  • My Samsung's Flex Book 13 keyboard backlight is randomly turning off - and sometimes back on. Anyone any idea why? This the the second Flex Book I got - same problem with both. Samsung's tech support said it would not be a driver issue as the backlight is controlled by the board directly, therefore i returned my first but very same problem with the second as well. I am a bit confused...

PROBLEM SOLVED!! So I went searching. It turns out that the light sensor which triggers the automatic backlighting is located right next to the blue power light on the top left side of the computer base. I covered it with my finger and immediately, the back lighting lit up. So, I colored over the sensor with a black fine-tipped permanent marker and it worked like a charm!! Hope this helps you out as well!!

Thank you Stephen, covering up the light sensor seems to work - no idea why this possible need to be done even in a pitch dark room? Seems like this sensor has potential for future costs savings for Samsung by simply removing it ;)

Thank you very much! This is the only solution it seems! No idea how you found it out, but you should post this all over Samsung's forums and help the people who also are asking the same thing

I just figured this out too. I also then just updated my driver through the Samsung app, and the backlight holds now!

Same problem as all above. I read the comment re: covering the sensor, etc. Well I decided to clean the sensor area - with screen cleaner - and the problem seems to be corrected. how about that?

I had three of these laptops and only covering the sensor removed the problem for good... not sure how cleaning would have helped me as the problem even occurred in pitch black rooms as shown in the video. Samsung seems to have a real problem with this sensor! Happy cleaning the sensor worked for you!

I wonder if we can't find the light sensor and just tape over it so that the computer thinks it is dark all the time..?

I have found that if i cover the light sencor while i turn the backlights on the keyboard it stays on. even after i uncover my finger in bright rooms just have to hold it for a bit and it seems to lock on. This is my first day with the laptop and i found it quite annoying to get the backlighting to stay on, and from the look of the comments im not the only one. Also i dont like the idea of covering it with tape or drawing on a brand new keyboard. is there anyway to turn off the atomatic adjusting for the keyboard? Thanks!!

Does anyone know how to get into the keyboard settings? Maybe there is a way to disable the sensor.

unfortunately, there seems to be no way of disabling the sensor as far as I know :s Would be a nice option though!

Can the auto backlit be turned off? So this way it stays on even daytime.

It seems that only covering the sensor works. There is no option anywhere to deactivate this.

@@frankg4833 I found how to disable the sensor from Devise Manager, however when it is disabled, the lights don't come on at all. Disabling has the opposite effect. Is just seems that the sensitivity is sort of set for too dark.

I am having the same problem with mine..
Would love to know how to fix it...

Guess same as mine? All drivers up to date? Samsung Tech support suspected a hardware issue initially. As this is already the second Flex I received, I am a bit worried to give it a third try... I was given this reply from Samsung's escalation team "... this may again be related to the light sensor which will turn the keyboard backlight off if it detects what it considers to be sufficient light in the room. I recognise that on your video there has been a comment from another user reporting the same concern, however from a quick check on our online community this does not appear to be something that any other users are reporting with regard to this product. " Really do like the laptop otherwise but working in dark rooms without keyboard backlight is impossible. Would be good if more people report it... my keyboard backlight just turned off again...

@@frankg4833 I'm having the same issue. seems like it shuts off only when i actually need it to work. of course at the moment its working perfect ... let me know if you find any answers.

@@frankg4833 Yeah. All drivers are up to date. I live in Korea so I'm going to take mine directly to the main service center here on Monday and see what they say. I will let you know what happens and if there is a fix. For mine, it stays on fine when the room is completely dark but the minute any light hits it, the backlight turns off automatically same as yours. I hope this is not a deliberate thing they did to save battery life because I bought the silver one and the keys are very hard to see with the back lighting turned off even in broad daylight because of reflection. Again, I will let you know what happens on Monday

@@StephenPoirier Looking forward to hear what the guys at the source say. It is a really weird and annoying problem and I would be surprised if there would not be many more with the same issue... just to clarify, mine turns off day or night, bright room or dark alike.

    • @StephenPoirier
      @StephenPoirier 4 года назад

So I went to Samsung service here in Korea today. Turns out, it's designed to be this way. Backlight only stays on when the room is in complete darkness. Wish I had bought the blue one now....I bought silver and the reflection from light around me makes it impossible to see the keyboard with the backlights off... not impressed. Hopefully this will change with a software update.... :(

Same and I just bought a blue one a few days ago I figured it was a setting issue or because I was cheap and bought an Open Box for half the price not sure if im returning it now???

    • @frankg4833

Personally, I like the laptop otherwise. Simply covering the sensor (next to the blue light) works just fine for me and the problem is gone. Use it for a few months like this now with no problems.
