If you have a circulated Morgan or Peace dollar that you can hold in your hand, and know that it's authentic, you can hold it in your hand on a regular basis and get used to the weight of it. You'll be able to spot the light ones without any difficulty by simply picking them up and can thus dispense with using a scale. If it's the right weight or even heavier but is a fake, it will be considerably thicker than a real dollar. This is helpful if you're looking at a big lot of circulated dollars.
Last week I threw out three nickels from my late grandfather's collection I thought to be counterfeit. By using your techniques and looking at how poor certain areas were struck, it was easy to see that the buffalos on them were actually missing one of their front legs! To think he had them since the late thirties and never knew.
Thank you for a very helpful presentation. It's so easy, especially, to weigh a Morgan you've bought in order to weed out fakes. He also addresses other ways to tell -- the sates for instance.
Great video. Another thing I noticed on the fake were that the tips of the wings are considerably rounder than on the real coin. Also there’s something weird about the woman’s ear on the fake.
A great deal of data exists for every Morgan ever minted. Reed edge counts are different for many of the Morgans so if it supposed to have significant Numismatic value, then counting those reed edges and looking up the recorded data and comparing is a good move.
Thanks for the info. I have a 1901 Morgan Silver dollar from your description it appears real, Mint 0. Is a bit worn. Thanks what is the next step in selling?

Do you think a 1888 Morgan silver dollar that weighs 25.6 g Is real? I have one and was wondering if it's real it's pretty dirty but in some spots has a lot of detail
So my 1903s weighs 26.0 and it was circulated, not magnetic, so would this be a real one 🙃 I bought it in middle school from a kid for a dollar he wanted a hill and I liked coins so I traded. Just curious if the weight could seem right? Probably gonna get appraised and see but just was wondering your thoughts about the weight.
I don't know if it's just me but at the beginning of the video 0:57 where you show the 2 coins I noticed that the last "A" in America on the real one you can clearly see the bar across the A but you can't really see it on the fake. Maybe that's just me and my eyesight or just the way you held them both but all the way through I was trying to see if it was just me and to me it's consistent all the way through the video. If I'm right do you think that could be another way to spot a fake?
What about the magnet test? And the Ping test? There are now a couple of apps for testing various precious metals by the Ping sound. And if you put the coin in a thin plastic sleeve and let a powerful tiny magnet slide down it on a 45° angle….the magnet should slow going over a real Morgan.
Hi I’ve got a silver Morgan dollar 1896 it looks quite worn down The weight is 25.70 g it’s also has a O above the dollar word trying to figure out if it’s real or not. Plz
Hello, there is also such a product with which you can test your silver. You scratch a metal piece with your coin and you put a drop of that liquid on it. If the morgan is false, the product turns brown, if the product remains red, it is silver. You know what I mean. And you know where I can buy that and what this is called. Regards,Ed
For a coin in a 2x2, that can be tricky. However, the best way is to learn to identify them visually. Not all fake silver dollars are obvious to the eye, but many examples can be easily spotted. Try searching for silver dollars on eBay and picking out ones that look fake (or even ones that are sold as copies). Figure out why they look fake, and keep those factors in your mental toolbox. An example is that some will have brass color showing through the silver plating. Otherwise, if you're looking at a coin that is for sale, perhaps in a coin shop or at a coin show, ask to see it outside of the 2x2. If it helps them sell it, it would be ridiculous not to do it. I hope this helps, let me know if there's anything I can clarify.
@@ModernMiner4 Thanks. I will do mor research on them. Most "this is a fake" videos are magnets and weight. But I will studies my butt off now in hopes to not get screwed! Again thanks.

I myself am worried also on ebay ..i zoomed in on a morgan several actually to verify authenticity well as much as i could it ended at 33.50 so i hope it checks out when i get it I'll have to buy a scale and use magnet test
Great video. I just bought the scale, similar to that in the video, after watching. After weighing a Morgan dollar, it checked out well. I then established its weight after sealing it in an airtite capsule. Question- would it be ok to use this weight (coin plus capsule) as a benchmark in weighing my other already-encapsulated Morgans, without having to remove them from their capsules (understanding the slight weight differences due to wear)? Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the video, very informative. Especially in determining the authenticity of a Morgan by its weight in grams. Had no idea there were so many real looking Morgan fakes being sold online.
I sent away for some Morgans. 28 of them. They were not numismatic as they said they were and were just loose in a small very thinly padded plastic bubble envelope. and now that I see this I am going to weigh and inspect them One is an 1895. Would you like to see some photos?
Yes it turns out that they are fakes. They weigh about 23.5 ounces each there fore fake. Real morgans weigh about 26.+ ounces. Now I would like to check the actual metal. How do I test if you please?
Thank you I avoided buying Morgan's because I don't know that much about them. I just recently bought 3 I ping tested them and they pinged real but I've got a 1897 S that looks kind of wonky.
Hi! You can weigh the coin, get a coin magnet and if the magnet sticks to the coin it is fake, put the coin on your finger and gently tap it with another coin & a real Morgan should have a nice high pitch ringing sound. Hope that helps.
Other things to look for on fake morgans....fading/weak LIBERTY in the headband, weak/thin M (designer mark) on bottom of morgan bust (right above the date)....
The fake one has some black points on it, I saw in another video that this also comes from pouring the coin instead of real minting. Is that a true red flag indicator?
It definitely could be. While a real dollar may have similar issues (you never know where it's been), black spots like that are not typical. Poured coins can often be identified by their grainy surface texture, and by random pinholes on the surface.
I purchased a Morgan Silver dollar off eBay recently, was described in "About Uncirculated," condition. However, it weighed 23 grams, which I couldn't believe. It was a fake, off eBay. I strongly suggest avoiding the site of uncertified Morgan dollars.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I heard you mention correspondence 👍is that allowed ❓ If so I would love to ask you a question. Thank you 😊 Wendy
I have one in good shape with barely any ware and weight 26.8 Grams now that's real correct? It almost looks like it sat in a drawer and wasn't used barely at all but I know it's real because I bought it from a well known Gold and Silver dealer called The Gold Father what do you think ?
Thank you so much for your wisdom and knowledge on these Morgan dollars!!!! I've started collecting them and I'm about halfway through on my first set..lol but thanks again for a very informative video!!!! Keep on stacking and keep On keepin On!!!
the whole time you were saying "this brown color" I was sitting here looking at your GREEN coin LOL. anyway, great info and tips for spotting fakes. On yours another thing I noticed the date looks more like 19 01 than 1901 the spacing of the numbers looks just off. And it sure does look cast rather than struck. If counterfeiters ever figure out how to cast a 27g planchet then using a hammer, anvil or vice to stamp out their fakes we're screwed lol.
I just went through a horrible experience today from a shop think my price was switched bc he took it and disappeared on me for like 10 mns and I'm not stupid all he had to do was use the xrf or whatever
@ Karen O’Neil Scales like the one shown in this video I’ve seen in tobacco shops (stores that sell cigarettes, pipes and other tobacco products) for less than $10 (without the recalibration weight). I ordered a AWS scale including a 500g calibration weight from Amazon for about $13-15. I’ve also seen them at gas stations/neighborhood stores. Hope you find one if you’re still looking. They come in handy when it comes to checking questionable coins. 😉
Tim you can get a free app called: Coin Facts. It shows pictures of coins, tells what they should weigh, how many were made, what some coins have sold for all kinds of stuff.
I have him recently found one apparently it's apparently it's 2nd mint 1921 21 I could really use your help on telling whether or not it's real could I send you photograph
I got a fake mixed in with a bunch of cull dollars. It had that brown or gray finish. Under glass it looked cast not struck. Then the acid test wouldn' t show red. My friend who has been in coin business for years passed on to me. He has no idea. I never did like the color on it. I finally got a acid tester and it doesn't test silver. weight on this one is a little heavy. Shows wear marks on breast but not wings. The the arrow heads that the eagle is holding are really messed up.
I enjoyed your video . I’ve had a 1799 silver dollar for years. My eyes are bad my friend did something with a magnet and said it wasn’t real. It’s still in my junk drawer. Could tell me I’d I could tell by that if it’s real!! It was my mom’s thank you Gloria shade
A Morgan dollar was discovered as genuine it was struck on aluminum. Unfortunately pcgs didn't list the coins weight but the aluminum Morgan should weigh less than silver.
The weight disparity is key, but imho the wear differences are only slight, and too vague to be determining factors. Also, the "weird graininess" doesn't come across in the video - may in person, but not in the video. The dates aren't "off" enough to be a sole determining factor, either. Imho, it all comes down to the weight. Would have been nice if you told us what metal the fakes are made out of? Can't be 90% Silver, or it wouldn't be profitable enough to justify the effort. Are they Nickel, Zinc, or ???
Their composition can vary. Some may be made of silver, many are made of brass or similar. I believe the one I showed in the video is brass. That's why it also won't stick to a magnet. I haven't seen it as much in old quarters or halves, but it's definitely something to watch out for, especially with older coins. The more valuable the coin, the more fakes there will be.
Some of the key date fakes are made out of silver, like the 1893S and the 1901 which are highly valuable even in high circulated grades. I've never seen one in person. I suppose 99% of the fakes are just made of base metals.
Hi I do have a lot of coins an old ones But I want to know couple of them if they are real and how much they worth. 1889 and 1900 How I can send you some pictures?
If you have a real Morgan dollar and others that are suspected fakes, the following may help. I had a good one (purchased 30+ years ago for $15) and three fakes (bought recently for $1 each). I mixed them up recently and could not figure out which was the real one. I wanted to weigh them but had no weighing machine. So, I put them one-at-a-time exactly at the end of a wooden ruler and then slid the ruler out over the edge of a book until the coin tipped the ruler down to my desk, noting the reading on the ruler's edge when that happened. The three fakes all tipped at one reading on the ruler's edge, the real one tipped much sooner because it was notably heavier. I found my real one!
Such a slow talker.

I heard you mention correspondence 👍is that allowed ❓
If so I would love to ask you a question.
Thank you 😊
Wendy
I have one in good shape with barely any ware and weight 26.8 Grams now that's real correct? It almost looks like it sat in a drawer and wasn't used barely at all but I know it's real because I bought it from a well known Gold and Silver dealer called The Gold Father what do you think ?
I'd say that's within the weight tolerance
@@ModernMiner4 Thank you so much for the video.
God Bless You And Family
Hey I got some 1882 dollar coins can you get me a price on how much they worth
Which scale do you recommend? That is something I haven't invested in yet.
Karen Oneil
There are many different brands you can find, but the one I use is American Weigh Scale (AWS). Mine graduates at 0.1 grams.
@@ModernMiner4 Would the magnet slide work with these?
Karen Oneil
Possibly. Some metals, such as copper, will react very similarly to silver, so it takes practice
@ Karen O’Neil
Scales like the one shown in this video I’ve seen in tobacco shops (stores that sell cigarettes, pipes and other tobacco products) for less than $10 (without the recalibration weight). I ordered a AWS scale including a 500g calibration weight from Amazon for about $13-15.
I’ve also seen them at gas stations/neighborhood stores. Hope you find one if you’re still looking. They come in handy when it comes to checking questionable coins. 😉
Thank you.👍
Did you buy the fake before you knew how to identify?
Que precio tiene la 1906
If a coin was made of 90% silver but was a rare year then how can you tell it was fake ??
Tim Holmes
The same factors in the video can apply. If it’s fake, the method of manufacture can give it away.
@@ModernMiner4 I have a free App on my phone : Coin Facts
It's very Interresting & can teach alot of cool facts.
Tim you can get a free app called:
Coin Facts. It shows pictures of coins, tells what they should weigh, how many were made, what some coins have sold for all kinds of stuff.
@@ModernMiner4 Hi ! Also if a coin sticks to a coin magnet it's fake.😙
I have him recently found one apparently it's apparently it's 2nd mint 1921 21 I could really use your help on telling whether or not it's real could I send you photograph
No mention of the ping test or magnet test. But good vid.
If a magnet sticks to it, it is not real.
I have one that my father had put away now I got to get a scale of wet
I see an (m ) stamp on her neck on some of my coin is that normal?
Could be a counterstamp. These are marks put on the coin sometime during circulation.
I've read that they're supposed to have the M..stands for Morgan of course
A Morgan dollar was discovered as genuine it was struck on aluminum. Unfortunately pcgs didn't list the coins weight but the aluminum Morgan should weigh less than silver.
Left side bow has m or w
The weight disparity is key, but imho the wear differences are only slight, and too vague to be determining factors. Also, the "weird graininess" doesn't come across in the video - may in person, but not in the video. The dates aren't "off" enough to be a sole determining factor, either. Imho, it all comes down to the weight. Would have been nice if you told us what metal the fakes are made out of? Can't be 90% Silver, or it wouldn't be profitable enough to justify the effort. Are they Nickel, Zinc, or ???
is the fake one is a silver also or its a copper??
This one is brass. The metals used for fakes does vary, and some can be silver.
Thank you..
Tengo una de Morgan dollar .1897 que valor tiene si me dicen.
Depende. Sugeriría compararlo con ejemplos en eBay.
What are the fake ones really made out of? Is this a problem in halves or quarters as well?
Their composition can vary. Some may be made of silver, many are made of brass or similar. I believe the one I showed in the video is brass. That's why it also won't stick to a magnet. I haven't seen it as much in old quarters or halves, but it's definitely something to watch out for, especially with older coins. The more valuable the coin, the more fakes there will be.
Some of the key date fakes are made out of silver, like the 1893S and the 1901 which are highly valuable even in high circulated grades. I've never seen one in person. I suppose 99% of the fakes are just made of base metals.
I have a 1921 Morgan dollar where can I take it to get weight
Buy a scale lol
go to the head shop/smoke shop not only can you get a scale you can get sum sweet rolling papers lol
26.72 mine
I ment it does not stick to a magnet
Hi
I do have a lot of coins an old ones
But I want to know couple of them if they are real and how much they worth.
1889 and 1900
How I can send you some pictures?
Value varies. I'd recommend comparing it to examples on eBay that have sold.
Seems like making a fake coin would cost to much
If you have a real Morgan dollar and others that are suspected fakes, the following may help.
