Ok not only did this blow my mind, a light bulb just came on! Probably the most eye opening educational challenging video I’ve ever witnessed!!! Thank you!!
Wow, I didn’t know you guys were friends... I only watch maybe 5 drum guys on RUclips and you and David Cola are 2 of them, so weird. Now that I think of it, all the drummers I watch are down to earth, cool guys, that I’d hang out with... I’d rather support someone I can relate to. I love David’s videos for the same reason the trolls hate on him sometimes - because he’s living the dream and he’s one hell of a talented drummer. He looks like a college kid but he’s got the chops of a grizzled veteran. He’s grabbing life with both hands and making it on his passion as a drummer. What a dick. Lmao. This was a cool video, and it 1) showed me how much I need to practice this and 2) revealed David Colas superhuman time and 3) made me feel better when you had to take it slow too! Thanks for being humble enough to show us that even very good drummers need to start slow and practice things sometimes. Jeez Louise, just banging out polyrhythms on your chest ain’t easy!
Hey Dan! Thanks for the kind words brother! David is awesome! We actually met for the first time at NAMM 2014 I think?? We were friends through social media and I ended up picking him up and we hung at NAMM both days that year. Super great guy man, humble, and an incredible fucking musician. I look up to him just like I look up to Mike J and those cats. We’re all in this together man! I love making these vids and showing my own mistakes. Trying to show what a real practice sesh looks like. We all have our own ways of figuring out new things and hopefully these videos give a little insight into how I do that! It’s been motivating me to practice more as well which is great! Sometimes it’s tough to dedicate time to JUSY learn something new and often I feel like we don’t consciously make that decision enough. Trying to get better and learn as often as possible!!! Love the drums and the community as well. Thanks for being a part of it Dan!
love the ending. I learn groups of 10 notes in 5/4 first... in 8th notes counting 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & then once I have the "pattern" I put the met into 16ths 1e&a 2e&a etc.
This is a cool exercise. I’ll note that as you play the accents, they will follow a pattern in the triplet or 16th note count. For example, the five note pattern played as triplets and starting on the “1” (or downbeat) the next accent will be on “let” of the next beat and then the “trip” of the next beat followed by the next downbeat which would be “2”. So when I do this I’m keeping aware of the accent pattern. Sixteenth notes accenting every 5th note starting on the “1” then “E” (of 2) “and” (of 3) “a” (of 4) to keep in going next accent starts on “2” and so forth.. I really enjoy your channel and content as well as not being afraid to show weaknesses. You keep it real
Question... In the notation, the last 16th note is on the right hand which would place the downbeat of 1 on the left to end the phrase. When you play it faster the last note is on the left hand.. what are you doing differently? (i could be wrong).
Phillip House When (future me) played the full lick at the end I (he) played the 10 lick over 2 full measures. So 32 notes total. I played the 10 lick twice and then played R L to finish it off. BUT yes if you play the lick for only ONE bar then the last note is technically a (R) but you can always alter the last few notes of the full lick to end however you want!
Awsome video. Give lot of insperation to practice. Also, try to do the pardiddel exerscise with counting the accents but playing all the notes in the same volume. It will break your brain. Thanks for the video😁
On the first exercise, I'd rather think the difficulty would be to try with no accent or with accents on 1234 instead of the accents of the paradiddle.

I am about to practice, this is great timing!... When I wrote that I didn't think I was going to be slapping myself in 5.
Future Brandon! Genius man! You’re the man 💪🏻
These videos are saving me a Berklee-school-of-music amount of money

LMAO future Brandon interactions crack me up
Oohh yeeeh this is the kind of content I need!
The first part (paradiddle counted in triplets) reminds me of some stuff I read in Rick's Licks by Rick Gratton.
This is def some next gen stuff.
yo brandon nice vid!!!! i hope you get 30,000 subs.
