    I think it's wonderful that your parents have accepted and respected your choices. There are too many stories of children being excluded by their families. High demand religions can be a nightmare to leave. It's refreshing to hear a positive outcome.

    Another great video! I grew up (and still live in) Gilbert, AZ which is has a very large LDS population. We have seminary buildings at every high school and all of that. I’ve dabbled with friends and what not through the years and always felt very welcomed and had great experiences. I have grown up Christian and actually did ask god if LDS is what I needed to be and got a very strong no. So I never pursued it further but have always been curious. So thank you for sharing and for doing so in such a fun but respectful way!

    I so admire and respect you both for researching and making an informed decision about religion. I think you did this video with such grace. I feel for me and my faith journey you nailed a lot of my questions about our faith correctly. I have struggled with policy changes that hurt it's members. The one I'm talking about personally is the change in missions. My son prepared his whole life to serve. That's what was taught right? Worthy men and women who have a desire to serve but the new profits have changed policy without explanation. My son has a walking disability so because of that he cannot serve but in the past they could. I thought that he could go and do a visitor center but nope that's only for sister missionaries. It has been devastating for him. He now thinks that the church does not except those who have disabilities. He is not active anymore and my other boys refuse to go because they say why do I want to attend a church that doesnt see our brother for the person he is and able to serve. It's been devastating as a mother because I feel because he was born with this condition I feel guilty. As a side note the Stake president told my son in front of us that he would be a burden to his companion. We h as ve also been told by church leaders that The church is run like a business. THAT is what bothers me the most. It makes me sad the Church I loved could do this to a worthy, able young man. Everyone has a journey and it is what it is. I pray someday that the Church became more accepting and loving as Christ would want all HIS children to be. We live in the world where there is so much available to accomidatade those who desire to serve Gods Church.
    I enjoys your vlogs and I feel it is truthful and honest not mean or condescending. Much Love

      Oh my goodness! I think that comes from your Bishop and Stake President. My friends son has serious medical issues and they worked it out for him to serve a mini mission. Another friend has a "slow" son and he served a service mission at the cannery. Now he done and is going to trade school.

      Sadly, it just sounds like they don’t want to accommodate you or your son so they are feeding you a bunch of bullshit. Can you blame your son for turning away? I surely wouldn’t and it sounds like you don’t either.
      You are on this earth to protect your children physically, mentally, and emotionally and you’re doing just that. I’m sorry that he is receiving that kind of push back. It’s extremely unfair.

    SO so so enjoyed this video and can't wait for more! Melissa, you are such a good pubic speaker and have such an eloquent way of expressing yourself. At the 42 min mark when you are talking about building on past prophets... I always wondered how older mormons could handle a flat out racist and homophobic church one day and then BOOM the next Black people could get the priesthood and I know they are softening a wee bit on LGBTQ issues. They also did a 180 on polygamy back in the day when Utah was vying for statehood... suddenly, that prophet was told it was optional or not necessary. CRAZY to have the core tenets of the church change overnight based on one man's vision or prophecy!!

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  2 года назад +1

      Yes, on the one hand it’s good that the church has evolved, but on the other hand, constantly changing doctrine that was said to be set in stone can lead to a lot of confusion! None of it ever felt Christ-like to me.

    Great Q&A! I just wanted to say about the whole mission thing that when I was almost 21, a family friend suggested I serve a mission. I was so mad that entire weekend. Mad at God. Mad at that family friend. I was too angry to even pray about it. I did NOT want to go. And I was that girl that everyone thought was just so spiritual. Well, when I finally told my dad what was going on, he told me that I had pretty much already gotten my answer.

    I love what you all were saying about there's no point on arguing about religion and it's so true, people believe something because of a strong personal conviction and in no way is there a reason to try and "win", I think the only thing that needs to happen is to share with eachother and talk through things but walk away with being okay with peoples choices. Also, something neat I learned in a class (i'm a PT) on dementia there are special blue zones in the world where you don't see dementia, co morbidity or lack of mobility happening, and living well beyond the average number of years. 1 is in the US and its around the LDS community, it has been attributed to the lifestyle choices they make as well as the great sense of community.

    Gosh, I've wanted you guys to do a podcast!! I think I mentioned it in a comment one time. I sort of know what it was like to grow up LDS. I joined at age 17 and 1/2, I was a senior in high school, got permission from my parents (it was over the summer). I was so stressed out because of seminary. But at least we read the Book of Mormon (I read it 3 times as a member). I think I married too young, and the bishop should have told me not to get married. Is the Podcast on Spotify? When I was around 21/22 I converted to the LDS church. I think I did it just to “find myself”,I have since gone back to the church I grew up in (the Assemblies of God). It’s funny though,because when I left no one noticed lol. I went to two different large wards here in Northern,NY. And I went to Palmyra to see where it all began. It’s amazing how this small little town with one gas station and a grocery store is on the map for the LDS church.

    The age of accountability is somewhere around 8 in Catholicism too. And I had a teacher really pound that into me and also pound into me that I could die at any moment. So for an entire year I was TERRIFIED that I was about to die, like I was going to die TONIGHT. And it got to the point that I had accepted the point that I was going to die i was just crazy focused on making sure I went to heaven.

  • @lisachatham8690
    @lisachatham8690 2 года назад +1

    Yes the people in general are wonderful and caring. I have been LDS since 16 , and I have lived in 3 states and been to 5 different wards/ branches. I have felt uncomfortable in a couple, but for the most part everyone was great. In 1 ward we had what we called " the fashion police" they were the ones that made some people uncomfortable. The Ward I am in now, I don't know how to explain it but I just don't feel like I have been welcomed. It could be due to the virus, but I just don't feel like I am wanted there. I also have some of the same questions that you did Melissa and that could be a piece of why I feel like I do. The one family that I was really close to moved away and I just have no desire to attend anymore. There are other things also but they are not for here. I still welcome the missionaries over and feed them fairly regularly. I guess I am one of the people who just need to feel like I am wanted there, I just don't feel it.

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  2 года назад

      (Melissa) I completely understand how hard it is to not feel welcomed by a ward. It makes it so hard. You are completely valid in your feelings and I love that you still feed the missionaries. We do as well, and having opportunities to serve no matter what you believe is such a positive experience. I wish you the best of luck in your personal journey and hope that you find where you feel happiness, positivity and love. One thing to remember with 8 being the ‘age of accountability’ it is still according to their understanding. So an 8yo child isn’t going to be held to the same ‘accountability’ as an adult. You become more accountable as you get older and your knowledge of things increases, just like in regular society

    There was a rule about Tats as well. I converted in the 90s. Yes, you can be a convert and find out you have a family history in the church.

  • @RoughStoneRollingLapidary
    @RoughStoneRollingLapidary 2 года назад +5

    I am so shocked that her parents are converts. I would have put money on her being “Mormon Stock”. I think you’re highlighting how different though the Mormon experience is in a convert family than a pioneer heritage, Utah bred family. I always was instinctively taught how different converts were than “us”. It’s like they didn’t know about the history and the culture that were passed down for generations. It just made such a difference. It’s hard to explain. I haven’t been in the church since 2007 and i still see myself feeling that way like right here. It’s so crazy. It seems like it would be a lot easier to leave in a convert family than a Utah Mormon pioneer stock family. It’s just so engrained into generational culture. For example. My moms side is pioneer stock and my dads side “only” joined in the generation of my great-grandfather. So to me growing up my dads side was still viewed as converts and not 100% Mormon. This topic is not something I’ve seen discussed on any post Mormon areas. Its an interesting topic. I’d like to see it talked about. If anyone knows of a source that it is discussed in. Please let me know.

    My adopted dad was a Presbyterian minister. I could do Mormon modesty blindfolded, other than tank tops. No issues there. It's kind of the 1950s, Father knows best vibe although women's ball gowns and summer clothes of that time would show shoulders. Mormon modesty doesn't sound that restrictive.

    I am kind of going through a faith transition from the Church as well. There are some aspects I like and some I don't which reflect the same things Melissa discussed. I have felt kind of half way in the Church and halfway out which is weird and doesn't make sense to do. If I may ask, have you two decided yet where you want to be? I'm considering non-denominational Christianity. It is so challenging though to figure out where to go and what I want to do.

      (Melissa) Hi Morgan! My heart goes out to you, because I know how hard it is to go through a faith transition. When I first started coming to the realization that the LDS church wasn't for me I really thought I would go with a non-denominational Christian church as well. Watching RUclips videos of Lynn Wilder like @wanderandwonder suggested was so powerful to me in my transition. We ended up making the choice to not become a part of any religion or congregation at this time. I feel like the LDS church so often tells us that when we leave we will "have no where to go", which is terrifying when you are a part of such a strong community as the LDS church. At first I really felt that I needed a substitute for the church. I needed somewhere to go to fill the void that would be left after my transition. But as time passed I realized that I personally needed space from all religion and needed the opportunity to build what I believed from the ground up. Sam and I continue to study, ponder, and build upon our beliefs, but not through any person or organization's lens or guidance. It can be scary at first, but so liberating with time. I wish you the best in your faith transition and know that you will be able to find somewhere that can give you the peace that you are searching for, whether that is in a Christian community or without. =)

    There's a great book by an LDS author that shows that there's perfect harmony between the prophetic statements concerning the garden of Eden being in Missouri and the Old Testament account concerning the garden of Eden. It is great that you grew up in an open discussion family. That is probably why the two of you have such open communication, i understand that now.
    The changes in rules/ practices is a common problem in religion. Having all these exta books/ manuals is what often causes issues. Stick to the bible and all the other 'thou shalt' books.
    If you were to find a new church go to one that opens the bible and reads from it.

    I think a lot of the reasons people don't sit down and have the discussions about changes in faith have to do with wanting to protect the other person's testimony along with the possible shame of being perceived as having a weak testimony of their own. There's just so much guilt and shame that people carry around and don't talk about. I even feel guilty about not questioning things I was told as a literal child even though I intellectually understand that questions were never really encouraged.

    As an inactive member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a parent, I remember my own children asking why we did not drink and such and even the no dating until they were sixteen and my answers were never, "Because the Prophet said so," but more logical answers such as level of maturity with dating and the emotional ramifications or the way the body reacts to substances that alter you, especially in younger individuals before they are fully developed. Like your parents, I was a convert at sixteen. I do not quite know why that portion of the interview struck such a chord in me; I guess I am able to relate not being raised in the faith.
    Everything that was taught HAD to have reasons other than, "Because the Prophet said so," for me to teach my children, who are not active either. My eldest believes in Creator (just another name for Heavenly Father), and my daughter is very much a pagan witch focusing on nature and our Celtic/Nordic roots.

    I wish you could collaborate with/ talk to Emily Freeman. She and a friend have a channel and she has an amazing way of explaining things.
    One thing that I think is important for you to consider (that Emily said) is Joseph Smith was figuring out, how to do this, while doing it and while a lot was going on. He had no books to refer to and not all the time in the world to consider everything. The church now doesn't know or have records for everything that happened, they just dont know for sure. (My understanding about) the 14 year old wife story was that she didn't live with Joseph and most likely the marriage was not consummated and there were reasons for it. At the time with all of this being new to them the father of the girl wanted to marry his family to Joseph. His daughter was not given a lot of choice in it but it was planned that she wouldn't live with Joseph till she was older. I wonder that you still think why would God allow this anyway, they were doing it for not the best reasons and not giving a child her choice But God knew that Joseph would die before she was of age. Yes technically she was a widow but God let's us make mistakes, all of us. He forgives and teaches through everything.
