    We owe some thanks to Mr Smith for pointing the likes of me to this channel. Really appreciate the gratitude from your boost in views and subs etc and the ongoing investment in smartening up the content as a result - it's very watchable! Love the car, love the video. The whole of the internet is willing you guys to get the car to the place you want it to be, and then enjoy the driving as much as the recommissioning! Good work chaps...

    A quick note on the charging battery cables. The positive cable is usually two cables or a split cable. Leads from the positive Terminal lead to the alternator, the starter and usually the under hood fuse box, aka power distribution box. The negative cables lead from the negative post to the car frame and the engine block. There could be more, but that’s enough to get started. If I bought any c4 that has been sitting for years, I would likely change all battery cables as a precaution. I would get at least 6 feet of many sizes of vacuum hose as well, because most of them are likely rotted and contribute to vacuum leaks. If you take care of the voltage issues and vacuum leaks, the engine should run well. It would be good to see you both fix that issue before going into other issues in my opinion.
    Next project? Replace all the brake lines. Buy a roll of nice 3/16 inch size line, in a 25 foot roll. Have or get a good flaring tool and replace the soft short brake hoses too. Brake fluid is intensely hygroscopic, which means it draws moisture in from any source possible. That means the original steel brake hoses will rot from the inside out. The flexible hoses will become very weak as well and sometimes clog.
    I’m glad I found your channel and subscribed! Cheers.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the tips! We do envisage having to change the brake hard lines (and probably soon!)... The battery cables and vac lines seem okay so far. I've vac tested all of the vac lines (off camera) and they hold vacuum... I would imagine when we start driving it faults will appear though!

    Sounds like you've put a ht lead on wrong or perhaps a sticking valve...definately running on 6 or 7. An infra red gun aimed at the exhaust manifold will identify which pots running cold. Good luck guys 👍

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  3 месяца назад +2

      I have an IR gun somewhere! We did triple check the leads and they seemed fine. We're thinking the alternator isn't providing any voltage so the ECU is getting a bit confused with what to fire when. Especially when revs are applied and more frequent firing is required!

  • @SilentRacer911
    @SilentRacer911 3 месяца назад +5

    Asbestos, try not to break them, get them down. They will have to be broken down to smaller pieces somehow, not sure if they are fit together or what. Once they are down, if you have to, cut them and drench with water while you do it. Then bag them up for a dump. Use your heads, if you think you should wear a respirator, wear one.
    The pulley tensioner and alternator should be off the shelf, you might be able to get them at a parts store over there before you order online, online is probably cheaper but with shipping? Ask a dealer over there and get prices.
    I’d say get the brakes done after that, and see how it drives… SLOWLY… unless you want to put tires on first. I’d say take it somewhere you can put it up and inspect underneath so you know what it needs so you’re not fighting it on the ground. Then get an alignment when underneath is up to par. Once it’s done mechanically, then detail as far as you want to go, I wouldn’t do that until you’re done getting dirt everywhere from fixing it.
    Keep up the good work, you’re doing a good job so far!!!

    Quick tip from the motorbike world (where everything is packed in, like you are with that inlet)… if you have a miss and can’t tell which cylinder… temp check the headers.
    Got one colder than the rest, that’s your boy! Pros use their fingers on the manifold, good home mechs spit on each one and watch the fizz, amateurs use a temp gun…

    Love it and keep it up! Once you disconnect the battery for a period of time and the ECU has been reset: turn the ignition on and leave on for 10 seconds before starting. Once started, leave to idle for a full 10 minutes, with no revs for the ECU to relearn all the parameters. See what the idle is like after that...

    Glad you brought up the subject of the gutters as its been bugging me and was going to comment on them! Being asbestos doesn't stop you removing the crap growing out of them! If you feel the need to replace them most council tips (or recycling centres as they call them these days) should take asbestos cement from domestic users (ours does). Those gutters will be asbestos cement which is the lowest risk type as the fibres are largely captive in the cement so shouldn't become airborne unless you smash them up. Take them down as whole as you can and take them to the tip. Any that fracture put in a plastic bag.
    Brakes next please

    Keep up the good work! For sure I would expect the alternator to affect the way the engine runs. ECUs are very fussy about voltage and if it's dropping off, all sorts of weird things can happen.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  3 месяца назад +1

      We're hopeful at that with the car only showing 11.5V when running. Its not enough! Also suspect that when the car revs it stutters, perhaps when the ECU is demanding more power to fire the coils and injectors more frequently, and it just isn't there...!

      Its really the order of "whatever parts we have to hand" at that moment. There kind of is a rough plan but its hard to know what it needs until you've seen what it needs really and parts take a few days to arrive from America. :) We have brake rebuild kits ready to go though and soft lines! But you know, might need to make all new hard lines too. Might need a master cylinder... etc etc. Hard to know till we know... :)!

    Good work guys. I like the logical approach. Having borught back 2 Corvettes it is the way to go.
    I would go with rebuilding the original alternator, Corvette that era and newer can be picky with alternators. If you order a new one, don't trash the old one. Hopefully you don't need it but Gordon Killebrew was the GM tech support guy and printed troubleshooting books.
    Early LT5 injectors diid not like ethanol and were known to fail. Also the fat injectors maybe disk injectors which after sitting with fuel in them can develop a leak or more loss of control between being fired.

      At the moment we are keeping all the old parts that we take off (besides obvious consumables). 100% newer parts are often not the same quality! RE: the ethonol in fuel, since this car hasn't been on the road since 2005/6 the UK didn't really have much in the way of ethonol petrol back then.

    Think you've earned a few more pints there, fellas ! C4's do seem to like a battery in tiptop order, but what happened on mine, I disconnected the battery when the car was idle for more than a couple of days so the ECU had to re-learn each time out. It would run fine until getting near operating temp , the run a bit like yours, with a flat-ish spot and backfires and spit backs, until 190 degrees and the first fan coming on. Thereafter ,it was sweetness and light - this may be what is going on with yours, maybe. I really needed to be driven , especially in cold weather , but would eventually get to 190 . Just idling it on the drive in winter, it wouldn't get to 190 , and would pop and bang and spit at idle .Yours sounds like it has a couple of dead holes , so getting it good and warm may help. The alternator may have a date code stamp on it , as mine did, so if originality is important, try getting it rebuilt. It is likely the diode pack gone south, should be easy enought to source the bits over here. Incidentally, the owner's handbook for my C6 states that if the car is not driven for 25 days, the battery should be disconnected . It has to re-learns, like the C4 , but you don't get the rough running, you just notice things are somehow a lot sweeter and lively after stopping and restarting when good and warm. Oh, one more thing......I'd love to know what you were supping in the alehouse, glad it wasn't pissy lager !!!
