By 1982 Larry Holmes was at the absolute peak of his powers having just defeated Gerry Cooney by TKO in his biggest fight to date. He was matched up in this fight that I'm showcasing here against the tough Randall "Tex" Cobb and in typical Easton Assassin fashion he completely nullified his opponents strengths with his incredible jab and distance control. This is a total masterclass on how to beat a pressure fighter with good fundamentals. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
Another great video HanZa. At Larry's peak, I would put my money on him against any great from any era. Height, reach, JAB, skills, ring generalship, chin, recovery powers, heart and IQ, would have been too much for the vast majority of fighters. The only 2 is see we're Ali at his peak and Lennox stylistically, but he would have gotten Lennox out of there.
My favorite story about this fight was that Howard Cosell threatened to quit commentating on boxing matches if this fight wasn't stopped because of the beating Cobb took. It wasn't, and Cosell was a man of his word. When Cobb was told about this, he said he'd take that beating again if it meant Cosell would also stop doing Monday Night Football lol.
Cobb is hilarious. Howard Cosell said somethong to the affect that he was retiring from announcing fights because he found it discussing the beating Cobb took. After hearing it right after the fight Cobb said if Cosell promised to retire from announcing Monday night football he'd go right back in the ring and he'd go another 15 with Holmes.
Texx is a real-life version of that movie thug who could take a punch to the jaw and then smile like he actually liked it. He's also a hilarious comedian outside the ring. Holmes is truly one of the most underrated champions of all time. He doesn't get enough credit. Thanks for the upload, @haNZAgod !
The « Boxing Masterclass » is really becoming one of my favourite series of yours. Great choices in fighters, fights, musics and mood. I would’ve thought a « boxing masterclass » on Larry would be on his fight against Mercer, but this one is also an excellent performance for The Assassin
Larry Holmes was one of the best heavyweights I've ever seen. Fast hands excellent Jab, great footwork, iron chin, stamina, good power. Larry Holmes is what Buster Douglas could of been if he kept training seriously.
Never realized how Larry was able to turn his jab into a left hook a split second before the punch landed. And that footwork: He could smoothly circle into both directions while throwing precise punches with both hands. Amazingly complete fighter. Shame Ali was out of his prime when he fought him. Shame he was out of his prime when he met young Tyson. Those would have been insane fights!
That footwork... That lightning left... And belive me at this fight Holmes had only 90-85% footwork. I guess he was aged a little bit. But i like your viewpoint and yeah Larry was a fully complete boxer. And he was a sportman too, maybe with a little bit more of bloodthirst he could be a sensational finisher. But he was one of the greatest anyway🎉❤.
The best ever in my opinion. Larry Holmes was so durable he survived and got up immidietly after 2 knockdowns from Earnie Shavers the hardest hitter in boxing. So badass he was a top contender years after retirement even beating Ray Mercer and giving a good fight to prime Holyfield!!!! Not only that but The Easton Assassin had the best jab, insane stamina, one of the best defenses and footwork, good amount of power, focus ability of a tiger, top tier ring IQ and he was also master at slugging and swarming except for outboxing
It's always impressive that the only man that could stop him at all was Tyson. Larry was past his best in that fight, but he was still tough and could school dangerous punchers like Ray Mercer after the Tyson fight.
@@drinfernoddsNo, it is a very common mistake. You are mixing the Holmes in the peak of his comeback with Larry Holmes who was retired for 2 years and had only few weeks to train for Mike Tyson. There is no way in hell Mike beats prime Holmes.
Yes . And even Mike said in Joe Rogan's podcast that he glad Larry fight him first when he came back. Because after that fight Larry got himself together and was a legitim threaf and challeng for anyone... "He had some bhaaaaallzzzz"

Holmes was like : Cmon you crazy bastard, let me take you back to your corner... Masterclass for sure. Great class act.
Larry Holmes was very good fighter, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves cause most historians like Bert Randolph Sugar, Jack Newfield, and Larry Merchant view him as a carbon copy of Muhammad Ali. But besides that he’s one of the best to ever get in the ring.
This was a boxing masterclass by Holmes against the heavyweight challenger turned actor Randall "Tex" Cobb where Howard Cossell quit his boxing commentary career after this fight due to Holmes' one-sided and dominant performance on Cobb.
Larry Holmes sometimes get a bad rep as the guy who retired Muhammad Ali (When Ali had some brain damage) and the guy smoked by Mike Tyson. But what people forget is that Larry Holmes took down Ken Norton, Leroy Jones, Tim Witherspoon and Ray Mercer in their PRIME, among others. He was a great champion, he was just given the unfortunate task of being the one to retire Ali (As Rocky Marciano was to Joe Louis). But he was still a great outfighter and great champion, a great athlete. He's a part of boxing history.
IMO, this was the last fight of Larry Holmes' prime (e.g., Jones, Ledoux, Ali, Berbick, Spinks, Snipes, Cooney, Cobb) and again demonstrated that sans 1 punch knockout power, Holmes was a complete fighter. Best jab in boxing history; elite hand speed; excellent foot speed; granite chin; excellent stamina; huge heart and high boxing IQ.
I never saw Holmes throw so many left hooks. That wasn’t a popular punch in his arsenal. But there wasn’t much he wasn’t landing on this night. Wow is all you can really say. Lol.
You mean when Larry reached out with the left and pulled down the oppenent's guard , then smacked them with that lightning fast right.. And when he got them stunned... Started to measure them with the left, smacked the oppenent's skull with multiply uppercuts , broked down their ribs. Right hooks on the side of their heads... Pure master level.
Larry’s career is right next to Foreman’s as the two oddest careers in boxing I’ve ever seen…I think Larry’s is even more strange…he is only 6 years younger than Ali but also fought Tyson when Tyson was in his prime and then retired in the early 00s…idk why but his career just seems like a big giant case of bad timing…he was a hell of a fighter 48-0 but nobody ever talks about it…it’s just all strange to me lol
His right hand was certainly respectable and he hurt / dropped a number of good fighters with it. He wasn't a pure power puncher per say but he didn't need to rely on his power, he had a number of other great assets he wore his opponents down with.
