My pet peeve is when “pro” anglers refer to the working guy as a “weekend warrior”. Weekend Warriors fish the weekend because they’re working during the week. Many weekend anglers are committed and passionate anglers.

Back in the day we had the Red Man Tour, Midwest Bass, and a host of others and it was frowned upon to have pros fish these events, they were truly the working mans circuit. When you get down to it from an advertising perspective, the only reason companies spend their PR bucks on the BASS and MLF tours is due to TV exposure, We need to crack the code and get the PR folks to realize that bang from their buck comes from the good ol boys level, not folks paid to pump up the appeal of so and so's bait.

So the way you do that would be possible but it would involve doing something that the fishing community might not respect out of loyalty and that’s basically taking BASS/BASSMASTER & MLF out behind the barn. WE NEED A NATIONAL UNION OF FISHERMEN THATS ADVOCATING FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF AND CONSERVATION OF THE SPORT AS A WHOLE! This would warrant US THE ANGLERS to seek out cooperative and collaborative efforts with Wildlife And Fishers, Fishing and Marine Companies, as well as setting a standard of rules that’s followed on a universal scale when it comes to tournaments across the board. This is set apart from recreational bass angling but yet a standard for any bass angler that takes the sport seriously. This would also need a massive financial dedication & backing that could be attained by membership, fundraising, tournaments, and donations, grants, etc etc. Also working in efforts nationally with political figures to make sure that fisheries are being maintained and handled to an even higher standard then currently. This in turn would give power to the union to hold companies and markets to a standard that’s benefiting anglers and companies. We need big names in and out of the sport and big figures to join in and see the objective is for the betterment of the anglers and the sport. This union in turn could also be a 3 independent party to help determine and discrepancies during tournament and would also remove the liability of Tours being frowned upon for not executing proper and appropriate disciplinary actions for cheating and other violations. Also would allow for independent polygraphs to be exercised in a way where is again fair and even. The union would create two leagues that tournaments & tours would register under as traditional or non traditional tournaments. Basically meaning one is set with a standard of 150 max hp rating and use of basic electronics like flashers and 2-d sonar and basic down scan. fishing with minimal tackle and no boat accessories such as powerpoles, hydro waves, trolling brakes, and the other advance electronics like 360, and any FFS SYSTEM. Non traditional would be basically how the sport is now but with regulation on how much stuff can be allowed on the boat. This in turn would reset & revitalize the sport and the industry because right now the market is horrible all around and it’s because the sport is really suffering. The majority of people with opinions on the future of the sport haven’t been fishermen for a good decade yet alone 20+ years. We have to do something because right now it’s just not happening. It’s unfolding in a way that is going to kill the sport and make it a joke amongst sports. We have to get back to understand this is a lifestyle not just a sport or hobby. We all started this for a purpose and we shouldn’t just let anyone tarnish that!!!

I think I fished a few Redman ( or Ironman) bass fishing tournaments back when I was stationed at Ft Hood ( now Ft Cavasos). I loved the feeling of competition and the “game day” feel of the experience. If my buddy was telling me correctly we had actually let go the fish that would have won us the tournament because we though surely someone else had caught more and bigger fish. Apparently the weigh master told him no one weighed in a legal fish and we had one each that was over the limit. We weighed in ever legal fish after that.

I’ve always said if they had a camera guy on the boat during some grass level team events they’d make good tv. Local buddies got 4 fish in the box with and hour to go and get lucky land a huge fish. The raw emotion they would catch would sell hugeeeee

You don't need no stinking boat, kayak or otherwise.
Get outdoors, stomp that bank and enjoy the sweat equity while learning the basics.
Cheers and go get on em'!

Good stuff Randy. I had a 15.5' aluminum boat for 10 years and fished electric only lakes and had a ton of fun! I also have had some of my best days in the early season with a spinnerbait in shallow water prespawn from shore. Very little money involved from shore.

I fish at a minimal cost. A $160 float tube. A fishing kayak. Plastic worms, creature baits, jigs, and an occasional jerk baits. I consider myself a fringe or niche angler. I fish holes that most anglers will avoid because a little effort is required. Most places I fish it's impossible to get a boat into. Obviously if you use a float tube in Florida if you come back with one leg you're lucky. I never fish popular fishing spots.

Kayaks can be budget friendly, but they way companies are trying to charge for them and especially the way some arose being set up with spot lock, fish finders and other gadgets they are almost as expensive as buying a used bass boat.
IMO real kayak fishing involves paddling, using an anchor if you want to hold your place and figuring out where the fish are manually, not by seeing them on a screen.

I fished out of a couple of used kayaks over the last ten years and had a lot of fun. This past February I bought a 30 year old champion 202 with a great running 225 on it with a lot of recent updates for 10K It's my first bass boat at 51 years old. I love it and I love fishing! I tow my boat with a 2013 Chevy Impala to my local lake. No debts, payments, or worries about being strapped for cash because I love fishing.

I fish out of a kayak that I bought used. I have a few spinning rods. I throw Texas rigged worms and creature baits. Sometimes go to Walmart and get the ozark trail brand lures. Love using beetle spins, taking off the body and replacing with a curly tailed grub. Or a crappie bait soft plastic

Great points. I sold my deceased FIL's Ranger 350 on FB for $4000. It only works if both the buyer and seller are honest with each other. I spent some money on his boat before I sold it to make it as good as it could be. When buying used stuff, always buyer beware.

I'm 78 years old. In January I bought what I call a bass boat . It a 1972 Yarcraft trip hull. It has a nice roller bunk trailer, an old Merc 50 model 500 on it , an X125 humming bird depth finder. I bought it for $1,200.00 . I figured I would spend at least as much as I paid for it to fix it up. I spent about $1,500. So far. It's a nice stable boat to fish out of and scoots us around the lake just fine. Part of the $1,500 went to an electric motor $160.00 and a jack plate power lift (1000.00 + 100 to have someone help install it). I'm fixing up some dings on the main hull , and a few other places. It is structuly sound. Almost all the work I did myself. I'm not only happy with it , IM PROUD of it ! Bye the way I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 four wheel drive. I bought it for $500.00 from a friend. It's rusty , folks laugh at it but it runs great, because I worked on it myself !😁😁😁

My biggest pet peeve is the cost of hooks. A lot of time they are $1 apiece. I suspect the fishing industry is like a lot of things in the good ole USA, and that is there is only a handful of companies that make most tackle and they can pretty much charge what they want.

Cheap does not mean worse fishing, I started with a 6’ eagle claw spinning combo that I spooled with eagle claw line and I pretty much only threw 1/4-1/2 oz rattle traps and caught the heck out of bass in my home lake.

I figure that if you really love the game you'll figure out a way to do it no matter what your financial situation. I fished for 2 years out of an inflatable kayak hauled around in the trunk of my car. In those first 2 years I did 41 tournaments in that inflatable. kayak and got 1 win. I since got a high end kayak and a truck. I'd say for some people a kayak is a great way to go.

I am fishing out of a 89 Ranger no livescope. I've beaten a lot of guys here in Missouri the last two years and it's a satisfying feeling. Boats paid off, truck is paid off but damn it's still a crazy amount of money to fish tournaments or just even go fishing. Especially when the whole country is at Tablerock when you go. Why are all these new anglers here anyway????

An old jon boat with a low hp 2 stroke you can get into for real cheap if you're willing to get your hands dirty. If you're lucky it might even come equipped with poor mans spot lock (an anchor).

Boat Trader magazine or its equivalent. No need to EVER by a new boat. Something like a Tracker TX-17 w/50 hp motor
You also need some basic electronics .. Humminbird Helix 7 or 8 SI is all you need ... down imaging, side imaging and 2D sonar and electronic mapping and you're good to go. Then stop wasting money going out to bars and stuff and buy a FFS unit as soon as possible and spend the time to learn how to use it and you will become a great fisherman eventually 😬

Randy, I don’t need a boat. I don’t know why you don’t understand that at this point. My secret is I spent about $5000 on FFS and just wait by a dock until a boat that doesn’t have one shows up.
