  • AbeBooks visited Russell Books in Victoria, Canada, and asked them to explain what they looked for when acquiring a used book to sell in their shop or online.
Each morning, people bring boxes of books - sometimes as many as a thousand books - to the bookshop and staff sort through them. Some books are selected and bought. Others are returned to their owner. In this video Russell's manager, Andrea, explains what she looks for when selecting books for their bookshop.

I try to go for the trade credit, it's a win-win: the store gets more inventory and I get to trade up. Typically a book I trade is one I bought for $1 or less at a yard sale or other used market. A store might offer me $2 in cash, but $5 in trade. $5 trade credit gets me a book that was $10-15 new. So, I basically turn $1 into $10-15 in book purchasing, cool!

My only issue with this book is that it's too short! I wanted to see the whole process, how they add it to the database and decide where to put it and maybe check a few more boxes. I dunno why but it's so satisfying

Yes, I would love to get $4 per book, but I get much less or most of my books returned. I certainly don't blame a seller rejecting books
because of subject. Friday a whole box was rejected because just one had a little mold. So I dropped them off at a book sale Friday night, which I attended sat. morning: just one of my books was selling for $20! (the rest were most likely $2 or less)

$4 a book is a lot for trade-in. Today, a big used bookstore might give you 10 percent of what they're going to sell it for - so 50-70 cents.

I wish people would, if you're going to sell and not keep your book please do not write and highlight in the book, I want to read the writer's words, not the last reader's opinions and highlighted favorite passages.

agreed. Don't write in the bloody books. Unless it's a text book, which I guess is fine.

Unless you yourself bought it used and resold it. You could make a profit if you find one in good condition.

How do you limit credit sales? Is it a minimum of 30 dollars before custom can use half credit?

I got lots of 2nd hand booms at home. Sadly I could not purchase more than what I can. :-( Just wanna share a thought here. There is post looking for sales personnel selling used books. I saw it, of coure, several times but should I apply to it? Well, always buy books on their stores and looking at reading books whenver I go there. As a book worm my answer is a BIG NO! Cuz it would be such a crazy job that wanna buy many of hose books. XD. But are the sales personnel allowed to buy? Can they reserve the book/s they like? How about on that store?

It's a risk that it might not sell either. Check out Books A Million and Barnes & Noble. They have remainder books that are really low priced sometimes and sometimes they don't sell. Used books sometimes is like throwing dice as far sales is concerned.

You obviously forget that these ain't HER books, these are books people SELL to her and what do you know, they too would like to make some profit but they are getting half of that 9.50. Would you be willing to sell your books for 4 bucks? I dont think so. And if she drops her prices so the sellers will get less than 4 $ for a book and than who the hell would take their books to her?

sorry a $9.50 is still far too much for a used book. let alone $18.99 is crazy too! Since you receive up to 1,000 books per day, you could certainly afford to drop your prices. Lower prices = more customers hungry to buy, buy, buy! Of course my words make no sense, perhaps times are better in Canada than in the US, where countless people are still unemployed -especially blacks. You'd think Pres. Obama would care about blacks, huh?

Rent has to be paid, utilities have to be paid, insurance, salaries, the list goes on. Giving 25% in trade credit is pretty standard and that's for paperbacks mostly. You need to spend some time in the trade, I did three years in it. Cash is usually about 12.5 % depending on condition.

I have a used bookstore in my area and while the husband was running the show he would take many books off my hands for cash or trade, but once his wife came into the picture she started rejecting most of what I had. The books I brought in were in good condition. Most I would rate as very good or good. Nothing was fair or poor - soiled, yellow or dirty. I take very good care of all my books. She was obviously very picky, so don't be extra picky when it comes to used books. They lost my business.
