You know, I've just left an abusive marriage to a man I've known my entire life. And I've been watching other people's relationships and how men and women who are different than myself and my ex-husband were. You two are the gold star of couples. Just even the way that you interact just sitting there shows me a lot of what it looks like to have and show mutual respect to eachother. I'll never go into another relationship again unless those are the things I see. Just thought you might like to know that you two help people beyond just sharing your experiences within the church. :)
Peace to you. I have walked a very similar road. May you find healing, peace, support, and love along your journey. I don't know you, but I'm proud of you for seeing your true value and worth.
I remarried after leaving my abusive husband seven years ago and one day I stood in my kitchen and realized that my second marriage is normal and the way it supposed to be and only now am I feeling very comfortable because I was with my first husband close to 25 years and I thought dysfunction was normal.
@@IlivebcuzHelovesme So glad you found happiness . 14 year abusive got out myself and I know how you feel looking around and for me wondering is this how a real relationship feels .
Thank you for sharing this! I have been so curious about Sunday worship in the FLDS, and this answered a lot of questions. Great video. ❤️
Love you guys!
Keep up the good work, I was raised a jehovah witness I relate to you guys.
I was a lost boy in 2013, you have helped me heal. I lost my family.
Great video as always ! Thanks Sam & Meliss💕
Love learning from your videos! I also enjoy how you interact with each other, such a loving and caring couple! Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing. Your channel has been a real education for me, who has no experience or knowledge of the LDS church outside of bits and pieces. And NO knowledge of the FLDS outside the media weirdness. So I'm enjoying your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Yes! Always love getting notifications from yall! Love and blessings from Virginia 😘
Those pics of little Sam and Melissa are so adorable. Thanks for sharing them. More please?😘
I like your new intro. Curious to find out the differences between FLDS and LDS church services. Melissa, I always thought 3 hours was too long. Also, my place looks great!!! I passed inspections this week.
Just what I have been wanting to know more about! I very much appreciate the comparisons to the LDS since I also am so interested in that. I'm so interested in the church history and scriptural/religious beliefs and practices. Completely unrelated and probably not on topic for your channel but I'd really LOVE to see a video of how Melissa does her makeup haha. It always looks so good!
Aww thank you so much!
Woo hoo!! A new upload!
I’d love to hear some stories or info regarding Sam’s grandparents and aunts and uncles. As always you two did a fabulous job on this video.
Yes me too!
I clicked at a lightening speed haha! Work can wait for now 😂 love from colorado
Love the new intro! Y'all getting fancy 😆
Aww I love your little intro now!
Thank you so much!
When you spoke of the taking of the Sacrament and using water, it reminded me of a mission trip I went on to Romania. It was a medical mission trip and I was one of the adult leaders. Monday-Saturday we did medical clinics in the mornings, vacation Bible school in the afternoons and church services in the evenings. Sundays were different. We attended 4-6 church services where we sang, and presented Bible stories and gave our testimonies. Every church wanted us to take communion with them. It was common cup, and filled with very strong homemade grape wine. Because we were guests they wanted is to finish the glass of wine. After 2 or 3 services I was woozy and could hardly think straight! Lol!! I was not use to drinking and after a few ounces of wine at a few churches, I think I was tipsy! After a few Sundays we learned to not drink the wine! To take only one small sip at each church! Water would have been much better for us!
Hahaha that is so funny and so interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Heyyy! A new intro. It looks great :)
Thanks!
Love the Intro!
Do you have another picture of Sam as a polygamous boy? I would add that, because it´s the theme of the channel. Otherwise great. Short enough, but giving important glimpses into your life journeys.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
He's pretty much shunned so those pictures are likely hard to come by.
The all in one cup vs little cups really depends on which church you're going to as well. Even within Catholic churches I have seen both and have even seen ones where they didn't have wine (just the priest did), just had wafers.
You guys should write a book and start a podcast. It's so interesting to hear about different cultures and beliefs. Prayers that you find peace.
Thank you! We are working on a book and just started a podcast, although for now it is just the audio of our YT videos, not original content. Thank you for your support!
In the AUB everyone at church drinks out of the same cup too!
This is really a very interesting video! I appreciate how you both give each other time to talk and you look at each other often. It's appreciated how you interact with each other and not just the camera.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
So for the testimony did you have to get it approved by someone or did you just come up with it in your own? Also what does a testimony look like? And last question lol if everyone has said their testimony do they just say it again and again until new people are in the group or did you never have to repeat your testimony? Hope these made sense! Love the video!
I know in the LDS church, in a testimony meeting, anyone can get up & say anything without prior approval. You’re supposed to stick to affirming your belief in the church, the gospel, the prophet, the saviour, etc….& how your belief has improved/changes your life.
It can be pretty interesting sometimes.
Very interesting. For us Catholics my teenagers found the shortest mass there was and then the minimum requirement of weekly attendance is the offertory, consecration (bread and wine held up etc) and then priest's communion and you can get that down to about 20 minutes if you plan it well enough and pick the shortest one [ this is not best practice but complies with the rules.....} so our girls who each had a horse would spend the whole of Sunday with the horses after leaving the second the priest had had communion...
They save communion to the end for us. I live in the Midwest.
There is no official minimum requirement- if you are late or have to leave early for an emergency, God understands. However, it seems to be a phenomenon in many Catholic churches for a group of people to leave right after receiving communion.
That said, a typical Catholic Mass is far shorter than 2 or 3 hours, unless it's Easter or Christmas. As soon as it was mentioned in the video I thought to myself about how my own parish priest would sometimes joke after Mass and congratulate himself if we managed to finish in less than 50 mins. He even managed to make the confirmation Mass 1 hour. He keeps his sermons short and concise!
The Catholic church I go to has a 30min service 7am on a Monday morning. Includes readings, psalm call backs, a short sermon, sign of peace and the Eucharist. I was raised Anglican, so not officially Catholic but this little service is a satisfying ritual to attend regularly.
Oh my goodness; Sunday services! This was really cool! I think that churches, no matter what denomination, are more alike than different. We had to polish our shoes the night before, and of course curl our hair in either brush rollers or some other equally painful implement of torture. Sunday morning: up at 7:30, off to church at 8:30. My dad was the superintendent of the SS and also a deacon, soooo we always had to be there first😑. 1 1/2 hour of SS, then church. We were out between 12:00 and if we had a guest minister, it could go until 12:30. I was always ravenous by the time we got home. We would change into our play clothes, we then had to go back to evening service. We got home around 9pm. We were what you would call, born on a pew. We would have family devotion every evening my dad was home. That was also torture, because after the Bible lesson, we all had to kneel and pray. I tried to pray everything I needed to say to God in the shortest possible way. Then my dad would start praying and praying and praying. While he was praying, I was praying to God that He would end my dad’s prayer. This was such a fun video, and brought up so many funny memories about church. Way to go guys!
I would love to hear anything more Sam remembers/knows and Winston Blackmore and the Canadian Flds group :)
Tfs. I’ve been to a Lutheran service where they drank actual red wine out of one big cup. I grew up Pentecostal (I currently attend a baptist church) my grandfather was an Anglican minister, we always had grape juice in the little cups at all of these dominations. Our church service is about 1 1/2 hours long, Sunday school is run at the same time on the church grounds. So interesting to hear about the differences between the different religions.
That is so interesting! Thanks for sharing!
No question but I just wanted to tell y’all I think the world of you! Well wishes and health xoxoxo
Hey, I love listening to you guys but since you switched to the podcast format the audio quality has dropped and it’s hard to listen to. I think we would be ok if you guys had mics closer to you in the frame. Keep up the good work!!!
We will look into what's going on and get it fixed. Thank you so much for letting us know!
So, so interesting 😊
Thank you so much for sharing. Can you do a video about what it was like for men/women that had difficulty conceiving children. We’re they supported or were they ostracized? I’m curious what that was like. Thank you!
I remember an episode of Escaping Polygamy and when Loren left he told them he was leaving during his testimony, it was classic lol 😂 he was FLDS.
I saw that episode as well
Hi, nice to see You both, but I thought today was going to be part 2 from last weeks video???
Hi Maria! We posted part 2 last week. If you click on our channel name you should see it there. 😊
@@GrowingUpinPolygamy Hi, Thank You, i have my notifications on for u guys don't get how I missed it., sorry
May I ask a couple of follow up questions? Is it only older kids who went to the meeting house? Do women get to give testimony at home? Do women ever speak at the meeting house? How often is the topic marriage/women's duty to marry? Can families sit wherever they want or is there a hierarchy in the audience? Did Sam's family get to sit at the front because his dad was leadership? Did you get to go sit and talk with your friends before/ after the meeting?
Don't know if you guys answered this question already or not but (without getting into specifics) do FLDS members get patriarchal blessings like LDS members? Did they come from the prophet or did your family patriach give them? When you converted to LDS, do you get a (or a new) patriarchal blessing?
Love the new intro!
Great question! I think it deserves it's own video, but in short, yes they did give patriarchal blessings the same way that the LDS do. My father was actually a patriarch out there.
I know this is probably a weird topic, but I’m curious as to what funerals looked like for FLDS as well as LDS members. Love the channel and you guys are amazing!
For the FLDS funerals, pretty much the whole town would go to every funeral. Even if they did not know the person that well
I'm also so curious about how families support themselves after a patriarch dies. I realize some families remarry but do women get to own any of their property? Do women, sister wives, stay together in the home ever?
Are there wards in the FLDS? And did the woman wear their dresses to bed? Or did they have actually pajamas?
Wow! That’s a lot of church! How did the parents deal with little babies or toddlers who obviously need to eat , play or nap?
They don't.
I would like to know about what the change was like going from fdls clothing to regular clothing and what he likes to wear now
As a child I attended with my grandparent to their LDS church and I only remember them passing around a tray with “shots” of water and a small cup with bread
Thanks for another great video. Question: did they separate the men and women in church? Was there a children's program?
At the meetinghouse it was all together, it was at home where we were separated by age. And then in addition to church meetings there were Priesthood meetings that were only for the men.
@@GrowingUpinPolygamy Interesting! Thanks for your answer
Did Rulon fly into Short Creek and fly out for the Sunday meetings?
Do FLDS celebrate holidays? Are they different holidays than the greater culture celebrates or the same? Are their any additional holidays?
"The Common Cup" is common in many religious groups. In our United Church, we take the elements by Intinction (dipping the bread in the cup). I am interested if there is one specific leader in each ward. I know there are "elders" but is there no specific leader like a pastor, minister, priest?
Are you UCC? We have stopped the common cup intincture during covid.
@@starrcrossreardon yes I am. I agree we have gone to the individual during covid however the common cup is our tradition.
In the FLDS there was one bishop in Hildale and one in Canada over those two congregations. In the LDS there is a "Bishopric" that is the over each ward, which consists of a Bishop, his first counselor, second counselor, and a secretary. All must be men and all must hold the Priesthood.
Did you ever meet Kevin Barlow who was the superintendent of all priesthood schools under Warren Jeffs?
I’m surprised you used water for sacrament. Most churches use wine but the one I grew up in was anti alcohol so we used grape juice. I’ve never heard of anyone using water before.
In sweden we use alcoholfree wine. 😊
I have enjoyed your insider veiw of polygamy! I have a question... Sealing. To get into the celestial kingdom, when you are born and if you unfortunately pass away, you end up in your patents kingdom? When you marry does that trump you parents sealing for both the man and woman? Is the family always sealed to the husband's parents? I guess my question is how does it work? Always sealed to original family or does it "change hands" with marriage?
Is it the same rules for both LDS and FLDS?
Thanks for sharing your story
These are the best questions; can’t wait to hear the answers!
Ex fundamentalist Mormon here. In my upbringing the women are sealed into their husband’s and his parents “kingdom”, effectively ending her “sealing” connection with her own parents.
Do you think the kids ever hoped Warren would say they’re not worthy and cancel mass so they could go home and play?
I know I did haha 🤣
Were women/ girls allowed to be in the FLDS chior? Did the FLDS or LDS churches ever use grape juice for communion/ sacrament? I know they never use wine.
The choir was half/half of women and men. And no, they always used water.
My mom said when she was young they all drank out of the same cup too. She is LDS.
Speaking of comfy clothes? What did pajamas look like for both men and women?
Long nightgowns for the girls and long comfy pants and tops with buttons and collars (like old fashioned pajamas) for the boys.
They probably never cleaned the little cups anyways, so what's the difference, what's the point? Check your Instagram messages. I have an awesome story about the Columbus OH Temple dedication. I did not get to meet Gordon B. Hinkley, but I could almost have?
We throw the little cups away
Does the flds go to the temple to do ordinances like the LDS?
No. They only ever built one temple, but it wasn't for everyone and was very secretive about what went on there.
Melissa, what do they call sacrament in the Catholic church? I once had an online friend who became Catholic. And then her channel became a Catholic channel, and I had to tell her I could never convert. And ironically, she helped me become mainstream Christian. She used to be in Church of Christ, and she graduated from Pepperdine.
Eucharist or the Host, if my memory serves. That's what the wafers are called. When you get a wafer you "take Communion ". One can go to Mass, the ceremony where the priest changes the wafers and wine into the body and blood of Christ, and not take Communion. (Any Catholics feel free to correct me if I'm misremembering. I'm what they call a "submarine Catholic ", we only surface when there's trouble.)
Yep, the Eucharist. Or Communion. You can only take Communion if you've received the sacrament (thru a ceremony).
As much as I like everyone in my church I'd never drink after them. Seems so strange to me.
Regarding the cup, you mention drinking water. In my church we drink juice, other churches drink wine, as a representation of Jesus’s blood. What does the water represent?
We were told that the water still represented blood. I honestly don't know how/why they switched it to water.
That’s so interesting. Thank you for your reply.
Forgive me for being uninformed because I've never been to LDS church. I'm catholic and we do wine for the blood of Christ as I think most churches do for the body and blood. Why would the replace with water? Is it because you are not allowed to drink or for a more significant/symobolistic reason of water?
(Melissa) I was told that it was because we weren't supposed to drink alcohol, so they just switched to water. No extra significance or anything like that.
I just have a question about how one man financially supports that many children. I have Amish cousins and can understand farming families who also have cash side businesses. But it takes a lot of income for one man to feed and clothe that many children. Moms are obviously busy enough caring for the babies and older children move into more responsible roles. In my dad's family whose mother came from the Swiss Anabaptist, each older child was assigned one younger child to keep an eye on. But it still comes down to one man feeding 30 or 40 people.
They have a video talking about that subject
They abuse th3 welfare system. Although some have family owned businesses
❤️
I have recent pictures of the inside of the meeting house, if you're interested Lmk
We're definitely interested! Thanks for sharing! Would you mind emailing them to us at growingupinpolygamy@gmail.com 😊
Other point, during the situation, the Catholic church couldn't meet, and then for a while they couldn't whatever they call sacarament.
What do these "testimonies" sound like?
They are where people share what they believe to be true. So they share that they know that the church is true, the prophet is the mouthpiece of God, and things like that.
Is it okay to share holy water during covid? I bet not. LOL.
I dont understand what testimony means
A testimony is when someone shares or "testifies" of what they believe to be true. It is basically statements of "I believe...or I know..." People often use it to state that they believe that the church is true, that Jesus lives, that the prophet is God's mouthpiece, and confirm other church doctrines that they believe.
@@GrowingUpinPolygamy thanks a lot for the explanation 😊
Why water? That's not biblical. Jesus and his disciples drank wine
Are you both related?
Husband and wife. =)
