Jerry Garcia's father drowned as 6 year old Jerry watched, swimming in the river about a half our drive away from where I live in Humboldt County, California and I cannot listen to this song without getting chills, Mamma said don't go near that river. He sounds so emotional singing that line, that I cannot listen to it without crying.

Mama said, "Don't go near that river, Don't be hanging around old Catfish John." Come in the morning I'd always be there, Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn. Take me back to another morning, to a time so long ago, When the sweet magnolia blossomed, cotton fields as white as snow. Catfish John was a river hobo who lived and died by the river's bed, Looking back I still remember I was proud to be his friend. Mama said, "Don't go near that river, Don't be hanging around old Catfish John." Come in the morning I'd always be there, Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn. Did Jerry's guitar playing ever again reach the heights of this 1980 winter run? I'm not sure & if so I think it's w/JGB. Honest question from a lifelong fan but not a guitar player or musician of any kind sadly. After 1974 there were great shows & undoubtedly moments of brilliance but for me it's JGB where the magic happened. There's a handful of songs I love that came after '74 so I occasionally will listen to some 76-77 shows but don't ever make it through a full show. The 90-91 shows w/Hornsby & Branford are my favorites after Mickey's return in '75. Also a Capital Theater show from '76. It'd been ages since I had listened to a 2 drummer show when I decided to listen with an open mind to the famous Cornell '77 show & was really disappointed. I'd loved it growing up & the fact that it was such a high quality recording meant that was usually one of the first tapes received when getting into the wonderful tape trading community undoubtedly helped it become a "legendary" show. Maybe it is, but I was really disappointed after not hearing it for a number of years. No judgment, or whatnot, music is a personal thing & as such whatever one likes is right. But for me there's a freedom & lightness in JGB that I think was missing at times as their popularity grew & the "scene" exploded. It's almost like JGB was not just an escape from that but nearly ...therapy. The man just loved to play & JGB provided an outlet that for the most part GD no longer could. Just my personal take. We're all fans & there's no right or wrong. ✌🏽
Picture yourself the mother of a young man going out to the River Jordan to meet up with John in the morning about 2000 years ago. "Take me back to a time so long ago." Dangerous stuff. She'd be worried as Herod was after him and the Jews were slaves, especially if they spoke up. I love this song and miss my Uncle. The song is a bit of a metaphor for parents and elders not always being right about everything.
Yeah, I think I'm going to send this link to my son to give him a message (don't go listening to your Mom), but, uhhmmm, I think the author was talking about a slave from Vicksburg, not a slave from Bethlehem or Masada. Of course, the message could be timeless.
Send it to him! Tell him to question authority when he believes strongly about ant anything. On the Vicksburg thing, yes that is a common conceit: my premise is that Huckleberry Finn and his Mississippi River is juxtaposed with the River Jordan and Jim's name was changed to John to complete the imagery. Biblical imagery in Grateful Dead lyrics are pervasive and wonderful. We all take from the music what we take. I find it beautiful and has always been a big part of my life. Peace to you, your son and even your wife too! :-)
1980- most everybody added in a Stevie Wonder-style synthesizer solo, JGB included! Fits well with Jerry's mag slow-steppin' solos! Like a New Orleans procession.

I too have sinned and never revered the music that was available locally...I want to repent...

it's likely an allusion--as the writer of those lyrics sang gospel music sometimes

Nope. Johnny Russel did. But it's so Garcia/GD it might as well have been!
Actually is was written by Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds. Recorded and released in 1972 by Johnny Russel.
