  • My care routine has changed quite a bit over the years as I've moved to a couple different houses, a different state, and implemented a much better indoor growing system. The principles for caring for succulents remains the same, but I'm always looking for ways to simplify my care routine to keep my succulents happy and minimize the amount of attention they need from me.
    I'd love to know what systems you've developed for keeping your succulents looking their best. Feel free to post in the comments!

    I recently just switched to sungro Black gold cactus/succulent soil and of course I add perlite and decomposed granite and I have noticed that my water just runs straight through the pot and I never thought to plug the bottom hole!!! LOL what a genius idea! And on some of my plants I do the same thing that you do, I put them in a tray and water both from top and bottom. It just gives me a more confident feeling that they are being completely saturated rather than just bottom watering or just top watering. I know you are probably feeling just like I am can't wait for spring and to bring some of our babies outside! It's coming, slowly but surely it's coming even though we just got 18 in of snow 😊

    I use a similar method of watering. Since we have really hard water I use a water filter to remove as much hard water residue as possible. It doesn't take out all the calcium and lime but it helps some. We saved old soda and water bottles that are small enough to fit under the nozzle on the refrigerator and use a funnel for the larger filter pitcher. My husband helps with keeping my water bottles full. I use an old plastic bowl for round planters and a recycled Swiffer box for square planters. I have to sit at a table to water due to back problems and keep a large piece of flannel backed plastic on the table to protect it. (The grit from the gritty mix was scratching the table and I wiped it so many times it was taking the shine off the wood. The plastic really helps it stay better looking.) I water as you showed but to let the pots drain I set them in a collection of pot drip pans, cool whip bowls, and the plastic bowls frozen entres come in. ( For me they are too heavy to hold until they are done dripping and many of my pots are six and eight inches across.) After they are done dripping I put them back on the shelves. Then I can pour the water back into the bowl to be reused. I have found that pots with a rock topping work much better than the ones with only gritty mix. The bark floats and makes quite a mess but rock topping holds it all in place. It is so much fun to groom the plants while they are soaking. I can take time to check them for any signs of problems and decide which need trimming or need to go out in the garage on the shelves I have there until I have time to repot them.
    Thanks for all the good into you share with us.

    I use a slightly more organic mix of soil because of my outside high temps and wind. I recently discovered that leaving a taller 6-7 inch terracotta pot in a couple inches of water it actually pulls water up into the top layer of soil. It takes a couple more hours but this hasn't seemed to bother any of the succulents. They sit for 10 or os days between waterings. Thanks for all you suggestions! I've learned so much from you and have many living succulents!!

    One thing worth noting for anyone watching, if you happen to have a pest, watering like this is a great way to spread it to all your plants. I didn't know about root mealies so inadvertently spread them by watering plants together. Now I put them on a cookie drying rack and water each plant with fresh water and then spray the rack with Alcohol.

  • @solarwinds-

    Hi Cassidy, good to see you again. At 6:48 I see you have reused your water. I've seen this done before on several other channels. What I wonder is doesn't this spread potential unseen pests that you didn't know were there; mealy bug eggs, thrips eggs and the dreaded root mealy bug and their dastardly pupas? Wouldn't this cause a major infestation?

    • @Succulentsandsunshine
      @Succulentsandsunshine  2 года назад

      It could cause issues if there are pests on your succulents. We've checked these before/during watering to ensure that there aren't any pests, but if it's a concern you can definitely use fresh water on each plant.

    Thank you for making this video. I just began caring for succulents. A couple of the plants I bought came in pots that do not have a drainage hole. I have been watering once a month with about an ounce of water and just letting it stay in the pot. I have not had the plants long enough to tell if this is a good method of watering them. What do you suggest?

    I currently have most of my succulents outdoors in Bonsai Jack gritty mix. I am definitely very new to growing succulents. I have 50% shade cloth (thanks for the video suggestion) over them to protect them from the brutal Georgia heat. How do I handle my watering schedule when it rains? Should I be concerned?

    • @Succulentsandsunshine
      @Succulentsandsunshine  3 года назад

      Since your succulents are planted in a gritty mix, you shouldn't need to worry too much about the rain, especially if they are in pots with drainage holes. If you find the soil isn't drying out quickly enough, you may need to move the planters.

    I have two questions. First, where did you get the trays on the new wooden succulent shelf and I’ve been studying grow lights and I’m so confused. Can you make a recommendation? I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars, especially since I will have a large set of shelves similar to the stand your husband did not build (the metal one) and I assume I will need one for each shelf. I have read what Mountain Crest Gardens has on their site and also the site that has epic . . . Something in the title (I can’t remember the exact name). Would love a recommendation and ideally something with a timer. Thanks!!!

    Can water therapy enable roots to grow from an echeveria who is dehydrated and NO roots on them?
    Furthermore with stem is calloused already.

    • @Succulentsandsunshine
      @Succulentsandsunshine  10 месяцев назад

      It's possible, but it depends on how dehydrated the plant is. I've also found that roots grown using water propagation aren't as durable as when the cutting is rooted in soil.

      Written using google translate:
      A beltéri hőmérséklet nem fontos mindaddig, amíg a pozsgás nem hűl le túlságosan a klímaberendezéstől. Jelenleg pozsgásnövényeink 26 C-on vannak.
      Az öntözést illetően az áztatás és szárítás módszerét javasoljuk. Teljesen áztassa be a talajt, majd öntözze újra, ha a talaj teljesen megszáradt. Jó vízelvezető talaj használatát is javasoljuk. A saját készítésű receptet oldalunkon itt találja.
