Anthem. Oh, Anthem. BioWare's ill-fated attempt to jump aboard the "live service" bandwagon is yet another cautionary tale the "AAA" industry won't ever learn from.
With an obscenely troubled development, a handful of failed promises, and a legacy of embarrassing headlines, Anthem will go down in history, but not for the reasons BioWare hoped.
It certainly won't be spoke about with the same reverence as Bob Dylan... which is what BioWare actually expected.

Hydro Cannons, because time is a flat circle, it seems.
Anthem is a 2019 game. Sometimes I forget.
I've forgotten more than once, and when the lists for the worst games of the year roll up, I will have forgotten again.
It's so fucked up. I'm really happy I didn't buy it..
A few times when people bring up Anthem it actually makes my brain skip a beat and wonder what year I'm in as I thought it came out last year.
Making me question "Wait, is it really year 2018? Oh crap... it DID come out this year?"
It's definitely in the running for Yahtzee's Blandest Game Award.
Bioware’s response being ‘we don’t like articles that aren’t praise’ is very telling of how games companies view games journalism
I remember that was one of the reasons BioWare shut down the BSN. Whoever decided to do that needs to be fired.
A post-mortem of a game less than a year old.
Welcome to AAA games, kids.
Games? You mean "live services"
Sarasaland Subserviant actually it’s pronounced “TrIpLe A” games
Don't worry they will sell the sequel/remaster/next year game with annual releases. It makes them more money and they barely have to do any programming for it.
@Locust Swarm Anthem may not be technically dead yet, but it's on life support at this point. Live services literally depend on an active user base to keep their servers on, and Anthem doesn't have much of a base left. EA may eventually pull the plug on the game, and unlike Square Enix, they aren't likely to rebuild it from scratch.
Guess failure is also a surprise mechanic.

They didn't even prepare for this game, so HOW WERE THEY GOING TO SUPPORT IT? What a bunch of idiotic morons.

@Jimmy That's the point. It'll be talked about for a really long time _as a huge failure._ As a prime example of the failings of the Live Service model. Quite possibly as the biggest failure and downfall of a once beloved game studio.
@Mi Ke I still have a sliver of hope DA4 will be good, or at least okay. A tiny, very breakable sliver...

It's corporate speak for "we want to make the things that we think are popular at the moment in a style that is popular at the moment, because we believe that trying to keep up with the Joneses is the way to make money."
well, if we break it down, it means....nothing.
contemporary is a word that only has meaning in relation to something else. for example, you and i are contemporaries, because we live at the same time and can interact. saying "i want to tell a contemporary story" is essentially you saying "i want to tell a story that occurs at a time". thanks, mate, so do we all.

How can they learn their lesson when everyone who learned that lesson got fired as soon as the game was finished.
That's an odd remark, considering it never was finished - by design. "Live services" don't get finished, they get abandoned.
The everyday office devs were not responsible nor were they fired over Anthem, they're more likely to get laid off due to budget cuts. The problem with these games is they have no competent leadership at the top- all the good writers and project directors that made Bioware so good early on are gone, replaced by people who only have a mandate to try and copy other successful games and give into EA's whims about the next big thing.
@c-pin Come now they'll all be rehired under new contracts all to be laid off and rehired again for the next game after that. It's fun never having permanent employees. No benefits or workers' rights and if they bitch you can just kick them out the door! It's in the contract on page 87, clause 10.
For real though at this point boiware exists in name only. Anyone significant left years ago.
Idea of having mechs was good but they were so slow and missions were so boring

Destiny clone with jetpacks with one loading screen.
No thanks.
It was the Destiny killer that couldn't even last one year . EA never learns
It wasn't a Destiny clone. It was in fact the Multiplayer mode of Mass Effect Andromeda, with new assets. But, you know, they made sure not to involve the developers that made that mode (the only good part of ME:A and the only people that would know how to make that game), and slapped a tons of bad loot mechanics on top.
I'm serious, they actually confirmed on the record that those devs didn't work on Anthem, as if they were proud to not involve the only people with competency in the area their new game focuses on. Because the game those people were forced to work on before wasn't good in the area they weren't good at (singleplayer). But that's EA logic for you, the same company that cancelled a game for not selling enough - before it got released.
Not even a Destiny clone
@@shorddy1668 Yeah. For all the game's faults, D1 kept me coming back for a good while. Anthem was a game with jetpacks... and I honestly couldn't tell you from trailers what the game was even about.

The part that depresses me the most, is the effect on the development of DA4. After DA Inquisition, the dev leads had worked out a plan for the sequel that took the core game design and improved it further. Then, Bioware came in, gutted the team to shift resources to Anthem. That concept for DA4 was basically thrown out, as team members were lost and replaced. Now, the current form of DA4, is reportedly nothing like the original intent.
That's great news for me. Another game I won't feel obliged to buy for nostalgia reasons. Future Bioware games are dead to me. ME1 and 2 and old dragon age games are Bioware to me. This new thing is Shitware. Don't wanna go anywhere near that steaming pile of crap.

a hyped friend practically begged me to get anthem so me and him could play together, he personally gave me a refound for it out of his own pocket and we went back to gamecube
anthem, makes you cherish the classics
I'm still glad that I didn't cave into my buddy's begging to buy the game despite all those promises for "10-year franchise", "roadmap full of promises", "years of following support", just like your beloved warframe but in the hands of competent devs able to release a polished product that doesn't break after each update'.
A little conflict was worth having because now I can poke fun at those "100% commitment" statements every time he brings up 'I don't support non-AAA products because they are shitty messes with no value because they always fail to calculate risks, timelines and polishment'.

IMO DA2 and ME3 were good too, despite their poor reputations. Each has serious issues of course (the asset reuse and the endings, respectively), but I don't think those issues are enough to make them bad games by any means. And of course ME2 was arguably better than ME1 in many respects.
Frostbite Engine - built specifically for battlefield.

"Anthem is the fifth best-selling game of 2019" - Everyone who bought it, deserved it.
Bet they made their money back too
I didn't mind the game. It was fun, and it would have been fine if they kept releasing story with it. Then at least you would have easily, at least, been able to get your money's worth out of it. If they had released the other acts before dropping support it would have been "fine", and maybe salvageable. But with the dropping of the roadmap, I don't understand their thought process.
I enjoyed it for the 25-30 hours I put into it
even now there are parts i think are novel about it, its just the low player base, the lack of any drive to fix it, and all the worst parts of live service without any of the good that keep me from installing again.
You get it for free if subscribed to Origin.
Fixing the "loot shower" was very instructive, they wanted to keep the grind, maintain user engagement. For some reason "live services" rely on this dull, job-like environment.

Damn dude. Respect.
Compare the lifespan of a “live service” game like Anthem to a single-player sandbox like Skyrim. Not even a year later and Anthem’s player base has already long abandoned it. Skyrim is pushing a decade since its release and continues to draw players back, all without the “live” components that are meant to serve that very purpose
This goes to show that the logic of “live service” is a lie. These publishers don’t want to bring value and longevity to the game as a way to serve players, despite their reiteration of this very talking point. In actuality, they want to extract every last cent of money from a IP as long as a player base is still actively engaged with it. We more or less heard Todd Howard and Bethesda admit this to be the case when they explained the motivation for making Fallout 76. They saw this massive fan base engaged with the incredible game they created, but sales of the game itself weren’t good enough. A “live service” allows the publisher to dip into the reserves of the same player base repeatedly, rather than pushing them to to make money. The profit motive which once encouraged devs and publishers to innovate and sell new experiences to players has been exploited in favor of stagnation
Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I don’t foresee this model of game production being sustainable for much longer. Look no further than EA as evidence of how unsustainable this has been. Over the course of a console generation, they have exploited every single one of their IP’s (Need For Speed, FIFA, Star Wars Battlefront, Battlefield, etc.). The value of these IP’s has quickly been diminished as players notice the quality of the game has been sacrificed in the name of profitability. If publishers want to preserve the value of their IP’s, they will have to earn respect back from the consumer.
it's not going to die off any time soon. the triple-a companies are pretty much only in it for money. they hype everyone up, convince people they've changed, get everyone super excited and holding their hands out for the bright new shiny thing... and then the company takes a big shit right in your hands.
and then people wait a few months, the companies start to hype everyone up and convince them they've changed, and it won't be like last time (as they gorge themselves on cheap mexican street stand burritos...)

Skyrim doesn’t need a live service model to sustain itself. Not with all the ports, of course. How much do you wanna bet that Bethesda will have PS5 and Xbox Scarlet ports of Skyrim?
I do love how much you hate the term “live service”.
How can ANYONE not hate Live Service? I will never play any such game.
this game was a litmus test to see if people would buy the crap out of shit games and they will so now EA is only going to allow game companies to make shit games and push them out faster and faster and people will keep buying them because apparently these days people are fucking stupid. After the "No Man's Sky" fiasco I never preordered games with over hyped trailers, even more so if they are from EA.
Hell, at the very least Hello Games managed to pull their heads from their asses and actually work to improve their game, free of additional charge. They've put out 7 major updates for free (as they should) that turned the game into something that's actually enjoyable. They fucked up, hugely, but they're atoning, and I respect them for that.
EA, BioWare and other major developers and publishers have learned nothing. They seem intent on reacting to any criticism in what is scientifically determined to be the worst possible response. They continue to spit in our collective faces, while holding out their hands and expecting you to put money in their palms.

Because I know nothing of what I see will actually be the game. I then just wait for gameplay to happen, if it ever does. Failing that I wait the months for them to deign to show us how the game actually plays.
Something I'm surprised Jim didn't mention was after that initial reveal trailer with the BS voice chat, most of the dev team at Bioware went "Oh...so THAT'S what we're supposed to be making." because until then no-one had a goddamn clue. Because management had never given them one.
