Easy Fix for Nikon DSLR flash not popping up (no disassembly)

- The built-in flash on my Nikon D3300 was sometimes getting "stuck" and not popping up when it was supposed to, even though there was an audible click from the release mechanism. I found a simple way that seems to work to unstick it, which may be applicable to other models too, as they all use pretty similar popup flash mechanisms.
fast forward to 2:20 to find what you're here for.
I tried.din't worked😔
Nope, didn't work on my D5100, and I've tried for over 30 minutes. I even inserted a feeler gauge and pressed against the hold-down hook, but it is jammed (the feeler gauge releases the flash on my D7100 ever time).
Hey bro, how did you got that fixed
@@jainanimesh7224 I fix it just by putting my nail into gap
@@mrRamzes2002 hey , I tried doing it multiple times but still it's kind of stuck.
@@jainanimesh7224 while holding button?
My D80 pop up flash would not pop up. I heard loud click when I pressed the little flash button, but still would not pop up. I was reluctant to try to pry it with a tool, but I was able to slip a piece of paper slightly under an edge and while pressing the button, it popped open. I felt the edge that is just above the word "NIKON" it it was sticky. So, I used a Q-tip and some 91% alcohol and cleaned the edge and the corresponding part above, dried with a little compressed air and that solved the problem.
Yeah I had to pry mine open with scissors it had some gunk on the inside that might've made it sticky. Only time will tell tho
WoW! Great catch! Thanks for the tip.
thanks for the sharing. it worked for me repairing my D750. thumbs up.
This worked for me. Thank you!!
Actually, I found that by making sure that the camera was A) turned ON; and B) that the Zoom Ring on the lens was extended, it worked every time. But it's good to know if it sticks, the pinch should help.
Hi, this was happening with my D700 and your advice worked like magic. So simple and so, so helpful. I really appreciate you sharing such a great tip! Thanks very much.
I have d750, one day I started noticing it doesn't pop. I thought it's some settings and some google searches, they said flash mode etc it automatic etc. also, there's a small light, between the lens and the Shutter button also works as a flash light (may be?). anyway, I squeezed and pull it a bit and it popped but would open when I pressed the flash button. then I threw it across the room and now, it's always popped.
Joking, thanks to your video and some comments. it turns out, after I helped it a number of time it'll pop when I pressed the button. I need to gently close it to prevent it from getting stocked again, I think.
This will save you big bucks...... all local camera shops wanted me to send to Nikon $$$$ ($25 - $100 just for estimate) ... This worked. but be patience as my first attempt was unsuccessful... came back to it later in day... and didnt press flash buttom but half pressed sutter button to active flash mechanism, while very firmly squeezing and pushing slight forward... magic.... it popped open.. Working fine... Thank you for sharing...
You saved my ass mate. Cheers!
As he did mine
I am having the opposite problem my flash won’t fold back down
my Nikon d3300 has a ? flashing and flash doesn't pop up . any ideas
Thanks so much! I had this problem with my camera and was worried I’d broken it but this has fixed it right up! Absolutely made my night, thanks for sharing :)
Hello , i did try ..now it's working ..thank you
Unfortunantley it didnt work on my d3100
Exactly what my d5200 was doing!
Thanks ever so much!
This helped massively, thank you very much
Thanks for solution
Thanks a lot... you saved a big time. I'm here for a shoot. And while adjusting camera, i found flash is non popping up. And this is my first photo shoot !!!! Then like a magic i found your video. It worked. Thanks a lot.
Thank you!
Worked like a charm!
You are AWESOME!!!! I had the same issues, and did what you suggested and it now works GREAT!!!!! Thank you so very much!!!!
I did try , now it's working thank you
This video and George Laun's alcohol tip did the trick. My girlfriend's 3300 was having this same problem and the local camera guy wanted $25 just for a diagnosis fee and to keep it for 6 weeks. Found this video and fixed it in 20 minutes. Thanks Guys 👌
You just fixed my D40 that I've had for years! I rarely have ever wanted to use flash, usually doing lots of low-light photography for abstract images but now I have a few things to go try - thanks!
fix it, thank you so much!!!
it worked You're the best !!!
it worksssssssssssssss thank you so muchhhhhh
Helpful but awfully wordy.
Thanks it is very helpfull
Thank you. I thought it was a menu selection that I was missing. Brilliant thanks again.
It working.. Thanks
thank you its working
Thank You so much, It work Just fine.
2:20 waste of 1st 2 min
Just bought a second had red D3300 and although very happy with it, I noted the flash didn't appear to work. Trying your method fixed it. Thank you very much.
Wow bro!!! I just made it rn!! Its just actually worked!! Thanks to this legend man!!! More power!! ❤
Excellent Goog job
My flash stacked and i tried wht u showed ok worked but flash doesnt work. Do you think may i have change something to settings of camera?
My Nikon D7100 was having the same problem and that fix it. Thanks.
Did not help at all. My 5100 still stuck. Nice waiting a till after 1:00 to get the point of this video - stuck flash.... ugh
Andrew Wolfsberg did you ever figure yours out? I have a 5100 and it won’t even let me activate the flash option
Same priblem with my d5100
Hoping you returned it under warranty. It will not improve with age. Mine now has the tiny plastic tab broken off inside so the spring can't push the flash up under its own steam. Camera techs are less common and more expensive than neurosurgeons.
Thank you so much! This helped me!
It worked for my P950, too! Thank you for the fix!!!
My dslr nikon d3300... not clicking in flash light... Or temperature in heat in display white
Oh for those who might ask... my camera is a Nikon D5100 (3yrs old) and jammed while in Grand Canyon. Think closing with sideways press vs straight down may have taken out of alignment.
Thanks this helped alot

Didn't work for me. My DX5100 (flash used to work fine, but stopped about 5 years ago, so I stopped using this camera) makes a barely audible click when I hit the flash selector in P mode. I pushed, pulled and squeezed the flash, but it did not release upward. Don't want to pry/force it open just yet. Any other advice? Did anyone else have the same unsolveable (so far) problem?
My d5100 was the same. I forced it open by sticking my fingernail in the gap. Didn't take much to open it
Wow ! I've had this problem since yesterday. Found this vid, tried it.... HOORAY ! It works right away ! Thanks a lot !
Thank you! I was trying to figure this out for years 😅 I knew RUclips would help
thank you for this, solved the problem and thanks for the CC. this deaf photographer thanks you
It worked thank you I'm worried it stuck forever 🤣
Thanks, I started to panic as to why my flash did not pop up. I thought it may have been a menu thing. I thought was I going to have to do a full reset to see if that did the trick. Then I came on here and woooot it now works.
NO WAY it actually worked tysm
It came out but the flash isnt working any more :(
This helped getting my d400 flash working again!
Save time and watch from 2:20
Yes, what a lot of unnecessary information up until then.
i was pissed that my flash wasn’t popping up , didn’t think it was a great idea to try to force it up with my nails , once i finally did i found mf sand from the beach all up in it 🙃 works okay now
Thanks man. Just got my D3300 and this was the only problem I had.
With a little patience it worked! Thank you
Thank you! I just had the problem tonight
Thank you. Its very helpful video.
This helped to get my D7000 flash popping up again. Thank you.
Hi ,
How can I remove the flash if it is not installation correctly ??
Looks like your locking mechanism is broken.
I had a problem with my D5600 today and the flash disintegrated pop up so I smelled some plastic burning 😫😫😫
How did you resolve the problem?
it worked on my D600. Thanks mate
Flush not working in my nikon d3400 what i can do
Thanks so much for sharing! I had the exact same problem and your trick worked to fix it.
Thank you this really helped me with my camera 👍🏼!!
Mine doesn’t even click. Does the battery have to be on full for the system to even notice that you want to use the flash? I’m new to all of this.... Any recommendations for a good lens? I have a 18-200mm, I like your set up though. Inside my view finder it seems to be very dirty, to the point I can’t focus then pictures properly, but yet when I look on the screen and take a picture it’s fine and not as dirty/blurry. Would you recommend compressed air to be used to clean the inside??
It's possible that a low battery might prevent the flash popping up, I'm not sure.
Make sure you are in one of the PASM modes, not Auto or a Scene mode, and not Live View. Then slide the flash switch. If it doesn't pop up or at least click then there's probably a different fault.
If your viewfinder is blurry have you checked the Diopter adjustment? If it's dirty, then there are various places the dirt might be - on the mirror, or the prism, or in the viewfinder itself.
It's better to use a rocket blower to blow the dust off, rather than a can of compressed air because they sometimes expel propellant which can leave marks on the surface.
jammin023 it doesn’t even chick when i press the button, but yet when I open it manual it does adjust and you see the little clip move with it when I manually mess with the flash. So I hoping the battery plays a part, in addition to the view finder being blurry. Because the regular screen seems to be fine when I took a photo.
I just unlocked my d50 thanks to this :D
thanks worked for my d7100
Thanks a lot for this! I was starting to get worried and your advice worked perfectly. Cheers!
It worked like wonder. Thank you
WELL , THANK YOU! IT WAS REALLY USEFULL!
You don't have fingernails to open the flash on the Nickon
Using fingernails or any other leverage to force the flash to open when it's jammed is not a good idea. Even if it works, you might damage it. My method does not use force, just a gentle squeeze.
thanks from Mexico!!!
Thank youuuuuuu from my d5200
Not really a fix though if the problem still exists.
After you've got it to pop up once, it usually continues to do so. And if it ever gets stuck again, you know what to do.
Thanks for this I was so frustrated trying to figure this out
Skip to 2:19 for the fix.
Thanks!!
Thank you sir
thank you sooooooo much :)
Thanks a lot...
Thanks a lot! 👍
VERY helpful! Thanks so much. Mine just got jammed today for the first time (had it about 6 months myself) :)
♡♡♡♡♡♡
Thanks. I bought a used one. I amike u and shoot on low light but once in a while i nred a flash. It was even sticking in auto but this seemed to have fixed it.. tks
I used to have the exact same problem. After pulling it up like you did, try cleaning the little metal hinges on the sides of the flash with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. My d750's flash hasn't popped up in years, but after using your tip and then wiping the hinges throughly it opens like new again.
