Honestly, one of my favorite memories was a really simple one.
Playing the MCC, halo 3 - I had two marines follow me for a long time on one level. Forgot which one. They were with me basically the whole time.
It was roughly 2/3 the way through the level, and one of the two died. After the fight, the other one went up to the corpse and said something like “Don’t worry, I’ll make them pay.” Or something like that.
Not long later, found a sniper rifle. I gave it to him, and he took out a handful of brutes before getting hit with a plasma grenade, and then running into a grunt before it went off.
I honestly felt kinda sad, but in the end, he did avenge his buddy.

yup 4 years old i fell in love with halo, now 19 years later and the humor gets to me even more and makes me love the OG halo games for what they really were, a fun power fantasy with a deep heart wrenching story.
I remember playing halo reach and seeing that massive civilian transport go down for the first time and not really caring much "its just more crap in the way of letting me shoot things" was my basic mentality back then, then going back to it as an adult the entire scene provokes the overwhelming feeling of what can only be described as just a shocked "oh...fuck." and that line about not bothering to rescue the survivors just adds to the hopelessness of the entire story at that point.

He also has all the realistic abilities you would expect to see from an Australian, but are normally not included outside of Team Fortress 2, such as being very hard to kill. This is an important skill for somebody growing up in a dangerous country that wants to kill you. Planet got glassed? No worries mate, just TP to the PoA. Dying on 04? Yeah naaaah, just TP to Earth. Need to fight on Earth and follow Master Chief to 05? You guessed it, TP from Earth to a cryo pod of the FUD, then back to Earth just in time for Halo 3.

    "Guess nobodys home"
After the battle initiated, and the first soldier fell, I was fighting hard with legendary level forces, it became insanely difficult and out of the corner of my eye I see it. A plasma coming at me. An unnamed marine rolled in front of me and stood, taking the plasma and diving towards an elite. He killed the final elite, and saved my life. So for some reason, the marine that joins you on the scarab fight in The Ark has always had a place in my heart. When my friend and I would play that level, I fell in love with his badass Australian accent. I named him Xander, and he became an important buddy for us. When he died, we would avenge him with righteous fury. I still call him Xander in my playthroughs to this day. Halo has always done an incredible job of making you care for its NPC’s, it’s part of why you care about the story and stakes in the campaign. Still, Xander will always feel like a close friend to me. He’s partly why The Ark is my favorite Halo level ever.

The only games I can think of that had intelligent AI like CE is half life one, for its one of *The* core focuses of the game. 2 improved upon a lot of aspects in terms of combat however quite a bit of the finer details that the first had for the sake of time had to be cut, but bad map design and worse balancing sabotaged it to all hell. And finally Alyx, as it goes back to half life ones philosophy but thanks to the technology of our time it demonstrates how *Good* it can be and how fun it is to fight an enemy that understands you, and you understand it.
      Also infinite is kinda OK.

Me and my buddy like to play Halo 3 in what we call "Terminator mode" where we just kill everyone, marines included. The namesake comes from a certain part of "The Storm" (halo 3) where after defeating the scarab you walk through a marine F.O.B. to get to the next arena. This little segue serves as an interesting little combat encounter, with the entrenched marines actually posing a significant threat. Once their defensive posture is broken, they basically rout as if they were facing the covenant, creating a set-piece similar to that one part of every Schwarzenegger movie.
So yeah Halo 3 has the best-lookin marines and my favorite to fight.

I'll never forget the one Marine who offered you a lift to board both of the Scarabs in Halo 3's "The Covenant." He swoops in, picks you up, drops you off onto the Scarab on the left and keeps the fight going in the air until you've finished destroying the first one, and then swoops down and picks you back up to bring the hurt on the second Scarab. If I'm not mistaken, even after you've destroyed both Scarabs, he'll pick you up again and fly you over to where you have to meet up with the Arbiter and Spark, and after dropping you off again, he'll fly away to finish sweeping out the stragglers.
That's the hardest-working, most dedicated and professional Marine I've ever met in all my years of playing Halo. And I hope to god he's since retired, and lives to tell his family and loved ones that he was the man who personally let Chief loose onto two Covenant super-tanks, because the man's more than earned it for that commitment.

Fun fact the name leatherneck came from the first US Marines that fought Muslim Pirates in North Africa that kept stealing and selling people off as slaves or for ransom. Since then Marines have always been dubbed leathernecks

    • @andymac4883
      @andymac4883 2 года назад +28

A neat story, but the term more likely originates from the leather stocks that were a part of the uniforms of US Marines, Royal Marines (who to this day are still nicknamed 'bootnecks') and British Army redcoats of the 18th-19th centuries. The stock, that was indeed a piece of thick leather that went around the neck, was intended to improve the military bearing of enlisted men by forcing them to keep their chins up, though for obvious reasons they were _extremely_ unpopular with those same enlisted men.

Favorite memories of the marines have been long fought battles to get as many as possible to the end of a mission, and if they died right before the end going full anakin on enemies and their corpses. I’ve also spent a lot of time throughout the franchise weapon swapping trying out different outfits and getting the squad as varied as possible. If I had more than 5 friendlys, that was a lot of time spent back tracking looking for different weapons.
Though maybe outdated in today’s technology, I still very much enjoy fighting alongside the CE marines.
Another thing to note in Halo 2 (though it is entirely possible I’m imagining this) is battle damage. I vaguely remember on various play throughs of H2 encountering a live marine on Cairo with a bloodied face.
I do like the banter and dialogue that Infinite marines have, and also the range they can now engage at.
My only note would be when covering Halo 3, a few shots of the H3 ODST marines couldn’t have hurt, even if there were no noticeable differences. Otherwise, thank you for this trip down memory lane, and the informative breakdown to the friendly troops I’ve fought alongside most of my life. ❤❤❤

In my 20 years of playing halo I can say without any shred of doubt that the reason some missions are so enjoyable and possible to complete Truth and Reconciliation, Outskirts and Metropolis being noteworthy examples is the marines that you either run into or follow you they are not to be underestimated especially when you take the time to outfit them with weapons they can be quite the steam roller provided you can keep most of them alive. My best memories with them are the scattered remnants of marines you find in Halo Reach's The Pillar of Autumn mission there is just something special of fighting of the overwhelming covenant with your comrades that makes that mission so enjoyable.

Damn, that's look like an actual cutscene. I like all of those moments with actual gameplay that looks like a machinima

How a player treats their marines tells a lot about their character. When i was growing up, I played a lot of halo with my brother, who would slaughter the marines & laugh about it, much to my dismay. 20 years later & he's a violent homeless drug addict. Truly a psychological experience of all time

what I would love for the marines in future games or dlcs to have is camo. I play with gmod halo npcs and the reach marines have woodland, urban, desert and naval camo (my favorite) Honestly it would be so cool if there was some naval combat and the marines all had cool blue camo with the halo wars 1 marine design.

amazing video as always. the music, editing, and especially use of theatre mode machinima for b roll is amazing. well written and well spoken.
the marines are a huge part of the gameplay experience. my favorite mission with them has to be the storm on h3 or maybe crows nest. they were great in all games and missions but h3 was the best imo for the reasons you talk about. h3 did such a good job of using the whole sandbox, large scale battles, etc and the marines are the cherry on top.i love how many random things they can possibly say. IWHBYD skull makes it even better.
its also so cool michelle rodriguez, pretty famous, has her imprint on halo

I wish that you covered all the different uniform in halo 4 in more detail like you did in the other games. Some on the halo 4 marines look like the classic Marines.

Man that Halo Reach Exodus music goes hard when you showed the Army Troopers. I miss that somber feeling in Halo 😢

There’s two types of people in the world, those who’d kill marines for weapons/ammo and those who’d keep them alive at all costs.

The UNSC allies were always some of my favorite AI NPC's in games. I remember obsessing over keeping them alive, they were so lifelike that I didn't want any of them dying during my campaign playthrough's when I was young

I want to petition for Pete Stacker, the voice of Captain Keyes and Gunnery Sargent Stacker, to come back as the Sargent himself for future games, Halo is in desperate need of it's UNSC marine heroes. After the Death of Johnson, Stacker would be a fan favorite character that could easily make a comeback.

So there's a bit of a fun fact about halo infinite's marines, you actually CAN kill them if you dump around 15-20 mags of the arcane sentinel beam into them, so they just have heaps of health when shot with friendly fire (either that or the arcane beam is just bugged), which is still pretty lame compared to the other games, but it's still a cool little fact.

My favorite/ worst memory of the marines was my attempt at LASO’ing halo 3 with 3 other buds. The mission Crow’s nest was where we met the full wrath of the marines’ grenades. Halfway through the mission where you clear out the hangar, the fiends in greens thought it would be cool to lob grenades every 3 seconds. This naturally led to us being blown up over and over, and we were stuck at that checkpoint for hours until, by a stroke of good luck, we completed the mission. It only took us 4.5 hours.

To be honest the halo 3 marines are my personal favorites, it’s just the sci fi anime militaristic looks to them whilst being grounded in reality where it could be an actual set of armor
