Thanks your tutorial was great! My dad wasn't around to remind me today all the steps to change my oil and this jogged my memory perfectly and got me through for the first time by myself!! Very much appreciate the time you took to make this video.
Thanks for posting, I just finished my first oil and filter change on my new jeep, bought it in Feb and has 2,800 miles as of today, Didn't want to go to the dealer and sit in the waiting room for two hours have them screw it up. I used the same oil as you did, was very easy, thanks again for posting this.
Thanks for the video. After years off the "Change Your Own Oil" job I'm back on it and didn't want to miss any new tech over the years. Couldn't be easier 🙂
The Jeep has to be the easiest oil change in the history of oil changes. Revolutionary ! I was able to change the oil in under 10 min, including filter. As apposed to my mustang, which at best is 30-40 min. This includes getting on the ramp, crawling under to get to drain plug than taking the under skirt off to get to the filter.
I have a JK Wrangler. I agree the oil change is easy, but my 3.8 Town and Country is even easier. The filter is mounted vertically under the front of the engine. Both it and the drain plug can be easily reached from the front with the van sitting on the ground. No jacks or ramps required, and with the vertical mounting position of the filter you don't spill a drop. An oil change for the T&C is almost like a NASCAR pit stop.
Anytime I have new jeep owners ask me where I get my oil changed I tell em I do it myself *been doing it for the last year by myself thanks to this video* then advise em to come watch this video super easy to follow.
It is because of great videos like yours that I was able to do my own oil changes. It is not so much the savings because it can be minimal at best. I think it helps you know your vehicle better and it really is a very quick job to do it yourself. Thanks again John!
Be aware that this video was on a pre 2014 Pentastar engine. All 2014 and later Pentastar engines have a different (better) oil filter housing, which requires a different filter insert, the newer Mopar filter part number is MO-349. The early type filter caps were a solid plastic hex on top. The 2014+ caps that hex is hollowed out. In both cases, do not over-tighten the cap or you may crack the housing and/or cap. The o-ring in the cap will hold the cap in place just fine with the cap being hand tight.
Thank you I had no idea where my oil filter was. Of course I hadn't looked yet. Very surprising that it's a canister style and up on top of the motor thank you for the great video

When you pulled the oil filter in the video, had you drained the oil already? Or was it that non-drippy already? And, does oil spill from around the oil filter housing onto the engine, or is that area all clean?
No, the oil filter was pulled first and was not dripping oil when pulled. I would suggest have a rag available so when you pull the filter, hold the rag underneath it.

The top is plastic, so the torque is super low. A quick Google search will get you the exact torque specs so you don’t over tighten and crack the housing.
you forgot to mention the part about resetting the oil light by pumping the gas pedal with the key turned half way.. that's how my 2016 is anyway. thanks for the video
So I changed my oil using this video. Really easy. But when I checked my dip stick I had the tip have gloss on it. But not the whole thing like yours would you recommend I put more oil in it. I put 6 quarts in it
dominic acosta 6 quarts is all you should use. Start the engine and let the oil pump thru the engine (5-10 minutes) and the shut it down and recheck. If your level is still to low, take it to your Jeep dealer or have a mechanic check it out.
One other question how often do you change your oil on your Jeep. I use good oil like mobile 1 so wondering if I can go 5000 miles instead of 3 . What do you recommend?
I'm a little confused. I used a different video when i changed my oil. Yours shows the oil filter being installed into the oil filter housing opposite of the other video. So, the flush part of the filter goes into the housing and the little extended "tip" would be exposed. Which way is correct or does it matter??? Great video!!!
D E there is only one way the filter can be installed, and the “clips” connect to the inner part of the cap when you remove it, this is what keeps the filter in place. You can see this in the video when I remove it from the engine.
My Jeep is a 2015 and just replaced the oil filter housing. The new oil filter housing is on revision number 6. Obviously there have been some changes to the filter housing to make it last longer and better. Those revisions may explain the noted differences.
ck40711 that is a debate that you would get pros and cons on both sides. I’ve run synthetic in all of my vehicles from brand new to older vehicles and never had any issues.
I was seeing the same thing. . . some people swore by synthetic, others said use regular non-synthetic. I might just alternate each oil change. . . going Pennzoil full synthetic for this first one. Thanks for the advice and the video.
18 ft. Lb. Is the spec.when tightening the oil filter cap. Do not overtighten, can crack oil filter/oil cooler housing. This is made of plastic and you would have to remove intake manifold to replace this.
I bought my 2017 JKU a couple months ago now and I have been thinking about where to go for the oil change.... But after seeing the simplicity.. I'm going to give it a try myself. I do have a question though... I got it at 7 miles... The dealer never told me when to get my oil changed... Do you do it at 3k or 5k?
Yes, it really is that simple. If you just purchased your 2017 Wrangler, check with your dealer to see if they had included oil changes. Typically they will give you the first 3 (or a year) free. If not, yep just follow along with the video. As for frequency of the change, I would suggest on the earlier than the later side, especially when new. If you start using synthetic oils, you may be able to extend miles before changing.
Ilja, there was no noticeable gains in fuel with the K&N drop in air filter, nor the Royal Purple oil. I use royal purple because of the advanced protection, especially when driving off-road. I replaced my air intake with a R2C Cold Air Intake not too long ago, finalizing the video now. After I installed the R2C, I did see a noticeable gain in MPG.
Thank you John for posting another great video. You're getting better MPG than I do with my 35's! So now I am convinced and will proceed with similar upgrade :)
thanks for sharing, i have question, if we change the engine oil the indicator inside dasboard is stop warning us to change the oil or we have reset the indicator after that...thanks
No, it will not clear the notification automatically. You would need to manually reset the indicator. At the time I did mine, it was not on, so I did not record that process. Turn the ignition switch to the on/run position but do not start the engine. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 10 seconds. Turn the ignition switch back to the off/lock position. Should be clear now. Hope this helps.
thanks for this video! looks super easy! will be changing the oil on my '14 JKU next weekend. I bought the exact same oil you have. What's your opinion and experience with the RP oil?
whydontyou96 thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. I have been using Royal Purple oil in all my vehicles for about 12 years now and I have never had an issue with any engine. I would guess that just about all of the synthetics are relatively the same, however my luck I know the moment I change it to something else Murphy's law steps in. I also use the Royal Purple gear fluid for the axles, never an issue.
Janesnapdo changing the transmission fluid and filter is not done that often, maybe at 100k miles. I’ll see if I can do a vid when I do mine. Changing out the transmission fluid does get messy though 😉
Thanks for sharing. I have changed oil a lot and just did for the first time on my 2014 Wrangler. Now my low pressure light is coming on. I put in 5 qts of Castrol 5w20 and 1 qt of Lucas oil. Any idea what's up? I always have the service station put in a at if Lucas. Oil level is good. Thank you
Nathan, my first instinct would be to validate that you have the rubber seal around the cap that you removed with the filter. This may cause a pressure drop due to the seal nit setting correctly. If that is not the issue, I would suggest taking to your dealer ASAP. You should still be under warranty and I would suggest not driving it around extensively with a potential issue with your oil pump or something else.
You should not need to lift your Jeep to do an oil change. You do want to make sure the Jeep is on a level surface or if you do need to jack up your Jeep to get under it, make sure it is level and you have proper support underneath for safety. I would suggest that you use ramps to drive up on in place of using the jack to lift your Jeep higher.
A 2014 Jeep Rubicon uses a different oil filter FYI or guys who are watching this because I just made a mistake. I just got my new Jeep Unlimited and wanted to change the oil myself.
Ello Ello Yes, even though the engine is the same Jeep has been using different oil viscosity and part numbers. The process to change your oil is the same, just make sure to check your owners manual for the specific part numbers to use.
OPPS! The oil filter in your video does not fit the 2016 3.6L. use 68191349AB so its told. I will verify if after going back to the parts dealer. The other thing is it is not listed in the owners manual. Mopar is loosing points in my book.
Mike Ferriera yeah, it seems Mopar likes to changes things up with the same engine. I know from other comments that they even recommend different oil viscosities for the 2012 version 2013 engine same 3.6L VVT engine. I wonder if they improved the filter performance with the newer model you mention. If you find out, please post back. Thanks!
mtb_d4n yes, no need to replace the bolt and washer. The only time you would want to replace a washer is if it is a “crush” washer, those are a 1 time use.
The oil that you poured in (@5:45) was pretty dark / dirty - is Royal Purple dark like that? Also thoughts on Synthetic vs. Dino oil? I usually only run Synthetic. What about resetting the Oil Life computer setting? Great video for folks that need to be able to do things themselves.
FantmVirus as for resetting the oil change reminder: Step 1: Turn the ignition switch to the on/run position but do not start the engine. Step 2: Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 10 seconds. Step 3: Turn the ignition switch back to the off/lock position. Tada!
I have a 2014 JK and the filter is slightly different. Mopar Part # MO-349. And it does need to be Mopar filter because I changed it once with a a filter i picked up at a parts store and it caused my engine to throw an error code saying I had a faulty Oil Pressure Sensor.
Hello... I change the oil today, and everything looks good bit just realized that I put 5w-20 synthetic but doesn't say SAE.. if Si Me now if that gonna be a problem?
Samuel Ham What does SAE 5W-30 mean? The short answer: The numbers represent the viscosity of the oil and the W stands for WINTER. The long answer: The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has established a numerical code system for grading motor oils according to their viscosity characteristics. What type of oil did you get?
Thanks for the video instructions. Does anyone know if SAE 0W-20 Valvoline SynPower 0W-20 is okay aswell to use for V6 JK 2015? The oil is marked Chrysler MS-6395 approved
Topics, glad I could help. I would suggest contacting your Jeep service department with that question. Your jeep is relatively new and the oil model should be clearly stated in your manual as well as on the oil fill plug. You should stay with the engine requirements for warranty reasons as well.
+John Golden (RockTrooper) 0w-20 seems to be alright according to JK forum I recently checked and the Oildealer checked what oils are recommended for JK V6 2015. It is suggested that especially with the cold weather we have here in Sweden, its smoother to start engine with lower viscosity, e.g. Cold starts. I agree howevert that the Jeep service department has the last say. I hope it to be flexible; I already changed oil. :-)
the_friend do you mean "priming" the filter? Or are you referring to the rubber gasket around the filter? In either case, any information I had found mentioned nothing about priming or grading any components before they are installed. If you happen to find something, please post back

I see that you didn’t use a torque wrench, how did you know when is safe to stop tightening?
The top is plastic, so the torque is super low. A quick Google search will get you the exact torque specs so you don’t over tighten and crack the housing.
you forgot to mention the part about resetting the oil light by pumping the gas pedal with the key turned half way.. that's how my 2016 is anyway. thanks for the video
how did you manage to get a thumbs down??? anybody giving this a thumbs down probably has room temperature IQ
James Mariano 27 or them to be exact, I think they are all from auto dealers or oil change places, taking away their business! LOL 😂
I don't know, why do people like you worry about it and post the same dumb question on virtually every RUclips video?
I put platinum synthetic Pennzoil 5w-20
So I changed my oil using this video. Really easy. But when I checked my dip stick I had the tip have gloss on it. But not the whole thing like yours would you recommend I put more oil in it. I put 6 quarts in it
dominic acosta 6 quarts is all you should use. Start the engine and let the oil pump thru the engine (5-10 minutes) and the shut it down and recheck. If your level is still to low, take it to your Jeep dealer or have a mechanic check it out.
I put in a little more and it's fine so probably just needed a tad more thanks
One other question how often do you change your oil on your Jeep. I use good oil like mobile 1 so wondering if I can go 5000 miles instead of 3 . What do you recommend?
dominic acosta depends how often I take it off-road, I would say on average around 5000 miles.
RockTrooper cool thank you
I'm a little confused.
I have a 2014 Wrangler. . . wondering if I should use synthetic or not?
ck40711 that is a debate that you would get pros and cons on both sides.
Thanks so much man, this for sure helped a lot of us save some money!!!
William Green thanks for the feedback, glad it helped!
18 ft. Lb. Is the spec.when tightening the oil filter cap. Do not overtighten, can crack oil filter/oil cooler housing. This is made of plastic and you would have to remove intake manifold to replace this.
you never said what year this was? this info would be helpful and you did the same thing with the oil drain bolt no mention that it is a 13 mm
Very classy video, thanks a million!
Steven Eldred thanks for the feedback, glad the video helped!
Other videos made such a big deal about changing the filter & cross threading the filter cap
Just be careful and don’t rush it.
RockTrooper I'll call them up and find out! Appreciate the info and help!
I think you should tell people the torque specs on the oil pan plug as well as the oil filter.
Couldn’t see from the video if you jacked the car up before draining. Advice on that?
You do not need to lift your Jeep to change the oil, unless you are unable to get under it to remove the oil drain plug.
Thank you for good and detailed video!
Did you notice any increase in MPG by using Royal Purple and K&N air filter?
Thank You!
+Ilja Vorontsov BTW, you can see the R2C CAI install video here: ruclips.net/video/xWZumq0XWDc/видео.html
You may want to tighten your drain plug and filter house just a bit more. Great video thanks
Meaghan Culver thanks for the feedback, appreciate it!
thanks for this video! looks super easy! will be changing the oil on my '14 JKU next weekend.
The oil filter mo 744 doesnt fit 2014 engines, only 11 thru 13
Can you teach how to change de transmission oil and filter too..please?
Janesnapdo changing the transmission fluid and filter is not done that often, maybe at 100k miles. I’ll see if I can do a vid when I do mine. Changing out the transmission fluid does get messy though 😉
I second that request. I'm only at 24k miles on my 2016 JKU Rubi, but when that time comes I'm sure your video will be the best!
Great job. I would have added how to reset the change oil indicator
Hi John ! Thank you so much for this video. But i was wondering, do you always change the filter when you change your oil ?
Hey Romeo, thanks for the feedback. Yes, every time I do an oil change I do change the filter as well, just best practice IMO.
5 quarts brings mine to the full mark. Owners manual says 5 quarts too. 🤷🏻♂️ 2012 3.6L
What is the proper torque to tighten the oil filter?
18ft lbs from what I have found. www.wranglerforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=228507&d=1364497815
Thank you
It's also SAE 5w20
Nathan, my first instinct would be to validate that you have the rubber seal around the cap that you removed with the filter. This may cause a pressure drop due to the seal nit setting correctly. If that is not the issue, I would suggest taking to your dealer ASAP. You should still be under warranty and I would suggest not driving it around extensively with a potential issue with your oil pump or something else.
+John Golden (RockTrooper) Thank you, John. I'm thinking that may be the case. Dealer is backed up but I'm having them change the oil now.
+Nathan Jones anytime. Hope they find and resolve the issue. Happy Jeeping!
+John Golden (RockTrooper) It was the wrong size oil filter. Bought from Auto Zone. What a pain. Glad it's resolved, though.
does the jack that comes with the car do a good enough job to lift it for an oil change?
You should not need to lift your Jeep to do an oil change. You do want to make sure the Jeep is on a level surface or if you do need to jack up your Jeep to get under it, make sure it is level and you have proper support underneath for safety. I would suggest that you use ramps to drive up on in place of using the jack to lift your Jeep higher.
thanks man
Got to the oil filter and that one does not fit my 2014 jeep wrangler. Other than that thanks for help.
That damn near looks just like MY Jeep. White, Warn Xeon Winch, Grill Mesh painted Red. :) But I have a mopar hoodlock.
insylem at least there is 2 Jeep owners with awesome taste!
How hard is it to take the plastic engine cover off and put it back on property?
traekwon taylor not hard. There are a couple of grommets you just need to line up then press down on it.
Thanks!
Does the airdam have to be removed when draining oil from oil pan?
Not required, but I would say you can to get a better flow. Just make sure nothing gets in there.
what year is this jeep?
JOE FORD DIY 2013
Did you use a new drain bolt and washer, or did you use the same one?
mtb_d4n yes, no need to replace the bolt and washer. The only time you would want to replace a washer is if it is a “crush” washer, those are a 1 time use.
Should say that you have an after marker cap and filter. There are 2
After oil change the engin light is on. What is the problem? Can l somehow reset vor switch it off? Thank you in advance.
FantmVirus yes the Royal Purple is a dark purple color. I did not reuse/recycle it back in, all brand new fluid.
Tada!
Thanks! Never tried Royal Purple. Always a Mobile 1 guy - but will look @ it for the JKU - thanks again.
FantmVirus anytime, glad I could help!
I have a 2014 JK and the filter is slightly different. Mopar Part # MO-349. And it does need to be Mopar filter because I changed it once with a a filter i picked up at a parts store and it caused my engine to throw an error code saying I had a faulty Oil Pressure Sensor.
Do I need to update system in the Jeep or just leave like that... Is the maintenance sign will appear if I don’t do that?
Never mind, I got the answer!!
What size socket for filter and drain plug?
Enzo Amore both the sizes are stated at the 1:20 mark in the video.
My 2019 Jeep Rubicon unlimited 3.6 l uses 5 quarts check your manual first
where did you get that oil pan ? i like how deep it is.
Msleelee94 Williams you can get them at most auto retail stores. For example, this one: amzn.to/2sxvj8g
RockTrooper awesome thanks im ordering me one today thanks for the video
Msleelee94 Williams anytime! Glad I was able to help
+John Golden (RockTrooper)
0w-20 seems to be alright according to JK forum I recently checked and the Oildealer checked what oils are recommended for JK V6 2015. It is suggested that especially with the cold weather we have here in Sweden, its smoother to start engine with lower viscosity, e.g. Cold starts. I agree howevert that the Jeep service department has the last say. I hope it to be flexible; I already changed oil. :-)
do you need to grease the gasket before you put it back in?
the_friend do you mean "priming" the filter? Or are you referring to the rubber gasket around the filter? In either case, any information I had found mentioned nothing about priming or grading any components before they are installed. If you happen to find something, please post back
RockTrooper I was just talking about the rubber gasket but if you haven't seen nothing then I'll believe ya lol great vid super easy
the_friend yep, super easy. Save time and money from going to the dealer!
Very good ! I will try 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏼
