I was a bass in the chorus for the Chicago premiere production. Pendercki's vision for this opera was huge and the production had to be simplified. Nevertheless, it was a premiere of magnificent and overwhelming intensity. I still have the t-shirt and wonderful memories. I've loved and followed his work ever since.
Genius, genius...pure genius!! One of the most brilliant composers since Bela Bartok. He took the best of idiosyncrasies from Bartok, Shostakovich, Mussorgsky and others, and incorporated something synergistic, a heady brew indeed!!!
I'm sorry, I cannot hear idiosyncrasies of Bartok (Hungarian), Shostakovich (Russian) or Mussorgsky (Russian) in this Polish composers' music. It is Penderecki and nothing more. A true genius as you say.
I was a member of the children's chorus for this production in 1978. I was only 10-11 years old at the time, so I wasn't quite aware of what a huge figure Penderecki was.
I was there too. I believe it was performed only once, at the Lyric Opera, and may not have been performed again since. Other than the Adagietto, I don't believe it was ever recorded in its entirely. Very controversial production. Penderecki wanted an oratorio approach, and the director (can't remember his name) was fired because he didn't agree. It was also a year or two late, if I recall aright. It was a very static event, dramatically. Two tall cages flanked the stage, containing the chorus. And it was long. Four hours, I think. So this is just 1/4 of it. Very dark stage, dark music. Still, for me, scintillating.
I was there at the Lyric as well. I was only 19 at the time and my classical music pallet was not very wide, so I was not yet able to appreciate this music for the masterpiece that it was. Sad news that Penderecki died today. They must have recorded it from the WFMT broadcast. WFMT had exclusive rights to broadcasting all the opening nights at the Lyric. Or maybe they got the recording directly from WFMT or the Lyric for a fee to be able to put it up here.
I do like that. It's more colourful and dramatic to my ears than e.g. Verdi. I like that it's not so "predictable" what's going to happen. Most of what was written before Liszt sounds so common to me recently. It's always good, but: With Mahler, the music starts to become really interesting, I think. And then there's a whole universe up to this day. Sometimes I think I materialized into this world in order to be granted the pleasure of listening to music... It's the greatest "thing" to me.
You say it's scary? Hahaha! :-) But who can thinks of our lives here, outside of Paradise, as of really magnificent? We all must be patient here till the Final Judgment, and the symphony clearly states that... So, to me it's a real masterpiece!
It's a two part opera, each part lasting about one and a half hour. It comes from a non-official or ''bootleg'' cd I think. I have just found and downloaded it. It's a FLAC lossless download but I had to convert it to MP3 320kbs to burn it into JUKEBOX AUDIO CD. The lossless WAV format was too long to fit each part into a standard format cd disk. Still, it sounds pretty good. I am glad I found it.
Greetings- Joy Davidson is my mother. She passed away this Sunday, February 5, 2023. I was wondering if we could chat about a possible playlist of any other videos you may have of her? Thanks for your help.
where can i obtain this music?? if someone knows where i can buy a cd of this or a websight where i can download this that would be greatly appreciated. Id just rather not download it from youtube.. also dont want FLAC
I'm sorry, I agree with you entirely, but it's just hilarious for someone with the user name Transformers2themax to be doling out accusations of people being philistines hahahaha.
I guess if you produce Avant Garde music for a while you then get a dispensation to produce post-romantic work and still be taken seriously. Or did he get a lot of flack for this change in style? Is this really the beginning of the opera? It seems to start after the fall....that's kind of odd. Is it a flash forward? It does seem to have the static quality of an oratorio, if you leave out the dramatic parts like the temptation of Eve. I'm guessing 12:40 we've journeyed to hell? He's no doubt one our most original musical thinkers, a giant, an innovator. There are sounds and expressions of indescribable beauty and power, at the same time I find his music utterly overwrought. Did he ever crack a musical smile? Unrelentingly heavy-handed.
Let's begin with the woman the first sinner of mankind the weakest creation that's fooled over materialistic things, the reason of joining man and ending humanity..the imperfected creation.

I heard this LIVE on the radio on that very day in 1978 and I was completely bowled over. Unforgettable.
I can't believe this is available. I was there for this performance--it was absolutely stunning. Almost 40 years later, I still remember that night.
He died today (29.03/2020) :/
Instablaster...

Maestro Penderecki R.I.P ❤

Hey, I was too! It's so strange coming back to this recording after some forty-five years.
Thank you so much for making this recording available!
Opera molto interessante che non conoscevo (Alan Opie no controtenore, ma baritono).
Man... This is some of the most sinister sounding music I've ever heard. Who needs death metal?
+NorrinRadd22 no one, actually.
+Shoe Gazer Lately, I agree. But there was a time.
well, yes.... it was ;)
+Shoe Gazer i do!
+NorrinRadd22, Compared to Krzysztof Penderecki, the death metal music is just music to children's party.
When I saw Penderecki's name stapled to an opera about Paradise Lost, I knew it was going to be intense.
Wow that’s amazing thank you for sharing this wonderful composition

It was a coproduction with La Scala, and was performed there also.
Thank you so much for making this recording available! I have long wanted to hear "Paradise Lost" -- it is even better than I imagined
It's beautifully tragic, I love it
Rest in Peace Krzysztof Penderecki
Holy Mother of God! Intensity at its finest.
A really masterpiece!
Penderecki treats this religious themes in a outstanding way.
If you like this, I recommend St Luke Passion.
Essa obra é drasticamente linda!
This is amazing. I read that he based the melodies on Samaritan biblical chant. It sounds like it, too.

Dangerous music, but essential ... ...

He was already showing an alternative avantgard concept.
Alguém do Brasil já traduziu essa obra prima?

Rapidshare if i remember correctly (I probably do). Takes a bit of a search but it's there.
The music isn't as scary as the religious dogma that inspires Penderecki.
You mean reality? Yeah
me too
Even though *none* of them are him the God's voice reallly sounds like Charleton Heston in the beginning portion.
Magistral, d'une noirceur infinie ! Victor Hugo aurait aimé cet opéra qui rampe dans les tréfonds de son oeuvre!!!
where can i obtain this music?? if someone knows where i can buy a cd of this or a websight where i can download this that would be greatly appreciated. Id just rather not download it from youtube.. also dont want FLAC
