I just want to say first that I found this tutorial to be absolutely fantastic. It really got me excited and reignited my interest in retrogaming. It gave me the confidence to put down some money and spend a week tinkering getting my own machine to work and I would never have had the confidence without this video. You're doing great work for the retro community man.
That said, my own experience with building a retro machine on a budget left me a little bit out in the cold. Entirely my fault. I tend to get excited and leap before I look. And that definitely happened here.
Again, not knocking ETA Prime, the dudes only one man and only has so much time to discuss all the possible hardware permutations that can come up when building a rig out of old parts. On top of that, emulation is a not fixed quantity like playing the games on old consoles would. So there's two sets of variables at play.
Personally, I can attest that machines like this will do a great job emulating plenty of fantastic Gamecube and Dreamcast titles. Probably around 90% will run perfectly fine, as well as almost anything from previous generations. And for most people that will be more than good enough.
For instance. For me, a similar setup ran Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, Beyond Good and Evil, Chibi Robo, and Prince of Persia almost perfectly. Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast was also fully playable.
Unfortunately, I had my heart really set on a few titles that dolphin still needs a lot of processing power to render playable. In particular Rogue Squadron II and MGS Twin Snakes. Virtually unplayable even at standard definition on the GT 1030. I'm sure there are other games as well that fit on that list. You might have your heart set on some of these tougher titles. So plan accordingly. A machine that can handle those games might not be quite as cheap but it will save you grief in the long run to invest wisely.

Thanks for taking the time out to write this piece. Gutted for Rogue Squadron 2 and MGS, have you managed to get it running yet? I'm going to start building my machine up hopefully this weekend.

@@HerecomestheCalavera Well, after you get rid of all the bloat absolutely nothing. However, when I used it about half the packages I wanted to install required adding ppa's. I got tired of adding those and deleting them when I got rid of those packages. It's the same reason I rarely use Ubuntu based distros now. While it has definitely gotten better since I used it last, on my 1 Ubuntu box I haven't had to add a single ppa, there's still a bad taste in my mouth from it. With arch based distros you never have to add repositories since you have access to the Arch User Repository (AUR) which has pretty much all of the software that isn't in the main repositories. Just like ppa's you have to watch out for malware. Also there have been a couple of privacy concerns with Ubuntu over the years. That and it just didn't feel like it fit me. In the end whether or not it is a good or bad distribution is up to the individual user.

Really ought to set up the OS, so this is just the video I need!
I have brought SATA cables to the outside. It gets hot inside. I can plug on 2.5” drives or use USB...
Modded power to bring power out the back. But USB nicely powers 2.5” off the 5v.

Due to the likes but no answer, I give guys a little status update.
My small form factor pc works with 64bit which all together just works better. The other stuff is instead of Batocera I used another one called Recalbox, which is a works like a charm.
I bet Xorhub website is down because of a trademark infringement or such. All other forums they recommend to use Recalbox, because it has low requirements and do everything which says on the tin.

Thanks. 2nd time I watched this, getting ready to do one of these. It's funny, as you were naming off everything needed to do the build, I'm going "sweet" inside my head, I have every single item, except my biggest thumb drive is only 16 gig. Every singel item. I'll probably watch the video a couple more times before I do the build. After I have everything set up, I'll have it memorized and blast through it.
I'll be doing all the downloads, networking, and file transfers on android, Samsung A 50. I'm right now building a linux machine, my first. I need to join this party. I have 3 fresh win 10 builds right in front of me running. The last one I built I was thinking of using as you have done here. I have a couple of other choices out in the shop, I will rebuild more suited to fit this profile, so. ... I'll be back. Thanks,
There better be a good selection of games
    just kidding.

There is one of these for £40 delivered or £20 collected 55 miles from me. Its very tempting. I have 8gb of ddr3, a gtx 460 and and an r9 270x gathering dust at the mo which would give this a boost if the gpu fits inside the machine but looks great as it is for about the same price as a pi and capable of some light pc gaming. A great starter pc for my little boy once he is old enough and a cheap and convenient way to show him the evolution of video games. The one I am considering has an e7400 cpu.

Cool. Batocera is way better than Recalbox and Retropie. The only point where Retropie is better than Batocera and Recalbox as well, it is on the ES interface which is largely more advanced. But Batocera it's working hard right now to catch up and reach the Retropie interface level with all the advantages and options already offered by Batocera. Batocera has bezels that you can enable and disable from ES interface which Recalbox and Retropie do not have. You can choose your video mode which is also a good feature. For version 5.21, which should come out and be released by late of March, there will also be surprises. Concerning themes and customizable themes, I think it will be present probably for the 5.23 Batocera version (maybe in 4 months) when they will have finished reviewing the interface improvement. Thank you for your video anyway.

Just a tip. When you flash image using Etcher you don't have to extract it, Etcher will still work. Also i don't know why but i think some PC's Batocera will just freeze on black screen when first booting up, if it doesn't work i turn it off and boot up again and it works second time.

    • @thepenultimateninja5797
      @thepenultimateninja5797 5 лет назад +1

The 'freezing' might be due to the fact that Batocera expands the filesystem to fill the drive the first time you boot it. This can take a while with larger drives.
