  • Join us for a little overnight snowshoeing adventure in the Austrian Alps. Otto and I met up with my sister and headed out for two days of winter hiking in the Radstädter Tauern. We had amazing weather, beautiful views and slept in a cosy mountain hut - for the first time ever in winter which was definitely a highlight.
    Love,
    Elli and Otto

    Oh wow awesome, what a lovely video. So beautiful there , great seeing Otto leading the way and walking behind in your steps in the snow. Toppers all of you walking on snow shoes that's hard going . Great to see your sister again. Take care all 🌷

    Lovely to watch this little adventure with Otto and your sister, Johanna. Gosh! Snowshoes look like a lot of hard work - luckily I will never need them in Devon UK! Well done to all three of you - keep the adventures going on...! Lets Go! M.

      Thank you so much for following along, I really appreciate that! Hahaha, yes - it's definitely slow going with snowshoes but also a lot easier/less strenuous in deep snow with the bigger surface :)

    I used to lead hut to hut snowshoe treks in Austria. Wonderful times, great hut meals and, of course, a dunkel bier with dinner. Excellent film Ellie 😊

      Thank you so much! The Austrian Alps are just stunnig :) I love hut hiking, but so far I only did it in summer as it's very hard to find huts that are open in winter AND allow dogs. But it was such a great experience hiking up there in the snow :)

    Awesome video Ms Elli 😃
    Such a beautiful wintry wonderland😍
    The drone footage was a nice touch too.
    Watching ya’ll breaking the snow surface made my arthritic knees and hips ache😳😂
    Oh to be young again 🙏🏻
    The mountain hut was beautiful with all the bare wood, always love older wooden construction.
    Johanna has great tastes too I see, Nutella, boiled eggs and cheese on the go😋
    So happy for you and Otto and your sister enjoying hiking together again😃
    Thank you so much for sharing another wonderful video with us.
    Please give Otto a head scratch, take care, keep safe and see ya next time👍🏻🙏🏻😃☺️

      Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words and your comments always make me smile :) Thanks for noticing the drone - it's been one of the first times I've been using it and it's a lot harder than I thought it would be 😅 still have to get used to it! The hut was really stunning, the wood just makes it so cosy and warm :) Thank you for following along :)

      You’re very welcome Ms Elli 😃
      I’m so happy to be able to bring a smile ☺️
      Looks like you’re off to a very good start with using it, your videos are always wonderfully done, the drone takes them up another notch when you will use the added footage as possible👍🏻
      Otto looked like he was enjoying the snow as much as you guys were❄️😃
      Comfy and cozy, wood just seems warmer and more relaxing too I think.
      Thank you again Ms Elli and till next time, take care, give Otto a pat and have a wonderful day👍🏻🙏🏻😃☺️

    Another impressive video Elli. Thank you for posting. Stunning scenery, breathtaking 👍🏻
    Hard work slogging through the snow ⛄️ everything takes twice as long with twice the energy sapping energy.
    +A noble effort from Otto. I wonder if he struggled? He seemed quite happy to tag along 🐶

      Thank you so much for following along and the encouragement, that means so much! Otto seemed totally fine as it wasn't cold at all and the snow on most parts wasn't that deep (or he followed our tracks where he didn't sink in). Almost perfect conditions for us :)

    It's nice to see you have so much fun on this trip. Snowschoeing is a higher level of hiking, so for sure it wasn't as easy as usually.
    You mention in one moment that you are sweating a bit - in cold temperatures it's more undesirable. In this case smth like mesh base layer could help - for example Brynje or Aclima. For me works perfect, pity I didn't know about it earlier...

    That looked like a fun walk😀I have never tried walking with snowshoes,or «truger» as we call them. Little Otto handled the snow so well. 👑I got a ( perhaps stupid)question: can dogs get snowblind, like humans sometimes do? I hope you had an enjoyable time with your sister,lots of smiles and giggles. 🌸

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much, Elina :) Really appreciate the kind words and you following along! No, that's a great question (was asking that myself): From what I read, dogs can also get snowblind but it's very rare as they have more pigment in their eyes. There are even goggles for dogs too and dogs that are exposed to a lot of sun (in the desert or dogs that are in the snow for a lot of the time) apparently could benefit from them...

    Hello Elli and friends! Again very beautiful pictures from a magical winter mountain landscape. How did you actually solve the problem of navigation and wayfinding? Route descriptions, directions route markers, Garmin or smartphone?? Keep it up!!😊

    I'm amazed at Otto every week.How does he maintain his energy in those difficult conditions??Are his paws used to snow?😊

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  5 месяцев назад

      He has just a lot of energy and loves to explore and is always eager to go out for hikes. I sometimes think that he wants to make up for the time he was living in a cage in a shelter (first 3 years of his life)... 😔 We have quite a few days/weeks of snow everey year in our area, so he's kind of used to snow. But his paws are just toughened up in general from our hikes. He didn't have any issues since we started hiking regularly....

  • @Daytona2
    @Daytona2 5 месяцев назад +1

    Well timed , Elli - the snow level looked just right 😊
    Otto was loving it! He was walking so close to the snow shoes I wondered if he was trying to get on! 😂
    Did you have sleeping bags, just in case it was too cold in the hut ?

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, true - it was perfect :) Not too challenging for hiking and not too deep for Otto. He always walks too close to someone if he wants to overtake but can't 😂. He usually likes to walk a lot faster than me which is why he's in front of me a lot of the time and he's used to that. But we made him follow us in some areas of deeper snow so that it wouldn't be too drainig for him and so that the could follow the snowshoes tracks where the snow was compressed and not too deep for to sik in too much.
      We didn't take sleeping bags, they always have extra blankets. I probably would have if the temperatures were forecast to be really low, but this wasn't the case last week :)

    That looked like fun. I've never used snowshoes but I did go cross-country skiing (langlauf) in Austria many years ago. I assume Otto is light enough not to break through the snow crust? Or do you have to carry him at times?

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much :) It was fun indeed, Otto loves the snow and the mountains are just stunning :) Otto mostly followed our tracks where the snow was compressed and not too deep for him and on the second day the snow was frozen and Otto really was light enough to walk on it most of the time 😅😍 Didn't have to carry him :)
