shaped like a banjo cause I like Earl Scruggs and he's one of my inspirations my guitar has only 1 pickup and two vintage volume and tone knobs and an output jack from a 1950s Esquire and for the strings I use My own set of custom 8 gauge flatwounds with a 18 wound third that I customize myself my playing style is pretty much like Luther Perkins he's my main guitar inspiration
that looks REALLY good
I’ll toss my grandma’s old tablecloth in the mail for you.
That could work. Does it have crayon drawing of spaceships and puppies.
It’s got what might be a crayon drawing of a Vegas casino carpet...

Well, it’s a table cloth. I’ve never seen a table cloth with a finish on it. Have you?

Very good job!!! Happy christmas!!! Greetings!
thanks! merry chirstmas!
Another Cristmas gift, thanks, that piece looks amazing...
haha. Thanks!
That’s an awesome technique.
Thanks for share you skill bro
Greetings from Wasaga Beach in Ontario. I thing I'm going to try your system on my next build. Great job, thanks D
sup ken!
Nice work, beautiful guitar body!
Can't hear a word you say from 8:30 because of the noise of the power tools and extractor.
He talks about using Les Paul templates for the toggle switch cavity and cover plate recess. Also mentions he has two of those sanders. Keeps a belt on one and a narrow drum on the other.
That's going to be a real beauty.
Teal is a cool color, not a fan of paisley, but it looks great! Awesome finish! Looks sharp!
Great job Derek & looks great !!
That would've looked insane on a "comfort cutaway" body!!
Really cool. I just found your channel. Very informative. Thanks for the content.
Great job, luv it, the only way I'd own a tele.
hahah.
Looks GR8 Derek!!! Have a Merry Christmas!!!
Wow! Beautiful👏
Really nice job, you have cool tools to do it right. I did two fabric tops with many coats of top coat and a hand file, not the best way.
the pin router is the greatest guitar tool.
So cool, i need one.
I'm playing around with an old affinity strat filled in everything and making a hybrid tele.. I'm going to try. Overnight it with a tea stained paper bag to first cover wood differences and also to give it a burned and map like appearance.
Looks awesome bro!! Gonna be really cool with more black accents, At the end you said he was going to use black control covers... That would really make that blue (teal) pop if he used all black hardware, with the black binding... Awesome. Merry Christmas D and thanks for sharing your process! ...Mike (Whitey).
Came out awesome
thanks!
I like the turquoise color. Your technique is great. always wondered what the best way to do that was. I think a natural binding would also been a good choice.
I thought about leaving it natural. but its sharp!
@@bigdguitars it definitely is.
Nice job Dreck looks great,Cheers
thanks!
Υour arms are gigantic man. Nice.
haha. thanks!
Derek, that looks great! I like the teal-y color. Ever since you did your first fabric I've been looking for that type fabric in Purple. I'd like to give it a try, eventually. I love the satin finish too, nice job!
Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family my man! Great vid and thanks, Pam 😜🎉
I have a purple fabric. It’s awesome.
Very cool! Where did you get it?
@@pamcarr4003 The real questions are never answered...
Must have a slight yellow hue in what looked like Pro Marine Resin; good to know.
Where did you find that pin router? I'd love to have one but most I've seen are huge, industrial size machines that are more than a few thousand dollars
How much for a particleboard telecaster with a melamine top?
I absolutely love this. I am so tempted to give you my cheap Epi LP and you have do this :) Maybe if I ever decide to upgrade components on it since it is the guitar I started learning on & I don't want to get rid of it..
I have a 53 gold top coming!
Carved top...
That is just a Fabulous Guitar Body!!! Everything Coming from Basement Has Been Top Notch... Freaking Amazing Piece of Guitar Art... D,,, Can you post a video of BigD Boopers or F'up's just to let us know you're Human? Lol
this weekend. I will be posting the PRS nightmare.
Turned out great! I need to try a paisley topped Strat or Tele. I have a cheap basswood Strat body that may be the perfect candidate.
I wonder if I could do a strat like this. maybe?
@@bigdguitars it'd be tough doing a resin pour considering all the bevels. Maybe gluing the fabric on and using a poly clear coat?
Go for an aerodyne vibe with a custom body.
No floyd Rose??? 🤣🤣🤣
Feliz Navidad mi amigo!!!!
Hey man thanks for the video. Can you do a paisely black and yellow retopping?
Would have been great to see the body more in detail after the whole process. Kinda dissatisfying without that part. ...But I assume it turned out nice.
Did you eventually find a way to stop the color from changing??
liked the vid, interesting idea using resin on the top instead of many many coats of a usual type of finish. I don't understand the logic of gluing the extra piece on top of an already routed body then routing everything again, I know you already had the body, but why not just use a blank body of your choice then sell the other to someone who wanted that configuration? Seems like an awful lot of extra work for no real reason. Wish I had your shop bud.
Hi all! I just tried this with both epoxi and polyester on a purple and gold fabriq in this style and it turns red. I even tried to pour just nitro cellulose on it and it still turns red . Why do you guys think it does that?
how much for a fix topp on a fender standard body? to Norway in Red
Do i have to scrape the paint off of my guitar body or just sand it to have a rough surface if im going to do this?
I wish I knew how to play the guitar... I would send you my DCU "desert camouflage uniform" from Iraq to turn into an instrument. Then maybe the kids wont sell it all in the garage sale after I'm dead. lol
Thats a pretty cool design. Have you ever attempted to make a tree of life inlay?
I haven't done one in a long time. I have a few templates to do all of this.
I'd love to see you do that Derek! It would look fantastic! Pam
Color came out really nice! I think binding looks pretty classy with a fabric top. Is it easier than feathering the sides?
How did this process not make the neck pocket too deep?
did you get any orange peel with the 2k clear? how does it sand ? what's the dry time before buffing? thanks
Would solarez work instead of 2k for a finish?
beware of the massive volume increase at 8:28 (I'm guessing editing mistake ?)
yep! I am tempted to reupload. but if you made it this far into it thanks!
..... yellow titebond and blue material = Teal Green?
Cool result man, thanks for explaining it. Can I ask though, is that epoxy resin or glue?
its a thin layer of epoxy.
Has anyone asked you to make a set neck tele?
How much weight does this technique add to the guitar?
good job, is there a "binding glue" or was that just some C A Glue?
It turns teal because the epoxy has yellow in it.
Totally not the point of the video, but I really appreciate your shop. I aspire to have this ultra clean shop, but mine looks like yours.
I cleaned hardcore. I will post a vid of that shortly.
Why a 2 week wait time?
I need a lighter tele body... have any experience with those sycamore bodies off ebay?
I haven't seen them. sycamore isn't that light. swamp ash or basswood.
I think I know who that fabric turned greenish; the fabric (I think polyester?) reacts with the wood glue. I accidently spilled wood glue on some fabric, after a while it discolored.
Perhaps glueing it on with another type of glue will make a difference? Just my thoughts, just guessing.
The video is great but i can't figure out what you're saying from 8:29 to 9:57.
yea I don' t know how I missed that!!!!
You know what's weird? The fabric is blue, in the thumbnail the top looks blue. But, the actual guitar in the video looks greenish.
***VIRAL ALERT***
Taste is subjective, not a fan of fabric topped guitars.
Looks professional though.
It's really the paisly fabric that I can't stand. A fabric top could be nice looking if the fabric was more appealing.
I love paisley!!!
Halfway through, the voiceover is horrible. Hear the loud tools, not the commentary
