Nice video. I just ordered my first ever Jeep, that looks almost identical to the one in this video. I ordered a brand new 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon that was ordered on 11-30-2020 and then came in to the dealership on 02-12-2021. I was very pleasantly surprised at how fast my Rubicon got built and delivered to the dealership. I’ve off roaded my entire life but have always done so I trucks. However, I have wanted a Jeep for years and almost pulled the trigger on buying one on a handful of occasions but never did for some reason or another but I am now really excited that I finally did.
I just ordered my 2019 Rubicon (Ocean Blue) and I am new to the Jeep Family! I cannot wait to get it! Your video is quite informative and innovative (specially from the point of view of a JK owner). I like what you have done with the Plati-dip! What a great idea! I was not aware that you could order the wider rock rails! I will make sure that I do add this option. Very nice video overall! 👍
My JK vs JL comparison (for me, a 2 door Rubicon soft top) My JL pros -possibly the new 2.0 engine (I also like the Pentastar) -8 speed transmission -quicker throttle response -soft top without ‘cross bar’ -soft top no zippers -quieter soft top -body color roll bar -flat horizontal dash -lighter/aerodynamic tweaks = better MPG -real metal interior detail -real hardware (not faux bolts) interior -more inputs and other interior conveniences -larger cup holders -air vents for cooling under hood -more rake in windshield (think rock damage) -doors stay opened, and close better -cabin is slightly longer -doors remove easier/faster -telescopic adjusting steering wheel -bigger storage tub -stronger and lighter tailgate -better hood latches -easier drain plug access (without needing to move carpet) My JL cons -auto start/stop (I know it can be disabled) -the bumpers (front and back) -front running lights on fender flare -too much digital visual “noise” on dash -rear camera (I know I can take it off - and I will) -no hard drive in radio to store music -looser steering -the $ cost $
Nice review. Where did you get the Mopar roof rails with locks? I've looked at most sites. They only carry ones that don't lock, Mopar included? Thanks
Excellent video! I have a full size truck and am really having a hard time justifying stepping away from those comforts to a more versatile JL. What don't you like?
I have a RAM Rebel 1500 crew cab as well. Sometimes you just need a truck for space and hauling or towing things, other times the Jeep is preferable, like on trails, or when less 'stuff' is needed.
I noticed some rubicon’s are cheaper than others, is that just mostly because of options? I also notice some don’t have the red hooks but the ones that do seem more expensive? Just curious why.
I noticed that you added the inside top pads, being a $495.00 option are you happy with them, what difference have you noticed they add, would you order them again?
they came with my JLU from the factory. I never had anything in my JKU. They look nice, do seem to help cut down on a little noise. I'm curious how we'll they'll hold up and stay in place over time. we'll see.
Hi. I wanna know if you can mount a 35 spare on the rear door with no mods on the rubicon? I'm quite sure you can't on a Sahara or sport. But what about the rubicon?
Jeep and Mopar clearly state the rack is not recommend for carrying paddlesports products. But it is rated to 150 lbs. My suspicion is that kayaks vary so much in length, width and weight and tie down methods that it's extremely difficult to 'approve' the rack for carrying them since loads and aerodynamics can vary so widely. I think you could likely do it in most situations, but do so at your own risk. I doubt they'd warranty any damage.
Damon Bungard Thx! I have a large 80gal pyranha Whitewater kayak that I’m wanting to mount on my new JLU rubicon. Guess I just need to be patient and wait for more aftermarket products. Can you post a video of your kayak transport set up the next time you’re headed out? Thx man.
After a days driving on unimproved roads and gravel on the Blue Ridge, I came home to find a bog rock chip on my rear passenger door hinge. Did you plasti-dip your h(byes yourself or did you have someone else do it? I saw yours turned out pretty professional, so if you did it, what procedure did you use?
I did them myself. Post #3 is this thread: www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/damons-white-jlu-rubicon-build.4819/. It's pretty easy, just mask them off, spray multiple coats (4+), demask the last one while it's still a little wet for a good parting line.
Regarding the underfloor storage in the rear, why not a drawer system so it will be available with coolers and such in the rear? Just pull a drawer out with your tools and such.
You could put a drawer system back there -- pros and cons to that. I want to be able to stack two kennels, or a kennel on top of a cooler, and I can't do that if some of the vertical space needed is occupied by a drawer system. Drawer systems also tend to be relatively difficult to remove. My payload is constantly changing, so I'd rather deal with having to remove what's back there to get to tools when necessary and keep maximum storage space. (I take most of the tools out of there before I go on off road trips anyways to lower the likelihood of having to do that).
I was actually thinking from the factory not add in aftermarket. Same floor space and height available but the storage area below the floor in a drawer. Open the tailgate and there is a drawer you pull out. Just a thought.
Phil - I installed a ARB drawer system, its about 10" tall with a slider floor "top" so access to cargo is easy. Pretty happy with it and it really increased by useable cargo area.
You have to buy them -- you can't get as a factory option. I got mine from my local dealership parts department, but you can also get the Performance JLU Rock Rails from places like Quadratec
Hi! the roof rack holds 150 pounds you say. Is that 'rolling weight'? Can it hold a rooftop tent with an adult in it you think? Thanks again. Great vid.
Like the video, I owe too much on my JKU but will get a JL in a few years, or the truck that's coming. Who makes the door covers you have for protection from the dog?
I did them myself. Post #3 is this thread: www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/damons-white-jlu-rubicon-build.4819/. It's pretty easy, just mask them off, spray multiple coats (4+), demask the last one while it's still a little wet for a good parting line.
Thanks. That's an Orion 45. You can see all the sizes and the accessories that make them into the ultimate 4x4 and camping setup cooler at www.orioncoolers.com
The hood vents are not functional. There is only a small area for water drainage that runs into an area inside the hood insulation that exits the side of the hood.
The back seats fold nearly flat. I don't think you'll be able to get a bike in without taking the front wheel off. I always keep my bikes on the outside on a tire rack or hitch rack
What’s your opinion on the leather seats vs cloth? My wife and I have a 2014 Wrangler and had a ton of rain come in, so much we had to use the drain. I was thinking if I bought the cloth seats and silicone them, I wouldn’t see potential issues with the leather seats shrinking etc.
On my JKU we covered the cloth seats with neoprene vests from Rugged Ridge. On the new JLU the leather is nice and we'll probably keep it as is, using a temporary rear seat cover the EZYDOG Drive as needed. Then on the front seats something like the Carhartt pullover seat covers that will go on for specific adventures, then come back off when back home as daily driver.
Not a fan of the signals on the fenders. What if you want to have the small cut fenders or metal smittybilt fenders or something. I guess they will probably come up with something
Great video! Can you post the Mopar number for the cross bars? My local dealer doesn’t think they are out yet. Did you get them from Jeep or another web site? Thanks so much!
I got mine from Quadratec. www.quadratec.com/p/mopar/removable-roof-rack-kit-jeep-wrangler-jl?gclid=CjwKCAjwk9HWBRApEiwA6mKWaaYenjuTAIKX0gt9b_iz8ucqMGdjJc8RQddsMRH_6boZX5UfLb7zDRoCAxoQAvD_BwE. Mopar Part #: 82215387
I think that's a function of a lot of things - mostly how thick you put it on. I haven't seen and chipping and peeling yet. If you apply with thick coats it's not brittle -- more rubbery, like the durometer of multiple layers of electrical tape. Putting on the wider Performance Rock Rails has also immensely helped block rocks from hitting the hinges at all in the first place.
Hi Francisco -- it's the Meridian light by Princeton-Tec. Mine is constant on or strobe, but they also offer a constant on that makes more sense in a Jeep. princetontec.com/product-category/outdoor/?subcategory=Marker%20lights
Great review! I'm especially interested in being able to use a roof rack. The only thing keeping me from owning the JLU Rubicon would be the price. My research leads me to believe the price for the 2018 JLU Rubicon has cracked the $50,000 barrier. I like the optional equipment you have. So I'm guessing that your Jeep with options approaches the mid $50's. Am I in the ballpark?

I was planning on buying a new 2018 jeep rubicon. I see that you seem to have a lot of experience with jeeps. I was kind of torn between choosing white or black paint job, as black seems to look cooler but I am afraid of scratches showing more in black, after off roading. What do you suggest? Thanks
My prior Jeep was dark maroon (Red Rock Crystal), and dark colors definitely show scratches and dirt more than light colors. White is easy to keep clean, and won't tend to show scratches in the clear coat.
Damon Bungard What do you think of the 285/75r17 KO2 tire size, do you know of any upwards(necessary bump stop adjustment) or steering lock to lock clearance issues for a stock JLUR.
The tires are a great size for my all-around purposes. There are no needs for a lift at all, and you can even go to 35" tires now on Rubicons from the factory, with no lift or any suspension changed needed with no rubbing on Rubicons.
How's the wind noise in your?? I test drove one that was way worse than my JK which is unacceptable for me with a $50K Jeep. I will test drive a few more and see if its in multiple ones.
My JLU is definitely quieter than my JKU. There's still some wind noise, and the aerodynamics still are what they are. Even though the slanted the windshield a bit more, it's still largely a box being pushed through the air. I do have the hard top liner in my JLU which may play a small factor.
yes, it's got plenty of 'pep'. My old '08 JKU definitely had to work at times. No I do not plan on going to 35's -- the stock 33's are very good for my purposes as an overland vehicle and daily driver.
unfortunately those hood vents are not functional. The side vents are, but not the hoods. I heard that a while ago, but just recently a video was posted of a man who removed the vent to find out. 100% not functional. ruclips.net/video/ddgZfOVVGI8/видео.html
These JL Jeeps are going to suck balls when you try to rock crawl and you stop for a second and it shuts down and then you start rolling backwards then you open the door and your jeep completely shut down game over
I don't believe any Wrangler has had a 5000# towing capacity. 3500 is same as the JK capacity. You can see towing capacities here: www.jeep.com/jeep-capabilities/towing.html
Nice video. I just ordered my first ever Jeep, that looks almost identical to the one in this video. This must be the best walk around video I have seen about the JL. Well done.
Thanks! I've spent more trail time with it now and will have a follow up soon with some more detail and talking points
Yeah, great job! I like the new JLU.
Excellent review. I bought my first Jeep Rubicon JL 8 months ago, and love it.
Great walk around video and giving your perspective from a previous JK owner.
It looks so good in the wilderness. So comfortable.
Thanks Dude! Great Video!! Really like the whole aspect also dog covers that will be a MUST!
Dog's transportation please!

Well done Damon! Have a JK Sahara 2015 myself, love the JLU :)
Thank you Damon, I love JL, hope it will be soon here in South Africa. Can't wait for your next video. keep it up.
I just got my 2020 rubicon in ocean blue and I love it. Cheers!!! Welcome to the family
The plasti-dip is clever, will give that a try when my JL is delivered!
My JK vs JL comparison (for me, a 2 door Rubicon soft top)
My JL pros
-possibly the new 2.0 engine (I also like the Pentastar)
-8 speed transmission
-quicker throttle response
-soft top without ‘cross bar’
-soft top no zippers
-quieter soft top
-body color roll bar
-flat horizontal dash
-lighter/aerodynamic tweaks = better MPG
-real metal interior detail
-real hardware (not faux bolts) interior
-more inputs and other interior conveniences
-larger cup holders
-air vents for cooling under hood
-more rake in windshield (think rock damage)
-doors stay opened, and close better
-cabin is slightly longer
-doors remove easier/faster
-telescopic adjusting steering wheel
-bigger storage tub
-stronger and lighter tailgate
-better hood latches
-easier drain plug access (without needing to move carpet)
My JL cons
-auto start/stop (I know it can be disabled)
-the bumpers (front and back)
-front running lights on fender flare
-too much digital visual “noise” on dash
-rear camera (I know I can take it off - and I will)
-no hard drive in radio to store music
-looser steering
-the $ cost $
Excellent walk around video!
Nice video, keep them coming 👍
Finally a rubicon that doesn’t have a red dash!
If you order the tan leather seats, the red dash is not there. But, if you order the black leather or cloth seats, the red dash is there.
I don’t like the red dash either. Mine didn’t have it
That’s a nice ride ... looks great.
nice job! It's also the first review or even mention of the roof bars I have heard.
Best review yet!!!
Nice review!
Excellent review sir. Respect
Great video and amazing JL
Great video! Looking forward to upgrade videos
this is my first one on Yakima accessories: ruclips.net/video/HFDvNgWboRI/видео.html
Nice Jeep! I’m getting mine soon.
Nice JLU! Enjoy it
great video 1:10 i knew this is gonna be a great review.
Great review!!
I like new wrangler, I think only rubicon looks good
Thank you 🙏🏻 for this video
I thought all the Rubis have the red interior center panel; nice to see this option with the lighter seats.
great review
Thank you, very informative! :)
Beautiful jeep ✌🏻
Great job

Do you have a video of the PlastiDip door hinges? I cannot believe no one makes guards for these.
I just purchased a 2018 rubicon also own a 2014 Jk Shara
Hi! Thanks for a great review! Can you please tell where did you get that bug shield hood protector and plastic hood latches? Thank you!
I made them myself with Plastic-Dip spray coating
saya suka RUBICON WRANGLER .... MANTAP
Nice review. Where did you get the Mopar roof rails with locks? I've looked at most sites. They only carry ones that don't lock, Mopar included? Thanks
Yakima SKS core locks fit in the Mopar rack
Damon Bungard awesome and thank you
Excellent video!
Wonder if you can fit a set of golf clubs behind the back seats without folding them down?
I noticed some rubicon’s are cheaper than others, is that just mostly because of options? I also notice some don’t have the red hooks but the ones that do seem more expensive? Just curious why.
I noticed that you added the inside top pads, being a $495.00 option are you happy with them, what difference have you noticed they add, would you order them again?

Nice video, but I thought Rubicon’s came with a red dashboard as standard. I like the silver better, but how did you get it? Did you request it?
It's just what came on mine. I think it's what's standard when you get the tan leather seats
Ahh, thanks.
Nice video. How about the driving dynamics?
I use mopar roof rack for my JL. but, your's looks like you install aftermarket locking key for the cover. what kind of locking system is that?
The Yakima locks fit it
Nice job on the video! Looks like you have the trailer hitch ( tow package) but no AUX switches?
I added the trailer hitch myself, but do not have the towing package. That lets me use hitch carriers like Pakmule and Yakima bike carriers
Hi. I wanna know if you can mount a 35 spare on the rear door with no mods on the rubicon? I'm quite sure you can't on a Sahara or sport. But what about the rubicon?
I am not entirely sure, but yes I believe you can.
Nice JL walk around! Quick question, Can you mount your kayak on top of the Mopar crossbars? Any issues?
Jeep and Mopar clearly state the rack is not recommend for carrying paddlesports products. But it is rated to 150 lbs. My suspicion is that kayaks vary so much in length, width and weight and tie down methods that it's extremely difficult to 'approve' the rack for carrying them since loads and aerodynamics can vary so widely. Do you think that rack would work to lift the top and hang it from the ceiling with?
May work, but I probably wouldn't trust that since it's designed for loads in the other direction.
great video, who make the kennel that looks nice
After a days driving on unimproved roads and gravel on the Blue Ridge, I came home to find a bog rock chip on my rear passenger door hinge.

Hey, Jackson Kayaks. Those are made like 15 minutes from me, lol!
Awesome video. How did you get the side rail running boards. I just ordered mine and that wasn’t an option
Great vid.
no, you'd need a stronger rack that ties into the frame, like a Gobi, for a root top tent system.
Like the video, I owe too much on my JKU but will get a JL in a few years, or the truck that's coming. Who makes the door covers you have for protection from the dog?
Side door covers are from Kurgo. Bench seat cover is from EZYDOG
Do the rear side windows pop out like they do on the power sliding top? Nice ride by the way, excellent review.
bigdawgfan72 no they do not pop out on the hard top
Damon Bungard Ok, thanks. I Love the JL. Only way I can get one is to lose my Cummins. That’s not happening! Used JK it will be.
If you don't mind, how did you plasti-dip? did you take the doors off? what was the process? thanks...Very good idea!

Go pro plug? Do you mean USB-C ?
Great video- what are the details on your cooler?
Thanks. That's an Orion 45. You can see all the sizes and the accessories that make them into the ultimate 4x4 and camping setup cooler at www.orioncoolers.com
Did you notice that the hood latches have a notch to secure the winch cable when you use it?
there is a notch there yes, but I can't say that I really like how well that works.
Nice ! What's the $ on this setup ? Thanks
does water enter those hood vents when you drop down into a water crossing?
The hood vents are not functional. There is only a small area for water drainage that runs into an area inside the hood insulation that exits the side of the hood.
Do the back seats fold down or do you take them out?
Afterwards, can I fit a bike in the back without taking off the front wheel?
.
Then on the front seats something like the Carhartt pullover seat covers that will go on for specific adventures, then come back off when back home as daily driver.
How did you get that large storage area in the back under the mat? I have a JLUR and my storage area is much smaller?
I'm not sure, maybe it's a function of which audio option yours has? I have the premium sound with 8.4" screen.
Any one know what a good roof rack that you can strap kayaks down to for a 4 door jk? And maybe if there are any that are easy to take on and off?
Not a fan of the signals on the fenders. What if you want to have the small cut fenders or metal smittybilt fenders or something. I guess they will probably come up with something
EzEddie the older jeeps had them.
1997 jeep Wranglers
You can take those off and install aftermarket fender or get a set custom made
Great video! Can you post the Mopar number for the cross bars? My local dealer doesn’t think they are out yet. Did you get them from Jeep or another web site? Thanks so much!
I got mine from Quadratec. www.quadratec.com/p/mopar/removable-roof-rack-kit-jeep-wrangler-jl?gclid=CjwKCAjwk9HWBRApEiwA6mKWaaYenjuTAIKX0gt9b_iz8ucqMGdjJc8RQddsMRH_6boZX5UfLb7zDRoCAxoQAvD_BwE. Mopar Part #: 82215387
Will the plasti-dip hold up to rocks and prevent chips? I thought it chipped easy and then peeled off afterwards?
I think that's a function of a lot of things - mostly how thick you put it on. I haven't seen and chipping and peeling yet. If you apply with thick coats it's not brittle -- more rubbery, like the durometer of multiple layers of electrical tape. Putting on the wider Performance Rock Rails has also immensely helped block rocks from hitting the hinges at all in the first place.
Why not try that spray that they put on a truck bed? I forgot what is called but that will hold up nice
On Costco auto and jeep.com I haven't seen upgrade rock sliders. Awesome.

Yes, you can expect a dealer MSRP sticker price over $50K on 2018 JLU Rubicons.
I got my 2020 rubicon jl for 50,700
How did you plasti dip the hinges did you take the doors off?
I did them myself. Post #3 is this thread: www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/damons-white-jlu-rubicon-build.4819/. It's pretty easy, just mask them off, spray multiple coats (4+), demask the last one while it's still a little wet for a good parting line.
It needs that 3.0 diesel ram puts in its 1500 pickups
Wade Wilson they will have that option next year I believe.
think impact rated sockets
i like your dog seat cover and the door protectors can you tell me more so i can get the right ones
The seat cover is the EZYDOG Drive. The door protectors I made myself from Plasti-Dip spray

No problems at all
Damon Bungard that’s good to hear man. I know a few who got unlucky.
Where you get your door hinge protector? Thanks
It's spray on Plasti-Dip that I did myself
9:35 Never let a Wrangler hood slam down like that!
Since you say this is the dual use family vehicle, I assume that means you still have the truck as well?
Yes, still have the RAM Rebel as well

Where do you put the stroller?
We have a BOB stroller we collapse and put on the roof, or a folding stroller fits with the small section of the rear seat folded down.
I want to buy a jeep, and a cooler now. 😀

Damon, any mechanical issues yet on the Rubicon?
No, none at all so far. And that includes some good 'exercising' at Windrock Park here in TN for the Jeep Jamboree.
Does the JLU seem a lot more Peppy then your old JK and are you going to 35's
yes, it's got plenty of 'pep'. My old '08 JKU definitely had to work at times. No I do not plan on going to 35's -- the stock 33's are very good for my purposes as an overland vehicle and daily driver.
What are you getting for real world mpg?
With the roof rack and awning on, Ive been getting 18-20 between TN back roads and some interstate driving around 65-70 mph.
Damon Bungard thanks for the reply. Found your videos and I’m a new subscriber keep up the good work.
The hiss on this video must mean you recorded with an iPhone....haha
Good video, overall!
used a GoPro
You said the top hood vents were functional and they are not, they are just fake, only the side vents are real...!
unfortunately those hood vents are not functional. The side vents are, but not the hoods. I heard that a while ago, but just recently a video was posted of a man who removed the vent to find out. 100% not functional. ruclips.net/video/ddgZfOVVGI8/видео.html
These JL Jeeps are going to suck balls when you try to rock crawl and you stop for a second and it shuts down and then you start rolling backwards then you open the door and your jeep completely shut down game over
The Auto-Off disengages in 4Low, and you can also turn it off via a button on the dash
So they dropped the towing capacity from 5,000# to 3,500#? That's a hose detriment.
I don't believe any Wrangler has had a 5000# towing capacity. 3500 is same as the JK capacity. You can see towing capacities here: www.jeep.com/jeep-capabilities/towing.html
Huge, not hose
