Fabricating Toyota Tacoma Rock Sliders and Installing a Roof Top Tent! (even though I hate them)

- In this video we make some rock sliders for my 2003 Toyota Tacoma and also build a cool roof top tent rack. This isn't really a tutorial, it also isn't a vlog, so I guess just enjoy it as you will.
Head on over to Instagram and give me a follow @mikes4x4garage !
honestly if you dropped some merch id cop a tee
^^^^
Same here
Same!
Same
Merch has to say “Twice the amount of work, half the quality” (5:15) lol
Hey Mike, one thing I added to my sliders is some skateboard grip tape. Put a strip on top where your feet might go on both sides. Gives you a little traction getting in, or standing on the sliders to wash the windshield and roof, etc. Plus I have a roof rack with other junk. Just a thought.
When you build the rear bumper build a receiver hitch for a bike mount. This truck is coming along nicely.
For sure!
@@mikes4x4garageall pro had a sweet taco bumper you could look at for inspiration. I had one on my 01 taco. Wish I still had it
You should fabricate a knockoff 1up.
Crazy to think you only have 30k subs.. with the quality of the videos and the knowledge you have, you’ll be up to 100k + soon
I drive a lowered Japanese car, yet here I am. Keep up the great content.
Will do!
I was a lover of the RTT, got a nice CVT to fit my family of 4. Ended up hating it after using it for 4 seasons lol. Got rid of it and went eazy up ground tent. Now it takes longer to setup camp, but at least I have a home base I can drive off and return back to.
You make it look so easy. I love it. Painted and everything. I've been impressed with your channel for a while now. Makes me wanna get an old used Tacoma for a project.
I mount my mountain bike behind the rear window, across the bed. I agree with the RTT. Plus, you get to camp and want to go wheeling, have to pack it all up to do anywhere.
So sick!! Love watching someone make it happen on their own, esp in this hobby where it’s easy to fall into getting “the best of the best”
i got a roof top tent, but i did it different then most. i got a HF trailer and built a rack so i can still haul dirt bikes and quads with the roof top tent and still have the full bed ready to go. Another reason for doing this is so i could have the tent set up and still go off on trails without unpacking my camp site and setting back up again the next night. and now i love RTTs!
Your welds are looking great! Much improved from the 3rd gen build, awesome progress man! 🙌
They’ve gotten a little better but not much 😂
Make cage for inside the cab only so you can mount the tent on the roof when going camping with toys that need to fill the bed! You could run the mounting bolts rt through the roof. Keep the clean look!
You definitely built those better than most kits, looks great!
Thanks 👍
perfect explanation of my DIY projects, "twice the effort/half the quality"
😂😂😂
The painters tape is the cherry on top for this video “chefs kiss”
You the man, Mike! Keep the content coming. Love the honesty and realism.
Thank you!
Damn dude love to see you hit 30k. well deserved with the quality of the videos so far.
About falling out, Make a aluminum flip over slide for the ladder.. climb up, slide down..LOL
Gosh those sliders look amazing!!!
Thank ya! They came out pretty good!
Congrats on 30k, Keep the Toyota content coming!
Will do !
Mike, you're a beast. Keep up the good work, I always look forward to the Tacoma build vids
Rig is looking awesome! Nice work man
Thank you!
Mike, I like how the truck is coming out hopefully you keep this one . Keep the videos coming !
I watch a lot of RUclips but don’t tent to interact with creators. First channel I have ever subscribed to.
love these videos, inspires me to work on my 1st gen, keep it up🤝
Get a tailgate pad for you bike issue with the RTT. When I made my own RTT mount I made it just the perfect height to where I could put bikes in n out of the tailgate while also having my tent
I didn’t think of that. I’ll have to see if it’d work
Without falling out of the roof top tent, was to go down the same way you went up, I don't have a rrt, but I had a tailgate assist ladder, I fell off when I went down the opposite way..
Could move the RTT over, and build a bike mount on the rack.
I might do that soon. The rear bumper will have a hitch though
Looking forward to your bumper build!
Coming soon!
Lmao Mike, I love the customer sticker shirt!!! When is the merch dropping!?
you are so good at this kind of thing that you make it look easy which it is not. congrats on your channel growing, you do really cool stuff and some times you think out of the box like you did on the jeep after you rolled it and it looks really cool
Hey thank you!
Build yourself a vertical hitch rack for the mtb like the velocirax 👍🏻
Add an attachment for a bike rack opposite the tent entry. Just one of those full length tray type bike racks.
I think I’m just going to make a rear bumper and use a hitch rack
Loving the build and watching all the ideas come together man. Look forward to what comes next!
Thanks for watching it!
I’m considering getting a roof tent, this video was god sent
The plates that you weld onto the frame for your sliders, you should make them the shape of a house instead of square. The local rock slider guy told me it’s easier to weld onto the frame. So you weld the plat onto the slider first then you weld the plate onto the frame after
Ya otherwise you can't weld all the way around the pipe section that hooks to the frame.
Yeah I had a rtt for about a year.
Hated that I looked like I was going camping everyday lol.
Also things are easy to steal and you make your self a target.
So I built a trailer out of half a Datsun truck.
But to your point. How about making q/r mounts so you can just take off the setup when needed.
It looks like it weighs maybe 125 lbs total.
Just a thought.
Nothing but high quality DIY here
Can you slide the roof top tent (RTT) to the passenger side (passenger side to offset the weight of the driver left:right) and then make a bike mount on the bed bars that has some sort of front fork lockdown and a cradle for the rear tire? The bike mounts could be removable too, or changed to some other kind of mount (kayak, snowboard, whatever). Obviously does not solve the issue for dirt bikes.
Nice build, is it feasible to push the tent/mount forward a bit closer to the rear of the cab? That should open up more vertical bed space for bikes ect…? Granted I’m OCD too and like the symmetry of things centered 😅
Just found your channel! Nice job! I have the same feelings you do about a roof top tent. I'm the only one I know in my area that has a Tacoma without a roof top tent on it.
Check out some videos on how to cope tube with your abrassive saw. I think I saw Dirthead Dave do it first. Quick n Easy! Congrats on 30K. Keep it up.
I’ll have to check it! Thanks man!
Another great one Mike! 🤙🏼
Broooooo should have let me know! I have all the measurements to the T!!!! As always keep up the work fam. And good to see you properly hydrated for this video man. Cheers!
Cheers!
Truck is really looking sick now, man!
Thank ya!
dope merch in the opening shot
That’s just my t shirt with painters tape on it 😂
You're all ready for those double black diamond mall trails now HAHAHAHA. kidding aside, I know several people with RTT and most only use 3-4 times a year with one of those times being at the overland expo. i'd personally rather waste the bed with long travel suspension, spare tires & bed cage. but to each their own. its their money, not mine... who am I to judge.
Exactly 😂 but hey I’ll try it
Been here since 3K subs! HUUUUGE congrats
Thank you !
Since you are fabricating everything anyway, make the tent store on its side (vertically) with a mechanism where you can flip it down into a horizontal position and use it. Then you can slide the bikes right in next to it.
Dude I hate on rooftop tents too but I also low key want to try it out, you should make an over landing vid of testing out the rig!
Yeah I’ll give it a go!
my back hurt from watching you crouch down like that while you were welding lmao! But that came out so nice! Next time you need help let me know! I'll come up from Monterey!
My back hurts too
Truck is looking amazing can't wait to see it wheeling
Yeah I’m sure it’ll party
Man has his priorities straight. Keep the camping setup cheap and save the money for a nice Santa Cruz 🤙 you mentioned doing an mtb road trip last year - still in the cards?
Yes indeed! I’m planning on going this fall. Too hot right now 🥵
Looks amazing!
I feel like altering the angle of the attachment pieces strengthens the slider so it can take harder hits. Good job tho
Always looking forward to seeing your vids
Thank you for watching!
NICE Job Bro!!!
You need Hitch bike rack! Come to racknroad in San Jose
Drill a hole big enough for the mounts and a small slit to slide it around on the bed lines . OR spray the bed as well. Bed liners are your worst enemy
Love the name tags 🤣😂 keep it up bro.
Love the build man. What type of bronze wheels are those? Keep the content coming
Keep it up! Glad you're getting more subs!
Thank you!
Ahhh my favorite Californian posted
The truck looks great!
Jaba the nut du wanga, nice build
Yuh
Sick taco bro
Truck is looking wicked!
Thank you!
Did you come into a whole batch of bed liner material? Why you rocking the Tupperware? 😉
I did!
Dude If Im honest, I dont even like off road and 4x4 stuff, but youre one of the only channels I keep notifications on for. Keep making good content. Makes me want to work on my projects
Thank you !
Mike love your shit so much. I’m also currently building some sliders for my Land Cruiser but I’m going with a bolt system to the frame instead of welding them on. How come you decided to weld them on? Just wondering
Thumbs up for "twice the amount of effort and half the quality"
Love it man need to build me some like that
Hey thanks for the great content man.
Get merch that says, "Twice amount of effort, half the quality"
Coming!
30k 🎆🎇🎆 congrats
Thank you 🙌
Looks killer mike! Currently waiting for more mustang content
I’m going to post up on Instagram this week with an update!
Looks dope though
LETS GO BRO FINALLY KEEP POSTING MAN
"I hate rooftop tents." Welcome to the Darkside lol, Taco overlanding. AT least you have a garage you can hook up a pulley system and take off the tent and your rack when not using it in the winter. "Food for thought."
How many beers was it to build the sliders? Looks like an 8 beer rating to me.
You gotta make some mikes 4x4 koozies!!! Those would be sick!!!! 🍻
I want some too! I should!
Curious why you didn't go with bolt on sliders? I would think having them bolt on would allow you to easily weld all the way around the pipe that hooks to the flat steel that hooks to the frame. I've been watching a few builds on sliders and that's how Nate from Dirt Lifestyle did his.
I had no problem getting a full weld around it. I like the weld on because they’re easier to make, and stronger.
@@mikes4x4garage You were able to fit the torch on the top? What happens if they get damaged and need to be repaired/repainted? Is your plan just to cut them off and weld them back up?
You definitely need end caps on those sliders. Water is gonna get in there and it'll corrode like a bitch.
Other than that, they look stellar. The old taco looks amazing, man
They have them, and thanks!
Would love some Miata Content
Miata content!!
you said you didn't want to sandwich the bedliner but you did? i don't think it's an issue, but you didnt show us what you ended up doing to mount it to the bed.
Is that a new merch tee? 👀
Fill them with concrete and make them really strong.. Close the Ends so it cannot break out..
Those would be heavy!
@@mikes4x4garage
Yea.... Anything would help... papercrete?
Overland vids coming up next??
Some time soon!
Great channel!
Glad you enjoy it!
The guys that can't afford a RTT hate on them until they can afford one! 👍Enjoy!
Lets go! 100k here we come!!!!
Let’s go!
Solid video as always
We all dream of 12”
Another awesome video!!!
5:21 in and no beer?
Wow I am so surprised! 18:05 you crack the beer open! I can believe you fab'd up sliders and a roof rack, sober!
lets go mike!
Let’s goooo
The con of all rooftops is taking a piss..! I hate it haha
Did you fabricate that swing out bumper for the jeep? If so. Is there a video?
That bumper is from Filthy Addictions Off-road. However I’m going to be making a bumper for the Tacoma pretty much the same.
Just letting everyone know. The top bar on metal fences is 1.75 .120 wall hrew. I built my sliders on my s10 out of fence my neighbor threw out.
Probably galvanized though right?
@@mikes4x4garage yup. Why does that matter. They welded great, paint sticks, they were free and they allow me to pivot around trees.
@@Austinandjules hey good on you, look up welding galvanized steel though. It will create zinc fumes which are very unhealthy for you and you can get very sick. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Sweet truck! Did he sell his 3rd gen??
I did!
@@mikes4x4garage nice man! Love the channel!
