- Baker's Cyst: Overview and Imaging
#What is a Baker's Cyst?
A Baker's cyst, or popliteal cyst, is a fluid-filled sac in the popliteal fossa behind the knee, often resulting from knee joint conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or meniscal tears.
Ultrasound and Color Doppler Findings
*Ultrasound:
- Appears as an anechoic or hypoechoic fluid collection.
- May show septations or internal echoes if complex or hemorrhagic.
- A neck may be seen connecting the cyst to the knee joint.
*Color Doppler:
- Typically shows no internal vascularity.
- Increased peripheral vascularity might indicate inflammation or nearby synovial activity.
Differential Diagnoses
- Popliteal artery aneurysm: Pulsatile with arterial flow on Doppler.
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Hypoechoic mass within the vein, non-compressible with altered Doppler flow.
- Ganglion cysts: Non-communicating with the joint, more anterior.
- Synovial sarcoma: Solid mass with heterogeneous echotexture and internal blood flow on Doppler
