  • In my opinion the best of Joan of Arc movies. Quite funny at times and Mila Jojovich did stellar job on this one.

Hardly anyone noticed here that the only reason Joan ordered the attack on Tourelles was because that's the only thing she could name on the map. Remember, she is illiterate, Luc Besson portrayed that many times, and few seconds before this scene, right before she approaches the table, Joan is watching Dunois pointing at the castle miniature and calling it Tourelles in response to La Hire. So naturally, that was the only place she could point to without sounding clueless. I was obsessed with this movie as a teen because it was so genuine and thorough, watched it more than 1000 times. Incredible attention to subtle details like these permeate the whole movie from the beginning to end. A true masterpiece.
Another scene that many didn't understand is when French faced English army at St. Laurent field, when John Talbot orders archers into firing position that's followed by cavalry turning back and ending in a complete retreat. Talbot wasn't ready to fight the French, he gave the order to archers to see if the French were bluffing or not, but when he saw that the French are willing to fight, he retreated. Although it wasn't common practice, many territories were won by unwilling armies simply by bluffing the enemy.

I have such a love/hate relationship with this movie.
They get some minor details that only historians would get right, like certain quotes Jean says
"Let all those who love me, follow me!"
and I really like how good the armor looks, even though some are stylized to either show off a character trait (La Hire's spiky armor)
I also love action in the battle scenes, and some of Mila's acting. Also the minor characters are FUN. Jean's band of knights are FUN TO WATCH.
There are many memeable moments in this film. "I'M TIRED OF TAKING HER ORDERS. LOOK. LOOK A THIS MESS. THAT'S HER MESS NOT MINE."
That said...their portrayal of Jean and many other characters feels like they were maligned.
They have the historical sources, it's obvious they did their homework. So..why try to make Jean look crazy rather than inflamed with passion.

      Well said.
To answer your question - and I'm only speculating - I think it's because of "executive" order - money being the main driver. I think they though it would attract more audience.

It's also a matter of perspective. Some might conclude that Joan of Arc was afflicted with what we today would call schizophrenia.

If it’s constructive we call it love.
If it’s destructive we call it madness.

They didn't have TV in those times and they didn't take selfies . Mostly they didn't even had mirrors . I think the behavior is mostly accurate . You should read " The distant Mirror " by Barbara Tuchman , to get an impression of how weird and irrational people in that time period behaved . Why do you focus on the negative impressions ? My guess is , because this movie is overall far superior to all of your favorite movies . You just can't identify with the character . Creating senseless and instant identification is the ticket for every average movie hero .
Maybe they just wanted to make it more difficult for you .

Historians have pointed out that this movie is nonsense on virtually all levels, especially its portrayal of Joan as an angry, out-of-control Valley Girl (in stark contrast to the numerous eyewitnesses who described her as pretty much the opposite), and the portrayal of her visions (which bear no resemblance whatsoever to what she actually described) and her rejection of her mission at the end (which is contradicted by eyewitnesses at her execution who said she still maintained the validity of her visions until the end). The film also erroneously portrays her judge (Pierre Cauchon) as a conscientious, neutral person who tried to save her despite the patent fact that he was an advisor to the English occupation government who was described by eyewitnesses as a corrupt judge who convicted her on deliberately false charges and ordered the transcript to be falsified on important points. The dialogue throughout much of the movie sounds like something out of an amateur production (complete with modern obscenities that weren't used in that era).

Luc besson is a man without faith who has no transcendence, totally disrespectful concerning the history, this explains the fiasco of this film which treats Joan as a hysterical and anxious warrior and not as a devoted missionary of God. This film is a piece of shit.

@@crackshack2 Please don't tell me that you think "occupation" is word used exclusively with nazis, or for present age. i love the French knights. this is what these aristocrat types are like, they are so detached from reality they have strange senses of humour and concepts of danger. i like the battle scenes in this movie because they show how the heavily armoured elites (who were probably always much bigger and stronger since they could eat more food) would probably just plow through the less armoured peasants (who had no training).
imagine you're born truly believing you are superior - and *actually* being very superior in many ways - and then think of how you'd feel about battles. you'd probably be joking around too

    • @akSeR2010
      @akSeR2010 2 года назад +1

Two major faults with your reasoning. Knights were always better trained and more heavily armoured. The begun their training in their fist adolescent years after all. But they were an expensive minority in the whole army. It was not just their aristocratic lineage that made them arrogant. It was their belief in their superior fighting skills. Just like the US Rangers are arrogant in front of a regular army soldier. As for the "less armoured peasants who had no training", this is just a historical fallacy created in the post medieval period. No medieval proper army had "untrained peasants". Not from the good of the Lord's heart of course. But beacuse they were a hindrance. Imagine yourself in the thick and terror of battle. Every human sense in you would scream to to get the fuck out of there. Who stays there, despite the perfectly human rationale? Trained soldiers. If you put an "untrained peasant" there, he will flee, the line will break, a complete rout will emerge. The battle fucked. So a commander would never think of ever putting an untrained peasant, holding a pitchfork, in a battle, as the popular image goes.

Milla Jovovich's portrait of Joan of Arc is borderline psychotic. Who would follow someone like that?
Contrast that, interestingly enough, with Leelee Sobieski's version which is near passionless. Who would follow someone like that?
Is there an actual GOOD Joan of Arc movie that is interesting and doesn't portray her as either insane or a wet blanket?

If Joan really did turn back the English army like that it wouldn’t matter to her military followers whether she was downright cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. Once again if she could get the job done ie get results then they and anyone else would gladly follow her on the victory lap.

1 ) Yolande d'Anjou had sent fresh troops, mercenaries and lots of supplies,
she was the ''angular stone'' in this operation, not the Dauphin...
she even paid for Charles' army ...
2 ) the Scottish troops had already attacked the English convoy of supplies from Paris to Orléans,
at Rouvray, the Scots when in first, however, the French retreated....
      3) Jehanne la Pucelle's arrival to improve the morale especially after a series of first defeats
      4) they were using Ogham church bells coding system to find out the movement of English troops
around Orléans, since the English had to move them around often, not enough troops.
      5) the English made a series of errors at the siege of Orléans, also at St Loup the English had only 400 troops against the 1500 French troops ....
      6) The Scots troops played an important role ...
      7) the weather / wind on the Loire River
      8) the French used gunpowder more effectively than the English...
