I picked up an 1890, New Orleans mint, Morgan dollar yesterday. It’s not in the best shape, but it’s just cool to me. I know some people collect to eventually sell, but I still love having moments where I take my silver out and just look at it and be proud of what I have.
That’s awesome. If you enjoy it, buy what you can afford and have fun. I like to imagine what heavily circulated Morgan’s could’ve seen? How much bourbon was bought in a saloon or was it part of a horse trade? Could Jesse James or an outlaw had it in his pocket? How about Wyatt Earp? That was such a historically rich time period, the possibilities are endless.
My mother won $80 on a slot machine pull in Las Vegas in 1960. My brother would clear out the kitchen cupboard and pull a drawer out. Then he put a cardboard tube through the hole and we lined up to play slot machine. I’m 70 now and can remember the great fun we had. Eventually, a cleaning lady stole them. But fond memories endure.
My grandfather passed away last week at 89. We just discovered he had a small collection of old coins and bills, some he may have gotten from his parents. Among them an 1896 Morgan Dollar. There’s obviously tarnish on it but it’s beautiful.
Don't let George Morgan's "Assistant" in his title fool you. He had a huge reputation in Britain at that point. We called him over here to make a proper silver dollar design and he said sure, I can do that. He couldn't just step off the boat and take over the Mint. He wasn't the highest manager obviously but he was essential and irreplaceable to the Morgan's creation. Not the most valuable US coin by a long shot, but I think it's one of the most beautiful coins of all time anywhere in the world. It's super popular with collectors and a true American classic!
I love Morgan's they're awesome I also like having the circulated ones they are the silver that actually get to hold in hand stack it play with it I love it
My son (8) told me he wanted to start a collection today and we decided on silver dollars. I bought him a 1893 o. Only $35 bucks. It’s so pretty. I wish it could talk!
Another excellent video. Thanks! The Morgan is a beautiful coin for sure. I don't really collect them, but I have a NGC graded AU58 common date with good eye appeal just because I wanted a nice example to look at. Same for the Peace dollar. As far as stacking them for their silver value, I think that it makes more sense, if you want to stack constitutional ("junk") silver to stick with halves, quarters, and dimes. The Morgans just have too high a premium. That is unless you can get them for a great deal. A quick check of JM Bullion as I type this reveals that I can purchase a roll of twenty 1921 Morgans in VG+ condition for $396. On the other hand, I could purchase a roll of twenty generic (buffalo, sunshine, or whatever) silver rounds for $345 (free shipping on either order). The roll of Morgans will contain 15.5 troy oz of silver, while the roll of rounds will contain 20 oz.
Morgan Silver Dollars is the coins of the Old West! They are the cheapest old coins that you can buy! They are still as popular today as they were back then! BU Morgan's as cheap as 50 dollars! Good video Silver Dragons! I enjoyed seeing this!
Morgan 1881S: my grandmother gave me one in about 1960. It is dark/tarnished as I'm sure it was used in commerce and wound up in her purse and eventually was saved and offered to me among a handful of similar coins. It was the oldest one, so I chose it. Coins can encourage kids to do research. I discovered that 1881 was the year Billy the Kid was shot/killed (or so the story goes), not far from where I lived almost 80 years later in southern New Mexico. I still have the coin. I'll have to write up something about it in the event I can pass it along to my grand nieces 😊
Oh, last month I bought some Morgans, pretty much cull, their choice, from Apmex, and they were... okay, I guess. The price was low, and I just want them for barter in the future as they will be recognizable. Oh, and delivery speed was super fast as Apmex is in Oklahoma City, one time zone downhill from me. YMMV. (also, my LCS is better 😉
Watching this AFTER buying junk Morgan's from coin shop. Spot is about 21 and i paid 25 each. So 4 over spot New to all this. Wish i watched this BEFORE The coins look awesome and i couldn't leave the shop empty hand
Yeah right now my local coin shop don't have any Eagles or 1 oz silver bars or coins but they do have Morgan's I love them for the history and because it's more silver in my bank! I actually carry a 1885 morgan in my pocket everyday
I love Morgans, my LCS sells cull for $15, Peace Dollars too. I was thinking about starting a Dansco album but I know it would never get completely finished, I did just pick up my first 2 that were minted in Carson City a couple weeks ago tho.
$15 cull would be a dream here in 2022. I grabbed a bunch last year for around $24 and actually started the Dansco album with the idea of upgrading any culls that are too slick. I have gathered 74 unique ones but still have many pricey ones left to add. It’s a passion project that will take some time and I’m hoping to do some trades to keep the final costs down. 1893-S may never make it in the album. 😂
I knew a guy at work who bought silver. I would kid him that I liked silver dollars because if the price of silver crashed, they would still be worth a dollar!
Holy smokes. A Pre C0 vid video few days before lockdown. That spot price is wild to hear. Thanks for your information. Fun to see where your channel is now. Congrats
I do love me some Morgans and Peace dollars. Premiums are what gets me. Decision has been made that I will do a monster box of them 250 each. Wishful goal but doable over the next few years. Love the videos!!!
Its amazing how much silver prices have gone up in a year. And the premiums are crazy. Now I'm all for silver going up in value but it is just going up to fast and making it harder to buy what you want. I wish that it would just slow down. That's just my opinion.
Spot price=$18.38 Cull Morgan=$22.49 At the moment these are the prices at Apmex. I was looking for something to add for the free shipping. I dont collect morgans or peace dollars so I went on a search for the value of these. Thanks for this video.

What is your take on Morgans now? They seem very over priced to me. The average cull price is over $30. Silver is about $20 an ounce so the premium on culls is about 100%.

A early 1900’s gold $2.5 dollar face value Liberty is starting about $350. 2 common Morgan’s would cost you about $60. Has gold outpaced silver that strongly in the last 100 years to screw up the face value vs melt value?

Nice overview of the Morgan dollar 👍 you’re probably in the ballpark with MS60 on your 1881. A bit of a scratch on the right side that might be a detractor. You got a nice deal.
Good video however I must make a correction to what you said about the portrait of Liberty. In your format you said that portrait was the same as the Statue of Liberty, however that statue was not even completed and given to the US government until 1886. The portrait on the Morgan Dollar was from an actual model that's mr. Morgan hired for posing. She was a school teacher and these first portraitures were done around the year 1877 so as you see they could not be the same portrait as on the Statue of Liberty. FYI 😊

Ok so I love the design but I want some opinions..these are only 77% silver I believe and I can buy Morgan designs that are 100% silver and even tho they are not old I like the fact I can pay less and get more silver as a stacker...what do y’all think..
I have a question how does the price rise on key dates and cc morgans is it like every year the price goes up im not talking about the silver but the price from being rare how fast does that go up? the average morgan is about the same price as silver if silver was worthless it be like 4 to 10$ for one of them but a key date or cc is way up there so how long for a good rise in the price and would you say collecting key dates and cc coins is a better idea i mean if silver goes way up does that effect the rare price too say a cc coin costs exactly 1000 and silver goes up 40$ more would that be 1040? vs say 5 or 50 years go by and silver stays pretty much the same but the price does go up over time once upon a time they were 1 dollar i just want to know how fast does the rare price go up how long and how much? sorry i know thats kinda long

Dates before 1900 but one is 1900 and most are "O" and one "S" a few are dented but see no damage to the face or reverse, any explanation?
Thank you 😊
I just bought first three . P c g s 50 bucks for ms 63 1890 o . Got 1890 p and a 1898
Should I clean my Morgans or keep them as is?
Ok so I love the design but I want some opinions..these are only 77% silver I believe and I can buy Morgan designs that are 100% silver and even tho they are not old I like the fact I can pay less and get more silver as a stacker...what do y’all think..
I know this is an old comment but yeah, if you're a stacker go with the oz. If you're a collector you go with the Morgan or Peace dollar.
They're 90% silver.
Dear God I wish they were still $13...I'm still stacking them though...Today's price $24...Wow!
I have a question how does the price rise on key dates and cc morgans is it like every year the price goes up im not talking about the silver but the price from being rare how fast does that go up? the average morgan is about the same price as silver if silver was worthless it be like 4 to 10$ for one of them but a key date or cc is way up there so how long for a good rise in the price and would you say collecting key dates and cc coins is a better idea i mean if silver goes way up does that effect the rare price too say a cc coin costs exactly 1000 and silver goes up 40$ more would that be 1040? vs say 5 or 50 years go by and silver stays pretty much the same but the price does go up over time once upon a time they were 1 dollar i just want to know how fast does the rare price go up how long and how much? sorry i know thats kinda long
I dont know when this was posted, but right now in November 2020, silver is, i believe, right around $25.00.
