Asad, what you guys saw was not lobola negotiations. What you witnessed was a celebration of their union - we would refer to it as a "traditional wedding". Later on the bride and the groom may also decide to have another wedding ceremony - which we refer to as the "white wedding" - taken from the bride wedding dress. Lobola would have occurred long before the traditional wedding celebration. Lobola negotiations are a private matter - between the groom and bride's family. It is not open to the public. You would not have been invited to that occasion. When the groom signifies his intention to marry the bride - he would ask his uncle and other person (s) they may choose - to go the the bride's home and let them know of his intentions. The groom and the bride are also not involved in lobola negotiations. The bride is from the Swazi nation (amaSwati) - and the groom from the Vatsonga (Tsonga) nation. Not tribe.
