My first concert ever and I was 16 years old. I will never forget!

I was at this show when I was 16! My friend and I were right up front and center. We were right up to the barricade, and everyone rushed the stage when Metallica came to the stage, and my friend got crushed. We were both lifted over the barricade, and we got to see Metallica backstage while he recovered. Then Dokken came out, and we were able to get our spot back for the rest of the show. This was a the Cotton Bowl, and it was stupid hot! The event staff was spraying us all with fire hoses to keep us from literally dying out there!
I remember Sammy losing his voice and Michael finishing the show on vocals, but Sammy lasted longer than I remembered. It was obvious from the first song his voice was shredded. I didn't get to go to the free show because I was in the Army at that point, and couldn't make it.

I was at the show too n endured the Scorps up close...by the time Van Halen came out n 2 songs in I went over the rail n chilled understage.
I was in the USAF in my last year n by early 1989 was done with my 4 years, so moved back to DC area...n missed the free concert too!
Keep rocking but keep Jesus as your #1! 🙏✝️

by that point in the night I was somewhere way off to the side and literally in the back row of the high grandstands, just waiting for it to be over. Of course if you would have asked me at the time I would have told you how much fun it was. Watching this, though, I feel a little vindicated. My memory is that everybody but the Scorpions was HORRIBLE. Courtesy of youtube I have now confirmed that at least Metallica and Van Halen were indeed just awful. Good bands for the radio, but maybe not so much live...

I was front row, slightly left of center stage. When Eddie sat down on the edge of the stage, during his guitar solo, he was directly in front of me. This was 18 days before my 16th birthday. By far the most memorable concert I have been to. Sammy was feeling under the weather, so they cut the show a little short. He came through on his promise to make up for it. It was the downtown show in 1991, but I missed it.

Never thought I'd end up seeing any of the footage from it though it's so awesome! Earlier in the day about 25,000 people got into a cup war of throwing wadded-up beer cups back and forth at one another it was absolutely crazy never seen anything like that! ***** I'm pretty sure Alex did have triggers on his bass drums, plus Alex used a full electronic kit for a few songs. If you watch the Tokyo 89 Video, he used the electronic kit for Mine All Mine. The sound is obvious on the regular kit that there is a trigger involved.

Before cell phones rendered it useless to enforce, recording of any kind was strictly forbidden at live shows so be thankful this exists at all.
