      Future generations will laugh at us for our folly. We know how to generate electricity efficiently. We can see what is coming over the hill. Using solar panels to keep things cooler through shading is a perfect fit, so long as you have room for them. Since they require so little maintenance and last forever, once installed they almost can be forgotten. Even without battery these panels can directly power some fans to cool down further your RV, carport, your shed, your pergola or your whole house, extending the life or your shingles. But if you can fit that many, you can actually drive a large mini-split air conditioner using a battery less hybrid inverter. Solar panels are robust assets and often keep delivering electrical power even though they've been shattered as long as there is circuit continuity within. Together with LFP batteries they are the future of off grid autonomy, tremendous savings and respect for your environment over time, of course.

    • @GruffSillyGoat
      @GruffSillyGoat Месяц назад +1

      Covering the battery packs with PV panels ends up using more energy to keep the battery pack underneath cooler. Solar panels are black so they absorb light radiation, however, they only absord certain frequencies and the rest is radiated away in all directions. The area under a solar panel heats up a lot, which is why some of the more expensive high efficiency panels have active cooling (cooler panels are more efficient). The heat build up means the battery pack underneath has to work harder to exhaust its internal heat into the hotter air around it. The heat also stagnates under the cover the panels and cannot raise away as effectively via convection.
      To overcome this the battery pack would need uprated fan capacity to exhaust the heat, using more energy. There would probably be no energy gain from the panels above the battery as their energy would be consumed by the increased cooling requirements. One could install tall mounting frames with sparsers tilted panels to let the battery heat disapate but the energy gain vs the cost is not significant; also this introduces maintenance concerns when working above active battery packs.
      This is why battery packs are painted white, to radiate heat away, and have fan outlets on top vent to the open space above them so the hot air can be carried away by convection.

    • @francoisguyot9770
      @francoisguyot9770 Месяц назад +1

      @@GruffSillyGoat I have ceiling fans to cool my solar panel if needed. One fan easily displace and prevent the heat build up over 9 panels without drawing much energy all. It should help prolonging the panel efficiency. But they can tolerate the heat without fan as is common with public school parking lots solar installations in my city.

      @mddell24 - being from a cool/cloudy/wet country (UK) comes with certain benefits, that is higher wind generating capacity (80TWh). Currently over 50% of the UK's energy is derived from renewables, a percentage that is which is increasing rapidly - coal is now insignificant and will be gone completely next year and LNG usage is dropping year on year. Last year the UK exported energy (10TWh) to Europe, as there was a surplus of capacity even with fossil fuels generating their lowest output for decades. The UKs storage battery capacity reached 3.7GW last year with a further 8GWh coming online in the next year, and plans to grow this by another 44GW capacity by 2028. The UK domestic need only requires 20 to 35GW, the UK plans to be a net exporter of renewable energy by 2030. The scale of economics for battery energy systems means it is now cheaper to install and run renewable generation with battery storage than a gas turbine plant. The target operating price for battery storage by 2028 is £22/kW/yr for a fifteen year period (which is relatively cheap in the energy world).

They will need to replace early installed packs that are losing power over time as they keep expanding out. The grid needs a complete rehaul of wiring, transformers and other power grid products to be able to handle increased power demand. Battery storage doesn't help that part of the systems.

    • @philtimmons722

      That is all ongoing and part of planned operations. Here is the thing -- it is called Service Life. Everything on the Grid has a Service Life. Typically between 25 and 50 years. Concrete -- such as in Hydro / Dams lasts longer, but not much else does. So with a Service Life of 25 to 50 years for the rest -- that means about 2 to 4% of the overall Grid needs to be removed and replaced every year. Add some growth to that, of maybe 1 to 2%, and that is what we do. When we put in the new, it is the best available and newest technology -- at that time. But in 25 to 50 years, all of that will be outdated and replaced again. In the case of local fire, tornado, or hurricane damage, things sometimes accelerate with the repairs. It is happening all around US all the time. Chances are most of the time you do not even notice. You will probably have to get up at 6 am on a Sunday to catch us crossing a major highway with new lines. Any area that fails to stay current on Service Life risks major failures -- like PG&E did in California (ran steel brackets to 80 years) with live High Voltage lines falling and setting major forest fires. Killed people and cost Billions. Not a good look and really dumb business.

      Since Wind, Solar and Hydro have no associated fuel costs, the business costs will reduce to amortized capex, repairs and renewals and administrative overheads. This will result in cheaper energy costs for electricity while companies supplying that electricity will of course still make sufficient profit. Also since solar can be deployed domestically, power production companies will be in direct competition with home produced power. This will also keep costs lower as previously power companies have had virtual monopolies over a vital resource.

      This is my simple minded take - renewables plus battery storage has a long way to go to fill demand - so it’s not going to go to zero for a long time yet - way beyond a decade.
      This big battery project constitutes 1/5000 of US daily energy usage. (And will make Tesla 1.4B in profit)
      So you can imagine how much money can be made in this battery and renewable sector across the next decade at least.
      If you’re investing in any related company - chances are you have no more than a 3,5 year outlook - so demand will no where near exhaust by that time- so prices will not drop to zero by then (that’s my estimate anyway)
      Does that line up with what Seba is saying?

Compare this tiny amount of power - by batteries which have to be charged by something; to the US Total existing grid of 4.2 Trillion killowatts - its totally nothing. That is if there is no transition to move away from fossil fuel use to an expanded grid; then it would be 15.3 Giga watts of 18 Trillion killowatts. How can less than 1/1000th of the grid be transformative; especially when even this tiny amount has to be charged by something, it may well be fossil fuel plants doing the charging.

      in south Australia the grid is going to reach 100% renewables supported and stabilised by Tesla megapack. In Western Australia we are already at 40% - we’ve got rid of 1 of two coals stations and our expensive peaker plants.
      So far the south Australian barter has saved the state 333 million dollars and totally eradicated blackouts which used to be a problem there - also helps led by Tesla energy bidding system.
      So that would decrease electricity bills for customers.

    Day before yesterday I was in LA talking to a guy with an ID4 with a home charger. A couple times a week he has to make side trips and will run the battery down to 20% and needs a public charger. It's a nightmare. Yes, they are all over but they're all full with a line of cars waiting, and roughly 25% of them are off line AND, the DC fast chargers that put out 350 KWH barely put out 50. Why? The local grid can't support that. That's not the EV's fault, That's the fault of the charging companies and the grid. Why do you never talk about that? Right now public charging is a joke.
    Commercial property owners may be willing to install "some" chargers but they don't want to convert 100 parking spaces to public chargers that cost a fortune and don't help the businesses that parking is serving. Then there's the electrical grid in that area. It's a big mall. That mall was built with wiring suitable for a shopping mall not for charging 100 EV's or whatever. How much and how long to rewire a 3 million square foot mall and who"s paying for it? And the chargers?
    Then there's a thing called private property rights. The State says install these chargers, the owner says no, it can be tied up in court for years. That's why Ford and GM did what they did. They're switching back to ICE pickups for maybe 3 years to give time for the EV charging infrastructure to catch up. Does China have that problem? No, it's a dictatorship, if the CCP wants that space for a 100 unit charging park, no problem. You're out buddy. No lawsuits, you're simply out. Look at the millions of displaced people to build the Three Gorges Dam. They had no rights yet you keep talking about how great and efficient China manufacturing is. Dictatorships are always more efficient than free countries. When you say those things you may as well be saying Communism is a better system than a democracy. I was gonna say the same thing. Where I live the total amount of megapacks Tesla sold last year would power our grid for just over an hour. Lets just stop messing around and start building nuclear power plants. These people are coming up with the least efficient way to produce power. You build a bunch of nuclear reactors and they are basically running 24/7 for decades at a time. Then after like 40 years you shut them down for like a year to refurbish the reactor and then fire it back up and run it for another 40 years. Once a reactor is paid off (15 or so years) its extremely cheap to run. Also the most expensive part is all the ground work and building the structures so when you do a refurbishment its not that expensive. You arent replacing any of that. You also drive down costs by building lots of reactors in one location. Bruce Power in Ontario has 8 reactors in 1 location. That provides 6.5 GW of power. They are talking about adding another 4.8 GW to the same location.. The whole site is 2200 acres. There are farms surrounding the whole area.

      Get real - we plan to use Gas Peaker Turbines as the last resort backup for the Renewable Grid in Australia. The backup order is as follows in Australia - Hydro, Pumped Hydro, Grid Batteries then Gas Turbines. Batteries have a far more sophisticated role in electricity grids than simply backing up.
      PS The Grid is designed by engineers not politicians so that it will deliver reliably and cost effectively.
      PPS Read the AEMO ISP 2024 Roadmap and then you won't panic about batteries and worry due to not knowing what the plan is.

      Nuclear takes decades to build and dont forget the decades to decommission, also dont forget the thousands of years of storage and security of the nuclear waste, factor that into the cost of Nuclear power

      Republicans will pivot to alternative energy as the populist wing make a complete take over of the party and throwing away the neoconservatism old guard, you’ll see. Neocons typically support an agenda that promoted fossil fuels and that typically supported foreign policy geared toward protecting and making profits off of countries that sell and distribute fossil fuels. Since that has rapidly changed and republicans tend to support independence from foreign sources of oil, Trump will have to pay off Elon’s support by saying one thing about oil while giving Musk the edge over competition. Trump will still do the song and dance routine about drill baby drill, but he will not stop the further development by private corporations of infrastructure that supplies alternative energy, even in the off chance they do decide to end EV mandates and tax benefits. Trump will simply give Musk the benefits and advantages when it concerns developing and deploying alternative energy.

    You are not a financial expert so. I will correct you thinking. With respect to battery storage systems, there is little technology development that is required to bring new products to market. As we say, there barriers to entry are low. In contrast, the barriers to entry for new cars are high.... Well they were for ICEs, but they are apparently much lower for EVs. Still, simple battery storage has extremely low BTE. That means margins will be low, in the long run. They are high now because demand is far exceeding supply, but because of the low BTE, new supply will come to market to meet that demand. Take for example, GE. They currently do not have a product in this space. But they will soon and they have huge resources to ramp up production and when they do the prices will fall and margins will contract. Heavily. So right now Tesla margins on these systems is around 35% I think. That could easily drop to 10% or even lower in 5 years time.

      Building batteries is obviously easy. My guess is the software Tesla has to direct the power to where and when it is needed, and most likely using AI to predict this in advance, might not be so easy. We will see. But for the home storage part of it, I would assume you are totally correct. It will end up being a low margin commodity type business.

      Lots of battery manufacturers are already out there trying to make sales in this storage market. But there is something about what Tesla provides that you didn't mention: their proprietary energy storage controls. This is not just some simple switches, it is a very sophisticated hardware/software system to make the connection with energy generators and the grid run smoothly. There are numerous cases of utilities buying cheaper batteries but they have control problems. Tesla solved those problems, it just works as promised, which is why they are now getting huge orders. That's the bar that GE will have to meet, and exceed, to make any real headway in this market. They might, they might not, but they will have to prove in field installations that they are at least as good as the field-proven Tesla megapacks.

Musk does not have to buy off Democrats, they already support renewables, and industry often supports paradoxically both sides of a campaign to make sure someone always owes them something. Trump loudly says he will shut down EVs, Musk loudly says hey I will donate to Trump, and Trump does not then say 'oh well, ok except Tesla or we will back down from this EV thing' then yea withdraw the deal. ONLY THEN do you bring in the vehicles and TEST, TEST, TEST and improve things. You don’t build the vehicles then expect everything else to happen MAGICALLY.
