Fabulous but I would have loved start to finish! What about the Spine Dangle with ribbons and charms ? I really enjoyed watching and learning from you! I Love that you kept the iconic foil that Little Golden Book is known for. Thank You 😊
I really love your little golden book. 😍What size Spine did you make, 1 1/2 inch? I have a pack of those Brad Ring things from Tim Holtz and I have yet to use them. I think the way you did it looks so nice. I never thought of using breathable tape, great idea!! I found some little golden books at goodwill yesterday and I attempted to make my first one last night. I removed the signatures from a Elmo L.G.B. after I took the signatures out. I used a Heat gun to partially remove the gold foil so I could take the staples out. I just didn’t love the look because part of the foil had pulled away from the book when I took out the signatures. I didn’t lift the entire piece of golden foil off, only up to where the staples were. I used art glitter glue to glue it back in place.
Hi, Deb! Thank you so much!! Sounds like you’re having lots of fun with the project, too. It’s been a while since I made that one, but I think the spine was 1-1/2”. I’m really looking forward to getting my craft room back up and running. The room is painted and the floor is in, but my husband needs to make shelves for the closet and install the baseboards before I can move all my stuff back in from storage. Please be patient with me during this process. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to start making mare videos. Thanks so much for watching and for your lovely comment! ~Kathy xo
I've been looking for a video that keeps the spine intact so thank you! I have a question. What's the best tool/method to cut your spine? I find none of my cutting tools gives me a clean cut b/c of the thickness.
Hi, KT, thank you for your question! I use an exacto knife to cut through the foil once I take the signatures out. Little Golden Books don’t really have a spine per se. The signatures are stapled in through the sides and then the foil is wrapped around to conceal the staples. I hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching!! ~Kathy xo

I have a bunch of little golden books to turn into junk journals and will give your method a try. Funny about the Charmin Chatty doll, I had one when I was little! Oh those memories!!!
Oh my goodness, that’s awesome! You are the first person I’ve ever known of that had a Charmin Chatty doll too! I wonder if any of the records are still around. Thank you so much for your kind comments. Although I was happy with the beads on the Charmin Chatty LGB, I didn’t use that method on the Donald Duck Toy Train LGB and I was super happy with the way it turned out. I have posted a few videos of the progress of that journal as well as a flip-through. Great news about getting the foil on Amazon, thanks! I’ll definitely check that out. Thank you so much for watching!!! ~Kathy xo
Hi. I’m fairly new here. I’ve seen a lot of LGB videos, but yours is the only one I find with the gold spine intact like this. I was hoping to see how you put the pages back in without goofing that up, but I can’t find the next video, if there is one. Can you help? Also, I haven’t done this yet but I’ve seen several posts saying you can use a blow dryer or heat gun to warm up the gold spine, then peel it off intact before taking the book apart. No need to have staple tears in it.
Hi Debbie! Here’s the video where I added the signatures, and there should be a link to the playlist at the end. I’ve heard of the blow dryer method for removing the foil but haven’t tried it yet. @@AtticTreasuresEtc Thanks for responding so quickly. I think I’m confused. (Story of my life!) I was sure that when I watched the first video, you had the foil spread out intact and running down the enlarged spine. I see that wasn’t true, so I don’t know what I’m talking about. 🤪 I’ve seen both of your videos here at least once before. Maybe it was someone else. Whatever it was, (assuming I’m not making it up) she had, like, three LGB altered covers all prepared that way, and I couldn’t think how she could sew in the signatures without poking holes in it. I am enjoying your videos very much, even if I see things that aren’t really there. 😂 Thanks!
@@debbietroyer9480 lol, I totally get it! I often can’t remember where I’ve seen a video. I think you’re right about seeing that in another video, though, because I keep the foil attached to the covers, rather than removing it and reattaching it to the spine. (I hope that makes sense.) Personally, I like the look of the foil in its original place. 😊
Can I just use fabric glue for the fabric because I don't have all that different tape stuff lol I just have art glitter glue and fabric glue that's what I normally use for my books. And rubber tape for the book spine
Hi Samantha! You can certainly try that and see how it works. Maybe practice on a newer thrifted Little Golden Book. I was concerned that the glue alone would come apart during use which is why I opted for the fabric tape. I found it at Joann Fabrics if you have one near you. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. Happy crafting! ~Kathy xo
Hi I apologize if this is a repeat but it seems how you glue the front and back cover on that it won't stay together after let's say a few months. Do you have any issues? I love that you keep the foil and don't cut the story
I haven’t had any issues, but I did recently buy a long arm stapler. For the one I’m working on now I removed the foil very carefully with a heat gun, which took quite a while. I’m going to finish creating the signatures before deciding how wide the spine will need to be, then I’ll put the cover together the same way I did in this video, and use the stapler for added security. Then I’ll reattach the foil. Thanks for watching and for the question. ~Kathy xo
Hi Renea. Yes, Fabritac contains acetone so the odor is pretty strong. You might try using Art Glitter Glue, or Fabric Fusion tape. Thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
My favorite Golden book is Thumbelina. I think I will try this method on it, thanks so much for showing how you did this! Question, did you poke the wire to the inside and does it show? Merry Christmas my friend 🎄❤️🎄❤️
Thank you! When I poked the wire through on this one I had already glued the fabric down on the inside, so I strung some beads on it on the inside, too. But this morning I had the epiphany to do all the beading before gluing the fabric down on the inside, taping the ends of the wire down on the inside, then finish gluing the fabric down, so nothing will show. I’ll be on the lookout for Thumbelina, I loved that story, too. 💕 ~Kathy xo

@@AtticTreasuresEtc I will have to watch the. I referenced this video the past weekend, to save the foil on a journal Ivan working on, thank for the tutorial.

~Kathy xo
Really love the way you did that. Do you have a tutorial on how to add the pages.
Thank you very much, Caroline. I do have a playlist for a Little Golden Book journal. Here’s a link to the playlist. Thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo

I love this. I have been wondering how to go about this myself and you have saved me the trouble. They look great. I will do this with the next one I make. Plus I like your idea of using sports tape. Thank you :)
Thanks so much! It makes me so happy when others are inspired to try new things. Happy crafting, and thanks for watching! ~Kathy xo
I love how those gold beads turned out, really accentuates the gold foil! Did you know you can buy the gold foil strips on Amazon? Just in case you have one that is damaged too much to save.
~Kathy xo
What are those strips called. I can’t seem to find on Amazon
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment! ~Kathy xo

Actually, this is the one where I sewed in the signatures, if that helps. 😊

~Kathy xo
@@AtticTreasuresEtc I did and it worked great.! Love that the gold foil is visible and in tack
@@Craftsbysamantha229oh I’m so happy to hear that! Thanks so much for letting me know!! 😊
~Kathy xo
I see what you did there… you gave it your “awl”! Great tips for using these books. 🖖 🤪
Thanks Honey, for being my biggest enabler, I mean fan! ☺️😘💕
I am very sensitive to odors. Does the fabritac have a strong smell? If so, is there something you'd suggest to use instead?
💕 ~Kathy xo
@@AtticTreasuresEtc ok got it! But the beads must look pretty inside too!❤️
thatsreally nice!
Thank you so much, Angie! And thank you for watching! ~Kathy xo
operation: Save the foil!💛
It’s a worthy goal! 😊 Thank you so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
This is a great video lots of great info
I had Chatty Cathy
I also had a Crissy Doll
Someone gave me a LGB it needs to be rescued can I send it to you?
Thank you so much Charis! I have quite the backlog of LGB books at the moment. Which one do you have? Thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
I was doing this great but I have two that will not budge. I ended up tearing the back cover off when I started pulling the book open. Oh well.
Oh no! Those must be extremely strong staples! I hope you’ll keep trying. Thank you so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
❤️👍👍🖤♥️
Thank you!! And thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
I still have my Chatty Cathy.
That’s awesome! I saw a Charmin Chatty in an antique store awhile back and now I wish I would’ve picked her up. Thanks so much for watching!! ~Kathy xo
Nice
Thank you so much and thanks for watching! ~Kathy xo
Have you finished this book?
Hi Barb, yes I finished the Donald Duck one and did a series of videos on it. I loved how it turned out! 😊 ~Kathy xo
@@AtticTreasuresEtc I will have to watch the. I referenced this video the past weekend, to save the foil on a journal Ivan working on, thank for the tutorial.
Im confused..."signatures"?
I was confused when I first heard that term as well. A signature is a section of pages folded together and sewn or glued into the binding of the book. I hope that helps. Little Golden Books always have two signatures in their original state. I added more. Thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
Thank you for replying!❤
You’re very welcome! ❤️
I always cringed when someone took off the foil part.
Hi Deborah. Same here, which is why I developed this method. 😊 I hope you’ll give it a try! Thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
I was horrified when they took the gold spine off. I am a Librarian so taking a book apart was horrifying anyway.
@@colleenkielczynski1696 I can imagine how cringy it is to you to watch someone gut a book.
@@colleenkielczynski1696 the library where I live throws away thousands of books every year. Seems better to tear them apart to use them for art than adding to the landfill.
The strip comes off easily with a heat gun.
Thanks, that’s a great tip! Thanks so much for watching! ~Kathy xo
I'm cringing a bit, because some of the Little Golden Books are valuable, so hopefully you're using common ones that aren't.
I check first, and so far none of the ones I’ve done are more valuable than they are as altered junk journals. Thank you for watching! ~Kathy xo
Why didn’t your parents want to get you a chatty Cathy because your name was Cathy?
I’m sure they figured that since my name was Kathy they wanted to get me a doll with a different name. I remember thinking it was really cool that not only was I the only one I knew that had a Charmin’ Chatty, but she had actual records with different themes that I could switch out. I loved her!
