2023 is almost over, and it has been an absolute triumph of a year for terrible videogames. From Gollum to Redfall, so many slices of software slimed their way onto shelves. From Kong to The Walking Dead, so much has been the absolute worst. Let's meet Skeletor once again and do this salty thing.

@@SpiderGansta Locks. A Soft lock I believe is when a character gets stuck. But you can get out of it, by say jumping over and over to dislodge yourself. A hard lock is when you have to reset. This was punned with the word locks, as in Goldilocks, meaning hair (not to be confused with the Scottish Loch, which means lake). Thus there are more soft locks (moments of being stuck) than Rapunzel (who has soft hair that can make a ten story climbable rope).

I am just shocked that Gilson isnt one of the default on the list, not sure if this means that there were people who managed to out gilson the Gilson or like you said, there are more deserving entries out there.

The absence of this year's GilsonLike is a bummer. Not that 2023 needed any more shitty games, but Steph talking about the latest GilsonLike is always a treat in my book.
2023 was a disappointing year in many aspects. I'm guessing this is one of them. Not giving us a new GilsonLike product to laugh at, such a Gilson move.

Angry Joe plays video games again? I stopped watching him when he completely fell off and only covered movies and Game of Thrones episodes.
Yeah the crime system in that game is absolute trash, it's like every single item in the game has some magical tracker. There's barely even any consequences to just shooting someone but so help you God if you accidentally pick something up, even if nobody sees you do it the universe knows man, it knows!
Anderson became a criminal by taking food in a cafeteria.
@@mrcheesemunch While I do agree that the crime system is screwed, the joke from the Angry Joe video revolves around one particular quest line that makes the crime system seem even more laughable!
One quest actually requires that you get arrested so that a secret police force can coerce you into working undercover for them, but that means you actually need to commit a crime first. ANY crime. No matter how small.
Which means that, at some point in the game, any minor transgression you commit, even something as pathetic as accidentally picking up a drink in a bar that doesn't belong to you, will _instantly_ make you the MOST WANTED CRIMINAL IN THE UNIVERSE, and every time you warp somewhere or try to visit a city, you will be mercilessly hunted down until they can arrest you!
It's actually pretty bloody dumb.
6:35 You know, as much of a soulless, money hungry parasite Game Mill is, that is an interesting little detail. Tying your skill tree to party members, as if you're learning from your companions...
A pat on the back to whatever poor sod thought of that, somehow remaining creative under Game Mill's punishing schedule. I'd like to see a game with heart have a go at this idea.
Fun fact, gamemill published big rigs over the road racing so thier standards are basically as low as you can get without being an a tutorial example game asset flip.
WoW already did something like that with the Soulbind system in Shadowlands. Not really learning from your soulbinds as much as gaining power from their side of bind though.

Meanwhile Nintendo is talking about getting GOTY for zelda from... err Edge, IGN, Game Informer, Giant Bomb and VGC. Publishers out of which IGN is the most credible, which is not saying much. Honestly its such a shallow grab you could experience 2nd hand shame for them.
For their second take if zela, but in an Ubisoft game, this time with its ground breaking, game changing maricle mechanic of gluing things together like it's dead rising? It's Zelda: Nutts and bolts if you will.

My main criticism of magic in fantasy games for forever has been that it is usually just various ways to shoot guys, not actually cool stuff that changes how you play the game like mind control, teleportation, etc. When I learned that Aveum literally just had magic that was guns I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
I actually don't even need it to be mechanically as complicated as mind control. Give spells that are aura effects. Give spells that freeze or knock people into the air. Give spells that do what guns can't like AOE effects. Give spells that impale or disable. I feel like most spell slinging games are just working off the shotgun, pistol, sniper, machine gun, melee mix that games have been working off for decades.

@@zackeryh250 But weapons with aoe effects already exist: flamethrowers, grenades, rockets, shotguns, etc. Borderlands basically turned their grenades into spells in tiny tina's DLC and it basically works due to how grenades already do whacky stuff anyway.

Gollum is so fascinating in how even after it's infamous reception that caused the developers, Daedalic Entertainment, to shut down their development division as a result the game is STILL being sold on store shelf's from my country Sweden. How has NO ONE bothered to remove this utter garbage of a game from the stores?
The fact that Skull Island: Rise of Kong and The Walking Dead game hasn't shutdown Gamemill Entertainment from publishing games is utterly baffling to say the least.
Surprised that The Day Before isn't here given how such a scam the game was that it shut down the developers very shortly after release.
Silent Hill Ascension is a demonstration that the concept of "sinking to new lows" has ABSOLUTELY no limit and Konami will always find ways to somehow baffle gamers with these atrocious decisions.

Remember Big Rigs? Some publishers/devs out there run their ship so efficiently on a shoestring budget that almost any bump in media or public attention instantly makes the product profitable, even if the margins are much lower than what the larger publishers will settle for. These kind of companies have been around forever, the Wii and PS2 eras were a heyday for all this crap. It's not even surprising anymore, as sad as that is.
Day Before would have had to last long enough to give Steph a chance to play it to get a review. And it didn't.
Jim mentioned they were trying to buy Day Before but it got pulled before they could, otherwise it would've been a shoe-in for #1 and i'm convinced Starfield wouldn't have made the list had Jim had a chance to play it.

The one highlight of Kong is... it hopefully has inspired a bunch of people to make games with the reason of "I can do better than that..."
This year of gaming does have me looking at the various game makers I've bought over the years...
Yeah, I think that game could inspire goldfish, head lice and certain species of cave mold to try to do better.
Honestly after seeing stuff like this and Design Delve on Asset Flipping, part of me wonders just how hard WOULD it be to create a passable game using only free store assets and a small amount of work. And I don't mean Minimum Viable Product, but an actual fleshed out game that's halfway decent

The voice acting goes from very sorrowful lines of "I don't want to kill you, you are like my brother" to very playful "oooh, don't mind if I do" when you pick up items.

If I saw the character model and didn't know it was supposed to be Gollum, I'd think it was a model of Mowgli who desperately needs to be in rehab. Also, I love the more regal into music on the 'best of' vid and the kazoo version for the 'worst of' vid; it's a great mood setter!
It feels like for every great game that came out this year there was just as many fighting for the worst game of the year.
It's almost like the industry as a whole took a look at itself and went "do you remember the plot of the producers? Well we're gonna do that, exactly that, and none of the other studios will expect it as they'll all be busy polishing their AAAs, well be getting drinks on the beach knowing a mill will be making bare minimum to make market for us and all the review copies from all the RUclips reviewers trying to make names for themselves as well as warn the game audience at large will alone be enough to cover my tab at the pub" not knowing that was the exact same thought the rest of the studios was thinking as well

@@samueljohnson8911 It is about as bad as Cyberpunk 2077 launch state. By that I mean that there was a lot of clipping issues, physics bugs and animation screw-ups along with bunch of miscelanious bugs. But if you had really strong computer, you could get lucky and evade many of those bugs.
Difference is that we expected Witcher 3 quality from Cyberpunk while expectations from Bugthesda were more along the lines of "Will the product set my computer on fire or will it just crash randomly every ten minutes"

Gollum is especially painful because, for me, it's the final nail in the coffin of a long fall from grace for a fomerly beloved studio.
Back when Daedalic made puzzle games and point and click adventures, they were GREAT.
We'd meet up after school to buy the newest games and go over to a friend's to play them together.
But they've been bought and sold so many times and went through so many dev and management changes they're unrecognizable.
Whispering World was the first game of their I've played and I still remember it.
Gollum is the game that ended Daedalic (as a developer). They announced in July that they'll only be a publisher moving forward.

I was somewhat shocked to see Gollum on the list. Not because I thought it was any good, but because I thought it came out (and the ensuing drama) was like 2 years ago until this reminded me it was from earlier this year!
I feel like this information age and all its overload really warped peoples' sense of time. So many events get broadcasted within a shorter time period that it gives the impression of it being longer than it actually is.

I've watched a few episodes of Silent Hill: Ascension through a streamer and I'm honestly convinced it was written by AI. They claim it's not, but characters talk past each other, break conversational flow, and just act weird so much it feels like a robot had to have a hand in building something this bad.

Outer Worlds was also rather disappointing for a lot of reasons but compared to Starfield it's golden. I hope the next Outer World game has more RPG depth and more creative ways the player can resolve major conflicts.
Yeah, I played Outer Worlds and had a lot of fun with it, but I hope future examples of the genre do better than that, especially with the publisher's scummy rerelease.

Starfield actually blew my mind. Blew my mind with how dedicated Bethesda is to it's boring hand-holding chosen one plotlines.
They wrote an in universe new game plus mechanic that allows you to hop realities... resetting the game world for a another run- and you still run into NPCs who are "essential" and cannot die because you need to talk to them once during a side quest at some point.
Surely a setting with this premise would have been ripe for allowing players to lock themselves out of quests?- they literally get to reset the universe and not do that next time?
I always agreed with hbomberguy's comment about why they made fallout 3 so easy. They wanted people to be able to go where they pleased when they pleased. They wanted players to explore the world... Starfield doesn't have even a single world that's very interesting, what's there to explore?
I've had a crap Christmas, but watching even just the opening of this video with the hummed/kazoo version of the theme put a smile on my face. Sorry to hear that you're under the weather; I sincerely hope you start feeling better soon.
Why would the Silent Hill devs create two different fully-animated and voiced cutscenes for each "vote" if one of them is never going to be seen, because it lost this "vote"?
This is why I think the "not a vote" thing is literally true and they have already decided which results "win" because it's the cutscene that the devs have already put time, money, and effort into making.
And then the 'pay to win' aspect is not just a money-sucker, but also allows them to avoid accusations of vote-rigging.
