- How to change the spark plugs on a 2019 Mazda CX-9 with the 2.5L Skyactiv engine. Process will be the same on all 2nd gen CX-9's (2016+) and other Mazda's with the 2.5L Skyactiv.
You may want to change the title of this video to mention it also applies to the CX-5 models that have a turbo - Same engine and turbo as the CX-9. I’ve got a 2020 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve with the turbo motor and your video was exactly what I needed. Same requirement to change out spark plugs every 40,000 miles. Thanks!
Did you have to remove any hoses or additional bolts? In total I removed 4x 8 mm, I didn't not remove the 10mm on the front right of vehicle because it doesn't seem to be interfering with access
Thanks for the video. Just did the plugs on my 2018. One addition to make things easier, disconnect the vacuum hose that interferes with the right-most coil plug. That will help it drop straight in without having to fiddle with the angle.
Thanks for the tip!
Seb how do you get the hose off?
@@NDStar100 Gentle twisting, to break the seal and then wiggle it off the fitting.
I have a 2018 and I'm in the middle of replacing my spark plugs, and I can't drop in the far-right coil. It seems that those hoses have some slack on 2019 but not on 2018. I know nothing about cars so I'm always afraid to disconnect things. You disconnected that one hose - the vacuum hose. I'm guessing that is OK and safe to do? No issues with your car afterward? Thanks
@@lepsimica No problems with temporarily disconnecting the vacuum hose. Take a picture of that area so you can refer to it later if you need to. good luck!
Great video! Thank you for sharing and providing such level of detail. I own a 2016 CX9 and like to do my own PM work. Besides oil changes and trans dump and fill, I recently added my own catch can as well. Looking forward to more videos.
How did u add catch can
@@NikeChecksHtx I took
It off. I though I was connected to the PCV system but I wasn’t, so I removed it. Choosing to do intake cleaning every 30k miles.
I recently tried to change spark plugs on my cx9 2017. Couple of things i learned and want to share my experience with you.
1. You might be able to change 1st and 2nd plugs, but 3rd and 4th coil are the hardest part to put back. I tried for several hours and ended up cross threading the coil bolt. I would highly suggest please get it done by Mazda professionals.
2. The mechanic disconnected the hose in order to put the coil.
3. My car was at 98k kms and spark plugs looked pretty good. If I knew it i wouldnt have changed them cuz they look pretty good.
4. I would prefer Mazda OEM spark plugs over NGK.
5. Spark plugs are changed once in a while, i found it convenient to get it done by mazda professionals.
Just few learnings. I have always changed spark plugs of my older cars but Mazda cx9 spark plugs are not easy to change.
Great video, very helpful for us DIYers. I have a '21 CX9 so I'll be needing to replace my plugs eventually. Although, your old plugs didn't look that bad.
Mazda recommends every 40k on spark plugs
Did my own cx-5 and its all thanks to your video. Thank you.
Excellent video, I just ordered the parts and soon be ready to change the spark plugs
Great Video. Also applies to the 2018 Mazda 6 with the same engine (2.5 T).
Should i apply dielectric grease to the ceramic part of the plug?
Excellent work . Thank you
no dielectric on coil packs?
Hi, is it ok if instead of using the 1/4 inch drive 8mm and 10mm sockets plus ratchet that i were to use the 3/8 inch drive versions of those? I am new to this. This is the best tutorial i have seen for this.
Fantastic video. Any chance you can also post a video of changing the rear brake pads & rotors (with EPB). Replacing the engine belts. And replacing the engine coolant please? [All on the CX-9)
I'll be doing the brakes within the next year, and will definitely post a video then! The belts and coolant are coming up very soon, so you should be able to expect those within the next few months most likely.
@@princediy5615 Thanks! There are videos on how to enable maintenance mode for the Electronic Parking Brakes
Preparing to do my first 40k plugs on the 2.5T. FWIW, NGK advises to not use anti seize on the threads, stating that they come from the factory ready to go.
great video learned a lot about replaing the spark plugs, just wondering at the right rear of the engine cover there seems to be a hose disconnected when you turned on the engine, is that something to look out for ?
Tip: I did this but when I started the car it was misfiring horribly. The ignition coil must be inserted back at the right angle otherwise it will not make contact with the plugs thereby misfiring.
Thanks for sharing this !
Thanks great detailed video appreciated 👍
CX9 gt 2018 64000 km what would you recommend for preventative maintenance on the turbo
What did you do to make it easy to remove the spark plugs. You said they were wet.
I was denied noise canceling headphone for when I do online training.. ( ADHD & ASD ) from a multi-billion dollar telecommunication company.. but they will provide me with print outs when. They can remember or someone is available to do so .
Removing that metal plate and working with it seems quite annoying.
I have a 2018 CX-9 with turbo and there is a wiring harness sitting on top of rear bolt holding the plate in place. The harness is attached to the plate with a plastic clip right next to the rear bolt so I can’t move the harness away and can’t get to the rear bolt. I’m concerned I will break the clip if I try to remove it.
Thanks, for the video. I have a 2019 CX-5 Signature with the same engine and assume this video will work for that one also. Please confirm.
So I had the same question. After some research and a few phone calls I did confirm that these are same spark plugs for the CX5 signature trim. The NA engines have different spark plugs as I’m sure you can imagine. Hope this helped.
Thanks, for the spark plug info. Does this video also work for the same engine in the CX-5 Signature?
@@rdm925 Yup, and also for the Mazda6 Grand Touring Reserve or Signature (also with the 2.5T turbo engine)
Thank you for the video, this was super helpful and i was able to replace my plugs today. Just a small mess up, i dropped one of the bolts holding the metal bracket behind the engine and I am not able to find it!!! Do you have any idea what is that bracket called, i wanted order the replacement bolt as i just cannot seem to find it behind the engine!!!
I'm not sure, sorry! Best bet would be to ask the dealer for a parts diagram and find the PN based on that.
The same thing happened to me. Mi found the replacement bolt part number on another video. It is 9XF0-02-127L
Do you need to disconnect battery first before changing battery or straight on swap?
I replace mine. Exactly same plugs. It didn't work. Did you modified gap??? By the way. Coils didn't feel "easy" sitting on new plugs!!!
Hi Baldwin, I'm having the same issue with number 3 and 4, did you manage to fit it in nicely?
Mazda own plugs are the only way to guarantee you won’t have issues. Mazda uses conductivity measurements to help run the car
Hi there great tutorial, quick question: what product do you put on the new spark plug thread before the installation? is the torque 13 FP?
Antiseize, any auto parts store will have multiple types.
Yes, it is 13 foot-lbs.
NGK specifies 18-21ftlb for 14mm plug w/aluminum head. Is 13ftlb correct!? Do you have reference? Tks
Iridium plugs will easily go 100k miles on an engine that is running properly, not sure why they are telling people to change them at 40k.
Is the head alluminio can u strip the threads
I have been trying to push the 4th coil for 3 hours it doesn`t fit in
Perhaps try what was suggested in a comment below and remove the interfering vacuum hose so it can drop straight in.
@@princediy5615 thank you for the response I finally did it without removing the hose thank you again
Hi Salih, I'm having the same issue, how did you fit it in nicely?
@@Kenny.Le2006 hi Kenny i know it is too hard but the trick is you need to drop the coil upright as much as possible from the beginning. if you start to drop it inclined it doesn't fit right. let me know if it works
@@salihsedat Thanks Salih, I followed your instruction in another CX9 sparkplugs video and it worked perfectly. Cheers
If you could move the camera and show us what bolts you are removing exactly.
Forgot to disconnect the battery
Do you have to grease those plugs before putting it in?
A little grease wouldn't hurt, but it's not necessary IMO.
Im at 187k I’m going to do my first set. Cx9 seems to last forever.
These new iridium plugs are good for 100k miles easily, I have seen them pulled at 125k and they still look fine.
I’m having a rough time getting my coils in even wit grease any idea as to why
Does the rubber on the tip seem somewhat swollen?
Why not go with original Mazda spark plugs?
These are the original Mazda plugs. They just say NGK instead of Mazda. Sort of like Denso vs Toyota.
Sir , please help ,after I change my spark plugs at 53000 mileage my gas mileage goes down to average 15 / 16 whereas it used to be 20 around. I bought NGK iridium leaser spark plugs. Any idea what to do?
That's interesting, I wouldn't expect to see that. I'd check the ignition coils on the spark plugs and make sure that there are no issues with those. They often sell rebuild kits for coils where you can replace the boots and springs.
Reset ecu (clearing codes even if none of disconnect battery) first to relearn timing faster. Second you can check plug gap. Clean maf sensor
@@RacerMP1 this is the right answer. clean your MAF sensor, dirty MAFs decrease MPG and negatively affect performance. Should be done yearly.
What brand of torque wrench did you use
Harbor freight! I check it for accuracy often with a digital torque wrench gauge.
Anyone know where pvc valve 2018 2.5 engine is
It’s right behind the intake manifold it’s a tight old spot to.
Hello, this video is too long for a spark plug replacement. Many people would scroll away if they see the half an hour duration.
Please use this feedback for your future videos.
Not true. This was a great step by step video of the process thoroughly explained. This a process that should not be rushed or taken lightly.
I have stopped watching other videos of spark replacement because they were going to fast and not explaining what they were doing. Good for them but terrible as an instructional video.
I changed playback speed to 1.5x.
Lol. I watched from start to finish. Great video!!
