This car amazing me every episode. And you guys "genre" is spot on. Professional but in a very hands on, honest way of doing repairs....like it's relatable to your viewers who sometimes get overwhelmed when we see other shows where , it's seems you have to literally have a laboratory environment and tools to get things done. I've nothing to offer in the way of comments other than encouragement. I'm really enjoying this series and your infinite capacity to learn about how to diagnose problems and just get on with the task to sort them out and to top it off, on a typical British driveway. Having a friend/colleague with the same mindset and approach goes along way to successfully achieving your goals. I'm not really too fussed by the car (rare or not - I prefer the C3 anyway) but just enjoying each episode as they happen. I came here straight after seeing the Late Brake Show barn find - glad I did, thank you. Dom.
Thanks John! It's nice to know it's charging properly now for sure - Slow and steady wins the race eh!! When we fix one problem, another one seems to appear! That's how it's going to be, at least for a while!
"it's just not practical at the moment"... another classic insight for under-funded driveway mechanics. you've made great strides on the engine - fresh hi-test is the nectar of long-neglected chariots. you guys need a mindless break... super clean the interior & trunk, then clean & polish the exterior. snappy looks will make the next phase of mech efforts easier on the soul. after the brake work, seriously consider driving (or taking) it to the nearest lift to make the much-needed comprehensive review of undercarriage. or maybe... given the hard work, success & attention you guys are getting, some supplier of portable car-lifts over there should lend you one that will get that thing a meter into the air. cheers!
PBR Brakes- originally Paton's Brake Replacements is an Australian brake supplier and automotive tech, supplying OEM products to Asia and the Americas. Originally family owned it is now a public company. Great work guys.
Well done guys love it proper coming along now the amount you have done up to now and holding down full time jobs is madness well done to you guys for cracking on with it.good to see the second pair of gloves held out 😭🤣🤣🤣
Well done guys, reminds me of the 80's doing it myself as a skint apprentice engineer on my parents drive. Learning as I went. Really interesting posts. Best of luck getting this beast going well.
When I did the brakes on my C4, I ordered rebuilt ones from RockAuto , ordered Sunday evening, had 'em by Wednesday lunchtime. IIRC, they were the best , not only on price, but core charge too. That's a thing with 'em , not worth the shipping cost to send cores back for credit. I replaced the flexies with braided stainless ones at the time, the brake feel was transformed , solid, progressive and bloody powerful. Hawk pads were installed, great feel and very clean, less dust than any other pad I've used. Regarding your recent short on tne 'new' C5.....I don't mind if you feature that, as much as I'm digging the 'Zeearrwun'- just gimme 'Vette content and I'm happy as pig in that stuff they're happy in ! Keep it up , it's rivetting interest, and well done you two.
Hello from Georgia in the south eastern US. I've been watching since part 1. You said if anyone has any suggestions; well if you haven't already had the brake rotors "turned" on a lathe, why not paint them with a couple coats of black spray paint and afterwards have them turned? It's only for aesthetics and will look nice once re-installed on the mighty ZR1. I did on my 2004 C5 Corvette because the rusty brake rotors looked bad compared to rest of the car and the shiny thin spoke chrome wheels. "High temperature" black spray paint was used. Also the brake calipers were unbolted to remove the rotors, then painted with the same high temperature paint, lastly sanded the embossed "Corvette" logo silver again and installed new rubber brake hoses. The calipers were painted red by a previous owner and most of the paint had come off, so now they're all black. When the engine ran again a few episodes ago, I started clapping! Truly happy for you and hoping that you will flush the rear differential oil and transmission oil too. Just be sure to open the fill plug FIRST on the transmission and differential, then open the drain plugs. I only say that because of the apparent corrosion here and there. You should be driving the ZR1 soon and regularly; I am enjoying the journey.
Oh yes always open the fill plug first !!! The diff and gearbox fluids will be done most likely when we get the car to a garage and on a ramp to make life a bit easier and safer. :)! Thankyou for the support from day 1 :)!!! We were clapping too! such a huge move forward when the car starts to come back to life.
The PBR caliper was used by multiple brands. So you may find something local. The 96 Corvette and Mustang Cobra 94-97? version of the caliper is a bit stiffer than the 91. The 96 version bolts on and I believe the Baer and Mustang Cobra versions are direct bolt ons. Baer used the caliper in kits for many classic cars. The black 96 Corvette caliper would be a lucky find. C5/C6 PBR calipers can be adapted but you would need the 5 spoke ZR1 wheels for the spokes to clear the caliper. We've had good luck with Vettepros in Charlotte, North Carolina getting us parts. You can tell the C4 vs C5 PBR 2 piston caliper by looking at the front of the caliper. C4 has 2 full circles, C5 , base C6, 2005-06 GTO, Holden, and later Mustang is a camel hump.
1. I just swapped my alternator, too. Although it was on an Audi V6. 2. Fake quad tailpipes :-( Only two used 3. that caliper in your hand looked like an owl. nice watching, keep videos coming!
Hi Ray! Yes the fake quad pipes are unexpected to be honest! I'll have to have a look at that caliper and see if I can see a resemblance to an owl!! Glad you're enjoying it!
True true, but on the other side of the coin, its only really killed service items that would need to have been changed anyway. The underbody seems in remarkable condition! Plus someone in the trade once told me "You can change anything about the car except the mileage, and if its been written off"...
The guys on car sos use a firm that completely overhaul brake calipers with regards to cleaning and painting the calipers in a chosen colour as well as piston and seal replacement. Keep at it enjoying the journey
Brilliant job stripping down the brakes and discs, engine sounds sweet, you both work well together, great job guys. Looking forward to more progress in your next video. Tim 😊
The airbox is integral to measured air intake and with it on shes running sweet. Those brake lines are shot, I dont envy you. Always run my luxe bangers on premium shell and my mower too.
Another crackin' video. Nice to hear the engine running much better than previous weeks. Does help with full voltage. I think that before too long and running the engine any more, a few key essentials need to be flushed and changed. Oil, oil filter and of course draining the coolant. Really need to find someone with a wet blaster to clean off all those brake parts properly. Keep up the good work and do you have any plans for working on the car other than your driveway.
Oil has been changed along with the filter :) will be changed again once its been round the engine a few times. We are hopefully going to get some ramp time fingers crossed once the car is mobile!
Congrats guys the car now sounds really good you did and amazing job i mean you changed everything and used new parts i think things Will going to BE better and better, keep up the good work 💪
Looking good, with the carpet use a pressure washer (karcher) to initially wet it thru, then use a drill brush with plenty of detergent, i use the vax carpet solution to scrub the heck out of it, then finally wash it off again with the pressure washer, I always use this method and they always turn out like brand new 👍
If you can purchase a brake seal kit and new pistons then it might be worth your while to remove all the old ones and then just dip the calipers in some citric acid with water. Do that a couple of times using a power washer on them to remove the stubborn dirt. Dry them off with compressed air or leave overnight and then spray them up in silver and then fit the new seals and pistons, will look brand new and will be a lot cheaper to do.
Thanks! It was tempting to go that way but we've purchased remanufactured replacements - If they are no good we will probably just pay someone to do ours. It would be nice to do them ourselves but there is so much other stuff to do on the car it's easier to let them be someone else's problem!
You do what you do……. Within your time frame…… we’ve all done that while having normal jobs….. it’s a pain but it’s sumat to look forward to while doing boring work😎👌🏽
Differential and transmission oil would be a easy one to cross off the list as well as bleeding through the clutch hydraulic system Cooling system also needs fresh coolant.
Very true - Might get those ticked off this week while it's up on jackstands... Coolant we've already purchased but haven't got around to flushing it yet.... Thanks for the tips!
I believe some evap-o-rust will help you guys a lot. It will save you alot of time with sending parts out to be refinished when they can be cleaned up in a couple hours
Hello chaps, before you spend too much on your stock brakes, I *think that there is an upgrade using parts from a Cadillac (I think). Disclaimer, it's a very faint memory, but maybe worth investigating.
I wanted to let you know it was because of your channel that I subscribed to a year of RUclips Premium after sending my first ever "Super Thanks" to you in the last video. I now look forward to every Sunday with your new upload!
Great to see the three pedal C5 arrive, I have a three pedal C6 which I love. But, I also have an accident damaged C5 with a mint LT1 in it plus a lot of other usable parts, car has 54k on the clock. Let me know if you need anything 😊
Just caught up on the videos today. Brilliant progress and you're doing a great job creating the videos. Really nice to see good DIY driveway hobby & passion. Looking forward to your surefire success growing here 👏🏻
I feel for you, working on gravel, as I do my spannering in my gravel back yard. I also have the added benefit of nine dogs who also use it as a toilet, so you're in relative luxury compared to me 😂 Good progress lads 👍
Cheers David - 9 dogs !!! Wow! I've got 4 and that's two too many! Luckily they don't pee on the drive!! Ha ha ha! I've deployed an old rug to save the knees, seems like an improvement! Thanks for watching :)
Yeah more like what is really achievable and although we acknowledge this is a special car, its also not a Ferrari California or a Muria or a 73 RS 911 and a £50-100k restoration is probably beyond what anyone would realistically be willing to do with it.
I was actually hoping to get another view of the pub you hang out at and maybe a little tour of that place too. Show us viewers a little more about the place you kick back after a long day of work and then the 2nd job, (ZR-1 rebuild)
Just went and bought some interior panels for my 1975 C3 (off a wreck) last weekend and then installed them this weekend. Not perfect but slowly getting better!
I would suggest getting a battery powered impact gun, I have the Milwaukee m18 mid torque and it breaks lug nuts with ease. Would help out on hard bolts and lugs. Really enjoy y’all’s videos getting a legend back on the streets after years of sitting. Been following since I saw the article with y’all buying the vette. Keep it up fellas!
Thanks Jonathan!! I've got a DeWalt impact gun but due to how old and rusty a lot of the bolts are we are doing it the old fashioned way for now so we don't shear any or at least try to avoid shearing!! Really glad you're appreciating the uploads!
They do need doing but to be honest we really want to get the car mobile first under its own power... so we can get it to garages with ramps, make it easy to get onto trailers etc and ensure its running so we can get it safely stored before winter. So that's priority one really!
Hey lads, worked on these before and you should replace the O2 sensors (oxygen sensors, there are 2). Buy with factory oem to save you the headaches of cheaper versions from China. Bad or sooted o2 sensors will run havoc on your fuel burn, idle, etc. easy replacement part for lots to be gained.
Really appreciate the advice, we've actually had a few people mention the o2 sensors so we've purchased a pair from RA which will be fitted most likely in episode 9, just for peace of mind that they are new. As you say the old ones are highly likely to be tired!
When you said that you would get under the car with a torch, I thought it might early to start putting flames to any of the parts under the car; until I realized that a torch is a flashlight.
He he he! I was under the engine looking at my brake discs with my torch... Or should I say - I was under the motor looking at my rotors with my flashlight.... !
I have been watching this series of ZR1 videos and I am happy to see you two guys rescue this car from the horrors of neglect. out in the elements. I wonder why did he just abandon this special Vette the way he did? I own an 82 Vette that had serious performance mods to it. I tossed out the stock drivetrain and installed a gen 1 style Dart SHP 427 masking 550hp and swapped the 700r4 to a 4L8E.
@cajunroadwarrior your C3 sounds awesome!! I don't think the previous owner abandoned it as such - I think he just stopped using it and time sort of slipped by as can sometimes happen. The nice thing is I don't think it was laid up due to some sort of fault or issue luckily!
Another great episode guys! Looking forward to the new brake line install. Question - instead of going back to OEM calipers and rotors, what about an upgrade to Wilwood or Baer? Aesthetics would be infinitely better, and they may actually cost less. As many others have said - GREAT channel. 👍
Thanks - Glad you appreciate it! We did look at Wilwood but they are super expensive and there's a lot of stuff we need to buy (repainting, $2000 tyres etc) so for now we've gone reman, we will see how we get on!
Great job guys! Are you two mechanics or just like super handy that you just innately know how to do these things? Come fix up our Smokey and the Bandit 1977 Pontiac Trans Am T-Top 43,000 mile Black and Gold Y-82 Special Edition in Orlando Florida if you get bored !!! Or my 72 k mile 1971 Chrysler Town & Country Station Wagon. As seen in the 1976 Original “The Hills Have Eyes” 👀 Horror movie 🎥 I’d like to get the running again 🤷🏼♂️ lol 🤣 Enjoy your Sunday lads! 👍🏼🙏🏻🧑🔧
I’m enjoying watching for sure . Always loved the first of the ZR1’s . I’m always overwhelmed how cars in the uk get so badly corroded underneath . Watching with enthusiasm from NZ . Keep going guys !
This car has survived quite well structually we think. I suppose the car was used very little in the winter and saw very little actual road salt, which is the real killer! We will lanogaurd the chassis when the car is in the air!
Crack on boys don’t worry what people say good on you both two mates trying good enough for me boys 😊
Thanks @geffgee - Really appreciate the words of encouragement!!
For all you American viewers. Two British gallons is about $500
haaa! i bet! still crazy here too
😅😅
🤣🤣
Haaa!

I didn't even know how much I needed a laid-back DIY British car channel. But you don't get this anywhere else, and I love it.
Thanks buddy! Glad you like it!
This is British spannering at it's best!
Glad you think so! :)
Mole grips on a spanner, I'm definitely steeling that trick! I'm already using the hammer and socket/extension technique ;) Love this 'real world' restoration, basic tools on a drive when its not p1ssing down.
Thanks Andy! Not a bad trick that eh! With limited resources the creativity flows 😫😅😅
I mean this is not an ordinary car but you make it seem within our reach.
Well done
Thanks so much Sunil for your support - We would love to have a large dry space and a ramp etc but we don’t so we are doing our best with what we have (which is basic tools and a lot of determination!)
Once it is driving and road legal we can start to improve the cosmetics!
Very impressed that you are working without a garage👏👏👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
It's not much fun - But in some ways a nice challenge!
"Cross-threaded is still threaded" - Chris 😁
Nice work by the new camera operator too!
Ha! It's true I suppose!
Amazing progress for 2 guys on a gravel drive, your boundless enthusiasm is great viewing
Thankyou for the support :D!
You have beautiful living surroundings, good luck with your beautiful car🙏🙏🍺🍺🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks for the kind words! :) :)
Now that was wonderful, she's coming back to life :) yeah I dont live too far from Nottingham the weather has been awful.
Nice result eh :) When the new brakes arrive we can actually drive the thing hopefully!
@@Auto_Funk Yes, then the fun can start.
Great videos. Just a couple of guys working out of their driveway on an amazing car. That is the reality for many of us who wrench on our cars. No lifts & no fancy tools. Looking forward to seeing more ZR-1 progress.
Flippin’ eck, that engine does sound a LOT better!!! ❤
Great progress, gents! Time for a pint. That backing track during the video was awesome. I was tapping away. Great tune!
Thanks - It's always "time" for a pint, coincidentally that track is called Time... It's an old song my band recorded a few years back and might be on my youtube channel if you search for it... :)
My wife keeps telling me I missed my calling. I LOVE wrenching on my truck and motorcycles. And I am absolutely a fan of you, Llew and Chris who are in the process of making this LT1 a runner and a stunner. I know this is a labour of love and I look forward every week to see the progress you boys are making. Godspeed and greetings from Vancouver Island!!😊
Thankyou for the support Ken. Watching other youtubers work on American cars especially is what gave me the bug! VGG, Junkyard Digs etc!
Well done! Great to see the progress.
The motor sounds sooo much better
Totally agree!
I've nothing to offer in the way of comments other than encouragement. Thankyou for the support Dom! Still got the Corsair? They're good looking cars!
@@Auto_Funk thanks for your time to reply. You're welcome to come and see the Corsair... it has provenance! I have VW 1302s as well.
Great progress with the Vette, engine sounds nice now.
Well good music man I now will watch just found the channel
Thanks Randy! Enjoy! ☺️
Great video guys, runs lovely now it’s getting full electrical power ,it’s getting there good luck 👍👍
Thanks John! It's nice to know it's charging properly now for sure - Slow and steady wins the race eh!! When we fix one problem, another one seems to appear! That's how it's going to be, at least for a while!
One thing for sure you guys are going to be C4 ZR1 experts when you are done!
Carry on boys!
👌👌
😂😂😂😂
Hope so G!! 💪💪💪💪
I have been enjoying your videos and they get better and better each time you drop a new one. I look forward to following along with your build.
Thanks @MrCarrera28 that's very encouraging to know! Really appreciate your support :)
Congrats, runs far better, keep at it.

Pretty much nailed the plan on the head there :) !!
The engine sounded so much better than before, even listening on my crappy computer. That must be a good feeling.
Yes we know now that fundamentally the engine itself is correct and fine :) and any issues are electrical!

Thankyou for the support will check them out :) !
When you get to the point of merch, you absolutely need to do gloves. Pre ripped ones would be hilarious and well.
We could sell our ripped gloves... though I am not sure anyone would want to buy them !!
lol. You can totally hear that GM alternator whine now. Its Fixed!!! Great job guys.
Nice little repair we think :) A charging fault is also going to cause headaches so it was something which needed to be sorted immediately !
Well done guys really enjoying the series.
Thanks Paul, we appreciate the support!
If one calliper is knackered the rest aren’t far off.
Engine sounds sweet 👍
True Lou - That's why we are replacing ALL of them! :) (And the rotors!) Thanks for the comment and stay tuned!
Another great video and some nice progress 👍
Thank you Skylark! Getting there slowly!
Spotted the Michael McDonald reference. Steely determination, but Doobie careful. Another great episode. Genuinely fascinating, yet totally relatable.
Ha! We do(obie) love a bit of sophisticated jazz infused rock... !
After watching this I had to play Time Out Of Mind 4 times. What an album.

Making steady progress, engine sounds good.
Good work , keep going .
Differential and transmission oil would be a easy one to cross off the list as well as bleeding through the clutch hydraulic system
Cooling system also needs fresh coolant.
Very true - Might get those ticked off this week while it's up on jackstands... Coolant we've already purchased but haven't got around to flushing it yet.... Thanks for the tips!
Purrs like a kitten 👌😄
Sounds good, progress is made, good episode 👊👍
Great job guys! I can see doing something like this when I retire. C4 Corvettes are one of my favorites
They're such iconic looking cars. Everyone knows what a Corvette looks like and for our generation the C4 is the one we remember!
It deserves a set of wilwoods
Love the content keep it up
I wanted to let you know it was because of your channel that I subscribed to a year of RUclips Premium after sending my first ever "Super Thanks" to you in the last video. I now look forward to every Sunday with your new upload!
That is really nice to hear :o Thankyou so much for the support! It means a lot Greg!
Great to see the three pedal C5 arrive, I have a three pedal C6 which I love. But, I also have an accident damaged C5 with a mint LT1 in it plus a lot of other usable parts, car has 54k on the clock. Let me know if you need anything 😊
Ooh nice! Are you in the UK? The 3 pedal C5 should be quite a fun summer toy with a little bit of love!
Just caught up on the videos today. Brilliant progress and you're doing a great job creating the videos. Really nice to see good DIY driveway hobby & passion. Looking forward to your surefire success growing here 👏🏻
Thankyou for the support :)!!
I feel for you, working on gravel, as I do my spannering in my gravel back yard.
I also have the added benefit of nine dogs who also use it as a toilet, so you're in relative luxury compared to me 😂
Good progress lads 👍
Cheers David - 9 dogs !!! Wow! I've got 4 and that's two too many! Luckily they don't pee on the drive!! Ha ha ha! I've deployed an old rug to save the knees, seems like an improvement! Thanks for watching :)
Ace! My Monday morning fix !
Great series of videos, enjoying the journey.
Thankyou :) !
Nice to see a realistic fix up, not some pristine workshop with tens of thousands of pounds of tools.
Yeah more like what is really achievable and although we acknowledge this is a special car, its also not a Ferrari California or a Muria or a 73 RS 911 and a £50-100k restoration is probably beyond what anyone would realistically be willing to do with it.
Great stuff. The mix of metric & imperial must be a bit of a pain. Love "the workshop bench".
Yeah on the C5 it went completely metric (aside from the battery posts bolts) But the C4 is a bit of a cross over in terms of bolts.
Very cool that you acknowledged my comment about 🧤 🧤 in the last video. Or a similar comment. Either way love the videos. 🎉
The thing about gloves is, they're very handy!
Looking good guys!!! Making good progress 👍
Thanks James!!
I was actually hoping to get another view of the pub you hang out at and maybe a little tour of that place too. Show us viewers a little more about the place you kick back after a long day of work and then the 2nd job, (ZR-1 rebuild)
Hey up, me too I did mention a rant down the pub after car works last video
Last week the pub had a quiz on and a football match on, so we couldn't really do much filming in there without feeling a bit silly! Haha!
keep it up
Boom! Pop pop pop!
Just went and bought some interior panels for my 1975 C3 (off a wreck) last weekend and then installed them this weekend. Not perfect but slowly getting better!
So long as your moving forward with it your moving forward! Cars are complex things and difficult work so slowly is usually the best way for us!
Enjoying watching your progress. How about tackling the suspension (bushes etc) while the brakes are off?
Where can we send you free stuff? You need more gloves, at least 😂👍
Well done boys 👌
Ha!!! Drop me an email - llew.guild@gmail.com if you want to send free stuff! :) Gloves would certainly help!
@@Auto_Funk I can't wait for the next video. You guys are making great content.
Very good job all round, but you definitely need set a new discs back and front new pads and awful calipers to be sent off for re-Ferb and paint job❤
Thanks for the comment! You’ll probably like part 8 !! ☺️☺️
As seen in the 1976 Original “The Hills Have Eyes” 👀 Horror movie 🎥
I’d like to get the running again 🤷🏼♂️ lol 🤣
Enjoy your Sunday lads!
