- Do polygamist communities have doctors and dentists? Do they accept medical care from the "outside world"? This video goes over a lot of great questions we have received about medical care in the FLDS community.
You are the best possible guys to educate outsiders on how the FLDS community functions. You have such sweet spirits. I just hope people realize how seriously disfunctional this community is. And how good people are hurt in there by bad people.
Wic is for baby formula, milk, juice, and some food staples. The finger prick is to check your iron. I used this program with both my kids. Such a blessing. The price of formula is criminal. This program is a lifesaver.
The ingredients in formula is criminal ! Wet nursing / breastfeeding milk donation is FAR healthier. I did both with my youngest. I not only wet nursed someone else's baby who desperately needed breastmilk until mom could get enough of a stash of donated milk for herself. I donated milk, when my supply was big enough. And while still pumping to increase my supply, I recieve it and did everything I could to aquire it BEFORE resulting to using that nasty formula.

WIC also does lead checks in high risk communities but not typically vaccines.

I’ve been waiting on y’all to post ☺️ I was wondering after you left did you ever have a moment where you were like “I shouldn’t be doing this” ? The reason I ask is because I grew up in the Bible Belt so I went to a baptist church. I love rock music and scary movies and still to this day before I turn it on I think to myself “is this okay” . My house wasn’t strict at all so unlike some of my friends I was allowed to watch twilight and listen to AC/DC and 2livecrew. Even though I didn’t have a strict upbringing I still find myself questioning if I’m doing the right thing or not so I was wondering if other people do too

Hi Tori! That is a very good question. I definitely had those moments of wonder/fear that I was doing something I shouldn't be. Because of the strict way of which I was raised, simple things like wearing a t-shirt or watching tv made me question if I was doing something wrong. It was almost like I was constantly waiting for a lightning strike to punish me for leaving, as I thought at the time, the only truth.

Sounds like maybe you got a tb test. I think at least at some sights WIC can do that

Most of the women are still married in their elderly years. If they do become widows when they are very old they will live with their older children.

Hi there, not sure if you'll see this comment on an older video. As a geneticist, I'm very curious about the gene pool in the FLDS community. I've heard that a genetic condition called Fumarase Deficiency is more common in the FLDS community due to consanguineous marriages. Do you have any insight on endogamy/inbreeding in the community? Are your parents related at all? Have you seen any medical effects in the community related to the small gene pool? You said no questions are off-limits so I'm going there. Thank you!

I'm unsure about Sam’s family but both the Jeffs line and the Jessop line both have evidence of inbreeding-related disorders. Rachel Jeffs (iirc) mentioned in passing in her memoir about some of the genetic disorders in her household.
She is one of the older children of Warren's preceding Rulin’s passing so that might be a good starting point. But I do think that the that weren't intimately involved with Warren werent subject to the interfamilial marriage until right before Warrens arrest.

When I was 11 I lived with my family in a small rural town in Michigan. I broke my arm and was taken to our local hospital. The doctor that saw me was obviously very drunk. Even as a young girl I knew immediately that he was drunk because he got in my face and reeked of alcohol. He showed me and my mom the X-ray and said yep it’s broke. Thankfully he did not “set it” but he did put a brace on it with an ace bandage. He said go home and let it heal. I was awake all night in excruciating pain. My mom took me to an orthopedic doctor the next day where he set both the ulna and radius since they were broke in half and put me in a cast. I felt instant relief from the pain. He told my mom that I never would have gained full use of that arm again if she hadn’t brought me to him. I can’t imagine the pain you must have endured letting it heal on its own. I’m happy for you though that you are able to use it properly.
The bishop Fred Jessop's wife was the first doctor in the town. She was probably the one who assisted Sam's mom when he was born. Then another one of the bishop's wives became a certified midwife. And 2 barlow men became doctors. And Charlotte barlow also became a doctor. The hildale clinic eventually got an xray machine and a bunch of girls in the town became nurses. Also they have paramedics and EMTs just like any other town. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have put a cast on Sam's arm or sent him down to st George to the hospital. I had 6 kids when I lived out there and the medical care we received was excellent.
Are they still delivering at that clinic?
WIC often tests for iron deficiency. That's what he's talking about. It's done pretty regularly, monthly I believe. Hope this helps. Love your channel.
I am totally shocked that the "doctor" didn't suggest any form of immobilization or splinting at all. Casting has been standard practice for decades. Plaster casts started being experimented with in the early 1800s. I'm guessing that casting was nearly universal by at least the 1950s, at least in places with access to medical care. Not utilizing splinting techniques leads to tremendous pain and often bones that don't heal properly. It's really surprising to hear that it was standard practice in that community NOT to use some sort of splint or cast.
You sure had an eventful childhood. I agreed with your wife. Poor mom! She must have been the most skilled band aider out there. Bless her heart. ❤️ I sure hope your family didn't end up with loads of debt after the big accident. I know health care in the US can be extremely expensive. I have metastatic cancer and live in Norway where health care is free for everyone. I cannot imagine being as sick as I truly am and having to deal with putting my family in debt while getting chemo in order to hopefully prolong my life. Bless you for sharing your story.

Great videos ! I always thought of the FDLS as an abusive culture, your childhood doesn’t sound that way. Thanks for being respectful to your parents, and the culture you don’t agree with. We need more of that.
I believe it is way worse for girls in that culture
It is horrible for all! You need to look into this further before making such statements! Rape, physical abuse, lack of medical care, lack of food, and on and on!

They do check for iron at the wic office but in my city, wic is connected with the public health office so it was the same building for both wic services and vaccines. That may be how it was set up there.
I think ours was just wic services.
@@GrowingUpinPolygamy I know it's been a minute, but my family was on WIC as a child. As part of the qualification process, we all got basic medical screenings to screen for "nutrition risk" but while we were there we got vision and hearing tests.
How were all of these huge medical bills paid? I doubt that conventional medical insurance would cover families practicing polygamy.
The prick the kids get at Wic is to test for Iron levels.
It is very interesting about your story.. that remind me that your FLDS communities comes to Dixie Hospital.. I have seen it also visit local (Dixie) doctors offices.. My Ex wife used to work at the Dixie hospital.. Glad you are doing great healthy :)

WIC checks kiddos iron levels and sometimes sugar levels so kids often get a poke

If you broke your humerus bone in your arm, they don’t put a cast on it, just a sling and you need to keep it very still.

If I remember correctly WIC tests for iron levels to see if the child is eligible for additional foods due to low iron. WIC=Women Infant & Children

Hello! It isn't considered unfaithful in their eyes because they are all their "wives" spiritually. And for them intimacy is primarily for bearing children, and they just have the mindset that being intimate with more than one woman is normal. This would be a great video topic! Thank you!
Yes WIC stands for Women Infants and Children they provide nutrition to low income fmailies as well as your MMR, (measles , mumps, and rubela) now they also do chicken pox vacinnations as well as all the others that are needed. As a low income young mom they helped with things like cheese, dried beans, milk, formula, cereal, peanut butter. etc. You would get vouchers to take to participating stores. I last used it as a foster parent. The program was for kids newborn - 4 years I believe. Great program.
Thank God you went to Vegas for the accident. I crushed my elbow as an adult and went to a small clinic in the Appalachian Mountains in Ny while on vacation. The xrays didnt show the crushed elbow and had to drive to SD to go see my Dr who was in the insurance network. They did an MRI and I had to have a titanium elbow put in my arm. I get it, so thankful you went to a major hospital.

How do they handle health insurance in the FLDS? And what about women that need c sections? Do they still have a large number of kids anyway?
What about when you got sick from viruses (e.g. pneumonia, flu, hand foot and mouth, etc.) Or bacterial infections did you have antibiotics? Did you see a pediatrician for those common childhood illnesses or did you just not get sick much because of no school?
WIC checks the child's Iron levels. My kids got WIC and that is what they checked
How is your arm now? Is there any long term damage to it?

As someone from Canada, I’m really curious how if you know what would happen in terms of bills when someone went to the hospital? Did anyone have health insurance? From what I’ve heard of the cost of even going for a doctors visit that the cost for something like a serious accident would be very high. Thank you for making these videos!
He has explained before that most of the mom’s were not officially married by the state so they qualified as single mothers for some state funded things. Certainly in the USA most single mother’s qualify for medicaid which covers the kids and also can cover the mom for a much short time or up to a financial limit.
Women. Infant. Children. Up to age 5. Food. Mini physicals.
WIC would prick to test sugar for the kids. My daughter was tested once a year when we went.
