I remember going to see this movie on a whim. I was bored and decided to go to the movies by myself. This was the best surprise movie I have ever seen. I just wasn't ready for how fun it would be.
The sense I get is nobody was ready for how good this was. It was supposed to be a cheesy parody of Star Trek, and perhaps unintentionally ended up as an excellent movie in its own right.
I remember I was in fifth grade and I was at a restaurant with my parents across from a mall with a discount theater where they showed movies for 3 dollars that had passed their run at the regular theater. We randomly decided to go see Galaxy Quest and I have not stopped rewatching it since. "Is there air!? You don't know!!" 😂

Most of the Star Trek cast that saw this movie were laughing their heads off! This was a BRILLIANT parody of Star Trek, and a great movie in its own right.
Sarris made the most basic mistake that a Commander Officer can make. Never underestimate your enemy no matter who or what they are, because you never know what kind of nasty surprise they may have for you.
Going off the timeline? it even fits the even/odd pattern (Insurrection preceeded it by a year,) which... well looking at Nemesis a couple years after? Yep. this is the trek film that proved the pattern correct.

Easily the best exchange in a film of all time. One moment the main thing carrying the film is its beautiful CGI, music, and its intensity, but then Tim Allen rocks our worlds with this incredible display of his acting abilities against a tyrannical military general who is fully ready to kill all of them, and he does with such finesse and fluidity, it's absolutely flawless. Such an amazing display of meta-acting.
Reminds me of my early morning commute on 2-lane roads where I never exceed the speed limit. By the time I get to a traffic light, I'm dragging at least 5 or 6 "mines" behind me. Drive safe.
One thing I can't decide on: Do the Thermians laugh about the "deception" because they are finally starting to understand entertainment, or do they think Jason only said that to deceive Sarris?
The Thermians stated that they live entirely by the Historical Documents. Knowing that Jason has a success rate of 100%, they could have surrendered and still would have doubled down believing it was all part of the ruse.
I was wondering when I first saw this too. My conclusion is that based off the look that Mathesar gives Jason before the ship splits, he knew, but said that to keep rest of the Thermians in the dark
To be honest, the other officers under Sarris's command don't seem like they're actually that bad, like when one of them expresses concern over sending his men on a ship that's about to self-destruct, but Sarris angrily overrules him, makes me wonder if they're not in a similar situation to the Thermians, ordinarily peaceful beings that are being held hostage by a blood-thirsty space warlord.
@@singletona082 Maybe it was a Germany after WW1 type situation, they'd lost a massive intergalactic war and were forced to pay extortionate reparations, which then gave the opportunity for people like Sarris to take advantage of their discontent and thus drag them into another pointless conflict for his own ends.
you know, its funny to realize that in the Entire movie, the protector never fires its own weapons XD like we get HEARD of weapons being used or being ordered TO use... but never once do we see them, not even in the few TV Show Scene's shown... the Protector is apparently main trait is toughening it out, from weapons Fire to Magnetic mines through out the movie

But didn't Nesmith do exactly that on his first trip to the Protector by firing ALL the ships weapons and throwing an empty soda can at "o'l lobster-head"?

I will say Seth MacFarlane seems to finally be getting it. The third season of The Orville was actually pretty good (much better than the first season) - maybe he actually watched this movie to better understand how to make a good parody. Ironically Star Trek had to return to it roots to finally give us a decent new series - Strange New Worlds and the third season of Picard (which is really just the 8th season of Next Gen).
Such a good idea. They should make a Star Trek movie where Kirk takes the Enterprise into some kind of electro-magnetic nebula field, to even the odds with his enemy by messing with their tracking abilities.
Jason really learned during the course of this film. He started out way in over his head not knowing what he was doing, then here he became a capable commander using his brains to destroy Serishes ship. He took the ship down not using weapons but by dragging mines. Clever.
My adult sons could not understand why I love this movie. I must've screened it at least a dozen times before I got the the DVD. This scene is so stirring you almost forget the movie is a spoof.
The late great Norm MacDonald brilliantly pointed out that you can't make a true parody or impersonation unless you love the original. That is at the heart of good satire. The reason Galaxy Quest is one of the greatest comedies ever made is because it *embraces* Star Trek culture rather than mocking it maliciously. Of course fun is made of all the ridiculous aspects, but the trekkie-equivalents are the *heroes* of the story rather than the objects of scorn. It's one instance where American-style comedy (where the protagonists are the heroes rather than the losers, like in British comedy) really shines.
The Reptoids are reptilian, all you would have to do is take out their heating units on thier ships. It is supposed to be that all Reptiles are Cold-Blooded. If they get too cold, they can't move.
And there is a small part of me that wonders if Star Trek (2009) had Spock fly the red matter into the heart of the Roman ship with a last minute beam out as an homage to GQ!!!!!

Jason's mine-dragging tactic was improvised, innovative, and deadly effective. Playing a captain turned him into one.

This is one of the most 'fun' sci-fi movies ever made. Even though it's an action/comedy, it's not campy or cringe, and the stakes are real

What's great about this scene is that as exciting as two ships playing chicken is, the true climax of the movie is everyone falling into their roles.
