Yeah, I fucked that up. Sadly all these publishers are the same. Also I'll pin this so the comments don't fill with this response.
Ugh, I do hate making mistakes like this since you can't fix a video after it's up. This is gonna annoy me for hours.

Funny how some new games for sale now put up a disclaimer; "No loot boxes" as an important sell point. Kinda like down here in Houston where most new For Sale signs on houses have included the disclaimer "No Flood Damage" after Harvey.
Both major disasters with long range reprocussions on future sales.

I'm gonna remember 2017 as the year when people finally stopped giving Activision/Blizzard a free pass on everything. Even still, they got out-villained by EA (and maybe WB as well) in the end. Hopefully the current year won't be a continuation of this race to the absolute bottom.

    • @MrToren01
      @MrToren01 6 лет назад +9

ehhh maybe, when the dawning event hit Activision/Bungie probably become just as bad as EA YongYea did a review about a group of people who did the mathematics for all the rewards in Bright Engrams, and it would take on average $10,000 per year or 4.57 years of grinding public events in a games that has a 3 year lifespan.

Eville Caston honestly I didn't pick up Battlefront 2 because I heard about its shit so I still had respect for EA. Then I went to play battlefield 1 and I couldn't play the French operations that I spent 15 dollars on because I had to buy the season pass to access the content. And I couldn't play the base French DLC maps either because they added a random non affiliated map to the playlist that costs like 2 bucks that I didn't buy

    • @Shtoops

I'd say Blizzard still gets a pass. It's kind of like how Valve was a few years ago. Valve had a ton of goodwill and such built up so they kept getting away with stuff. But they eventually lost that. Blizzard is in a very similar position and I believe it's approaching the tipping point.

    • @mauryj.3415

EA: We’re EA how can we help?
Oh wait, that means a fee
You paid full price for our new game?
To us that’s still for free
Here’s a fee to load the game
    Here’s a fee to start
Here’s a cost to simply spawn
    You see, we’re pretty smart
It doesn’t matter what you spent
    That was just to “join”
So step right up, break out the cash
As we kick you in the groin.
    Allowing you to just improve
    By playing is a sin
When we can sell you super gear
And make this pay to win.
    If you wanted Star Wars
    You simply have no choice
We only want to see your cash
    You really have no voice
    This business would be perfect
If not for all the lamers
We wish we could just rob you blind
And not deal with the gamers.

It’s high noon in Mordor. A lone tumbleweed rattles its way across the black, volcanic plain. A felbeast wails mournfully, somewhere in the distance. But the two orcs standing on the plain below do not react. They stand still, hands hovering over the axes strapped to their belts. “I thought I told you, Pushkrimp,” says the larger orc. “I’m the only Pushkrimp in these parts. This evil fantasy kingdom ain’t big enough for the two of us, so why don’t you Push off while you still can.”
The other orc narrows his eyes and spits. “And I told YOU, Pushkrimp,” he replies, “I’ve been Pushin’ Krimps since I was knee-high to a Nazgul. If anyone’s gettin’ pushes off ‘round here, it’s gonna be you.”
Both orcs jump backwards, clawed hands grasping for their weapons. They raise their axes, ready to throw, when all of a sudden...
WHAM! Both orcs are crushed into paste by a giant lootbox falling from the sky. But at least they got a sense of Pride and Accomplishment.

someone who actually wants to play a game.

I don't know about other countries, but Destiny 2 saw a major sale on over the Christmas period, possibly to try entice new players with the lure of a 50% off a relatively new game? But to see such a big sale on a triple-A title not long out like that, kind of gives more of an impression of failure than success.

I think it has a lot to do with the PR disaster-piece that is Destiny 2 over the course of December and the fact that it could make a potentially good Christmas present had more to do with it.
Success or failure of the game itself had little to do with it going on sale. That’s how I see it as there are dozens of cases of fantastic games that people really like selling poorly and mediocre games selling like crazy (No Man’s Sky).

I bet it's because idiot executives still think that either girls don't play games, or that they only play casual games on their phone. They probably don't realize that there's a huge untapped market right before them, it feel like the executives and people marketing games still think the only people playing games are stereotypical teenage boys who only like explosions, despite it being proved false time and again. Just look at the Sims, before that game, no one believed a virtual dollhouse could be popular, but in hindsight, its one of the most popular and influential series in game history.

The worst part about the grind at the end of Shadow of War is that the ending you get is terrible. The entire game is about as non-canon as you can get, but the ending doesn't get creative, it just tries to tie itself to the Lord of the Rings. As if it was canon or something. Why?

It's an easter egg-like epilogue cutscene, what exactly did you expect? It's basically "Talion *finally* becomes a Nazgul then years later dies and goes to the LOTR-equivalent of the afterlife". It wasn't meant to be some sort of huge reward for grinding through the game, it was something that you were supposed to stumble across after you played through a certain number of Shadow War stages. The *actual* ending to the game is the one you get at the end of Act III.

As an indie dev, here's what bugs me about these games which harp on nostalgia:
Developers need to learn to draw inspiration from older games, while making use of the gaming advances of nowadays. Bad cameras, level design, and generally poor design choices aren't good parts of the good old games. They were (and still are) the result of inexperienced developers, or developers who want to arbitrarily make their game hard.
These aren't good design choices to make. We shouldn't consider this when we want to pump new life into old genres, otherwise we'll end up with bad games.

After observing Blizzard for few years, playing their games, I can take a guess that Acti/Blizz is all about checking how much bullshit they can slip past the radar. Seeing how Blizz is successful with most bs, maybe they were thinking that they were some kind of masterminds?
I don't know which I despise more: these direct middle fingers from Warner Bros and such, where I at least outright know not to buy their games, or these quick fingers pointed whenever I turn around and they think I didn't noticed.

Oh my God, absolutely agree. Literally, you can tear apart any other microtransactic game all you want and people will agree, but as soon as you try to attack the perfect and immutable Blizzard people rush to actively defend their bullshit and advocate directly against the consumer.
Overwatch put paid RNG microtransactions in a premium AAA game and people literally praise them for it. World of Warcraft wants you to pay for both a subscription and every single expansion, and Blizz put microtransactions on top of that. Hearthstone is literally a pay-to-win mobile card game. Yet people love them. This is exactly how microtransactions got out of the mobile hellhole and into premium games and why they're staying.

    • @christopherniewiadomski4075
      @christopherniewiadomski4075 6 лет назад +1

The worst way Blizzard is anti-consumer is the complete disregard for their loyal customers. The changes they put into their games ignore old players, catering to newer and inexperienced crowd* (extreme casualisation of Blizzard games isn't something new, its the norm, even for their new titles), spoiling the fun that some of said "old players" had with the game and sometimes a sole reason they were playing it and not any other.
They strongly go by two principle:
      - you paid, so piss off, make space for another customer.
      - we can do anything, because we have enough loyal drones that will pay us no matter what we do.
In general, "you already paid, so you won't go away, because you will be feeling remorse for leaving behind all the investment put into our games, and if you actually go away, we don't care, there are plenty more waiting behind you". This is everything Blizzard is today. And nostalgia, tons of nostalgia they aren't afraid to use against players just to bait them into spending another penny.
      * "waaah, we were owned by this mechanic that isn't directly obvious on first sight and you need to think for a second how it works instead of rushing mindlessly, nerf it!" is honestly enough Blizzard needs to push a change.

Ethan Bradberry. I honestly don't know what your end goal is with this line of questioning. By your own admission, you already admit that you are subscribed to at least one. If you want to find more, all you have to do is type "women shouldn't game" or "girls are ruining gaming" into the RUclips search bar and PICK ONE. I'm sure within them will consist of many things that fall under sexist along with hyper critical statements based solely on gender or race. And I also don't see your point about asking about the cunt Vs dick thing because I already said that RUclipsrs were well within their rights to use such forms of insults and even pointed out one that I liked. I like Spoony a lot too but he made a video critiquing FFX and he made a song that was basically "Gay gay fag fag sissy gay fag". Those are literally the only words. He apologized later on for it, saying he never should have done this but Jim Sterling has NEVER HAD to make such an apology because he would never even go there, even for a joke. My point with my initial compliment to Jim is that he goes out of his way NOT to be harsh towards any demographic that isn't his own. Can you accept THAT as the point? I just can't believe I'm being questioned on the merits of a comment that basically says "thank you for being nice to people like me." This isn't a debate. I am thankful for this and am glad I NEVER have to worry about Jim going down that road unlike when Spoony made his 'fun' little gay song, pewdiepie dropped the n bomb, and jontron said some very nice things about preserving his race and 'retards'. It's a short search if you genuinely want to find it. Or do these not 'count'?

It's incredible just how rubbish EA Battlefront 2 was.
The entire progression system is looped through loot boxes, which isn't an enjoyable, or even inspired mechanic. If if you couldn't buy them at start, it would have still been a annoyance.
The Star Cards, lackluster multiplayer, completely shit single player, and tacked on Arcade (WTB INSTANT ACTION!), all add up, to a joke of a game, that clearly has no purpose, but to attempt to gain money. I'm honestly angry at not just EA at this point, but at Dice as a company, for not standing up to their corporate overlords, and saying enough is enough. Have some dignity, have some self respect, and maybe, don't take a shit on Star Wars- Particularly not Battlefront.

One cold winter morning, Mickey Mouse woke up and looked out the window, and there he saw written in the snow with urine, "Mickey Sucks." Mickey called the police, wanting to find out who would do this. A few hours later, the police have completed their investigation and come back with their findings. They say to Mickey, "Well, Mr. Mouse, we have bad news, and we have worse news." Mickey asks to hear the bad news, and the police tell him it's Goofy's urine. Then Mickey asks about the worse news. The police tell him it's Minnie's hand writing.

It's sad, because both of those consoles have some damn good games for them, but other decisions both respective companies made, like forcing you to PAY to play multiplayer online and of course the freaking lootboxes, were just for the sole purpose of forcing you to pay more and it's a disgusting practice.

Not that I can see any reason to spend money on mobile games either.

This year seemed to have less broad diarrhea splattered everywhere like previous years, but it had really REALLY hard concentrated shit in a few places.
And as a giant Mass Effect Trilogy fan I feel sick to my core as I know it's not gonna be long before I'm going to have to mourn that franchise once EA kills it after Anthem doesn't do well after all the shit EA pulled and killed its audience's faith in its games.
I've already made peace with the fact that we're never gonna have a good Mass Effect game again, but to think of Bioware's future death and inability to ever make ANYTHING good again is really heartbreaking.
Hopefully the writers of the Trilogy will go on to write for Star Trek or work on developing a new Massive galactic society type game. Hopefully WITHOUT EA or some other cartoon villain ready to shiv them (no offense Skeletor)

      $$$
It usually works this way if you're not jim sterling.
These generic game review companies like IGN live by the fact that they have to release their review the earliest. And the only way they can do that if they suck the publisher's cock because without them they won't get their games early.

And when asked why the loot-boxes were like this, they said it was for 'The best online experience.' I highly doubt that EA.

I hope EA loses exclusive rights to Star Wars because I would rather see Bandai-Namco make a Star Wars fighting games based on SoulCalibur or be given to Temco-Koei so Omega Force can make a new Dynasty Warriors but with the Star Wars paintjob, just like how Hyrule Warriors was DW but with Zelda attached.
    Oh! And happy birthday, Jim.

    • @RippahRooJizah

But the question is would Disney give Bamco or Tecmo-Koei the rights to the franchise? Maybe make a couple games themselves, but I think if Disney is going to give the rights to a game publisher, it'll be a big US publisher.
So who would it be if not EA? Who would they give it to that sounds reasonable and not piss off too many people?

    • @stephen2624

I would buy a "Star Wars - Star Warriors: Empires" in a Heartbeat.
If Omega Force ever is to do a Star Wars game they better go the "Empires" route.
Create Custom Characters (including aliens), hire/capture Lore Characters, conquer the Galaxy for either the Empire, the Rebellion or the Hutt Cartel.
Lots of Weapon/Mousou Kits to choose from or creating a completely unique one.
DW:E ist the perfect basis for a Star Wars game.

You're right. That Beautiful People moment WAS worth replaying again. In fact, I watched it over and over.
It's a shame that shareholder-driven corporatised game production has come to rule the industry because that's the core reason everything is so appallingly shit, why companies like Activision and WB are making such stupidly daft decisions pertaining to how games work. I think their long-term strategy is simply to outlive the Jim Sterlings of the world, that if there is a regular crop of however-many million new 14yo gamers out there who know no better than to pay for every tiny upgrade -- having been trained to pay-to-play by mobile gaming -- then eventually those "re-educated" 14yos will out-number the rest of us who remember what gaming used to be about and every PoS game can be in-game store-delirious and make the T2/GTA5O levels of creamy cash on every piece of crap their programmers can pump out. This is what happens when too much money gets involved.
But, please DO still rail against the dying of the light, Jim. There are still some of us who remember gaming as you do.

1-They own the license to the Star Wars games which is one of my favorite franchises of all time & we've seen how they ruined it .
2-Their parasitic attitude of buying beloved legendary developers like BioWare & turning them into shells of their former selves .

It's Tallen, from the ffuuuutttuuurrreee. I stopped playing Shadow of War due to the loot boxes. But now that they've removed them, I've played through again. Games a blast. Better than Shadow of Mordor. DLC being $15 for a new reskinned tribe was pretty shitty though.

Another year, another load of shit that makes you question how hasn't the industry crumbled beneath the weight of it yet. I mean seriously, that we haven't had a crash yet when we had such large scale disaster such as BF2 and the lootbox debacle is remarkable...
Keep up the good job Jim. I hope this year brings you nothing but good stuff.

TheLegendaryVGA96 there were also some really good releases this year. Its just the shit releases far outshadowed the good ones (most notably the AAA games)

The A-Trane I know that, but taking into account the great/fiasco ratio we've had in the last years still baffles me...

The game industry we once knew died long ago. What we see today is the undying, Lovecraftian-esque horror its reanimated corpse mutated into.

This is getting really bad, how can i trust to buy any game in the steam store when there is piles of shit everywhere? I can't even buy a game now without checking playthroughs to check that the game isn't a broken hell hole thereby spoiling the game experience in the first place.
This is bad because with bad games clogging up the entire store even multiplayer games suffer cause people can't be bothered shifting through the shit to find them.
Also, the steam store has lost a lot of reputation because people have spent $50 on games only to find they are glitchy stains on their already strained lifestyle.
Case in point we may need another game store site that has good quality control because the steam store has turned into some black market that can't be even bothered to clean its floor.

You what? Yooka-Laylee no.9 in worst of the year? I can understand someone feeling disappointed with the game as a whole but with the complete deluge of shite we got this year this seems a bit silly. Also for all the faults you could level at the game, bad platforming controls are definitely not one of them.

Justin Wilson I think it made the list because originally Jim was looking forward to it, even admitting he backed it to cock a snook at Microsoft’s treatment of RARE, only to find it was (in an overused meme) MEDIOCRE!

I was a backer too, I definitely have issues with the game, particularly regarding level structure, but overall it never lied about what it was going to be: a warts-and-all N64 era platformer, and on that it delivered. I feel there's a lot of exaggerated expectation vs reality going on with this one, it was never going to match the sheer polish of the likes of Banjo-Kazooie on the budget they had, especially with modern asset requirements. People tend to underestimate the effects Nintendo's money, resources and assistance had on Rare's overall quality.
With the above in mind I personally find some of Jim's complaints about the game a tad spurious.

Jim, I don't know if you'll read this but since Destiny 2 was such a wet blanket, you may like Bungie's older stuff back when they weren't bossed around by pre-season 1 Cyril Sneer. Halo predecessor, the Marathon Trilogy is my main example. If you thought Doom 4's backstory told via the Codex was a damn fine way to tell a story, I'm afraid Marathon did it first back in 1994.
It just wasn't given enough recognition because the trilogy used to be Macintosh only and old Macs generally made garbage gaming computers. Bungie, among others, did a damn fine job of rectifying that with their older games.
Imagine the original Doom with smoother platforming, rooms over rooms via 5D space that predates the Build Engine by 2 years, a rich, deep, complicated story that rivals Halo itself within only three games and told via terminals, similar to the datacubes, beautiful 2.5D environments, real liquids instead of hotplate polygons (in Marathon 2 onward at least) and in the sequels, _DUEL. WIELDED. DOUBLE-BARREL. SHOTGUNS._
The best part is that all three Marathon games are not only available on Windows now, but they are freeware on all main modern operating systems, thanks to the modern version of their engine, Aleph One, which is the Marathon equivalent to GZ Doom. alephone.lhowon.org/
You can get some great mods from the above link too, like Eternal, which is based on Halo's alpha story (which itself was a sequel to the Marathon games before becoming the Halo we know), Rubicon, Tempus Irae and Tempus Irae 2: the Lost Levels. (no, seriously)
Pathways into Darkness is also awesome but it's modern port is freeware on the OSX app store only. It's basically Wolfenstein 3D meets both System Shock games with a Quake 1 style setting, albeit one that isn't mostly brown and grey.
