One of the greatest Heavyweights of all time! Larry Holmes had incredible longevity, most people thought his career was completely over when he lost his title to Michael Spinks but Holmes would return and perform very well against the likes of Evander Holyfield, Ray Mercer and Oliver McCall. Truly one of the greats, The Easton Assassin past his prime but still great! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
Only Ali was better, truly beleive he would have what it takes to defeat Foreman, Louis, Tyson and Liston etc at his peak, still a very good Heavy deep into his 40's.
Holmes was a living testament how rock solid boxing fundametals can give you longevity even when the athleticism starts going away. The way he was taunting Ray Mercer on the ropes ("Come on! Come on boy!") inbetween giving him a boxing lession is just legendary.
Him saying "I'm not Tommy Morrison" into the camera despite Mercer having him the corner is one of the most badass things any boxer has done in the middle of a fight.
This man lost his title at 48-0, after a 7 year reign as heavyweight champion, when I was 5 years old. Didn't retire until after I joined the Army at 21 in 2002. That's longevity folks.
Truly talented boxer. A great tactician with a very high ring I.Q. His jab is one of the best in boxing history along with Liston's. Past his prime Holmes was a force to be reckoned with. A top 5 of all time.
Past his prime and was the still the first man to beat Ray Mercer and gave Evander Holyfield a very tough fight,Larry Holmes is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time imo and is very underrated and under appreciated
Totally underrated and underappreciated champion. Had one of the most destructive jabs in boxing history. Absolute heart of a warrior. Thanks for the upload, @haNZAgod.
Holmes is one of my favorite fighters. The man was a true champion and retired healthy, on his own terms with a win. What he did throughout his 40s was incredible. He dominated a prime version of undefeated Merciless Mercer and schooled the likes of Ferguson, Ribalta and Harris. Unfortunately, he was robbed against Spinks in their second fight and against Nielsen. He also gave lessons in boxing to both juiced up Holyfield and McCall while they were peaking. Those two fights were very close and could've gone either way.
One of my two all-time favorite heavyweights...he and Ali were my faves! Larry is as good as any heavyweight to ever step in the ring, he had a PISTON jab that punished, one helluva right cross, and a granite chin and only Tyson taking advantage of a post-prime Larry was the only mark on his chin ever!
Amazing! I’ve been watching a lot of Holmes again recently and read his book. He was amazing even in old age being unlucky to lose decisions to Spinks (2), McCall and Nielson. Should really be 72-3.
Even though he was past his prime, Holmes was still great behind his legendary jab. Man, the past prime Bonecrusher Smith was embarrassing in their rematch as he missed his left hook and fell down. Anyways, long live the Easton Assassin!

By the time Holmes fought Mercer, Holyfield and McCall he was an active fighter again and actually had ample amount of time to prepare whereas in the Tyson fight, Holmes was coming off 2 years of inactivity and barely training. With that being said I think the past prime version of Holmes would always lose to Tyson, just taking away from the win a bit because of when Tyson fought him.

What makes me mad, people so quick to take Tyson credit away because he was “old” and “out of his prime” which yes it wasnt a prime Holmes, but any version of Holmes was still game and this is proof of it, Holyfield couldnt even take em out years after Tyson, he beat a Merciless Ray Mercer, made Butterbean look like a fool
The major difference between those fights and the Tyson fight is that Holmes actually had time to prepare for Holyfield, Mercer and McCall and he was an active fighter again. Tyson got him at the perfect moment
1 of the greatest of all time but imagine how unstoppable he would've been if he had the power of Foreman or Shavers or Liston to go with that skill and jab 😂 would've loved to have seen him fight Foreman at some point in his career, would've still been a sell out even if the were both over the hill.
