Some people behave so differently and view the world is such a way it’s almost unbelievable. We’re all more similar than different and that can trick you into thinking most people are reasonable and not needlessly cruel but that’s simply untrue. Mother’s like this will play the victim all while purposely doing anything to berate and belittle you and than when you blow up use that against you, all with the intent to do so. Meanwhile you can’t rationalize any of that behaviour and fall for it again and again, maybe it is my fault, maybe my boundaries are wrong, no one would be so malicious, no mother wants to be at odds with their sons! But some genuinely do and even if you can never understand why you know it to be true.

Plus she informed Uncle Jun that Tony was seeing a shrink, encouraging him to see Tony as a liability that needed to be gotten rid of... which is the way real-life mobsters see other mobsters who seek therapy.

The writing of this was so good. My mom was an abusive alcoholic who beat me and kicked me out at 15. If something good happened to me, she was miserable, if something bad happened, she relished in it. This is one of my favorite shows, but Tony and Livia's dynamic is so hard for me to watch . Every time I see Tony beg people to just WATCH how gleeful she is in this scene (and the scene where he falls down her steps and she laughs), I tear up for him. JG perfected showing glimpses of the gaslit little boy that lurks inside of Tony, who is just begging for someone to see what a monster his mother is.

@@DisturbedVette I agree! I didn’t watch a lot of TV when this series was popular, so I’m discovering it in 2022-2023. Holy moly, James Gandolfini really is as good as everyone keeps going on about. I understand that he passed away in 2013, which is a damn shame. He was held in the highest regard by the best actors of our time. Some of it is a bit derivative of the typical mob type stuff, like the plot lines and the thick, slangy Italian accents, but the whole cast was very good, I think. Yeah, this scene is the best I think I’ve seen in the series.
