  • The Crew debuted in 2014, developed by lots of developers from the first TDU game, followed by it's sequel The Crew 2 which received mix reception and now we are getting close to The Crew Motorfest. So I wondered how does the very first game hold up after 9 years later?

Personally I like both TC titles, and I have high hopes for Motorfest. The way it's picked up by the community and all makes me faithful. But yeah, if Motorfest would have a story, it would easily be the best racing game of recent years.

  • @PlanetThrill
    @PlanetThrill Год назад +241

I think the main reason why The Crew 2 and Motorfest have a completely different vibe compared to the first is because those two games have a different creative director.
The Crew 1's creative director was Julian Gerighty, who also directed The Division 2 (2019) and the new Star Wars Outlaws game coming in 2024, While The Crew 2 and Motorfest is directed by Stephane Beley.

Both directors are from Paris and their goal of objectives is to make new games not too basic from the original. TC1 has more traffic because police patrolling the streets and they dominate the whole game and police chasing occurs when you drive recklessly, it's okay to drive fast but don't be a reckless driver smashing against cars and landmarks around cops (tutorial for bad drivers). What makes TC1 so unique is looting crates and it depends on the higher the value of stolen items are which reflects on the difficulty of police chasing you.
Imo I think the new director is working against the former director's story aspects for some reason. TC1 makes us experience realistic US citizen vibes with a drama story and it's a game that most Americans love. TC1 is a game that majority of European youtubers and other foreign players don't really care about as what a true American racer loves.

I enjoyed The Crew back then. Yes, the story was nothing new, but I enjoyed the fact that there was one anyway. It gave you a good reason to drive from A to B and explore the map, which looked beautiful btw. My best multiplayer experiences were for sure the Calling All Units Police chase moments. Playing catch over a huge and diverse map was super fun especially with The Crew's goofy arcade handling. I know you marked them as a negative point in the vid, but I also really liked these huge, long missions. They really made you feel like you accomplished something when you won

I played TC1 ever since launch until TC2 launched, all expansions and so on.
The PvP was super fun as you had a bunch of races already available at launch with many more being added as updates came by.
Although, due to the netcode, it was a better experience when "No contact" was active because lag did make it annoying sometimes.
It also suffered a bit from the voting mechanics so you had lobbies where people would do the same events for over an hour.
The Wild Run update was a huge improvement at the time and boy let me tell you, those races you had to do for high ranks were sweaty. Pretty hard competition among players so thats a plus.
    Overall it was really fun.

TC1 was the first game ive invested a lot of hours into. Especially pvp and vowing not to use any meta cars in the game. The story in TC1 was far better than TC2 and I really wished TC2 would follow suit. But apparently not and followed more of a horizon route which kinda irked me. TC1 had an identity of its own and the second game, while innovated in some ways, it clearly drew inspiration from horizon, and especially now with motorfest. Im honestly cautious of motorfest due to how again its almost a horizon copy, the smaller map (though thats just my nitpick) and the fact you could import your collection in TC2, makes motorfest feel more of a DLC than a standalone game. But the game seems to be showing some good stuff so who knows

Also to answer you on the ending of the video: Just recently (the time this comment was posted) Me and my friends were in the Closed Beta of Motorfest driving our cars and such, one of the random players thought it would be a great idea to fly a plane up 1000 feet into the air and drop a boat directly on me and my friends at break neck speeds.

The insane amount of Easter eggs which this game had made it really fun to explore the map to find. I can remember myself forever searching up new Easter egg discoveries on the crew on RUclips. I even discovered one myself with the news papers. One of the headlines talks about the BBC getting slammed for something.
I must also add that I have returned to the crew 1 many times whereas I’ve never returned to the crew 2. I prefer the darker gloomier lighting and it feels more grown up as a game. Not aimed at the Forza demographic.

I believe about 2-3 years ago I met this person on an Xbox group post and he introduced me to the speed trap on the Bonneville Salt Flats in The Crew 1. For about a year went back and forth to see who could get the faster speed, it started at about ~250mph then as we upgraded and bought new drag cars it got close to 400mph. I remember the sense of relief and joy knowing I had beat his record only for him to do it the next day. To this day I’m still trying to beat my own records whether it be at the speed trap or the Ski Jump up north. The Crew 1 will forever be one of my favorites to go back to!

Honestly, I have only good memories about the Crew 1. On launch I played it on the 360, but then bought on sale on the Ubisoft launcher. I honestly enjoyed the grind since every car purchase felt well earned and meaningful, unlike the Forza series where I don't feel a difference between buying a Golf GTI and Mclaren P1. I think the reason that TC2 moved to the festival mood is because of the Wild Run Crew 1 update. It was received extremely well by the community ( I also loved it), because it introduced a ton of new stuff. Major graphics update, handling update(which was the most disliked part about the game), drift cars, bikes, the Summit, thousand horsepower drag cars and etc. Also the skills (jump, smash, autocross) were the main way to get platinum parts and level a vehicle the fastest way. You were able to max a spec from 0 to max in 1 or 2 hours, depending on how lucky you get from the reward parts. The money part wasn't also a big issue. The easiest way to get bucks was to add random guys from the world to you friends list and send them on 12 hour missions. The Summit was the most interesting part for me, because you got rewarded with exclusives for performing well.

Got into the crew 1 when it was free on christmas. I played the living sht out of it, and when I got my first job, bought the ultimate pack with all the DLCs as a thank you to Ivory Tower. Later when I worked as a sysadmin, this was the only game I enjoyed at work, alongside Mirror's Edge Catalyst. I could just casually cruise through those hours long races, and pause if there was work to do. The people who wrote a bad review because of the quantity over quality map had some serious *copium*. At least this smaller studio attempted to do something insane.
Also, the real cop players in crate delivery are absolutely overpowered. At top speed they can just casually bust you by cruising next to you. And other racers can't do anything other than use those 2 powerups, which obviously doesn't really affect cop players. Also, bring a shield, and an offensive perk. The AI is so scripted, that their powerup cooldown is the exact same as the shield, so you can dodge all of them, and by the time 3-4 cops catch up to you, your offensive perk recharges, which throws all of them off the road, and repeat. So with AIs only, it's a walk in the park.
But that doesn't matter, I got all the fragment cars, and only upgraded cars from crate deliveries (after the story). Not the most effective, but the most fun. I'm omw to having every car fully upgraded. Unfortunately, some crew/multiplayer achievements aren't really possible, since none of my friends play this game.
If there's someone who still plays this game, feel free to add me on discord: @hrrz
*Also, look at the crew's reddit to see how bad Motorfest is. Most people can't start the closed beta because it crashes, and for those of us who can, it's unplayable. The performance continously degrades over a short period of time, until it reaches 7-8 fps, regardless of resolution, settings, hardware, drivers, doesn't matter.*

I played a lot of the crew 1, and it's fun. The best part about it is the exploration and car selection imo, cruising in the canyons with a nice f40 is fantastic. I don't remember the story since i played it like 6 years ago though.
In general i'd say the map is really good, you can feel the different vibes from different places, cities (the bigger ones) are not bad, and the landscapes are very cool. And the fact you can explore all the offroad areas is extremely cool, this is what i missed from nfs. I still remember driving my 370z off road somewhere, seeing a dirt road, taking it, and arriving to a nice lake with many trees. I had to take a picture.
Driving is ok, it does its job and is not horrible, i like it. Bikes are a cool addition too, they have some cool bikes and it's fun going through traffic with them.
Overall i'd give this game a 8/10, it's fun, has a good car selection that you can mod too, the map is beautiful, driving is enjoyable but not perfect, and has great replay value because of the great amount of races there are and also because of how nice it is just to drive around and look at the map

I got this game soon after it came out and I’ve played for a few hundred hours with most of those hours being with my friends and I absolutely loved the multiplayer. The multiplayer aspect of playing through the story together was great as the story missions become way more fun when doing it with multiple people but the PVP was also really good and I actually preferred the old PVP system to the new one in the crew 2. The PVP was also a great way to earn bucks and since it was so fun at the same time it made it really easy to grind for the more expensive vehicles but the biggest takeaway from both the PVP and story for me is how the were both good by themselves but became great when playing with friends and because of that the crew 1 will always have a special place in my heart with all of the memories me and my friends made

This game was amazing, to me they nailed it at launch. Multiplayer was extremely fun and extremely balanced, with only competitive pvp races and no mini games or other pvp activities. Co-op campaign was fine but the pvp took the cake.
Back in the early days it was divided by sections for example the Midwest which had the street tuner and dealer, had a street heavy pvp race pool, one or two perf and one dirt.
Cars were extremely balanced though us tryhards knew the Gallardo and skyline had a small edge over everything else, though you could still use other cars and be good, I liked to use the agera.
If you raced and won enough in an area you would rank up in that area all the way to underboss and boss while also ranking up for the whole world. This was a ranking across all players in your platform and reaching higher ranks gave you insane salary because every time you log in you get salary based on your rank. I got to boss for the Midwest and overall underboss and I got 100k+ every day just for logging in.
This game, on the earliest physics, earliest lobbies was in my opinion the most fun any racing game has been. It was extremely replayable, extremely grindable and the racing was extremely close. Often times you would have two, three or four way battles for the win every single time.
Release day The crew will forever be to me one of the best if not the best racing game ever. Even better than the OG need for speed games and midnight club.

Damn I’m old, I remember when this game came out and actually built my gaming PC for it.
Allegedly, The Xbox 360 version was originally going to be the Wii U port, but the Wii U was to much of a pain to develop for so they shifted to port it to the 360 instead as it was architecturally speaking the closest of the 7th gen to 8th gen consoles.
Also I’m not a fan of the “calling all units” update ruining the Freerome police chases.
The multiplayer was fun, sometimes, but I found it mostly frustrating most of the time, seemed like the other players were almost always try hards with the extremely overpowered cars like the Nissan R34 GTR (sort of the same problem with NFS Heat with that Porsche 911) or the were kids playing bumper cars. The pre Wild Run Physics didn’t handle that particularly well and even with the physics update it was still a pain. Note that i was playing with assists set to “sport” or “hardcore”, basically turning reducing traction control and stability control.

The best multiplayer moments would have to be driving in a full crew with my IRL friends at the time from Miami to Grand Canyon to then Los Angeles and then from Seattle to Niagara falls.
The matchmaking was incredibly broken and would sometimes kick 1 person out or just not search at all so we would have to restart but when we got into multiplayer races it was really fun.
There was this Dirt race that let you take some shortcuts at the end of the hill and I would always abuse it to get either 2nd or 1st if I was lucky with my Ford Focus.
I remember a friend of mine used a Ford GT in performance races and would always win. I thought at first that we were just sucking but it was OP as hell during those days.
I also remember we would always cruise up to those snowy mountains at the mid-north of the map and drift along the roads past Yellowstone. Those were also some of my favorite memories.
I said this back when the game came out but this game truly felt like a modern ''Road Trip Adventure'' but more serious and without the cartoon-style that game had.
Another memory I remember I had was that me and my friends would matchmake into an online lobby and I saw a username that I thought was familiar
''Dark...something something wtf is it him?''
And it turned out it was an IRL friend of mine who also played TC1 and he ended up joining our voice calls and did races with us. That was insane lol.

I played all the closed alphas/betas for the base game and all the DLCs.
After the alphas that game was the first one I ever preordered (the super duper deluxe edition as well)
Grinded that game from release on until about the time the cop DLC dropped. Couldn't get the DLC at the time and some other game got "in the way"...
Had much fun and good PvP memories. Grinding the specific stat bonuses on platinum parts you wanted was a bit tedious but doable.
With the economy there was also the possibility to use your friend's profiles to "drive" events for you, set up the 8 hour events overnight and you can claim rewards after that time passively. Of course things like 30 minute ones were also a possibility.
I recently also logged back in and was surprised that I got rewards immediately after logging in 😂

Great relaxing game where you can just drive with your friends. Same as TDU, but way more arcade. Unfortunately it didn't took off as much as it deserved: some categories of people just can't play anything new.

    • @rightbehindyou9398

Yeah that's true, in fact some people are afraid of anything new and see it as a negative thing, explains a lot of the negative reviews on (and even before) launch, which just snowballed because lets be honest - most people don't have a mind of their own. This is the exact same story as The Crew's predecessors, being TDU 2 and Driver SF, which both had mixed receptions at launch only to be praised some 10 years later for being unique.

I feel like this game is kinda underrated. Unlike Motorfest, which is very similar in style to FH, it stood out and was unique. Of course, it had flaws: No proper Home/Garage where you can walk, no ability to sell vehicles, crew limit of 4, no option for a new gamesave. But the story, while not as good as Driver SF of course, really stood out. Plus the huge map, that was properly utilized in the story. Overall i made some good memories in The Crew 1!
Great video, nice to see a flashback of this game.

That's why you send friends and play PVP (which is extremely fun to this day when you find players), rank up in your faction and raise your daily salary, you can raise it up to over 100k+ per day for simply logging in. But yeah I know, they kinda threw the whole factions thing in the bin with the Wild Run update, instead of working further on it and making it better (as they originally promised).

Played The Crew fairly early in its life cycle. Multiplayer races were a mess. There were clear optimal cars for most classes, so you'd see the same vehicles on repeat. The Mini for example dominated Street and Circuit races, while Raid was dominated by another car I forgot. Lag switches were rampant, so some races were not playable at all. Outside of those occurences, kinda alright though. Dirt and Performance races were always a thrill.

My personal problem about PvP is there's actually meta car for every class, so you must use that car in order win the race, also it kill diversity of the car pool.

Being an 11 year old from the Philippines at the time competing in the races was very difficult due to the poor internet connection and with micro transactions simply being not an option for me this pvp mode really came in clutch for me to be able to buy all the cars i wanted to buy ingame.
