THANK YOU. This totally smashed it. I followed the video virtually to the letter. I installed Linux Mint on a little laptop (1.2Ghz, 4GB ram, no GPU ram, 32GB SSD), and then followed the guide to install retro pie. I had an old USB gamepad knocking about, plugged it in and it all worked! It has six buttons and two triggers so was ideal for NES, and Megadrive.

This is really cool. I was looking for how to install retropie on pc long time ago but i don't need it anymore because I bought premium Launchbox. This is still good stuff though if you don't have bigbox.
tip: if you have a really old PC that can't boot from a USB, get a CD (or a floppy if you still have one) and then burn plop boot manager to it, if that still doesn't work, go into setup>boot manager>toggle force usb 1.1 to mode 1.
As always thanks! Could you do a "How to" for loading the directories from another drive? I'm using an SSD that doesn't have enough space but don't want to install use my HDD as the boot drive.
Quick question after seeing two of you setups. What would you recomend to install. Botosera or retropie for pc? Ive created a pc+screen into a hardcase that ive bought and wanted to transfor this into a game station but also be able to use kodi whenever I'm outdoor.
Thanks for this video, I got this running on an old laptop Intel Core 2 Duo 4gb memory with a 350gb, and it is working good, I needed this so when I go out I can take my games with me..
Wow every time I see one of your videos I've got a new project keep up the good work I love how informative you are. One question: can you run your ROMs from USB like on the Raspberry Pi???
I really can't thank you enough for this video. I have done this on 4 desktops (Dell OptiPlex 790's and 990's) I got cheap, and 2 Dell Latitude laptops. I have also done this for several friends (at no charge) since I'm having a blast doing it. Now we are all trying to set up the only multiplayer in retroarch!

Eta Prime you have full power, what about graphic card drivers? can bas also be done with win 10 for better performance, direct start in emulation station. can you make video?
How does this compair with Recallbox/ batocera? Isnt this a way better option if you have a discrete GPU? From what I can tell, batocera flat out does not support gtx 10 series GPUs and has limited GPU support on general.
Is there a way to run an image from arcadepunks? I know u need emulation station but was wanting to basically turn my old pc into a raspberry pi to play arcade games on my arcade1up. No sense in buying a pi when i have spare pcs laying around. Some info from someone would be greatly appreciated.

Should I install batocera on a USB boot up? Or retropi the way this video shows, or......? Thanks for the help. I'm trying to learn all of this. Your videos have been amazing
Emulationstation is not launching after doing everything 😞 It blinks a black screen or the screen just goes black and then goes back to the Ubuntu GUI after a few seconds... I know this is an old video but I was hopping to get some luck with this little project I'm trying to do... I tried to do this with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS... I don't know if the 64bit version got installed and that's why it is doing this to me... But it should just launch no matter if my system is 64bit or not... Right? 😅 I'm so clumsy with this 😅😅😅
What if when you search for the Rpie shortcut it doesn't find anything. I can run retropie if I go to the terminal and enter emulationstation but it doesn't seem to find any retropie shortcut to add the the favorites. You are doing this at approximately 13:46 in your video
So from what I recall whenever I ran custom apps and also retro pie you need to move the app image and or script to desktop just create shortcut for command, but if it's app image then set the location to the /opt folder in linux
Thanks for the video. I was kinda struggeling because I tried the retropie image for the hardware itself on a USB stick to install it on a stick until I realized that it is stupid.
In your opinion, is this the best way to turn an old PC into an emulation machine when Windows is not an option? I followed this on a few desktops and a couple laptops for my friends and myself. It works great, but I was just curious if there was something better I could try. I will be doing big box on my main windows PC next.
I've been trying to find this answer all day. I put retro pie on Ubuntu. Can it run a fully loaded retropie image from arcadepunks? Quarantine has me doing lots of projects.
If i can't boot Batocera then not much chance booting to Unbuntu from USB, I think you'll find you need to change in BIOS UEFI to Legacy or ACHI or Vise Versa to show the USB as Bootable, No reason a PC or Laptop not to Boot is set right
