1. Move into open space 2. Look around constantly 3. Stay between defenders 4. MOVE to create space 5. Change direction to create space 6. Change your speed to create space 7. Run at angles to confuse defenders
I’m literally 14, i’ve never had a coach that has taught me how to position myself and i’m determined to make my family happy and i’m determined to make myself happy with improvements. 1. Try going between defenders and if offside or about to be make a diagonal run. 2.When making a straight run don’t try going towards the defender as they just have to run straight and can slide, so drift a little to your other side and take a shot once away. 3. Find open space and look at your surroundings. If there is an open space attack at it and try to confuse the defense so they don’t know who to mark. This will leave you open or if double marked it’ll leave a teammate open. I’m keeping notes and analyzing the game :) just played another match and after practicing a lot more, i’ve gotten a lot more conditioning and learned to find the ball. my hunger for the ball is more than ever and i’m always screaming for it if i’m open. but i have to work on my dribbling a little bit more, i panic a little when i have two defenders on my and i have to practice being more agile. Update: I’ve gotten a lot more understanding of the game and especially making runs as a forward. That was one of significant let downs considering I never played as a true 9 until this season in high school and winger. I need working on my instincts to shoot for goal and top speed, i’ve gotten better at dribbling and agility wise is better. I hope that until my next season as a junior I can hold up for a complete 90 minutes and be a nightmare to play against, it’ll take time but it’s all part of the progress and I’m glad with the progress i’ve made. Diet has to be better, have to push myself even more when conditioning by myself and just play more games to get my instincts right…if anyone has tips lmk
That happens, just make sure you don't take too many heavy touches and you're always conscious when on the ball. Sometimes being direct (if you're more confident) can unnerve the defender and running towards them can give time and open space for the players around you.
Rory XO yeah, i notice that whenever i have a great touch. but whenever i go to accelerate i take too much of a heavy touch. so i’m gonna take small touches to accelerate and then take a heavy touch for a full sprint.
@homework homework thanks, remember that you have to be creative and create plenty of chances. Something i lack in is taking shots, so if you ever have a chance don’t be scared and take the chance. Just finish the play, it’s either you take the chance or you lost the ball because no one else has a good run.
My boyfriend used to play soccer in High School and I’m really trying to understand the game so I can understand the pro games he watches. Thank you for this video!

This is probably one of the most useful videos on RUclips for helping our younger players wrap their heads around these confusing topics. It seems straightforward and logical when you explain it in your video, but out on the field it is a different story.
Great tips! A summary for easy reference... Positioning: 1. Come back to the ball (and show in between defenders) 2. Change directions 3. Change your speed Movement: 1. Always move 2. Always look 3. Don't always run straight
Please make more videos. I've watched all your videos and I really appreciate it. I've been playing soccer since I was 13 but I only played with my buddies and my skills improved very slowly. At first I thought it was because I didn't have that soccer-mentality like my other friends. My favorite run is the diagonal, blind-side run. You start running into the space behind the centre back at the back post. This forces the back line to fall. Then, you slow down just a bit, and go on the blind-side of the centre back at the near post, and dart in front of him. Essentially, you're using one defender to screen the other. It's very difficult to defend against if done properly.

+Festus D Thanks for the feedback, but it looks like RUclips's copyright blocking tech is flagging the footage, so FIFA, UEFA, and the FA Cup have suspended at least Part 1 of the other series. If I get a copyright strike, then I won't be able to put anything more up. I'm pretty sure these videos meet the fair use requirements, so I'm pretty confident they won't come down, but you never know. Glad you got something out of the video though. Take care.
This tutorial is amazing. I can confirm the examples shown in the video have happened in my games. I wish there was another video showing defenders how to counter the moves.

I mainly wanted to learn about soccer ⚽ because I wanted to have something to start a conversation with this boy I liked. I no literally nothing about any type of sport except archery and I STILL understood the video. Now I think I'm starting to like soccer....
A major problem I experienced in playing here in America in my youth was the lack of positional awareness by almost everyone I played with, me included which I realized as I got older and started to understand the game a lot more. Coaches I had never taught us these BASIC things. I'm sorta bitter about it because I feel like myself and a lot of players I grew up with would have benifited so greatly by having a coach that actually understood the game. I played for a really high level club and we had good players but the coaching was terrible when I look back on it.
this helped a lot since it’s been like 10years that i haven’t played soccer since 5 now 15 i understand what’s going on. but the thing is that coaches doesn’t really explain the positions of the field all they do is explain plays and forms or skills, and not focusing on explaining the positions. like there’s people who are new to soccer and the number one thing that’s important is explaining the positions and what they do you know. but this helped me more out bc i was overthinking a lot of what to do or like where they stand at

what a great insightful video. im tired if seeing highlights. people need to understand football is an off the ball game. may i please request a defensive video and i am a box to box midfielder(CM) can you do a video on that and how to switch play with long passes
Thats alright i fully understand to be absouletly greedy the things things i need to work on as a CM are 1. Long passing in terms on switching play the way scholes and gerrard use to. 2. Shooting from outside the box. I hesitate and try to pass the ball into the net. 3. Controlling the tempo of the game. I know its a lot but i wanted to see and hear your views on that as well as the cm position
Thank you!!! I’m doing tryouts and I’m good with drills and everything so I got put on the JV and V group, however I js started playing the year before and NEVER understood positioning, so I’d constantly be out of position and coaches/players would yell at me from the sidelines to do certain things, it’s really degrading but I’m glad I stumbled upon this video
Thanks. I did do a series, but I gave up after RUclips made it too hard to post content. You can find all of the updated links to the series in the description of this video: ruclips.net/video/GO7udua_4sQ/видео.html My apologies, but unfortunately, I can't control what RUclips does :(
Have a 12 year old playing soccer for the first time. She has a lot of natural ability, but doesn't understand the game yet i.e. player positions and how to play without the ball. Thanks for posting this video. Fantastic information too!
Thanks for the feedback. There's a few more on my channel that others are finding helpful. The full set is also on my Vimeo channel, where the copyright system is much more forgiving. Take care!
+Will Pocock Good to hear this is helping people. I've been working feverishly on another one, and I just finished it. It'll be uploaded overnight, so you'll see a new set of four videos tomorrow morning. Hope you enjoy them.
Please please make more series! I haven't found any other videos as clear and easy for young players to understand. You are making a huge impact on young players. Thank you!!!
Had been looking for so long on positioning and space. Finally found this video and particularly like the special yellow "vision line that represents the eyes. Please load up more of these stuffs. '
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad people are watching this one. I made it for my daughter's team and just left it on. I didn't realize people were actually watching until 7 months later. I put up four more new ones if you haven't seen them already. Take care.
Great video. About time someone created an analysis of creating space, drawing defenders to/away from yourself, and true spatial awareness. I really liked the head tracker you utilized. Please create more videos of moving without the ball utilizing the head tracker. I am trying to teach these concepts to my son and your video was extremely helpful.
One of the best videos explaining the important role of awareness in football. Kudos to you my friend. This in my opinion should be the grammar of every kid learning to play football. My son is made to watch this video regularly as repetition is the mother of all learning.
Thank you so much for this. I’ve always had no idea what to look for or where to stand or run to. I plan to start watching pro soccer to get a better understanding and video is gonna make those study sessions way more effective. The editing with the arrows and circles helped a ton for my understanding too. Seriously thanks so much 🙏
Thanks for this videos I'm the manager of my team and I'm trying to teach my players this concept but it's hard to illustrate with words so I'm just gonna share this while vid with them :)
Hi Howard,Many thanks for taking the time to collate and explain these videos. My son has benefited greatly from watching this video the last few days as part of training his soccer brain. The difference on the field was fantastic. We both thank you and I hope you continue your great work.Regards,Mark
Thanks for the feedback. I tried to upload more but RUclips's copyright system kept blocking the content. Wasted a lot of time. I almost gave up, but then noticed that Vimeo is more forgiving. This winter, I hope to upload some more. Hopefully I'll have time this year. Take care.
This is outstanding! Please do more. I’ve been yelling all the basics at my kids and all they hear is blah blah blah…your videos give me a language….. In addition, we need more coaches that understand and introduce these basics in America.
1. Move into open space
2. Look around constantly
3. Stay between defenders
4. MOVE to create space
5. Change direction to create space
6. Change your speed to create space
7. Run at angles to confuse defenders
So it's always about space, like a cosmonaut.
I’m literally 14, i’ve never had a coach that has taught me how to position myself and i’m determined to make my family happy and i’m determined to make myself happy with improvements.
1. Try going between defenders and if offside or about to be make a diagonal run.

Can you please give me tips on dribbling and positioning as a winger? Please!
Most videos of football analysis on youtube are unclear and even erratic. Yours on the other hand are helpul and succinct. Thanks for the effort!
Thanks for the feedback. I'm still trying to post more but RUclips's copyright robots are blocking a lot of footage.
Still can’t believe Messi joined inter Miami
Watched this before a match today and it made a huuuuggge difference. I just did the between defenders advice
is there a video like that for center backs or defense players?
Simple is the best way on the field. The clips are very clear explained and the methods are easy to understand. Great work.👍
Ole Gunner is starting to watch these. He's getting desperate
Sure 🙂
I really wish this guy would do a whole series of videos. Excellent tutorial on movement and positioning.
Thanks. I did do a series, but I gave up after RUclips made it too hard to post content. You can find all of the updated links to the series in the description of this video: ruclips.net/video/GO7udua_4sQ/видео.html My apologies, but unfortunately, I can't control what RUclips does :(
If only my team didn't toe punt it all the time to the marked man.
ive just recently started playing soccer for the first time and this video by far has been the most helpful!!!
Glad to help out. Best of luck learning the beautiful game!
Most basic thing of football is calling FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL

No
Have a 12 year old playing soccer for the first time.
Take care!
I just watched u
What is soccer?
Lol. In short, soccer is what countries that have American football call the beautiful game. Football makes more sense, I agree, but what can you do?
Superb video, hope to see more in the future. In depth analysis like this is too rare on RUclips
+Will Pocock Good to hear this is helping people. I've been working feverishly on another one, and I just finished it. It'll be uploaded overnight, so you'll see a new set of four videos tomorrow morning. Hope you enjoy them.
+Howard Chang thanks a lot, really looking forward to checking them out!
This is absolutely perfect! This is what I needed for my JV, thank you!
Please please make more series! I haven't found any other videos as clear and easy for young players to understand. You are making a huge impact on young players. Thank you!!!
That is a great demonstration of the psychology of football well done sir
Had been looking for so long on positioning and space. Finally found this video and particularly like the special yellow "vision line that represents the eyes. Please load up more of these stuffs. '
Thanks. I can't put up more until September because of the stupid copyright strike RUclips put on my account. I should have some done by then though.
This is a great video. I appreciate the fact that you use such diverse videos
One of the best and simplest videos i've seen for movement! Thanks
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad people are watching this one. I made it for my daughter's team and just left it on. I didn't realize people were actually watching until 7 months later. I put up four more new ones if you haven't seen them already. Take care.
one of the best youtube football coaching.. learn a lot actually!!
best soccer video i have watched for the night .KEEP MAKING STRIKER VIDEOS WHEN EVER U GET NEW IDEAS .. it's very helpful
Thank you so much! Please make more videos. This is the best basic soccer video I've watched.
Great tips supported by game foot at the top level. Difficult concepts to understand. You explained it in easy to understand ways! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this. I’ve always had no idea what to look for or where to stand or run to. I plan to start watching pro soccer to get a better understanding and video is gonna make those study sessions way more effective. The editing with the arrows and circles helped a ton for my understanding too.
Seriously thanks so much 🙏
Thanks for this videos I'm the manager of my team and I'm trying to teach my players this concept but it's hard to illustrate with words so I'm just gonna share this while vid with them :)
as a striker this is valuable information thank you, I hope you gonna upload new content!
You're phenomenal mate honestly best videos for analysis I have watched on RUclips a shame you don't have much content
I'm trying to understand football because I'm a new fan of the USWNT. This was a great video and so helpful! Thank you!
Hi Howard,Many thanks for taking the time to collate and explain these videos. My son has benefited greatly from watching this video the last few days as part of training his soccer brain. The difference on the field was fantastic. We both thank you and I hope you continue your great work.Regards,Mark
Omg i have never knew this i can not believe . Thanks alot . Please make more of theose videos we love them
These are great videos and as you point out they don't have much else like this on youtube so this is very unique.
Soooo perfect man, you make it look so easy. You are truthfully the best more videos like this please!!!
Thanks for the feedback. I tried to upload more but RUclips's copyright system kept blocking the content. Wasted a lot of time. I almost gave up, but then noticed that Vimeo is more forgiving. This winter, I hope to upload some more. Hopefully I'll have time this year. Take care.
Howard Chang awesome! Honestly your videos are so detailed and explain so much. Keep up the good work mate.
This is outstanding! Please do more. I’ve been yelling all the basics at my kids and all they hear is blah blah blah…your videos give me a language…..
In addition, we need more coaches that understand and introduce these basics in America.
Fantastic. Please give us more of this.Need it to coach my grandson Josiah.
No one's mentioned how thoughtful he was to blur out the scorelines for the losing team's fans especially the 8-2 and 7-1 thrashings!
