Regarding using books instead of tiles for Frosthaven: Isaac said in Update 46 for Frosthaven’s Kickstarter campaign that they were going to begin development on books for both Gloomhaven and Frosthaven, and that they would be big, but still fit in the footprint of their respective boxes.
this is too awesome 👌👌👌 loved the booklet format in Jaws. Cut down so much of the setup time, and the illustrations are also super cool and unique to each scenario.
Amazing. I’ll probably wait for that before jumping into the OG game as I adore this change.

Bought Jaws of the Lion game based on this playthrough. 10/10 recommend if you don't mind a little bit of fidgety cardboard movement 😉 I am currently 30hrs into the main campaign and no sign of stopping any time soon.

The first gloomhaven was a game me and my wife wanted to play until we found out this little beauty came out. Picked this up instead, mainly to see if we were going to enjoy the original, and immediately thought "Holy cow, this is super slick...." and that sentiment continued throughout. It's an amazing introduction to gloomhaven.
My wife and I started with JotL too and eventually moved on to the full game. It's a perfect introduction. I think if I'd just jumped in to the original, I'd have been overwhelmed.
It's so sad watching a channel with so much quality and personality but be so underrated because the topic is so niche

I also didn't post here. Man! Well, it was fun to watch the lovely, lovely lion. I'm glad it's put together so well.
I can't believe we will have to wait until December to play this in Australia! On a separate note, I still prefer watching a 2-hour stream with Matt and Tom than many movies.
A number of retailers have indicated they will have stock in September. I have been checking a few in Melbourne.
The big lesson from this playthrough is "don't forget to heal, and don't be afraid to Long Rest (particularly if you've got spent items to refresh)"
The final round wasn't quite as close as it looked - the Stone Golem had a Shield, so it would have had 1HP left. On the other hand, only the Null and the -2 could have saved it from Matt's last attack, so that was unlucky (though that was also due to the decision to not long rest earlier to turn the Goggles back on).
Still, it took a bit of bad luck on top of the reckless decisions, so good Gloomhaven all round.
to everyone in the US, Jaws of the Lion is sold at Target ! Very easy to find if their is one near you.
Definitely the first "real Gloomhaven" scenario of Jaws. You had a rough time but could have managed some of the aggressive approach a bit better. Still a very fun watch! WAY better editing and cameras than we have. :) Glad to see more coverage on Jaws, it's too damn fun.
Haven't bought a new game for ages. Pre-ordered this after watching your playthrough. Looks great. Game is well priced too, here in UK. Look forward to August 😀 Cheers chaps.
Amazing game, fortunately they will be adding the books for both Frosthaven and Gloomhaven I assume as an addon!
They weren't part of the kickstarter but there was talk of retro actively adding them as purchasable supplements later like the removable sticker set was.

Awww ... so envious! The prior review of Gloomhaven had me steer away and now I think I'm willing to take the plunge with this. However, you can't find this game anywhere and I was hoping to have picked it up for solo play over the US holiday weekend. Guess I can't complain since I do live in the US where it has the early release at Target ... will have to wait like the rest of the world.
I love any and all Gloomhaven content. It's my wife and my favorite of our games.

I love Gloomhaven but it’s so tedious setting up each scenario, even with apps. These books are an excellent idea and I hope they use these going forever. Endless expansion possibilities

When I heard about the tutorial style, I also immediately thought of mechs vs. minions and how great its tutorial was.
EDIT: I noticed that Matt's like "Oh let's do this in order" and corrects himself, but if I remember right, All elites of a monster type act before all normals of a monster type.
Also, I love how in general matt gets like every movement wrong.
Yes elites do go first. That's why usually we will just number elites in our games as 1, 2, 3, etc... then the normal as the rest.

I've considered gloomhaven for a long time, but seeing this coming up I think I will get it first and see if I really get into it. Plus this one looks easier to get my family in on.

@@trajanic3623 Target has been aiming to keep a consistent low stock level, so it's been in and out of stock pretty much constantly ever since the initial release. Online stock is either unreliable or getting bought up by bots/scalpers as fast as it's announced, but if you go to a physical store, a lot of people have reported finding copies that way (often on endcaps in unexpected places, or by asking the right employee - though since I don't imagine most people who just walk into the shop and find it on shelf in the boardgame section will bother to report their experience, there's going to be a lot of selection bias in the reports).
So no guarantees, but if you go looking, there's a reasonable chance you will find it.
Just play dnd its what most people use the contents after trying to deal with the very dry combat system
If you have access to D&D or any other dungeon crawl game, go for those. This game does very little in the way uniqueness, gets monotonous very fast (as you you'll be doing the same thing every game with very little differences between them) and everything takes forever to do.
Too many fiddly components!
Zero decent storage options out of the box.
Extreme set up and pack up times.
The "excitement" and gimmicks wear thin fairly quickly.
The personalized action deck is nice, but incredibly limited.
Improvements take forever to obtain/"unlock".
Missions/quests (of what I've played) are linear. Failure has you replay the mission.
Every mission/quest comes down to 3 choices which conflict progress with each other. You can: finish the mission (co-op), finish your personal objectives (not co-op for most part), or grab loot (not co-op as its first come first serve, no sharing allowed). You do one of them, but sometimes you may be able to do 2 things.
Given I spent AU$300 for the main game (second print) and sub-optimal storage inserts (not including postage), I didn't bother getting anything else. I don't know if the extra material actually adds and changes elements to make this fun for more than a few game sessions, but if it takes an expansion to make a game fun then it's not really worth it.
If you play Warhammer Quest, you've pretty much got a similar experience, with dice rolling in place of constant deck shuffling. You can also get WHQ on PC and Ipad which eliminates components and physical space requirements. Also cheaper.

It's totally fallen flat. The mechanics are so fiddly and technical, and you have to juggle a hand of attack cards that gradually get depleted as the scenario unfolds.
Every scenario basically plays the same, just with slightly different opponents. There is no genuine sense of discovery. And if there are large numbers of creatures, each turn can take ages, with fiddly hit point tokens to keep track of.
We enjoyed D&D Tomb of Annihilation much better. Scenarios are genuinely variable, lots of action, 20-sided dice for attacks, and the map unfolds gradually as you progress through a scenario. Will this be a dead-end with traps? Or have we stumbled across a horde of monsters? When will we turn the corner to find the final boss monster? Simple yet genuinely gripping.
You guys should look into playing using 360 Video camera to reduce the amount of camera management you need to do. Seems like a practical application for the tech.

I love, love, love big Gloomhaven, and I've pledge for Frosthaven, but my friends and I took a break from big Gloomhaven to play this bity baby Gloomhaven, and we're having a ton of fun with it. I really really really hope they do the books with Frosthaven. Isaac recently sent out an update for Frosthaven discussing the books and he seems to be leaning towards tiles because they make it easier to do random dungeons. But honestly, how many people really did just random dungeons??
Isaac's announcement was actually that he couldn't switch out the tiles for books in Frosthaven for a number of reasons (including random dungeons), but that based on the response to the books in JotL, he would be releasing book versions for both Gloomhaven and Frosthaven as a separate purchase later on. Best of both worlds, hooray!
Isaac is considering a scenario book/map for Frosthaven as an add-on.

Oddly enough, I'd recommend Inis. It's not story driven (but then again how long are you going to be waiting? Probably don't want to get stuck in a long story-based game.) Inis is competitive rather than cooperative, but what it does have is a battle-by-cards mechanism that you need to puzzle your way through.
Thunder stone quest, not really like gloomhaven but it’s a fun deck builder with a campaign (I use that loosely since the story isn’t great but it is a fun game) another one but it is super heavy is mage knight the board game which is an adventure game with card management and deck building

Frosthaven NEEDS to throw away the tiles and get everything into campaign books instead. Seems way more fun and would cut down on the setup time, plus you get custom art for all the rooms.
I still want the tiles so that I can make custom scenarios, but the campaign book seems like a must.
The kickstarter campaign announced a map book is coming but not with the initial release. They actually mentioned custom scenarios, guest designers, and flexibilty as pros of tiles. They beleieved doing their guest scenarios with a book would delay release a long time aince the scenarios dont exist yet. Its an interesting compromise.
Lovin Jaws of the Lion! My only gripe is that the player boards and dials are so unnecessarily big. You could just use tokens for health and experience, and you really only need like a card sized player board probably. Otherwise, everything else is so nice.

yeah, it took me and my girlfriend 3 tries in the same night, last one was at around 7 AM and it included me surviving with one health, being saved by the modifier. CRAZY INTENSE!!
Why wouldn't they have an a3 scenario book rather than a4? Same amount of paper, but you end up with the binding coil on the left hand edge rather than in the center of the map.
In my experience manuals and books and stuff are generally pretty close to the same size as the box's footprint. If that's the case here (and it seems like it is), then having an A3 book would mean doubling the box size, and a large part of the reason for JotL's existence is to better fit on shelves at retailers like Target
@@wheeler68 Yeah makes sense. Opportunities for nice book-based maps seem to open up more at A3 though - including an A1 map with a supplementary book. Maybe if other games went this route, a slim A3 box could still work

The +1 that they draw as part of disadvantage isn't included, that's why its disadvantage!
The +1 doesn't come from the attack modifier card (which is ignored due to disadvantage). It comes from the attack card stating what the creatures do on their turn (ie Attack +1, rage 3). These cards were a red colour in base Gloomhaven, and were unique to different types of enemies.
For Christ sake. I could hold myself off from buying the big box because its neither beginner- nor solofriendly ... now comes this small one and the european (at least german) release is OCTOBER! Ffs I want JotL so bad :D (I would even buy the english version but every retailer here seems to wait for the translation to sell both simultaneously...
I so badly want to like this game. I spent $150 and bought gloomhaven a while back, read through the entire rule book, bought the removable sticker pack so we could play it multiple times through, and brought in my friends and wife, and I just don’t think any of us really had fun with it. We’ve all played D&D together before, and I think all of us felt like this was just a more rigid version of D&D without the personality and fun of D&D. I cannot stress how excited I was for this game. Maybe I’m missing something. I kind of hope so even, because even after all the disappointment the first time, I still really WANT to like this game
There’s not much role playing in Gloomhaven beyond the branching story. The appeal is more he combat engine and not needing a DM.
One thing that helps a lot with liking gloomhaven is having everyone download the app. It cuts half an hour of busy work out of the game which really improves the experience
3 years later, but just to let you know that they recently announced an RPG version of Gloomhaven which sounds like it's going to be much more similar to D&D. Might be something you're interested in.

What's the experience like using elemental magic in Gloomhaven? Is it fun when you get it set up or do people just ignore it? I was wondering about a house rule where if you step it down a phase you could turn it into the element that you need and wanted some feedback.
Elemental Magic is actually fairly well thought out. Several items and classes are based around the way elements work. Some classes don't do anything with elements, others require you to make specific choices to make use of elements. It's also worth noting that many monsters consume elements to change or upgrade their attacks. I would recommend only changing it after you've played the game a lot and have a strong handle of the ebb and flow of the mechanics.
Considering the current situation in the world, you could review Pathologic.
"Bloodborne might be the best..." Yep, you got that right! Much respect for recognizing an epic video game as a board game reviewer! It's one of my favorite games of all time, both Bloodborne and Gloomhaven.

The problem is that your character must retire. You can never go full bad-ass.
Jaws of the Lion doesn't have character retirement.
Additionally, play the game as you like and go full bad-ass

The game looks...ok? If this is what Gloomhaven is then I’m glad I never got it. I have Sword & Sorcery and while I’ve set it up multiple times, it never got played (same with Wrath of Ashardalon) Maybe these games just aren’t for me any more? Strange considering I love Hero Quest and Dungeons & Dragons. These games just seem like what 4th edition D&D was all about (encounters) and people poo-poo’d the hell out of that. Odd.
I’d be curious to know if anyone played this (or Gloomhaven) and could expound on why it’s soooooooo much better than Sword & Sorcery or Descent or....
I used to love Descent but don’t play it now because Gloomhaven has superseded it in most senses. Not needing a GM/ DM is an advantage for me and although Descent now has an app to act as the DM, it’s not built into the game from the ground up. Most turns in Descent are broadly similar (move, rolls some dice, figure out what all the symbols mean, do some damage, maybe use a special power). It’s a fun dungeon crawler and I had a lot of fun with it.
Gloomhaven offers more of an evolving puzzle with more interesting tactical choices at each turn. Your deck of cards define your characters actions, your stamina and (in part) your health. Rather than being limited to a couple of choices (do I move or attack twice?) each turn you are presented with a suite of actions and options. Some are simply moves or attacks (indeed every card doubles as a base attack or base move) but across all the characters (4 in JOTL and 17 in GH) there is a huge variety of actions (summon creatures, push, pull, create obstacles, heal, curse enemies etc) all offering a choice. As you go through the missions your options narrow (through fatigue) until you’re making hard choices each turn. We generally play on “hard” difficulty and we’ve had so many last gasp wins from the jaws of defeat in “full” Gloomhaven that are seared into our collective memory. It’s brilliant (but you really, really want a spare table to leave big Gloomhaven set up as the set-up/ tear down time is substantial).
I’ve not even mentioned the elements, enhancements (such a great way), your (unique) modifier deck with perks, battle goals, life goals or prosperity that add extra layers to (big) GH. It’s the best game I’ve ever played. I’m merely sad that we’ve pretty much finished it
I love you guys. Was in the first 1000 subs back in the day. However PLEASE stop eating on camera. Try to have that small bit of professionalism. It's a small thing but people WILL turn off at that point. It's a world video not "Dinner at Matt's house"
