Those L&R guards are CRUCIAL for beginner cuts and/or for quick maintenance cuts. If you have the time, try to incorporate separate low number guards for best results. Once you master those techniques, you'll notice a HUGE difference in the "professional" look of your coiffe - no lie. If you like to go super low and tight for the summer, those low guards are almost mandatory! See my "articles" above for some tips, bro! Good Luck!
Been trying to find a video that shows an easy way to give yourself a taper cut and your video explains everything nicely. Haircut came out really great. I will grow my hair out and try this!
As a local teen barber I have been trying to learn how to taper fade because all I've done in the past is lineups and trims but this video is gonna have me doing sm more thanks so much!
You did an awesome job and better than a lot of barbers these days. Your video was simple and straight to the point! You just earned your self s subscriber brother !
This is a great tutorial right to the point, I looks easy because you have experience cutting your own hair and also have a great hair too, I'm going to try it on myself Thanks for sharing!
I'm 44, Stopped going barbers getting a short back n sides in 2002 Used to just shave it off, 2010 I started doing it marine cut high up, Now I learned to fade and I do a Mid fade, So much better than my old barbers. I use the Cordless Wahl senior's
Almost the first usefull video i have seen. I was looking for a video with this machine. The extra for me was that you show details what is important for my choice. I hope with an order i will be glad for the next haircuts. Thanks for this video. 👍🙂
I tried this and it’s probably one of the best simple haircuts I have done all the fading I used to do I just got tired of taking 1 or 2 hours to cut it and now it just takes 30 minutes thank you 🙏🏼
I did step by step and cut my 4 year old son's hair i was so happy with the results and so was he ❤ i didnt know what the L and R clips were until i saw your video.. thank you!
Good job! With a cheap pair of clippers, looks as good as a professional barber. When I was in my early 20s I got tired of high prices and never cutting it the same each time,so I started cutting my own,now 67 still doing it,but I use a vacuum hair cutter similar to Robo cut
Me too, I use a Flobee. I have kids now, one likes not to get a haircut so, the hair is too long for the Bee. I too bought the Color Pro, good luck to me this gent made it easy. I'm only 61. 😊
After 7 years of using my Philips clippers I've been searching for new ones to buy since a month. I think this video sold me on these wahl color pro. The only confusion i still got is to get cord or cordless.
I've been cutting my hair for OVER 10 years! Saved a TON of money, and except for a $125 stylist I had when I turned 21, it looks BETTER than any barber or stylist has ever cut it, w FEW exceptions. Today, I found an 8-pk set of blue "Andi" guide combs at Petsmart, for $20-sum'n. It contains their #10 on down to the no. 1/2 (I believe). It's for use with their Andi clippers - the brand they use for pet grooming. I've found them to be almost a direct fit for the full-size Wahl electric and/or rechargeable clippers. They're blue and have a spring-loaded clip for a tighter fit on the clippers, which I like. Also, they have SEVEN blades as opposed to the Wahls 4-5 so there's a LOT less chance of getting those short "mistake-buzz" area the video maker was talking about. I'd like to've seen the Wahl set to include the #10 AND #12 comb guides as most guys like to keep the tops of their hair longer. I know in the military (and in jail) the barber I used went with a #10 on top, and either a #6 on the sides and back, down to a #4 in the summer. Actually, in the military we're allowed to have up to 2" MAX. up top so a #12 would suffice for a bi-weekly DIY maintenance, maybe longer if you're under-way as I was w the Navy. Nowadays, (I'm 59) I've been going with an #8 up to the middle of the top, then guess cutting the front, using my fingers for guides (like a real barber), then #7 or #6 for the back of the top, down to a #5 blended into a #4 on the back right under the rear cow-lick, or straight into the #3, then #2 horizontally even with my temples, and finally #1 for over the ears - although I've been doing #2 for a LOT of the back and sides down to #1, then even lower for a real "tight and neat" look around the ears, "side-burn" areas and nape of the neck. Easy, peasy, and I've been getting a LOT more looks from a LOT more and LOT younger gals. Also, I didn't dye it, and went with a slightly lighter shade with my last dye job in early spring, which I outgrew. The gray and white nubs look tight especially with tightly groomed facial hair - sort of a 5-o'clock shadow look which I achieve w either a #1 or 1/2 or just the clippers in the UP position. I have thin very "silky", brown/gray, straight to slightly wavy hair which takes forever to grow and I have weird balding and whiter/grayer areas around both sides of my head. I use Nioxin shampoo which actually works to keep it full of body, and keeps the hair I have, maybe even grow a little more. Also, I go w natural nitrate-free, phosphate-free products which contain as much Biotin and Panthenol, as well as any other natural seed oils, green tea tree, or aloe, etc as possible. No conditioner since my hair is too thin and kinda oily already. I used to go a few days between full shampoo washes, but found out that I was actually doing MY type of hair more damage than good, so now I don't go any longer than two days between shampooing. I rinse it fully, daily, in-between washes, too. I've found every other day to be best for me, although I used to do daily a lot in past summers, because I would do a LOT of work during the day, and I'd sweat a lot, then go to the beach, daily, as well as be outside in the sun, all day. I had to incorporate a decent (expensive was best - I like Nioxin best) of conditioner with my shampoo. No gel or mouse, or anything heavy or too sticky (except for bed-head) Currently I'm using Bed-Head's "Salty Not Sorry" pre blow-dry spray which works great w a 30sec. med.heat blow-by-dry. This technique is a MUST for volume or a "thicker" or "fuller" look and it also slightly color-lightens my hair (even added some light-red and blonde high-lights, here and there) for that summery surfer or outdoorsman look, and/or beach-texture. I discovered this during our recent vacation and loved it, and so did my gal! We were fighting over my hair products - LOL! Recently, I tried monoxidil and didn't really notice anything different, probably 'cause I wasn't using the Nioxin w it. I've used Nioxing, faithfully in the past, and with a good diet, and healthy life-style I noticed a BIG difference, and actually saw new hair grow over my baseball-cap bald-spot in the back of my head. My sister who used to cut my hair noticed it, too, and asked me what I was doing so she could tell her clients! Now, YOU KNOW!
You get such good results. I always watch this one your shorter video where use the taper guards. I never can get the good taper that you get though. Any advise to get a smoother taper? Thank you for your videos.
I got into hair cutting after going to different barbers and how in the end they end up messing ur hair. I struggled from a wavy hair and no barber ever understood how to style my hair apart from myself. Thus it forced me to learn to cut hair myself
No, the taper attachments really aren’t good, they’re like training wheels. Look up “Andrew cuts” here on RUclips, he gives good tutorials on how to fade.
Nice came out nice . ima get em for $30 i've been using my beard trimmer with no lever just the guards. its time for something more appropriate to get the fade & get the blend in good now.
So for the ear guards you’re able to use these for the back of your head too? Just bought the same kit and watching that part confused me. GREAT video though!!
Flowbee and clippers are the best combination but only clippers are good, too.I love the ear taper guards. They had this clipper for 20€ with that trimmer here in Germany last week.
Hey! Question, when you first did the number 8 all around, did you have lever all the way up or down? And was the lever all the way up or down with the fade taper attachments?
Thanks this video is exactly what I needed to see, everyone had tutorials on how to fade and use scissors on top but this is the first video I found where the clippers are used on top as well (which I want to do, I dont feel comfortable messing with scissors for my first time). Just wondering do you know where I could get a number 12 (1.5 inch) guard? I would like to leave a bit more hair on top if possible and online I saw that number 12s exist but I couldnt find where to buy them exactly. Im in the US.
This doesn't look too hard. I'm trying to figure out how to give my son a fade. I usually just use a 3 all over his head but he wants something different
John - Thanks for the helpful video. Question if you will - your hair is standing up which probably makes for a better cut because it holds your hair where the clippers can reach it with the 1" guard. Did you do that intentionally do that for the hair cut and did you use a product to hold it up?
It’s a terrible practice to go around telling people they look sad. If they’re legitimately sad, maybe they will consider what you said? But I doubt it. But If they’re not sad at all, you just implied upon a persons emotions, that you have no understanding of, nor an understanding of their mental stability. Choose your words. To the man that created this video, I have to let you know. I’ve been cutting my own hair for over 15 years, and you taught me a couple things in this video. Thank you so much! Your hair looks great. My hair cuts will definitely get better because of this video. 🎉❤

Looks better than a lot of barber haircuts
Short video, to the point, and an easy & effective method. Thank you for this!
many thanks for your video and i just saved 25 CAD by using my 30 dollars Wahl to get a haircut. It's a life saving video cheers!
Wahl should give you money. I had no idea how the taper attachment worked. Your damn luck to have such thick hair.
Absolutely. RUclipsrs make brand deals with videos containing way less value than this one. Great job.
Been trying to find a video that shows an easy way to give yourself a taper cut and your video explains everything nicely. Haircut came out really great. I will grow my hair out and try this!

Was doubtful about using these ear taper guards, but your video really helped me, it looks great
I still have this trimmer. Its been 3 years now,. Best trimmer so far. Saved lots of money cutting own hair😊
Thats not a trimmer, it's a clipper
I tried this and it’s probably one of the best simple haircuts I have done all the fading I used to do I just got tired of taking 1 or 2 hours to cut it and now it just takes 30 minutes thank you 🙏🏼
I was going to give up on my self-cut but found your video, and for the first time I like my result, thanks John!
Glad I could help!
Thank you, brother! Excellent tutorial and I will start cutting my own hair with all these rising prices!! Great job 👏🏼

I did step by step and cut my 4 year old son's hair i was so happy with the results and so was he ❤ i didnt know what the L and R clips were until i saw your video.. thank you!

thank you so much for this video! i was cutting my hair for awhile now and today i learned how to use the right and left taper attachment! 😂
nice cut bro, it looks elegant.
and you save a lot of money!
I wouldn't tell that its a self made haircut if I didnt see the video.
This is very helpful for giving my buddy a basic taper. I never used those L/R guards but I will use them today! Thanks John!
Well done looks super good and great explanation as you are cutting.

BEST TUTORIAL I REALLY ENJOYED IT ❤ THANKS MR JOHN
That's a good, simple haircut. Thanks for the vid. Haven't used my left and right taper guards yet but will try on my next cut.
It's pretty easy, the trickier part is then blending the line above the taper but you should figure it out after a couple of tries.
Thanks bro! I just did this and it's great! Only used the #8! 💇♂️
Great haircut I must say… and you did it yourself. Awesome
Look snazzy as heck !! Good use of the L and R guards for the back 🤔 gotta try that
You made that look easy. Nice

Very informative video!! 👏 My very first and last time I did this I went front to back 😂😂😤 and never again. Will try this again 😅
You are using the tapers not only on the side,. but also at the full back of the neck, horizontally,... thats interesting

Great stuff , I have had those clippers for like 7 years 0:02 and they are work nicely . I still get a home made fade with a zero !!
Just tried my 1st, went well & fast thanks to your video!! Others I watched said set aside up to 2 hours for your first time. Heck no!
Excellent haircut.
The hairdresser can't do better, it was perfect👍
Wow I was use the side clip all roung good idea starting from the bac
Looks good. I’m going to have to try this!
Struggling to remove the guards. What Is the easy technique?
Could you take one of these taper attachments to go straight across the back of the head..like a line..to give a nice start to a fade
No, the taper attachments really aren’t good, they’re like training wheels. Look up “Andrew cuts” here on RUclips, he gives good tutorials on how to fade.
Thanks Gill

So did you just use the L and R taper on the back too, just starting in the middle and going left or right with each attachment?
I have that same question
He's keeping the shorter fins on the edge of the hairline and going across the neck line like that
I do the same haircut with those same guards lol good stuff saves a lot of money
Wow! I can't believe you can do that if I didn't see this video. Thanks
I used a number 8 and it looks way shorter on top than yours
Tapered attachment 👌👍
Nice job man. Just started cutting my own hair too.
Dharr Mann?
Thanks for Uploading.
This is great video! Thank you for sharing!
great job
What number is 3 quarter ?? 😊
Well done brother
This bro is a Pro version 😂 im inspired 😊

GREAT JOB I HAVE THE SAME WAHL CLIPPER I LOVE IT ‼️
I bought the color pro plus, I hear a luod click when it is switched on exactly like in this video clip, is that normal?
loud
YES I HEAR A LOUD 🔊 CLICK TOO IT'S NORMAL,
Good video and good haircut.
Greetings.
Hey! Question, when you first did the number 8 all around, did you have lever all the way up or down? And was the lever all the way up or down with the fade taper attachments?
I don't remember exactly but I probably left the lever longer on the top and shorter on the sides.

The same for me, tried scissors, but didn't like result, this is the best and easiest method I found
Great video thanks.
Nice Music , im gonna try that hair cut style
Great job, looks good!
This doesn't look too hard. I'm trying to figure out how to give my son a fade. I usually just use a 3 all over his head but he wants something different
OK I just got done cutting his hair and it looks amazing! Thanks so much for the instructions ❤️
that's so cool!
Looking good 😍
Howed you get the back the way you did?
Thanks man!
Good and simply!
Man just saved my life 😂
thanks!
Came across your video a day late, RIP my hair
you used the taper left and right… did you use the taper for the neck line??
Yes.

What about your neck from the back, it looks very clean, how did you manage to do that? Razor or clippers and if so what number?
