After owning a GMT and OP for almost 10 years I wanted to get myself a Daytona Panda for my 60th birthday, about 2 weeks later I came across a page about high end clones and decided to give it a try. Once came I compared it to my original GMT (in terms of quality, feeling of the steel etc). I understood one thing, China can't be beaten. There is no chance ANYONE will be able to spot it as a fake, Even the inside movement is identical 4130. The build quality and finish put a lot of legitimate Swiss brands to shame.
I’ll never understand why people care to fool complete strangers on the legitimacy of their watch. As long as you can live with yourself that you bought a fake then I guess that’s all that matters.
Did you get yours off the wait list or buy used? I’m currently looking at a used white dial from 2007 and considering it as a birthday present to myself
I wear a 2006 stainless steel white dial Daytona every day. In all the time I've had it on my wrist, only one person has noticed or mentioned it to me and he is a close friend. I;m not sure if it simply doesn't stand out or if people just don't know or care what it is. Regardless it is a fantastic piece of hardware and I am forever greatful for the privilege of owning and wearing it. I may never take it off.
We buy what we love. I've never loved the Daytona, but my Datejust is my favourite watch after 10 years and a couple hundred grand spent in this hobby.
In 1970 I was in Viet Nam with the US army. After a month in the jungle my cheap watch stopped working. At my next opportunity I went to the big PX in Da Nang to buy a new watch. There I saw a Rolex Oyster Date and a Bulova Accutron, at about the same price. Being a technological kind of guy, guess which watch I bought?
I personally prefer the new 321 Speedmaster. Sure, the Daytona has the association with Paul Newman, and that's all good.. but now that Omega is pretty much producing the 321 Moonwatch again, it would be a pleasure to own the ostensibly EXACT Moonwatch.
@@rawhides I don't really like the most Speedmasters, for me they are ugly... I think I like only one and that one cost even second hand like a new Navitimer... so I would buy the Breitling (if they have the wings again). And I don't care about the moon stuff, so no argument for me.
I like this watch, video , Jack and channel. I don't hold all the hype, the high auction price, anything else against this watch. This watch will survive any and all negativity and will improve with time. If ya can afford one I highly doubt you would ever regret owning and enjoying it. Thank you Jack, a week well spent.
Fortunate to have bought one from my Rolex AD after 2 1/2 year wait. $12,400 and was promptly offered $19k. It’s my favorite watch and I wear it regularly. A fabulous watch.
Love you stuff Hodinkee, big fan! Just wanted to let you know that during Jack's narrative of the Daytona history, the stuttering sliding watches (1:11 and onwards) made me kinda nauseous. :(
I know it would likely never happen, but I would love to see Rolex release a Daytona with a cleaner dial by simply removing "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified". Even move that verbiage to the case back by engraving it in a concentric fashion. It would make an amazing watch even that much better.
It’s now the only monoblock ceramic daytona ever …. The only asymmetric case Daytona - to optically balance the mass of the pushers the lug is smaller on this side Hold on to it if you have one - this will be a future icon in the Daytona lineup!
A ceramic bezel sounds very appealing. I just bought a humble Citizen titanium pro master diver and it didn’t take long until I accidentally bumped the bezel and now there is a tiny scratch on top where the numbers are painted on.
I wonder if the future Daytona collector auctions will be as profitable in view of the proliferation of super replicas of the current version of this watch. I think a lot of the hoarding being done by speculators today is going to end in tears.
Always the Paul Newman story, while the Rolex Daytona has been used in aviation and even was used on Space Shuttle Atlantis, mission STS-34 in October 1989 #MoonwatchUniverse
alongside a lot of casios... Its actually the Rolex brand that provides hype to the Daytona, other wise it would not be such a speculative item. Production standard is equal to a Speedmaster but price and organized shortages are just a marketing strategy to increase artificially the watch value. It is nowhere near the legitimate heritage of the submariner line that almost defined the reference style and specs for all dives watches to follow.
In the guitar world, which has obvious similarities as well as obvious differences, our equivalent is the '59 Les Paul. It's not right or wrong, it just is. Market forces, Clapton, Keef, Bloomfield, Moore, etc. etc. etc. What you really need to do is ask yourself a question: what do I want?
I agree, its a great watch with awesome histort, I adore the stainless steel versions and the new ceramic models, but indeed as you said its still a watch - one that I wouldnt pay over retail for :)
Thank your local rolex store for that because they literally don't ever have 1 watch 8n store because they are pumping them out the back to Julio and manny
@@driver8438 how does this exactly work? I’m obviously not in the market for a Rolex lol but how long would I need to wait if I went to a Rolex store and ordered a Submariner for the list price?

@@golfinguru11 maybe you should read up about the caliber 4130 before comparing it to other substandard chronographs with better finishing. Sure those high end chronos have better finishing but to say that they are superior to a chronograph with LiGa wheels, repairable vertical clutch, and a replaceable mainspring without totally disassemble the movement just shows that you are not a true watch collector. Just my two cents
@@Cutekid69 you mean the Aegler-made (Rolex buys manufacturers, doesn’t make anything in house) movement that takes nearly all of its inspiration from the Zenith el primero? That one? The one with a double closed back (giant rotor + oyster case) and a market price 6 times that of its closest competitor?
@@golfinguru11 I think you got the 4030 mixed up with the 4130. The 4130 is a completely different architecture from the zenith 4030. The parts count have been reduced and the running seconds hand have shifted to six o’clock from 9 o’clock. I don’t see how the 4130 took any inspiration from zenith when a lot of other chronographs also feature the 3, 6 and 9 subdial configurations like the Moonwatch with the 3861/1861. It’s like saying the AP ROOs are inspired by Valjoux 7750s with their 12, 6 and 9 subdials. Lol. Better not copy and paste any more stuff you read on the internet. Makes you look more like an idiot
I’d Iike to walk into a Rolex dealer and buy that new Daytona for $13150 and walk out of there the same day. Chances are that won’t happen. In fact by the time it comes into the store with my name on it it’ll cost me $20,000 new and it’ll be 5 generations later than when I originally walked in the store.
The 4130 has clearly taken some "inspiration" from the FP1185 Chrono. No reason to not do so though, the 1185 is a thin, tough and well designed vertical clutch and column wheel chrono. The 4130 offers meaningful improvements on it and is a great, high performance movement.
It’s rather disappointing that you did not mention that the second track is wrong on the Daytona’s dial. The movement is beating at 28,800 vph, or 8 ticks per second. Yet second markers are divided by 5 slots instead of 4. So when you use the chronograph function, you actually can’t read precisely where the second hand stopped and tell what lapse of time... you timed. So long for having a precise chronograph. This watch surely is a great watch, but this little detail keeps the watch geek in me thinking Rolex did not design this watch to be a true chronograph but rather just a jewelry piece.
Timmy Wolfy This is really only relevant if you’re extremely OCD, since human beings have a reaction time of about 2/10 of a second, the difference You describe is meaningless in terms of actually recording time. Eating that the watch is plenty accurate for its intended purpose.
Itsalgud1 you don’t seem to understand. It’s not about being OCD, it’s about designing a chronograph dial that you CAN’T READ. It’s a total non-sense to print fifths of a second on your dial if your movement is beating at 4Hz. They just printed markers where the chronograph second hand will NEVER stop. Congrats.
Timmy Wolfy You’re right, that they had never actually stops at the exact point that you would like it too, but it’s a relevant because it stops very close to that point, and so close to that point that the difference does it matter.
I have a white faced oyster Daytona purchased in 2000. I love it, it’s classy and comfortable. But I only wear it on my days off. Sadly I use an Apple Watch on work days for ease of communication with my team.
This is a watch juwelers used to give for free as an incentive for another purchase. So, the hype nowadays is crazy. If you want a superior Chronograph look at Zenith’s sellection. Rolex used Zenith’s chronograph movements for a long time in the past.
I waited only a few months for my white dial. Only a few weeks for my black dial. A few more months for my blue Sky-Dweller. I also own the yellow gold emerald green dial Daytona. Relationships. They get to know you and trust you...and like you...and the waiting list starts to vanish. ;)
There’s a list to get on the list and once on the list, its 10 years minimum. I couldn’t get on the list to get on the list and I just bought an Oyster Perpetual for my wife! I have a Speedmaster already so just bought the white Seamaster. That’s close enough to the white Daytona and no hoops to jump through to get it. The two satisfy my favourite aspects of the Daytona for me just fine!
Lol, Rolex actually released the smurf submariner (black dial, blue bezel), AFTER Pagani released PD-1661 with the same colours. Pagani's are also getting better and better, the sub 40mm, Daytona and Seamaster 007 are their current best homages for the value.

@@roger5621981 Awesome. I think I'm at 36 Rolexes right now (need to count again!)...and one Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and one Patek Philippe Nautilus (soon to be two).
Well done Jack on humanizing the large, overly detailed, design that speaks more of excess and wealth rather then balance and harmony. Rolex models seem to be approaching the suv sized ethos of some of the other trinity lines but not sure how long they’ll ride the slowly evaporating heritage of their earlier models. Let’s see if there’s still hope for a more elegant approach to their sport watches this year.
Seemingly visible flaws on the dial on the minute 3 marker and near the right subdial 29 marker? Flaws under a loupe are one thing but the naked eye is different.
Agree that it's overrated. The whole business of "scarcity", wait lists and preferred customers is a huge turn-off. Granted for those with the wherewithal and clout get one, good for them. It's a pretty watch for sure, but not worth the time, money & energy it takes for the average enthusiast to acquire.
Terrific watch BUT like so many of today’s so called luxury watches it is way over priced, not to mention these ‘fabricated shortages. That part is disgraceful.
@@npcforyou What are you comparing it too when you consider it overpriced though? Find me another automatic chronograph, with as much pedigree, and from a brand as valued as Rolex that comes in at 40mm and 12.2mm thick for $15.5K CAD. You won't. The Daytona is often compared to the Speedmaster and sure, the Speedy is about 40% the price of a new Daytona. However, by all quantifiable measurements, i.e. technical watch specs, the Daytona is a better watch in every conceivable way. So I'm just curious as to what you're comparing the Daytona to when you say it's overpriced. If you're referring to the price on the secondary market, then yes I completely agree. I would choose to be patient and wait for it to come at an AD.
@@npcforyou “Fabricated” shortages is one of the most perpetuated myths in the watch collecting community. The reason there are shortages is because when the steel, sports watch popularity exploded about 6 or 7 years ago, Rolex chose not to ramp up production to meet the demand. Why? Because they are a not-for-profit company that is owned and operated by a family trust and charity called the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. Rolex is not publically traded which is why they are not obligated to release information on the operations and finances to the public. This is why they are shrouded in so much secrecy. But, this is also why they are not looking at profit margins and the bottom line. They have no shareholders to answer to and have no interest in profits. Rather Rolex’s primary focus is on building high quality watches and protecting the legacy and heritage of the company. The popularity increased but production did not. And THAT is, in fact, why there are these absurdly long waitlists at retailers. It’s not some grand conspiracy between Rolex and their authorized retailers. It’s simply a result of the business model Rolex operates within. Basic supply and demand. Nothing more, nothing less.
@@user-oc8cl9rd9y Most people do not appreciate paying 3-4x retail! Money is relative but psychologically people want to feel like they got a deal, not screwed over in the grey market at 3 times retail prices.
@@natfingerboard well official are not the bezel only measures 38.5 I mean you can Google it you can look anywhere in the internet or you can get a pair of calipers out and measure it yourself. it is kind of amazing that they say 40 millimeters but typically people measure from the bezel if you measure it from the case like I've tried it's very difficult to get a 40 mm measurement you should try it one time or go to your local ad and measure it that way but I encourage you to go and look on Google to some of the explanations of why it's like it is
As I've thought before, I really feel like a "week on the wrist" has kind of lost it's soul. Although it's important to recognize the history and physical aspects of the watch (case, dial, movement, etc.), my favorite part of the video was everything after 6:10. In the foreseeable future, I don't see myself trying on our owning a Daytona (vintage or modern). I'm much more interested in what it's like to wear it, getting Jack's personal opinion, how the watch wears, etc.
I can see why people like them so much its a lovely looking thing and its says so much about the individual wearing it yes they probably have a lot of patience being primary,I really like the steel and Gold version again really difficult to get hold of, I have been buying things to hopefully get me up the list but i am still waiting for the call from my AD after 7 years, I wont go Grey market so maybe one day hey
I own several Daytona's and have always been a fan, but the face of the watch (text in particular) is way too busy, take it down to two lines and it would change the whole face and look so much better, its like bloomberg telling you how rich he is...the old dials especially the paul newman dials are much cleaner. Compare this face to say the omega ck2998 which I also own and there is no comparison...i also own the panda daytona and I find it much easier to tell the time... compared the daytona to say their GMT or a Sub it is harder to read the time at a glance, especially the 116520 white dial with the silver inlays...but he fails to mention the most important thing about this watch, and that is it's versatility...you can wear a daytona with a Tux and you can wear it with jeans....it always looks good and is easy to wear...these video's should really be more about the experience of wearing and a little less about the hype train...
Should change the title to a “A decade on the list”

I waited only a few months for my white dial. Only a few weeks for my black dial. A few more months for my blue Sky-Dweller. I also own the yellow gold emerald green dial Daytona. Relationships. They get to know you and trust you...and like you...and the waiting list starts to vanish. ;)
damachine3 Rolex loves people like yuuu
money talks for u i guess
Was it the Zenith Calibre 4030 as printed around 1:50 or the 4130 in 1988?
My daily love it to pieces!!
love that watch
There’s a list to get on the list and once on the list, its 10 years minimum. I couldn’t get on the list to get on the list and I just bought an Oyster Perpetual for my wife! I have a Speedmaster already so just bought the white Seamaster. That’s close enough to the white Daytona and no hoops to jump through to get it. The two satisfy my favourite aspects of the Daytona for me just fine!
Ok buddy
That's the Dink and the Rodent uploading two seemingly random Daytona reviews in the same week. Something's afoot.
@5L only flaw with this theory is it assumes basel is happening
I did it too, yesterday. Nothing planned I promise haha
Excellent video! I was very fortunate to get one from my AD at the end of 2019 when 2 others before passed on the watch.
Same here, I like the black mode
Nicky T congratulations! 👍
Nice presentation. Anyone knows the source of the background music?
Very cool, just ordered my Pagani 😎
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona... Much coveted, long desired, highly sought after... and up to the hype !
IT MAKES YOU FEEL "DRESSED" & YOU FEEL LIKE A SUPERHERO WHEN YOU ARE WEARING IT!
Is it beautiful or is the price that makes it look awesome ... ? Does it compare with vacheron overseas 2 chrono Steel ?
Love Hodinkee, but they may as well test ride a unicorn for the week.
I like the black much more. Both are iconic
Getting mine tomorrow 😍
Do we know the materials of the sub dial of both Panda and Godzilla? Somehow I thought the Panda sub dials material is the same as its bezel.
get the two tone version if u dont wanna pay a huge premium
Man these Pagani design homages are getting crazy, If Rolex keeps it up they can be a big name one day
Lol, Rolex actually released the smurf submariner (black dial, blue bezel), AFTER Pagani released PD-1661 with the same colours.
Pagani's are also getting better and better, the sub 40mm, Daytona and Seamaster 007 are their current best homages for the value.
@@Godotlv5000 indeed pagani is getting better and better only thing against them is the lack of q.a but overall decent afforable timepieces.
True story: I walked into my local Ben bridge and always talking watches for a few months they offered me this Daytona and I took it. Yes at retail
Same. I waited only a few months for my white dial. Only a few weeks for my black dial. A few more months for my blue Sky-Dweller. I also own the yellow gold emerald green dial Daytona. Relationships. They get to know you and trust you...and like you...and the waiting list starts to vanish. ;)
damachine3 agree... great collection. I now have 17 rolex so far
@@damachine3 What city?
@@roger5621981 Awesome. I think I'm at 36 Rolexes right now (need to count again!)...and one Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and one Patek Philippe Nautilus (soon to be two).
Roger Alvarado is that the one in Scottsdale, AZ?
Well done Jack on humanizing the large, overly detailed, design that speaks more of excess and wealth rather then balance and harmony. Rolex models seem to be approaching the suv sized ethos of some of the other trinity lines but not sure how long they’ll ride the slowly evaporating heritage of their earlier models. Let’s see if there’s still hope for a more elegant approach to their sport watches this year.
amazing watch!
Seemingly visible flaws on the dial on the minute 3 marker and near the right subdial 29 marker? Flaws under a loupe are one thing but the naked eye is different.
Sheesh. What a beautiful watch 😍😍
It’s not that expensive... not sure what the issue is
@@user-oc8cl9rd9y Most people do not appreciate paying 3-4x retail! Money is relative but psychologically people want to feel like they got a deal, not screwed over in the grey market at 3 times retail prices.
Nice watch just wouldn't pay over retail imo. Many other fine movements, I know its a Rolex and really nice piece.
Some people cannot differentiate between a watch review and an AD!
I love Rolex, own three, but the Daytona just doesn't do it for me... Is it just me? Not saying it's not a nice watch though. Good video.
Canada_watch I hate the modern white dial ceramic bezel. The all black one is nice but I couldn’t imagine paying double list price to get one
It's just too busy, aesthetically
It’s not worth the crazy AD price of $13,150 for a steel mass produced watch
Has anyone mentioned the flaw in the painted 3 minute marker?
I waited 2 years for mine wanted the white dial but one in black was available and i couldnt resist and am glad i got it
whyyyyy :(
@@rich8089 because i was tired of waiting 2 years
The black is definitely better. The white is nice but I think it looks feminine
@japanwatchconnection cool story bro
Should've teamed with TGV and Adrian
Where do you measure that to get the 40mm, I've tried and tried and tried never seen 40mm
what are you getting? 40mm is the official size and that's what Rolex states, but I can see it being difficult to measure it.
@@natfingerboard well official are not the bezel only measures 38.5 I mean you can Google it you can look anywhere in the internet or you can get a pair of calipers out and measure it yourself. it is kind of amazing that they say 40 millimeters but typically people measure from the bezel if you measure it from the case like I've tried it's very difficult to get a 40 mm measurement you should try it one time or go to your local ad and measure it that way but I encourage you to go and look on Google to some of the explanations of why it's like it is
Nah, watches are normally measured at the case, not the bezel. Same with the speedmaster pro - it’s officially 42mm but is more like 40mm
nice ad
As I've thought before, I really feel like a "week on the wrist" has kind of lost it's soul. Although it's important to recognize the history and physical aspects of the watch (case, dial, movement, etc.), my favorite part of the video was everything after 6:10. In the foreseeable future, I don't see myself trying on our owning a Daytona (vintage or modern). I'm much more interested in what it's like to wear it, getting Jack's personal opinion, how the watch wears, etc.
Daytona or El Primero? Hmm.. I don't know why I asked this question..I dont even have money for any of those two LoL
And you were wearing a small fortune as well.
Top tier chuffer
Nice vid! But it’s like everybody is making this week a video about the Daytona...
You mean in the Daytona 500 week? What a coincidence!
Enrico Buscaroli who cares about the Daytona? When people can watch the Champions League..
@@canerbatman2303 It's not the Rolex Cosmograph Camp Nou though
🤣 Guilty
