    Got 2 of those at a flea market. The lady I got them from wasn't sure they were real and my wife was the one that picked them up. Only paid $7.50 each so I thought it was worth the risk. I kept the other one for future reference. Thanks for all you do! It was neat to see the inside of the coin and for you to prove with better methods it was actually fake. Keep up the good work!

      I ended up with a fake, weighed right, size right, looked right, but ping test sounded dead, took it to a Jewlers to be gunned and it came up as zinc copper nickel 🧐 no silver to be found, managed to get money back and kept the Morgan as a good fake reference to remind myself to stay vigilant, happy stacking bro...

    Thank You so much I am now a follower as of today and soon to be a member. I have 2 Morgans I was given by accident about 53 years ago. I was buying a ding dong and some other candy and one of the Morgans was part of my change. I saw it was strange and not a silver dollar I had seen before (I was not a collector at that time) the owner asked for it back and would give me the correct coins. I said no and left, I found out later that day it was a keeper and became a coin collector that day :) I do not remember how I received the second one, however, I am sure it was a similar story. I loved those chocolate pasties.

    I'm glad you are running into these too. I bought a pile of fake peace dollars in Afghanistan in 2011. I noticed that they were leaking rust when my tent leaked during a rain storm. I put a magnet to them and they all stuck to the magnet. They were silver coated and good fakes. I kept 5 of the better looking ones to remind me of this lesson.

    Sheesh..now I’m gonna go thru ALL my Morgan’s now that as this vid made me somewhat paranoid. I remember back in 2013 there was a shop in Arcadia FL that had acquired 100s of these and the poor woman had been fleeced by someone who had been going door to door offering a great supposed deal on coins. After that incident she stopped offering any coins/bullion which obviously hurts the hobby. Nice video and I’ve been to that flea market u talked about with wagon wheel if FL.

    The magnet like that would be most effective with a sliding test. See how slowly the coin slides down.
    Just hearing the coins cling on the table is proof enough.

    • @isettech
      @isettech 4 года назад +1

      I hated at the beginning you could hear the first two coins as they were put on the table, but the fade muted the sound of the 3rd coin being placed on the table. The giveaway was the un natural tarnish pattern on the back. It screamed fake tarnish polish pattern.
      I made a plexiglass magnet drop chute with a small ski ramp at the bottom. Real silver falls slowly and lands in a cup. Fakes fall fast and leaps past the cup. Adjustment of the cup location sorts pennies too. It is a vertical drop with a 1/4 circle ramp off the bottom.

    There's another component to the magnet test in addition to seeing if it sticks to a magnet. While a silver coin will not stick to a magnet, it will react to it. If you move it along a strong magnet, it should encounter some resistance. It almost feels like it's swimming through the magnetic field. Nickel clad coins will not react similarly, nor will tin, or pewter, or tungsten, or many of the materials used in fake coins. Pure copper coins will though, so a silver plated copper coin will feel a lot like a solid silver coin.

    I thought at first glance it was 2 as many others did because it looked too good to be true. It was a nice coin. The weight is the best "tell" because it would be hard to duplicate. The close up comparison is good as well, but you would need a good one of your own to compare it too and a magnifier. However, you would also need some way to identify your good one as the dealer might accuse you of switching it with the fake.

    Very interesting and informative video. Nice to have some knowledge of how to differentiate real from fake. I know a good number of us can’t afford the high tech equipment used in the video, I know I can’t, but it’s a fantastic tool to have at your disposal. I have several fakes in my collection, since I could never own real ones, but I bought them as copies. In fact the word copy is stamped on the reverse. I was under the assumption that fakes had to have the word copy on them in order to be sold in the US. I will be testing coins in my collection to be sure, to some degree, that they are what they’re suppose to be. Great job on the video. Thanks.

  • @georgem7965
    @georgem7965 4 года назад +1

    Even before you started the analytic tests I guessed that it would be #3 because #1 had a fair amount of wear and a faker would not go to the trouble of producing a worn coin. Similarly, since 1921 is the commonest year for Morgan dollars it is unlikely that a faker would produce a fake for that year because even a genuine coin will be of only slight numismatic value above the silver content value. I was pleased that the tests proved my subjective evaluation.

    Great video on how to recognize fake silver dollars. The "ping test" is interesting, because back in the day, specifically in Mexico the Silver coin was bounced on a wooden bar and you could distinctly hear a loud ping. One knew then it was a real silver dollar whether it was Mexican coinage or US.

    I'm already a Subscriber and get all notifications. Coins & Stamps were an early childhood memory for me and 9 to 14 I went to as many shows as I could in the Baltimore metropolitan area. It was exciting that dealers like yourself would give a kid the time of day pre-Internet when it was your business. Like major league sports you have to keep building your base! I've seen videos of the Chinese using lines of stamping machines striking blank Morgan's and I think about so many people who are buying bullion coins as an investment and have only grading books to use as a resource. We were given a Spanish Reales and they live on the beach close to Miami, but it didn't look or feel right to me. My sister put it in a box just as a keepsake. The sticky dollar gave me the impression of being fake due to the high contact points and the brilliant silver shine. I know that the uneducated are taking the natural patina from coins thinking that shiny is better, but oxidation as you pointed out should be uniform, and if it's not it's a case to give one pause.

    One thing I like to do is to hold an AU Morgan in my hand at regular intervals (of course, checking its weight first against the average 26.73 grams). You can train your brain to know the correct weight without having to use a scale. This also works for Peace dollars, which have exactly the same weight and dimensions. Looking very closely at your known-genuine Morgan is also good. You'll be able to spot fakes without even knowing exactly what is wrong; you'll just know they aren't legit.

    I am not a coin collector, but somehow I guessed number 3. When you put them down on the table, it sounded different. It was too shinny for an old coin compared to the other 2. It seems like they tried to dirty it up to make it look older but failed. That Eagle beak is flawed and the wings are spread further out.

    The ping test is really just about the best non-destructive way to tell for those who don't have machine. I've seen fakes that have weighed correctly and had the right diameter (only being ever so slightly off in thickness). While they often fail the rare earth magnet slide test, they always fail the ping test. Of course, this only determines if it is silver and doesn't identify fakes made from silver... or alterations to legitimate Morgans to change them into a key date or mint mark.

    I knew it was #3 when you picked it up - very characteristic fake patina, and the wrong sound when you put it down. I saw a number of these for sale in a shop in Chinatown in San Francisco several years ago. Having seen the skill the counterfeiters have, I'm not surprised to see them floating around.

    3rd one has all the visual signs of a chemically applied as opposed to a natural patina, stands out like a sore thumb next to the others. 😂

    Thanks you!! I found a really good fake amount my collection by looking at the letters. The bottoms of letters like `L`, `B`, `E` and even `T` have a very slight wave. Weight was perfect. Diameter was good, thickness was a tad high, but not crazy. But looking at my entire collection, the letters on this 1878 8tf have waves.

    Good video, even now I know over confident individuals who think they are smart for getting a good deal for old walking half’s on eBay. I told them to watch out for fakes. He didn’t think there was enough incentive for them to counter fit them. Some don’t believe it till they see it.

    You can also do the slide test with a rare earth magnet test.

    Well done. You missed 2 things: On the fake coin, look at the "denticles"; the gear teeth around the perimeter on the obverse. That coin is minted off-center. The rim is noticeably thinner above and behind her head than it is next to her chin. Second, as long as you have your super magnet, you should hold that magnet at a 45 degree angle to your tabletop and allow the coins to slide down the wide face of the magnet. The real silver ones should drop very sluggishly. The brass coin will just drop at the speed of gravity. Paramagnetism. Of course....the missing 5 grams of weight on the fake was an instant tell.
    By the way....ANY dead CD or DVD drive contains two small neodymium magnets. They are about 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/8" thick. If you hack those magnets out of the drive, you can use them to test silver coins. Just hold the coin at a 45 (or slightly less) degree angle to a tabletop and allow the magnets to slide down the face of the coin. On a silver coin, you'll see that sluggish slide. I have tested various coins coins of known composition this way. A .999 round; a 90% silver dollar, a 1964 .835 Greek 30 drachma, a Mexican .720 coin, a Canada 50% "totem pole" dollar from 1977, and Swedish 5 Kroner 40% and a clad Kennedy 1965-1969 40%. The test stops working all that well once the Ag content drops to 40%...but that's because the magnets are small. With your super-bar magnet, I would expect there to be a noticeable effect even at 40%.
    There's you next video idea, amigo.

    I bought an 1889 Morgan silver dollar on Wish. I could choose from about 20 different dates for $3 a piece. It came from China and is super fake. It has a brown tint to it and weighs 23 grams but yet has barely any wear. Excellent information on your vlog.

    I bought a double headed (heads on both sides) morgan dollar at a local flea market that's like 2 miles from my house. The guy that sold it to me, said that he makes them. So he could easily produce normal fakes too, his look legit too, at first glance with no testing.

    I purchased a few morgans and one was the same weight looks and diameters as a real morgan.. The only way it was determined to be fake was to take it to my LCS and put it through a metal director. It was 95% copper 5% nickel.
