"Jinrei has done everything right and all it brought him was pain, but he still continued to do everything right." That quote can apply to most people you'll meet in real life, just saying.
Maybe this just me, but I felt that Jin being the one to kill Jinpachi was of no benefit to his character, there was no emotional stake or interesting conversation between these two characters, as opposed to Kazuya, who his ending would've been a benefit to his character in T6 and T7.
It's true. I do love single, hard-hitting quotes that define a game. Wang got one. But they were going for something subdued with Jin. In the end, they went for "Show, Don't Tell." The fact that Jin's ending is so mundane and shallow adds a lot to how tragic it is in a grander scheme when you take into account the larger sampling of endings.
@@GizouGitai Jin's ending was kind of an homage to Kazuyas creepy smile ending from Tekken one. The thing he did before turning evil in T2. They walked a fine line with T6 story to make Jin an interesting, conflicted character. But in my opinion, they failed. The writers didn't plan it well enough.
Imagine if Tekken 5's canonical ending went like this: Jin fights Jinpachi and loses, succumbing to the Devil Gene. He still loses, a la Asuka's story, but him succumbing is the most important part. Jinrei then enters and stops Jinpachi from absorbing Jin's power like he does to Jinpachi in his ending. Jinrei kills Jinpachi and leaves as Asuka enters. Asuka reverts Jin to his human form, but his internal succumbing hasn't been undone fully, leaving him to continue his descent into Tekken 6 while Jinpachi gets to die in the arms of his friend instead of unloved and forgotten by the world. Jin is assumed to have won the tournament, as Asuka only saw him and she's the only witness, hence Jin getting the Zaibatsu as a tool to assist his descent.
That'd be an ending that would fill my heart with joy, and I'd hope a potential Tekken Bloodlines for 5's story would go that direction. Include the strongest story beats, so you could work forward with the most important character development/moments. But, taken as it comes, this is a series of games where we just can't have nice things. Ever. I kinda like that morbidity, in a masochistic way. Nothing hurts more than seeing what could have been.
I always felt that T5 was when the series started going downhill, but I never realized just how depressing that fall from grace really was. I felt that the weird return of dead characters, simplification of stages and the beginnings of the focus on juggles always showed that the series was starting to over-focus on gameplay, but I never realized how much better Wang's involvement was than other characters and mistook Jin's ending to be interesting foreshadowing and a change-up rather than a blatant walk-back of his triumph in T4. For every King-Marduk, there seems to be a degraded Yoshimitsu; when characters like Lei and Wang show a new side to the Mishima Saga, we also get Xiaoyu losing her mind and Asuka being a little all-over-the-place in her own debut; the opening video kicks ass, but kicks T4 to the curb at the same time. I understand wanting to keep the focus on Jin, but maybe it would have been more interesting if he interacted with the characters who knew Jinpachi better and maybe use their histories to help see the flaw in his own plan rather than fall into corruption without noticing it; the hero falling from grace is an interesting concept, but it seems ill-timed with T4's ending and means that a lot of character interactions and lore go to waste because a lot of it probably isn't canon (or at least made no difference in the end). I don't hate that Tekken focuses on the Mishimas (gotta focus the story somehow, right?), but I wish thinkers like you were in the writers' room to convince the staff that letting a few "outsiders" into the main plot could have been good, even if only for one game...Hopefully T7 is the absolute pit of despair and T8 (returning Jin to prominence and telling him he has to be a hero) can be the series climbing back up the cliff (and without further selling their soul for Devil wings along the way).

Your critique and praise of the whole series is wonderful and is the best on youtube and i am glad to see someone enjoy this series on the same level that i and some of us do
All I can say is f****** amazing. glad my whole frustration with the narrative of tekken & where it's going is put eloquently with your videos man. Good shit.
Tekken 4 was my first game in the franchise. I knew next to nothing about the first 3 entries. So to go from the rather intense and deep story telling of 4 to this whackier, "funnier", less concerned with depth narrative for nearly every character, it was utterly jarring. Paul's entire story in 4 was one of my favourites, and I was thoroughly drawn to Yoshimitsu for his design which initially lead me to believe that he was this evil demon character, only for me to be pleasantly surprised to see his ambitions for the world and his people showed him to be one of the most good characters of the game. To see that lost from then on, it dispelled my view for what this game series could've been pretty quickly.
We basically share the same experiences. I played tekken 4 at a local arcade once, and decided to give the series a shot. While the gameplay did get better (even if t4s wasn’t even that bad) the story was not it. In hindsight, perhaps I shouldn’t have played 4 first as I now realize it game me expectations the series ultimately couldn’t achieve.
The instant we get any happy ending in a Tekken game for the Mishimas, there will be no reason for a new installment to exist, so i feel like we will never get one.
Really fair point. Although, that is what T4 was, and T5 exists. You'd have to relapse the character back into their previous character arch (e.g. Majin Vegeta) or have a new protagonist.
I’ve watched all your tekken analysis videos from tekken 1 to 5 and it’s been over 2 hours now. You have amazing contents and I haven’t seen anyone analyse the story better than you did. Its very sad how the story changes after tekken 5. But at least 5 had a good balance between fantasy and reality. I can’t wait to see if tekken 6 analysis will happen. But I can already tell that it will go downhill from there and get even worse in tekken 7.
I always loved the story of Tekken back then, it was easy to digest not too complex but still had it's deeper meaning to it, I do hope Tekken 8 returns to form with the story telling.
Watching these videos has sparked my appreciation for Tekken again, a series I’ve played my whole life. You beautifully put into words how the individual games felt over time, great work.
These videos you put so much time in have convinced me that Tekken has the richest stories I’ve ever seen in fighting game history. I am curious on what else we can learn once you cover Tekken 6 & 7 (if you cover them that is).
Great analysis man! I never really thought about how badly Xiaoyu detaches herself from reality with her nonsensical plan. I can say for sure that this is the last time I really cared about Tekkens story.

all of your analysis videos are amazing. i've lowkey been a tekken fan ever since i was young, but the games nowadays don't have the novelty they used to have. i remember playing through story mode of all my favorite characters and was astonished by the ending movie sequence lmfao but it definitely seems like most fighting games crack down on gameplay and story is mostly an afterthought, and tekken is no exception. tekken 7's ending for many of the featured characters were a joke. it would be nice if they brought back story elements in later games but at this point I'm kinda doubting they will. anyways your videos are really cool and well thought out! they definitely deserve more attention for the work that you put into it. keep doing what you're doing!

I just watched your videos on Tekken 4 and 5 today as I had just went back to play them both this weekend and wanted to hear other's thoughts on them. You summed things up with these two games perfectly and I loved these videos. I saw one of the comments say you don't wanna be known as the Tekken story guy but I honestly hope you give your opinion on 6 and 7. I grew up with 3 and tag as those were the first ones I started with. 4 was my favorite game overall though. It was and is secretly lacking in a lot of departments I can honestly admit but the story telling was good and tight before getting a bit more wild in 5 and then going completely crazy in 6 and 7. This was all in all an awesome summary of both the gameplay and story telling. Thank you for this honestly.
You do such an amazing job of pointing out the downfalls of the game, without holding back any punches, yet being respectful and taking equal time praising it's accomplishments. Tekken 5 is my favorite game in the series in many ways, yet it's shortcomings and foreshadowing of the focus going forward is something I deeply dislike. I am happy to share this conflicted opinion on the game.
5:56 Just to reference another bad ending from one of my favourite RPG Maker horror games... Mistakes Repeated He, too, was lost to madness... I'll let you cultured folks guess where that came from (;
Glaring problem with Wang ending being canon is that it makes Jinpachi a pointless character - he exists solely to be killed by Wang. If T5 was to be thrown out, nothing would have changed. Kazuya defeating Jinpachi has emotional touch but his progression is just T2 from that point. Jin and Wang should have had an interlude together and I never understood why they didnt especially since they canonically fight each other. Jin and Jinpachi should have interlude where they adknowladge being family and lament current state of Mishima family and curse. Wang should have lost to Jin but be there for Jinpachi in his last moments.
I love Wang’s story in this game… which is why it brings me no joy knowing he falls into the trope of being an old pervert. In some of his intros with the adult female cast, he expresses a certain gleefulness that breaks through the fictional barriers themselves to make me feel rather uncomfortable. He just couldn’t have a different comedic quirk about him if he still had to have one, huh… Still, I do appreciate the indication that Wang loves Heihachi in an uncle-like way but ultimately cannot trust him after seemingly learning the truth about Kazuya and Jin. Also, it really does stink that Wang’s Prologue in TEKKEN 6 confirms he lost to Jin during the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 since it completely robs Wang the ability to see his old friend one last time (unless Jin fought Jinpachi with Wang watching?).
subscribed. I'm glad I found your channel. You have good humor with pretty thoughtful points. I have a question for you. Do you think wang's ending might have been a left over from Tekken 4 since the announcer says his name in a hidden audio file?
As far as I know, they flesh out the story very late, after arcade release, before console, using only basic ideas for Arcade Openings. But T4 was a very strange game, and Jinpachi Mishima was also found in the Announcer Voice files. Wang's ending wouldn't fit in with T4's themes though? I'll put that one under "Unlikely." But I'd kill to know what their intentions were originally.
I don't want to become just "The Tekken Story Guy." And the ending of this video genuinely hurt to put together. I already have an idea of what I have to say on T6, so it's a matter of time. I just need space.
Even though I agree with you about the story, I still understand why the developers tried to distance from Tekken 4. The gameplay mechanics were just not good, which is why they returned "back to normal". Isn't probably that good either, but after T4 flopped (it wasn't well received by critics, and fans back then) I can see why they wanted to return to the "status quo". Yes, T4 aesthetics and story were awesome - they made it fresh. But it really was the gameplay that drove them back, Which kinda sucks, because from that point on they didn't take the characters serious, and focused too much on few things. The story wasn't relevant to them anymore! The motive of the characters for fighting in the tournament became irrelevant. However, as many flaws it has, Tekken 5 is the superior game to T4. As underrated T4 might be, T2, 3 and 5 did a better job with the overall presentation (the gameplay is the most important aspect of course). The problem was not that they didn't retaine the style of T4 afterwards, but that Namco removed everything of T4 - even the aspects that were positive. And that since T5 thus the series started to feel repetitive! They hardly did any new fresh exciting things, always went the "safe route", while in the previous Tekken games the developers dared to go some risks for every new title. And as you perfectly said, Tekken 4 really felt like a start for a new exciting fighting game style for the 21st century - with T5 everything of that excitement was removed. That makes me feel sad, because a lot of potential got lost. T5 was very good - but it could have been an absolute masterpiece. Same for T6 and 7 (who just were disappointing).
I will have to disagree with your analyis on Jin in this game . While he definitely saw nothing good in himself , his motivations werent shallow. He didnt dismiss Hwoarang at all- he pateintly tried to explain that there are bigger things at present than rivalry brawl and later reasured Hwoarang that he will be back. His "he is waiting for me" also tells us that he was aware of Jinpachi wishing to die and wanting help
Okay so I know you don't wanna be just "the Tekken story" kind of guy but, it would be interesting if you could do something like "Fixing the Tekken story" basically. Would be kinda cool IMO to see your own take on the lore and how it could be written better, not just for the Mishimas but also for most of the other characters (The Williams sisters for example). Just wondering if it could be right up your alley
I'm happy you think I could. I do imagine "What ifs," but I don't know if it'd be OK as a video. In programming, most users report bugs in the forms of solutions. I try to avoid writing like that. For example, I'd love it if Paul kept his character development from 4. If I took your suggestion, I'd write on from that, and build Paul as a comicly simple man, but wiser and contented. I'd have him play a father-figure to a cheeky and rebellious Forest Law. I could write some fan-fiction, and it might even sound interesting. But, what I should be saying, is that more endings should be canonical so characters can develop alongside the players, rather than leave them as static and uninteresting archetypes, especially when they pass up opportunities for more interesting stories, or evolving the characters in a way that might inspire their movesets. It would already upset me if anyone who worked on T5 saw this video. I respect the creators a great deal. I'd find it presumptive, and arrogant to imagine I can make a game or write a story better than the developers, when I've already so harshly criticised their work here.
I am truly glad im not the only one thinks this way. Tekken had sadly fell from grace and people don't seem to see it, this is the reason why i had walk away from the franchise. The story and lore had became less and less compelling, 6 & 7 had HUGE potential to blow the other out of the water but they choose to gameplay and multiplayer over story. Sadly it wont get better this is why im not excited for Tekken 8 or any other game, maybe Smash bro because of Kazuya, Namco produced, I have lost faith in the Tekken director and team, now I wish they reboot the whole team and give someone who can make a great Tekken story but it will never happen unfortunately.
My dude great videos man you got my sub! Also I noticed how T7 is lacking in content compared to T4 and T5. For instance in T4 there is better atmosphere, story, offline content, music, etc, same with t5 along with customization. I hope and pray Tekken 8 gets the Tekken 4 treatment when it comes to story T4 gets way to much shit. As a Tekken vet I personally can't stand T7 the dumbing down of the system, stupid balance changes, bloated roster, trash new characters the story of the mishimas(Akuma really?), etc. So when I turn on my ps2 or my ps3 and play Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 DR I just enjoy the game so much more. Characters felt like real people you could understand like Paul, Law and even Kazuya. In the meantime before T8 comes out I'll be playing T4 and T5 but let me tell ya... if Tekken 8 has the combination of Tekken 4 story/writing, (Ya know like making Kazuya a hero or anti-hero with Juns return? Instead of the cheesy, flat villain that just wants to rule the world we got in t7.), Tekken 5 DR gameplay more movement, combo scaling so rounds won't end in 10 seconds, no rage, no rage arts(Making comebacks more hype instead of getting a hold your hand mechanic.), fewer guest characters more original characters(Like Leroy design for example just don't release them busted. Like guest characters that actually fit in Tekken with martial arts like Tifa Lockhart or Kiryu from Yakuza. The only DLC guest that fits in terms of fighting style and aesthetic is Geese Howard.), No over the top moves like Claudios B1 dumbing the system down instead each individual move having a particular purpose, Tekken 6 customzation, and Tekken force, Tekken Bowling(With Multiplayer this time Bandai!!!), the classic Tekken emulator from Tekken 5 but in T8 its Tekken 1, Tekken 2, Tekken 3, Tekken 4, Tag 1, Tekken 5 DR, and Tekken 5, Tekken 4 stages to feel like your in a real location for the sweaties make stages for them too since they bitched and moaned about the stages in Tekken 4 and so much more to be honest I feel like if it wasn't for all the necessary hate pro players threw at Tekken 4, Tekken 7 would be a much better state then it is now. But in the meantime I'll be playing enjoying Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 DR while the online players complain about buffs and nerfs and complain that online mode is boring wheres the offline content. I guess I'm old school I don't know then again I do like King of Fighters and Virtua Fighter...
last tekken i played it had its moments i knew it was the best mechanically not as cool as 4 but almost .. masterpiece.. no regrets ending it at 5 and now comfirmed that the characters were butchered in later installement

Still, I do appreciate the indication that Wang loves Heihachi in an uncle-like way but ultimately cannot trust him after seemingly learning the truth about Kazuya and Jin. Also, it really does stink that Wang’s Prologue in TEKKEN 6 confirms he lost to Jin during the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 since it completely robs Wang the ability to see his old friend one last time (unless Jin fought Jinpachi with Wang watching?).
Love tekken 5, but I'll go with Tekken 4 who dared to do something different instead of going with the full anime route that started in Tekken 5.
Whats the song at 5:26? Never mind i found it in the comments its dancing fate from t5dr
I am still waiting for that tekken 6 video 🌚
I hope you continue on to 6 and 7
Tekken 6 analysis, when?
I don't want to become just "The Tekken Story Guy." And the ending of this video genuinely hurt to put together.
I already have an idea of what I have to say on T6, so it's a matter of time. I just need space.
Also, uh, last year or something lmao
Even though
I agree with you about the story, I still understand why the developers tried to distance from Tekken 4.
He did cover input previous video how tekken 4 wasn't received nearly as negatively when it first came out compared to then.
WAAAAAAW JUST WAAAAAAAW!!!
What's the song playing from 5:20?
I'm suprised hwoarang didn't get a mention.
His character is more 2D than his fighting style.
@@GizouGitai xiayou isn't much better.
T4 is story peak though
Moral of the story. Tekken 6 and 7 ruined the story and leaves almost zero room for improvement.
Tekken 4 has a better visual aesthetic compared to tekken 5
the only thing tekken 5 has over tekken 4 is the amount of characters.....
gameplay as well.
Jinrei is Wu Wei
This game peaked the series
last tekken i played it had its moments i knew it was the best mechanically not as cool as 4 but almost .. masterpiece.. no regrets ending it at 5 and now comfirmed that the characters were butchered in later installement
Great vid mate!
