      Well can't say about Nissan but certainly wrong about some Dodges my 2003 Dakota 4x4 is still going strong over 240,000 miles. Original engine and transmission just general maintenance keeps her running great. Sure some things have worn and been replaced but that's expected especially in some of the crap I have to drive in. That's why I have a 4x4 to start with. I have seen people have a lot of engine trouble with the Dakota engines but my 4.7 magnum still purrs and no matter how cold it gets it still starts soon as you crank it.

    We bought our 2007 Pathfinder SE new and it is still going strong at 261,000 miles. Love this car. The black paint has stayed gorgeous even though it’s been outside since 2015. (We buffed it once, hand wash it and keep it waxed). We change the oil ourselves every 4,000 miles with full synthetic, change the transmission fluid every 30-35k, coolant every 60k, spark plugs every 100k, all filters at factory recommended intervals, and brake fluid every 2-3 years. We had the infamous transmission cooler leak inside the radiator at 80,000 miles. Nissan replaced the transmission and radiator and our cost came in at $1500 which was reasonable considering the high cost of what they had to do. I had them bypass the internal transmission cooler so it would never happen again (it also has an external cooler). Then we had the timing chain guide wear problem at 90,000 miles Had the guides replaced and had the water pump replaced at the same time since they were in there (it wasn’t having a problem). That all cost about $1,000. Since then we have replaced the U joints, the front right wheel bearing, brake switch, air bag switch assembly, coolant pipe, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, shifter cable, valve cover gaskets, replace A/C air control actuator in dash, replaced one oxygen sensor, serpentine belt and tensioner and the fuel gauge sensor. Everything was spread out over the last 14 years. Original brakes lasted to 200,000 miles with mostly in town driving with life still left on them. Turned the rotors and they are still going strong. Once we got through the two problems these cars are known for (before 100,000 miles). It’s been a really good car. Still get lots of compliments on it. The original alternator is still going strong! No check engine lights and drives great. There has been some expense to get it to this point but we love this car and it’s been worth it.

    I think the key to saving money on old cars is to live in a place where they don't have emissions checks to register your vehicle. I love the environment but when I discovered (in California) that they don't actually test the emissions coming out of your car, they only check the computer codes, I smelled a scam.

    • @55whiplash
      @55whiplash 3 года назад +3

      What's that thing they shove up the exhaust pipe for? I always get the measurements of the exhaust components in PPM so they're measuring something. I've always passed smog tests easily. I just clear all the codes when I pull up to the gas station that does the test even when a check engine light has been on and that's always worked. Even the 1989 Volvo 240 always passes, registering around 10% of the maximum emissions, so I don't see it as that big a deal.

    • @ratboygenius
      @ratboygenius 3 года назад +9

      If the check engine light is off. It's going to pass the sniffer test.....most likely. Unless the catalytic converter is marginal. They stopped doing emissions testing in my area. When they were testing, it was by a Canadian company. I always thought that was fishy. Why couldn't my state find an American company to test my American car emissions. Mine never failed. Probably because I took it out on the freeway before the test and drove to the testing station in 3rd. Got it nice & hot before the test. Hot catalytic converter = cleaner test.

      My hidden gem is this 04 Mitsubishi outlander I got. I'm banging 221k miles and it runs so strong and quite, its honestly quality made as far as reliability goes and considering its AWD, and basically a tiny SUV. It's perfect for me and I highly reccomend first generation Outlander to anybody in need of a cheap and reliable AWD vehicle with surprisingly decent room.
      Granted it's not the more popular honda or..what is it, I forgot, it's not toyota is it? The crossover scene of the early 2000s, all where actually pretty good.
      But the outlander is vastly overshadowed and the pricing reflects it, you can scoop one of very cheap as compared to the others. (And it's not because its worse)

    With the issue on the diesel powered Chevy for temperature gage that drops to the cold side. It's winter time guys. Diesel engines when in cold weather will run cold while exposed to the cold weather. A simple solution is to place a large piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to obstruct the air flow. It will not harm the engine whatsoever. I always have to do this on my Simi every winter season. Your temperature gage is likely working perfectly fine.
