    Love the shop! ♥️ You guys should add more seating in the front and a self-serve coffee station. That’ll bring in foot traffic for sure. Buy a book, get a free cup of coffee! Best of wishes :)

      One of my favorite thrift stores has a cute coffee shop in front and then a ton of things in the back very well organized. The coffee is super cheap (less than 3$) and tastes amazing and walking around with a cup of coffee and thrifting all in one place is the best!

    Stacking the books instead of standing them up is such a genius idea. In addition to making the shelves look nice and tidy, you also get the added bonus of not having to turn your head this way and that to read the titles.

    • @marciajohansson769
      @marciajohansson769 Год назад +14

      I used to stack my books on certain shelves and then I read " stacking books horizontally can place undue pressure on book spines". I am not sure how valid the source of the info is but I want to protect my investment! You are right though it is easier to read the titles.

    • @Danielle2Cats

    • @katerinafeiglova7886

      To me it is a terrible idea. It damages the book and it is a hassle to take the one on the bottom out if you just want to flip through it.

    I would like to add food for thought… as much as it would be cool looking to have floor to ceiling bookshelves, I wouldn’t use them for regular, sellable books. If you have them up too high, the customers will not be able to read the titles. They will want to climb the ladder themselves, which will increase your insurance cost. Rather, I would use that space to display old books that you aren’t planning on selling, or add art/decor to increase the ambience in the room :) or do the floor to ceiling bookshelves, but again, use them to increase ambience. If the customers can’t see it, they won’t buy it, so try to keep the shopping experience as easy as possible. Also, painting will make the room more fun and inviting :)

      Great minds think alike! We have our top shelf just for our very beautiful (and expensive) vintage books because we don’t want a ton of people touching them. But if we have someone super curious about a specific one, we go over with a step stool to get it down for them and let them know right away that it’s very valuable so they aren’t under the impression that they can buy a lovely book from 1907 for $6 or something 😆 and we have painted some walls now! Excited to share more of our progress and for you to see the result 🥰

    Maybe put self-help, religion and spirituality in one area. Also, there is a vintage bookshop here in Winchester, they mark the prices inside the front cover in pencil. It would be better than sticky notes which leave a residue over time. All the best with your bookshop. It looks amazing!

    I owned a cafe bookshop (new and secondhand books) in the UK in the 1990s with a friend, starting when we were about 27 years of age. Fun to watch a similar project happening across the pond. There's not a lot of profit in the business, so don't be giving away cups of coffee. Another suggestion is to put a few clues on the mystery bags to entice buyers. I hope you turn over the books that you have no real interest in, to provide space for topics of interest. Good luck!

    • @judithpride6810
      @judithpride6810 Год назад +3

      Some ideas for your "mystery" book bags (alt: "Blind Date with a Book" offers):
      Fiction: French classic; 19th century; provincial life; deemed immoral at the time, tried for obscenity.
      Fiction: Japanese, witty and punchy, analysis of work culture, likeable protagonist.
      Fiction: Modern classic; a back story of the "mad woman in the attic" from Jane Eyre.
      Sci-Fi: Psychological thriller; mysterious and eerie, unreliable narrator in an unreliable place.
      Fantasy: Historical military fantasy; intense world-building; fast-paced, not for the faint-hearted.

    Congratulations!! Selling books is a labour of love. BTW, having the thermostat up high is GENIUS. I don't know why random customers constantly mess with a shop's thermostat, but they do and it's frustrating when you're trying to budget your power expenses. Having high is a great way to ensure only staff touch it. Otherwise you need a locked cover box!

    That book "Hope Rising" at 2:20 is a great book, my grandpa gave it to me when I was a kid. About a rescue center for abused horses that comfort abused children that come to the ranch. I've always wanted to visit the ranch, it's in Oregon where I live. It was that gray book on the bottom shelf right before the clips switched. I've never seen another person with that book. I used to receive newsletters from the ranch, for years. Give it a read if you want!!

    THANK YOU for considering us wheelchair users. The vast majority couldn't care less and so much is inaccessible to us like we don't matter or exist. I hope things go very well for your bookshop in the future ❤️

    I haven't watched the full video yet, so idk if you already plan on doing this, but it would look really cool if you would paint all the bookshelves in one color. Could be black, for a clean, classic look or something more colorful like red, if you're going for a certain color theme ^^

      We’ve been thinking about painting the walls a nice color and then staining the shelves a nice, darker but warm tone 💛 we’ll be building new shelves, too, but reusing as much of the lumber we already have as possible!

    I think if you paint the front door a bright cheerful color-hot pink or turquoise- it would be more welcoming!

    This is a dream of mine. I have an empty apartment on my property that I’ve thought about using. It’s probably about the same size as your bookstore. I’m nervous though!! We also have sheep/cows and other animals I thought would be fun for kids while their parents shop

    Hi from Sweden! Maybe you could build the shelfs high up, as you talked about in the video, with the ladder. And put all your duplicates up there. So they are out of your way.

    So exciting this came up in my newsfeed. I have got a shop with English books and games here in France. In regards to any secondhand books we sell I always look up to online forums. For example anything below 3.9 on Goodreads is a NO. I hope this helps when reducing the volume. Good luck.

    I can't explain how excited I am to follow along this journey :) It'll be SO awesome to see the before and after, and also to get a behing-the-scenes glimpse of what it takes to run a bookstore! I'm just starting my career as a social worker in two weeks (!!!) and after watching this, kinda wanna ditch it all and open a bookstore 😂
    Thanks for the video! btw following along all the way from Israel :)
