This concerto marks a shift in Penderecki's style to one that is more traditional and Wagnerian, in fact he makes use of one of the central themes of the concerto in some of the pieces that he wrote afterwards notably his Christmas symphony. I saw a live performance of it in the early 80s at the Royal Albert Hall with the same soloist who gave a masterly performance of it with maestro Penderecki himself as the conductor.

That crescendo in the beginning around 1:48 really resembles that of Bartok's Music for strings, percussions and celesta.

This is one of the most difficult compositions I've ever tackled; But I don't hear any audio :[ Thus it still remains that there are no performances of this piece up on youtube! Would love to see it re-uploaded

The Italian Youth Orchestra, conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki, with Salvatore Accardo at the violin.

Contra some other people I like both the earlier and later Penderecki. And, hey, this is nothing compared to Stravinsky, who was a late romantic, then a "neoclassicist" though he hated that word, then more of a neo-baroque type, and finallly, a serialist.

Have you ever heard anything by Ernst Krenek? He had even more 'phases' than Stravinsky... and unfortunately rather less musical personality than either Stravinsky or Penderecki. Actually alongside composers like Schnittke, Part, Rautavaara and others, Penderecki's move back to tonality isn't all that odd. Just one of the more extreme examples of a fairly common trend.

Penderecki is for a long time unbearable. He can`t keep the level of his youth. Threnody for Hiroshima was for me a very original work, but I can`t support this neoromantism.
