I have a launch PS4 that still puts in the work, but my friend bought one of these revision units for his brother back in the day. It has since gone on to my brother, as his slim unit suffered from hardware failure around last Sept. during one of the system updates. So I'd say this is still a good one to buy today, unless you're looking at the Pro revision. Mine is a keeper, since it's a limited edition and also, having been imported from Europe, it allows me to watch Region B blu-ray movies.
Thanks for doing a deconstruct of this PS4. This model I use mainly as a BD/DVD player in the bedroom. For games I use the PS5. On PS4 I like the winter theme with the ski-lifts and also the World of FF train theme.
I have this model! It’s the last original PS4 model that released before the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim. I always try and go for the last model number produced for any original console design because they’re usually revised and fix any issues the launch models or models released after launch have.
I got the Arkham Knight version, and I think it was a model just before this one since it has the capacitive buttons. Still plays like a charm and has no glossy plastic.
The DS4 is my favourite controller to use on PC currently. I bought one recently and it basically sinks into my hands. It also has better build quality than any other controller I've used.
Which one, the version 1 or version 2? I know they made bigger controllers for the later PS4 models, my friend had problems using my old PS4's controllers but when he bought his own PS4 the DS4 had a larger grip
I remember my friend getting this PS4 and I really loved the physical buttons it had vs the touch buttons on my launch PS4. I hated how those touch buttons would turn on the PS4 even after unplugging it (the capacitors took a while to run out of power) and then it would corrupt my hard drive.

I have played with a lot different controllers and the DS4 controller is still the best one… ever. It has pretty much perfected the design of game controllers out there.
PLEASE raise the gain on your mic! this and every newswave that I've seen is consistently quieter than other creators and when listening on a phone, there's only so much I can raise the volume on my side!
I have this model and didn't know for the longest time it wasn't the standard model. I always hated that glossy plastic and was glad this is the one I ended up with.
I'm still using a original bundle model that came with uncharted 1,2,3 That's the same model I have CUH 1215A. I haven't had any problems with it yet so far. I use a external Seagate Game Drive for PS4 with it for most of my games that are downloaded or physical 2017 model drive.
Dualshock 4 is hands down my favorite controller of all time with the 360 controller being my 2nd favorite. I like to actually grip my controller rather than just cradle, or lightly grasp them, and every other controller since has felt WAY too slippery. I have huge hands, from heel of my palm to the tip of my middle fingers are ~8 and 3/4 inches long, so not small at all.
Thats the one i had. Didnt even know a "normal" one was half shiny. Also remember it had awful wi fi problems. Literally kept disconnecting all the time so i just sold it off. Collected dust anyways.
I traded in my launch PS4 for this version as my launch version would constantly and randomly kick out discs that I thought was due to faulty touch buttons. Being able to get rid of the glossy top panel was icing on the cake. It's been running perfectly since!
I had this PS4 for a very short time, the 1215A model. I got it used but man was it the BEST condition I could ever get from a used one. The guy didn't even unpack the mic that came with the console. Zero scratches on the console and the controller. I didn't experience those extremely loud fans, it was working well for me. I had to sell it a couple years later to build a PC. At first I regretted my decision but later I found out that the free PS Plus glitch I used to do was patched :)
I have this one and am still using it. Yet to upgrade to the PS5. All my friends with the original model have complained about fan issues but this one has never had problems for me.
This is the ps4 I use, it’s great! I have an external HDD and it works flawlessly. Highly recommend holding off on next gen when previous gen works just fine the the casual gamer
Thanks for the refresher video! I recalled having to open my PS4 to clean up the dust from the fans. I think I purchased my model from GameStop in 2014, they were offering trade-in discounts and traded a PS3 Slim just to save off $100.
I got this specific model for my 16th birthday back in 2015 and I LOVED the design and how dead quiet it was compared to the later Slim and Pro models. Sadly it got stolen in '19 or '20 and I miss it every day, because of the fun times I had playing Dying Light, COD, and many other great games from that time.
Yeah, good point, this one is in fact quieter than both the Slim and the Pro revisions. I re-pasted both of those for my friend and was surprised that they're both louder than this earlier version PS4.
@@konstantine_c I had both the Slim and the Pro and the Slim was definitely quieter than the Pro, but the Pro sounded like it was taking off from the airport before I finally snagged a PS5. I have a hard time taking Sony consoles apart, but I did manage to re-paste an OG PS4 for a buddy of mine and it was a nightmare.
I have a 1 TB variant of this model and still use it regularly (CUH-1208B), it had came as an unofficial bundle with God of War 3 Remastered and Infamous: Second Son discs for free (a special festive bundle on the occasion of Diwali 2015 in India).
The Dual Sense is a bit too big for me. The Dual Shock 4 is a much better fit for me. I still use one over a Dual Sense whenever I’m playing a PS4 title
I have this one! I remember being told to specifically choose it over the 1tb models at the time (late 2015) because this one was more energy efficient, and I ended up replacing the hard drive with an ssd later on. I've since moved to a PS5, but I still have this model in storage, waiting to be used again
my friend had one, I remember it catching me off guard cause the controller was also all matte instead of glossy. They also did a slight PSVR1 revision around this time
PS4 was such a GOATed console, I played mine for a decade until just two weeks ago when i bought the Spiderman 2 PS5 Slim while it was on sale. And i wouldnt even have done so if the games i want this year werent all gonna be PS5/Series S/X exclusives, those being Stellar Blade, Dragonball Sparking Zero, and Treyarch's Call of Duty.
I loved the DS4 because I never needed to buy a new one. I either bought them for under $20 or they were given to me because they were broken. At one time I had no less than a dozen of them. It was always either broken triggers or the USB port.
DS4 had much better build quality. I went through 3 in 10 years. I’ve gone through 5 dualsenses already. It’s so bad that I get a GameStop warranty on it and switch it out yearly since that’s when the drift usually kicks in
Love my PS4 Pro. As for ranking the pads - DualShock 3 is my favourite. Pressure-sesitive buttons for full PS2 compatibility, and immense battery life. My 15+ year old DualShock 3 pads still go longer between charges than my far newer DualShock 4 pads. DualShock 4 was great though. My main gripe was the battery life.
DS4 is still better for rhythm game and fast tap game like Hatsune Miku Project Diva tried playing the game using Dualsense, the face button have an extra delay going up after being pressed
@@MinecraftianFlutterguy ngl I felt the same yeah in that transition, but dualsense is definitely WAY more comfortable than 4 imo but really I do like the design for each one overall 😎
I got this model ps4 for christmas when bloodbourne came out. It was a last gift from my grandfather. Now the ps5 is the main place where I play playstation games. So i movied this ps4 into the living room and i use the ps5 remote play feature to play my ps5 on the ps4.
I saw this model exactly one time: my buddy had it in high school and my friends and I came over and pulled an all-nighter playing co-op Diablo III together. We’d bought like $100 worth of groceries and snacks for the occasion. We had a blast. We found out a week later that the PlayStation was on loan from a pawn shop and that our friend had returned it, effectively ruining all of our efforts from that night. We were livid with him lol
I haven’t used a PlayStation since the 2. My Brother recently purchased a PS5 and gifted me his old PS4 with about 20 games, mostly Exclusives. I’m having a blast! ❤
This is the 1st PS4 I owned. The DS4 has always been my favorite controller. The PS5s dual sense is great but the DS4 just feels better to hold. It's the main controller I use on PC.
This is the one I had. I walked into a best buy during black friday 2015 at 9am, no other customers in the store but me, grabbed this as part of the uncharted collection bundle. Still to this day the most seamless black friday shopping experience I've ever had.
Got my very first PS4 original model CUH-1216b for only PhP 2,500($43) this week. It was being sold as "for repair" without any accessories like power cable or hdmi cable or a ds4 controller. It still works had a display, able to connect a ds4 controller, change the hard drive to 1tb (one attached to it already not working). But the fan is not working, the metal plates that is on the power supply is rusted the one that was attached on the bottom panel rusted too, dust where everywhere and the rubber on the roller on the disk drive got grinded like a dust. Don't know if the disk drive still works I don't have any physical games available in my hands to test it so I'll figure it out later. Good thing it on version 10.01 so I got it jb and able to play nicely.
That's the PS4 I have and it was bundled with the Uncharted Trilogy I got it $100 off on Black Friday in 2015. Console bundle was $299.99. Man those were the days...
That's the model i bought back in 2015 and still have to the date and have never given me any problem. I have never open it to clean it out or replace the thermo paste. The last ti.e i used it was last month to migrate the data to my ps5 slim. Tha k you for your service old ps4!!
This was the model I ended up getting and I had no idea the OG model had touch sensors for thr power and eject buttons I just assumed they swapped out the glossy panel
I have the CUH-1216B 1TB model. Got it just before the Slim launched and the stores were clearing out these fat models. £150/180 for the 500GB/1TB. Was using it for VR and 3D Blu Rays until the audio jack on my PSVR stopped working. Now keeping it next to my PC ready for the homebrew scene to blowup.
This is the exact model ps4 I got in late 2015 bundled with a physical copy of the Uncharted Collection. It's been a great system, I still use it quite often.
My base PS4 is still the launch day version. I remember having to remove the rubber foot on the front underneath the eject button because that rubber foot was triggering the touch eject button.
Happy Easter, everyone. yah I have the 60 GB ps3 version with the backwards compatibility and 5 months later I put in a 500 GB and it was quite expensive back then somewhere close to $600 I plus taxe
The good ol' "C-Chassis" PS4. I got this in Summer, 2016, bundled with Uncharted 4 and had it since the revision of the Pro came out. God, i miss that console, so many games, so much memories.
This was the ps4 I bought in preparation for black ops 3, it came bundled with the last of us. Never had any issues with it and while everyone and their mother reported the jet engine issues, I never experienced it. Still have it to this day and I’ll never sell. Thinking about doing an ssd swap for it for more storage and faster loading speeds.
This is the one I have. I actually won it in a raffle at work - it came with Nathan Drake Collection. It's still in use in my bedroom while the PS5 has taken over the living room. I never bothered with a Pro. Gave it a refresh with a cleaning and new thermal paste right before Horizon Forbidden West launched and it's run like a champ ever since.
Great video, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say I love the glossy plastic cover on the PS4 and touch sensitive power and eject buttons (even though I constantly power it up accidentally when cleaning it🤣🤣 ). It reminds me of my original 60gb PS3 with all its gloss and chrome :)
Yup, this is the model I own as I bought the Star Wars Battlefront 2 (I honestly wanted the Uncharted Trilogy bundle but it was out of stock) in very late December of 2015. Honestly, I didn't even know it was a refreshed model. I still occasionally use it today as, outside of faster load screens, there hasn't been enough financial incentive to drop $500+tax for the very few PS5 exclusives that I have an interest in.
I actually have this one and use it all the time, didn't even know it was special like this lol And yeah the controller gets STUPID greasy on ps4 wish you could keep it clean
1:44 I've never actually used a DualShock 4, but I held one in a store once and was surprised at how small it felt. The DualSense feels way better in my hands. 2:20 We've unfortunately gone back to glossy plastic with the upper portion of the PS5 Slim. I'm still using a original bundle model that came with uncharted 1,2,3 That's the same model I have CUH 1215A. I haven't had any problems with it yet so far. I use a external Seagate Game Drive for PS4 with it for most of my games that are downloaded or physical 2017 model drive.
Same here i had the 60 GB
I know that ps4 sounds like a jet engine
Same. The Nathan Drake Collection. Still have it. I upgraded from 500gb to 2tb, with a 2tb external.

I got this model for Christmas in 2015, it was a Star Wars Battlefront bundle and came with a year of PS+
Yeah i didn't have those kind of problems but the wifi speeds were shit on that model
PS4 is alive and well. They are still games coming out for it.
unfortunately
@@mcsnuggie PS5 flopped due to scalpers, PS4 still good standards even for today's landscape
That's my PS4, never realized that mine was different from the original release and I still love it.
I’m barely getting ready to upgrade from this ps4 I got it on launch week. Loved it.
Bought this back in December, 2015 and never knew it was any different from the original PS4 at release
my friend had one, I remember it catching me off guard cause the controller was also all matte instead of glossy. They also did a slight PSVR1 revision around this time
That’s my model. So far it’s working great.
PS4 was such a GOATed console, I played mine for a decade until just two weeks ago when i bought the Spiderman 2 PS5 Slim while it was on sale. And i wouldnt even have done so if the games i want this year werent all gonna be PS5/Series S/X exclusives, those being Stellar Blade, Dragonball Sparking Zero, and Treyarch's Call of Duty.
i have this one, i just call it "the original but cleaner"
I loved the DS4 because I never needed to buy a new one. I either bought them for under $20 or they were given to me because they were broken. At one time I had no less than a dozen of them. It was always either broken triggers or the USB port.
DS4 had much better build quality. I went through 3 in 10 years. I’ve gone through 5 dualsenses already. It’s so bad that I get a GameStop warranty on it and switch it out yearly since that’s when the drift usually kicks in
@@Cruxis_Angel Damn if the DS4 is better than the Dualsense I'm glad I don't own one.
@@Cruxis_Angel how I have the exact opposite experience I went through ds4 like candy
@@Cruxis_Angelds4 would get stick drift for me in the first 2-3 months every single time idk why but it was some shit
The DS4 feels like a toy when I use it now, and feels way lighter and more like it’s about to break when compared to the PS5 controller.
DS4 is still better for rhythm game and fast tap game like Hatsune Miku Project Diva
tried playing the game using Dualsense, the face button have an extra
delay going up after being pressed
To me I feel like when coming from the ps3 controller is was literally perfect. In terms of comfort I actually like it better than the duel sense
@@MinecraftianFlutterguy ngl I felt the same yeah in that transition, but dualsense is definitely WAY more comfortable than 4 imo but really I do like the design for each one overall 😎
Wait till you get used to a competing brands controller and hold a PS2 or PS3 controller.
I just prefer the name Dualshock due to Nostalgia reasons
I have this and its the best Ps4 fat model revision, It never ran like a jet, just keep it clean
I'm glad everyone can agree the buttons are better in every way
I haven’t used a PlayStation since the 2. My Brother recently purchased a PS5 and gifted me his old PS4 with about 20 games, mostly Exclusives. I’m having a blast! ❤
I have installed a SSD on my PS4 works charms like on the One X. Even the Menu is scrolling more smoothly and loading times are lowered considerably.
Yeah fr even with the sata 2 limitation i still think its worth it it makes everything so much faster
I still have my physical button, Playstation 4 500gb to this day, and I also still have my Playstation 3 to this day as well.
I remember seeing these being bundled with Call of Duty Black Ops III, my brother and I got one from GameStop Christmas 2015 of that year.
This was the model I ended up getting and I had no idea the OG model had touch sensors for thr power and eject buttons I just assumed they swapped out the glossy panel
a ssd is a big boost for the ps4
After coming over from today's video, my biggest takeaway here is that you need to put on more sunscreen during the summer my guy
Back in the day, Sony said you could use this as a space heater for the winter John 😂
I actually used to have this PS4, it came bundles from Best Buy with Black Ops 3. She was a faithful pedal 💪
This is the exact model ps4 I got in late 2015 bundled with a physical copy of the Uncharted Collection. It's been a great system, I still use it quite often.
I was never remotely impressed by the original versions of the consoles. I absolutely adore my Star Wars special edition PS4 Pro.
Thanks for the hard work you put into these weekly videos.
Same to you 🐰 🎉
I didn't know the original model has the glossy section on top. I thought I had an original one but it looks like this one that was taken apart.
Bought a broken one off ebay two years ago and replaced the PSU, fan, cleaned it and added new thermal paste, all for less than $120.
Thinking about doing an ssd swap for it for more storage and faster loading speeds.
the ps4 i own and the only console i ever had. Still rocking on it and preparing for that elden ring dlc!
This is the ps4 I currently have and when I picked it up I thought it was same as launch ps4.
The ps4 v2 controller is probably my favourite playstation controller to date, fits perfectly in my hands, battery is decent and is fairly robust.
I actually have this one and use it all the time, didn't even know it was special like this lol
And yeah the controller gets STUPID greasy on ps4 wish you could keep it clean
I still use this ps4 as my homebrewed ps4 and it works like a champ 8 years and going.
My launch day console is still going strong
1:44 I've never actually used a DualShock 4, but I held one in a store once and was surprised at how small it felt. The DualSense feels way better in my hands.
2:20 We've unfortunately gone back to glossy plastic with the upper portion of the PS5 Slim. The matte finish on the entirety of the original PS5's plates looks way better.
Sony was like..."Listen CUH...you aint welcome here no mores.." 😂😅😂
This is the one I got / still have!
